Αναμφισβήτητα ένα από τα πιο αναμενόμενα άλμπουμ της χρονιάς. Σίγουρα μια μπάντα που αυτή τη στιγμή δονεί όλο το μεταλικό στερέωμα και με το 7ο άλμπουμ της ετοιμάζεται να κάνει και τον τελευταίο «άπιστο Θωμά» να του παραδεχτεί (είδες πως το έδεσα με την Μεγάλη Παρασκευή έτσι;).
Ναι, Μεγάλη Παρασκευή 2021 και κυκλοφορεί το Fortitude των Gojira από τη Roadrunner. Μετά το θλιμμένο και βαθιά συναισθηματικό Magma που σάρωσε τα charts η τετράδα από τη Γαλλία έρχεται να δώσει μια αισιοδοξία όπως λέει και στις συνεντεύξεις της με τραγούδια που έχουν έντονο τον χαρακτηριστικό ήχο τους όπως το Another World, τραγούδια που αφυπνίζουν κοινωνικά και αποτελούν φόρο τιμής στους Sepultura όπως το Amazonia αλλά και μουσικά «ανοίγματα» που δεν είχαν κάνει ποτέ πριν όπως στο The Chant. Ένας ήχος σχεδόν blues που σπρώχνει τα όρια της μουσικής δημιουργίας ακόμη πιο μακριά.
Οι Gojira βέβαια δεν έφτιαξαν ποτέ μουσική για να είναι εμπορικοί, μόνο που μέσα στην μουσική τους ιδιοφυία είναι αυτό που λέμε και στο χωριό the next big thing! Ναι αγνέ μου “βαρυμέταλε”, η μουσική δεν έχει όρια και αν τα έχει είναι για να ξεπερνιούνται και να σπάνε. Πριν λίγες μέρες ο Metal God (Rob Halford) φωτογραφήθηκε με μπλουζάκι Gojira… Ο μουσικός που έχει τη ματιά να συνδυάσει τσαμπούνες και ηπειρώτικα μοιρολόγια με το death metal, ο μουσικός που παίρνει blues στοιχεία και τα «επιμεταλλώνει», ο μουσικός που πήρε μια συμφωνική ορχήστρα και την έβαλε μέσα σε μια metal σύνθεση, o μουσικός που χαλάρωσε τις χορδές δημιουργώντας το distortion είναι ο μουσικός που προχωράει τη μουσική και κάνει ακόμη πιο πλατύ το μουσικό ορίζοντα.
Τα θέματα τους είναι και πάλι ταγμένα στην πλειονότητά τους στην διαφύλαξη των φυσικών πόρων και του πλανήτη και μάλιστα με τρόπο απτό και ρεαλιστικό. Η εκστρατεία που έκαναν με την κυκλοφορία του βίντεο του Amazonia ενίσχυσε το The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, που είναι μια ομάδα δικηγόρων που υπερασπίζεται περιβαλλοντικά και πολιτιστικά δικαιώματα για φυλές του Αμαζονίου. Από τον πλειστηριασμό διάφορων memorabilia συγκέντρωσαν περισσότερα από $250,000.
Μουσικά το Fortitude ακούγεται δυνατά από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Τόσο οι εναλλαγές όσο και το φάσμα των συνθέσεων το κάνουν απλό και σύνθετο ταυτόχρονα με ένα τρόπο απόλυτα σαγηνευτικό. Με τραγούδια όπως το Sphinx να σε ταξιδεύουν, Into The Storm να ξυπνάνε αυχενικά σύνδρομα ή να τα δημιουργούν, The Trails να σε στοιχειώνουν και ένα Grind για κλείσιμο που σε αφήνει να αναρωτιέσαι «τι μόλις άκουσα;» και να μαζεύεις το σαγόνι σου απ’ το πάτωμα.
Δεν νιώθω ότι χρειάζεται να πω κάτι παραπάνω εκτός από το ότι αν σε ενδιαφέρει το παρόν της metal αυτός ο δίσκος είναι το απόλυτο must have στη δισκοθήκη σου.

This is without a single doubt one of the most anticipated albums of the year! Most definitely this is the one band that shakes the entire heavy metal universe and with it’s 7th album is about to prove even the “doubting Thomas” see the light (see what I did there, being Great Friday/Easter etc?).
Yeap, Great Friday for the orthodox Christians and Fortitude of Gojira is being released by Roadrunner. After the grieving and deeply sentimental Magma that took the charts by storm the quartet from France is back to set a more optimistic note as they state in their interviews. With songs that reek of Gojiraness such as Another World, songs which are meant to raise awareness on social/environmental issues while giving homage to the mighty Sepultura such as Amazonia but also musical leaps never taken before such as The Chant. An almost bluesy sound that breaks new ground for the metal genre pushing the boundaries even further.
Gojira have never aimed towards being easy to listen to, however they have managed with their musical brilliance to become what we call “the next big thing”! Yes my “true” metalhead, music has no boundaries and even if it does they are there to be broken. Only a couple of days ago the Metal God himself (Rob Halford) uploaded a picture in his social media account wearing a Gojira tshirt… A musician who has the inspiration to combine traditional instruments and ethnic music with death metal, a musician who takes a New Orleans kind of blues and makes it heavy metal, a musician who incorporates a symphonic orchestra in metal music, a musician who loosens the chords of his guitar and invents distortion is a musician who guides music further and widens the musical horizon.
Lyric wise they are once again fighting the good fight for environmental issues in a tangible realistic way. With the release of the video for the song Amazonia the band had a fundraising initiative to benefit the group The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil, who advocate for environmental and cultural rights of indigenous tribes in the Amazon. The memorabilia auction and raffle have raised over $250,000.
Musically Fortitude is made to be blasted at 11. Both the diversity and the spectrum of the melodies make it simple yet complex at the same time in a way that’s pure seduction. With transcending songs such as Sphinx, neck breaking anthems such as Into The Storm, haunting riffs such as The Trails and an epic ending with Grind, which leaves you speechless, jaw to the floor, wondering “What the F@#k did I just listen?”.
I feel I need to say no more other than, if you’re interested in the present of the metal genre, this is the absolute must have for your collection.
