Η γνωριμία μου με τους AMONG RUINSέγινε ανάποδα από ότι θα περίμενε κανείς. Πηγαίνοντας σε ένα liveστο MODUγια όποια και όποιον το θυμάται να δω τους DAYLIGHT MISERYείδα πρώτη φορά liveτο υλικό της μπάντας και ομολογώ η πρώτη μου σκέψη ήταν γιατί δεν τους είχα ακούσει μέχρι τότε. Πέρασαν χρόνια από τότε και μάλιστα αρκετά από αυτά ήταν ανενεργοί οι AMONG RUINS. Μέχρι φέτος, που επέστρεψαν με το τρίτο τους άλμπουμ Land Of The Black Sunπου κυκλοφορεί 14 Ιουλίου από την Theogonia Records.
Τι έχει αλλάξει από τα δύο προηγούμενα άλμπουμ; Το line upτης μπάντας και αν με ρωτάς κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη η ευθύτητα των συνθέσεων. Κάθε τραγούδι έχει ξεκάθαρη δομή, στόχευση και μελωδία με εναλλαγές τοποθετημένες με τέτοιο τρόπο που καταφέρνει να σε συγκινεί. Η αντίθεση των μελωδιών με τα brutalφωνητικά δημιουργεί μια πολύ γοητευτική, οξύμωρη ατμόσφαιρα. Το πρώτο single/βίντεο του Wells Of Warπου σκηνοθέτησε ο Tuomas Saukkonenμε πλάνα από την κοινή εμφάνιση της μπάντας με τους Wolfheartείναι από τα πιο κολλητικά riffπου έχω ακούσει φέτος.
Σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία έχουμε δυο guestσυμμετοχές, μια του Tuomas Saukkonen(Wolfheart, Before The Dawn, Dawn Of Solace) που παίζει ακουστική κιθάρα στοEnd of My Fallκαι του Γιώργου Προκοπίου στα καθαρά φωνητικά τουLand of the Black Sun. Τη μίξη και το masteringέχει επιμεληθεί ο Saku Moilanenστα Deep Noise Studiosστη Φινλανδία.
Δεν θα ξεχωρίσω τραγούδια γιατί κάθε ένα έχει κάτι να σου δώσει που δεν το περιμένεις. Όπως όταν ακούς για πρώτη φορά το Our Destructive Tideπου η μελωδία μπαίνει με αναπάντεχο τρόπο και σε αιφνιδιάζει ευχάριστα.Οι AMONG RUINSέχουν στο DNAτους το μελωδικό death metalπου σε κερδίζει από το πρώτο άκουσμα ακριβώς γιατί έχει αυτό που ανέφερα και πιο πάνω. Είναι ευθύ και εύστοχο παρόλο που είναι βαθιά συναισθηματικό και μελωδικό και αυτό του εξασφαλίζει μια πολύ γοητευτική μοναδικότητα. Μην προσπεράσετε το Land Of The Black Sunχωρίς ακρόαση. Θα σας κερδίσει από το πρώτο άκουσμα.

My introduction to AMONG RUINS was the opposite of what you would expect. Going to a live show at MODU for anyone who remembers it to watch DAYLIGHT MISERY I saw the band’s material live for the first time and I have to admit my first thought was why I hadn’t listened to their music until then. It’s been years since then and in fact several of those years AMONG RUINS were quite inactive. Until 2023, when they returned with their third album Land Of The Black Sun which is out July 14th on Theogonia Records.
You might ask what has changed from the previous two albums? The line up of the band and if you ask me, in my personal opinion, the straightforwardness of the compositions. Each song has a clear structure, focus and melody with variations placed in such a way that it manages to move you. The contrast of the melodies with the brutal vocals creates a very charming, edgy atmosphere. The first single/video of Wells Of War directed by Tuomas Saukkonen with footage from the band’s joint performance with WOLFHEART is one of the catchiest riffs I’ve heard this year.
In this release we have two guest appearances, one by Tuomas Saukkonen (Wolfheart, Before The Dawn, Dawn Of Solace) who plays acoustic guitar in End of My Fall and by Giorgos Prokopiou on the clean vocals of Land of the Black Sun. The mixing and mastering was done by Saku Moilanen at Deep Noise Studios in Finland.
I won’t single out songs because each one has something to give you that you don’t expect. Like when you listen to Our Destructive Tide for the first time and the melody builds up in an unexpected way and pleasantly surprises you. AMONG RUINS have in their DNA melodic death metal that captures you from the first listen exactly because it has what I mentioned above. It’s straightforward and apt even though it’s deeply emotional and melodic and this gives it a very charming uniqueness. Don’t pass Land Of The Black Sun by without a listen. It will win you over from the first listen.
