Εσείς τι κάνατε του Αγίου Βαλεντίνου; Εγώ πήρα έναν Palentine μου και κατηφορίσαμε προς το κέντρο του Newcastle για να έρθουμε πιο κοντά με μερικές χιλιάδες άτομα και όλοι μαζί να δείξουμε την αγάπη μας σ’ ένα πολύ δυνατό παρεάκι: τους Άγγλους Employed to Serve, τους Νεοζηλανδούς Alien Weaponry και τους Γάλλους bien-aimés, Gojira με αφορμή την κυκλοφορία της πιο πρόσφατης δισκογραφικής τους δουλειάς Fortitude που κυκλοφόρησε ναι μεν το 2021, αλλά λόγω διαφόρων εμποδίων οι Gojira δεν κατάφεραν να το περιοδεύσουν νωρίτερα.
Το venue είναι ήδη γεμάτο και η πρώτη μπάντα βγαίνει στη σκήνη. Η αλήθεια είναι πως τους Employed to Serve τους ανακάλυψα σχετικά πρόσφατα και μου έκαναν πολλή καλή ακουστική εντύπωση, οπότε το να τους δω και live θα ήταν the deal breaker or maker, και οι Employed to Serve δεν απογοήτευσαν. Φοβερή ενέργεια επάνω στη σκηνή, έπαιξαν σαν μία ολοκληρωμένη τέλεια δεμένη μονάδα, χωρίς να τσιγκουνεύονται τα shredding και τα θανατηφόρα breakdowns και σίγουρα αξίζουν να βρίσκονται στο προσκήνιο της metal σκηνής μαζί με τους μεγάλους παίκτες εκεί έξω.
Κι αφού έχουμε ζεσταθεί και το mosh pit έχει πάρει κι αυτό φωτιά, σειρά έχουν οι απίστευτοι Alien Weaponry, που ξέρετε ότι τους έχω αδυναμία ε; Ηλικίας μεταξύ 20-25 ετών οι 3 Νεοζηλανδοί ανεβαίνουν στην σκηνή και πλημμυρίζουν το venue με την αστείρευτη ενέργεια τους. Γνωστοί για την κληρονομιά τους από τους Μαορί και το πως συνδυάζουν την μουσική τους γύρω απ΄αυτή, οι Alien Weaponry συνέχισαν να θέτουν τις βάσεις για μια εκπληκτική βραδιά metal με οld school thrash & groove metal και Gojira infused μουσικές και παραδοσιακούς Μαορί ήχους/στίχους. Ο μπασίστας των Alien Weaponry, Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds, ήταν ανεξάντλητη πηγή ενέργειας και απλά δεν μπορούσες να πάρεις τα μάτια σου από πάνω του.
Νομίζω πως δεν θα υπήρχε δυνατότερος συνδυασμός opening acts που να μας προετοιμάσει καλύτερα για τους Γάλλους της καρδιάς μας, Gojira, οι οποίοι μας είπαν καλησπέρα με το Born of One Thing. Το Fortitude φυσικά κυριάρχησε στο setlist, αλλά και με παλιότερα πολυαγαπημένα όπως, The Heaviest Matter of The Universe, Flying Whales, Silvera, Stranded, The Art of Dying, L’ Enfant sauvage, οι Gojira μας έστειλαν ταξιδάκι στο φοβερό memory lane της δισκογραφίας τους.
Πρώτη φορά για εμένα που έβλεπα τους Gojira live και αυτό που έχω να πω με σιγουριά είναι πως η ζωντανή τους εμφάνιση απέδειξε γιατί έχουν σκαρφαλώσει στην κορυφή και γιατί είναι μία από τις καλύτερες τεχνικές metal μπάντες αυτή τη στιγμή. Μία εμφάνιση βαριά και δυνατή, με εξαιρετικές μουσικές και ένα πολύ ευχαριστημένο κοινό. Το μόνο μικρό μου παράπονο είναι πως η μουσική τους ήταν πολλή δυνατή και ο Joe Duplantier ακουγόταν κάπως χαμηλά. Μεγαλύτερο highlight για εμένα, φυσικά ο mind blowing Mario Duplantier στα drums. What did you guys do for Valentine’s Day? I took one of my Palentine’s and we headed down to the centre of Newcastle to get closer to a few more thousand people and show our love to a very powerful bunch: England’s Employed to Serve, New Zealand’s Alien Weaponry and French bien-aimés, Gojira on the occasion of the release of their most recent album Fortitude which was released in 2021, but due to various obstacles Gojira were unable to tour it earlier.
The venue is already packed and the first band takes to the stage. Truth be told, I discovered Employed to Serve relatively recently and they made a great auditory impression, so seeing them live would be the deal breaker or the deal maker, but Employed to Serve did not disappoint. Great energy on stage, they played as a complete perfectly tight unit, with generous shredding and deadly breakdowns. They definitely deserve to be at the forefront of the metal scene alongside the big players out there.
And after we’ve warmed up and the mosh pit is on fire too, it’s the turn of the incredible Alien Weaponry, who you know I have a soft spot for, right? Aged between 20-25, the 3 New Zealanders take to the stage and flood the venue with their boundless energy. Known for their Māori heritage and how they blend their music around it, Alien Weaponry continued to set the stage for an amazing night of metal with old school thrash & groove metal Gojira infused melodies and traditional Māori sounds/lyrics. Alien Weaponry’s bassist, Tūranga Morgan-Edmonds, was an unstoppable source of energy as you simply couldn’t take your eyes off him.
I don’t think there could have been a stronger combination of opening acts to better prepare us for the Frenchmen of our hearts, Gojira, who said good evening to us with Born of One Thing. Fortitude of course dominated the setlist, but with old favourites such as, The Heaviest Matter of The Universe, Flying Whales, Silvera, Stranded, The Art of Dying, L’Enfant sauvage, Gojira sent us on a trip down the awesome memory lane of their discography.
First time for me to see Gojira live and what I can say for sure is that their live performance proved why they have climbed to the top and why they are one of the best technical metal bands right now. A heavy and powerful performance, with great music and a very happy crowd. My only minor complaint is that their music was too loud and Joe Duplantier sounded a bit low. Biggest highlight for me, of course, was the mind blowing Mario Duplantier on drums. Thank you very much for a great night and à bientôt!
