Εννέα ολόκληρα χρόνια απουσίας από την δισκογραφία είναι αναμφίβολα ένα αρκετά μεγάλο κενό. Δημιουργεί μεγάλες προσδοκίες, ειδικά όταν το εκάστοτε συγκρότημα δηλώνει ενεργό. Προσδοκίες που σε πολλές περιπτώσεις, περισσότερες από ότι θα θέλαμε, δεν καλύπτουν ούτε πληρούν τα απαιτούμενα. Η τρίτη δουλειά όμως των ELYSION δεν αποτελεί μια τέτοια περίπτωση.
Το Bring Out Your Dead συνεχίζει ακριβώς από εκεί που το συγκρότημα σταμάτησε με το Someplace Better και πάει και μερικά βήματα παρακάτω. Δύο βασικά συστατικά ξεχωρίζουν και στα 10 κομμάτια που περιέχει το album με κοινό παράγοντα μεταξύ τους την μελωδία. Το Bring Out Your Dead βρίθει μελωδίας τόσο κιθαριστικά όσο και στο κομμάτι των φωνητικών γραμμών. Κάθε refrain κουβαλάει κάτι από την ταυτότητα της μπάντας ως προς το θέμα των φωνητικών, κοινώς μοιράζεται παρόμοια και γνώριμα χαρακτηριστικά από παλαιότερες δουλειές, αλλά δημιουργεί και μια αρκετά όμορφη συνοχή ανάμεσα στις συνθέσεις του δίσκου. Δεν θα συναντήσεις καμία πολυπλοκότητα στις μελωδικές γραμμές της φωνής, τίποτα έξω από τα συνηθισμένα και εκεί ακριβώς κερδίζει η Χριστιάνα το ζήτημα. Είναι απλές, λιτές, ευκολομνημόνευτες, με ροή, έξυπνα δομημένες ως προς το που επενδύει τα δυνατά της στοιχεία και επιτρέπουν στα κομμάτια να αναπνέουν σαν σύνολο, με το κάθε τι να έχει τον σωστό του χώρο στην ηχητική εικόνα.
Κάτι ακόμα που με κέρδισε είναι το ότι ο τρόπος που επιλέγει να διαχειριστεί η Χριστιάνα διαφορετικά χρώματα ως προς το τεχνικό κομμάτι γίνεται με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε να εξυπηρετεί το ζητούμενο χωρίς να εκθέτει πιθανές αδυναμίες. Δηλαδή, παρ ότι ίσως να μην έχει κλασική εκπαίδευση, ο τρόπος που επιλέγει να χρησιμοποιήσει αυτόν τον χώρο τεχνικά είναι τόσο όσο, προσθέτοντας στο εκάστοτε σημείο χωρίς να εκθέτει πιθανές τεχνικές ελλείψεις. Κάτι που δυστυχώς συναντάμε σε αντίθετες περιπτώσεις, που ενώ υποτίθεται πως υπάρχει το υπόβαθρο της λυρικής και κλασικής εκπαίδευσης, το αποτέλεσμα, ας πούμε πως μένει στο ναι μεν αλλά…
Το δεύτερο δυνατό σημείο του Bring Out Your Dead είναι οι συνθέσεις εν γένη και πιο στοχευμένα οι κιθαριστικές μελωδίες και τα riff. Το εναρκτήριο κομμάτι του album Blink Of An Eye παρουσιάζει μια πιο επιθετική τάση αυτή την φορά ως προς το θέμα των riff, κάτι που ακολουθεί και στο Crossing Over. Πάρα πολύ ωραίες ιδέες, πάρα πολύ ωραίο groove στα As The Flowers Withers και Raid The Universe με το δεύτερο να κερδίζει στα σημεία για εμένα. Το Eternity που ολοκληρώνει τον δίσκο, κατ εμε είναι από τις πιο δυνατές και όμορφες στιγμές του Bring Out Your Dead και πολύ σωστή η επιλογή του να κλείσει την τρίτη τους δουλειά.
Πλούσιο γενικά, μελωδικά, ατμοσφαιρικά, θα το χαρακτήριζα και επί του σημείου ταυτόχρονα το τρίτο δισκογραφικό βήμα των ELYSION. Δεν χρειάζεται να εφεύρεις τον τροχό κάποιες φορές, ούτε και να κάνεις κάτι καινούργιο. Το να κάνεις άψογα ότι ακριβώς απαιτεί, ζητάει και “χαρακτηρίζει” τον ήχο που εκπροσωπείς είναι πιο δύσκολο κάποιες φορές και κάνει όλη την ουσιαστική διαφορά. Πάρε για παράδειγμα το Buried Alive, το refren του οποίου σφυρίζεις από την πρώτη ακρόαση και για κάνα 2 μέρες μετά σερί. Θες να το πεις εμπορικό, θες να το πεις πιασάρικο, θες pop, στο τέλος της μέρας το ότι το χέρι πηγαίνει αυθόρμητα στο repeat είναι ξεκάθαρα νίκη. Σε όλα τα παραπάνω αν προσθέσεις και μία καλή παραγωγή, όπως έχουμε εδώ, είναι εγγυημένη επιτυχία.

Nine whole years of absence from the discography is undoubtedly quite a big gap. It creates great expectations, especially when the band in question declares itself active, expectations that in many cases, more than we would like, do not meet or fulfill them. But ELYSION‘s third work is not such a case.
Bring Out Your Dead picks up right where the band left off with Someplace Better and takes it a few steps further. Two key ingredients stand out in all 10 tracks on the album with melody being the common factor between them. Bring Out Your Dead is rife with melody both guitar-wise and in the vocal lines section. Each refrain carries something of the band’s identity in terms of vocal theme, commonly sharing similar and familiar characteristics from past works, but also creating a pretty nice cohesion between the album’s compositions. You won’t encounter any complexity in the melodic vocal lines, nothing out of the ordinary and that’s exactly where Christiana wins the bet. They’re simple, easy to remember, with flow, cleverly structured in terms of where she invests her strengths and allow the tracks to breathe as a whole, with each thing having its proper space in the sonic picture.
Something else that won me over is that the way Christiana chooses to manage different colors in terms of the technical part is in such a way that it serves the purpose without exposing possible weaknesses. That is, although she may not have classical training, the way she chooses to use this space technically is as much so, adding to the point at hand without exposing possible technical ellipses. Something that we unfortunately encounter in opposite cases, where while there is supposedly a background of lyrical and classical training, the result, let’s say, stays at yes but…
The second strong element of Bring Out Your Dead is the compositions in general and more specifically the guitar melodies and riffs. The album opener Blink Of An Eye shows a more aggressive trend this time in terms of the riff theme, something that follows on Crossing Over. Very nice ideas, very nice groove on As The Flowers Withers and Raid The Universe with the latter winning in spots for me. Eternity, which closes the album, according to me is one of the strongest and most beautiful moments of Bring Out Your Dead and very right choice to close their third work.
Rich in general, melodically, atmospherically, I would describe ELYSION‘s third album and on the point at the same time. You don’t have to invent the wheel sometimes, nor do you have to do something new. To do flawlessly exactly what the sound you represent demands, asks for and “characterizes” it is more difficult sometimes and makes all the essential difference. Take for example Buried Alive, whose chorus line you can whistle from the first listen and for a couple of days after. You want to call it easy listening, you want to call it catchy, you want to call it pop, at the end of the day the hand that spontaneously goes to the repeat button is clearly a win. Add to all of the above a good production, as we have here, and it’s a guaranteed success.
