Πολύ συχνά ξεκινώντας να γράψω για ένα άλμπουμ διχάζομαι ανάμεσα στην επιλογή να γράψω για κάθε ένα από τα τραγούδια ή την συνολική αίσθηση της κυκλοφορίας ώστε να αφήσω στον αναγνώστη την ελευθερία να βγάλει τα δικά του συμπεράσματα με τα αυτιά και το δικό του κριτήριο. Βλέπεις αν πάρεις τον αναγνώστη σου από το χέρι και αρχίσεις να του γράφεις ξεχωριστά για κάθε τραγούδι είναι σαν να του δίνεις πρώτα το «λυσάρι» και μετά τις ασκήσεις.
Ξεκινώντας να γράφω για το Maere, το πέμπτο κατά σειρά άλμπουμ των Harakiri For The Sky που κυκλοφόρησε 19 Φεβρουαρίου 2021 από την AOP Records αντιμετώπισα και πάλι το ίδιο δίλημμα. Γιατί παρόλο που δεν θέλω να καθοδηγώ τον αναγνώστη σα λυσάρι είναι τόσος ο ενθουσιασμός για αυτή την κυκλοφορία που θέλω να γράψω δεκάδες πράγματα για μικρές και μεγάλες λεπτομέρειες που περιέχονται σε κάθε τραγούδι! Ναι, σε κάθε τραγούδι! Βοηθάνε βέβαια και οι Αυστριακοί που δεν βάζουν νερό στο κρασί τους, και κρατάνε τις διάρκειες των τραγουδιών μεγάλες και τις συνθέσεις τους πολυεπίπεδες, και έτσι η «ζύμωση» γίνεται πιο σύνθετη και γεμάτη με κάθε επιπλέον ακρόαση. Σε μπέρδεψα;
Αν έχεις μια εξοικείωση με τη μπάντα, αντιλαμβάνεσαι ακριβώς τι εννοώ γιατί είναι το βασικό χαρακτηριστικό αυτών των «post black metal»άδων να μην φτιάχνουν απλές συνθέσεις, αλλά να χτίζουν κλιμακωτές συνθέσεις, που ωριμάζουν καθώς εξελίσσονται, σα μικρά μελωδικά παραμύθια που δεν έχουν στόχο το να περάσουν απευθείας το μήνυμα τους αλλά να σε κάνουν να απολαύσεις τη διαδρομή και ίσως να σε οδηγήσουν σε ένα απροσδόκητο τέλος. Οι Harakiri For The Sky έχουν γοητευτικές μακρόσυρτες μελωδίες που χτίζονται μεθοδικά και οδηγούν σε ένα ξέσπασμα σπαρακτικό σαν τα γεμάτα συναίσθημα φωνητικά του JJ που συχνά μοιάζουν με λυγμό που βγαίνει μέσα απ’ την ψυχή του. Σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία έχουν ένα ακόμη χαρακτηριστικό που θεωρώ ότι απογείωσε το αποτέλεσμα και αυτό δεν είναι άλλο από την απόλυτη μηχανή στα drums που ακούει στο όνομα Krimh (Kerim “Krimh” Letchner ναι αυτός των Septic Flesh). Η συμμετοχή του σε κάθε τραγούδι δίνει το κάτι διαφορετικό και πιο ενδιαφέρον. Έπιασα τον εαυτό μου να ακούει το άλμπουμ και να κάνω αμέσως δεύτερη ακρόαση για να προσέξω τι έχει κάνει σε κάθε τραγούδι.
Ένα ακόμη σημείο που ξεχωρίζει σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία είναι η συμμετοχή του Neige (Alcest) στο Sing For The Damage We’ve Done. Σε μια σύνθεση που από μόνη της σε κερδίζει από το πρώτο άκουσμα η φωνή του Neige δίνει το επιπλέον kick. Αχ μη ξεχάσω να πω ότι έχει και μια διασκευή στο Song To Say Goodbye των Placebo, αρκετά ενδιαφέρουσα αλλά όχι και lifechanging.
Μοναδικό σημείο που μπορεί να ενοχλήσει τους μη εξοικειωμένους με τον ήχο του συγκροτήματος είναι η διάρκεια τόσο των τραγουδιών όσο και του άλμπουμ στο σύνολό του. Θα με ρωτήσεις κουράζει; Ξεκάθαρα όχι. Είναι τόσο όμορφα δομημένο κάθε τραγούδι που περιμένεις να δεις τι έρχεται παρακάτω.
Από τις μικρές ιστορίες των Harakiri ερωτεύτηκα με το πρώτο άκουσμα το I Pallbearer, το Sing For The Damage We’ve Done, το Us Against December Skies (τι τύμπανα είναι αυτάααα;), το And Oceans Between Us, το μυστηριώδες και στοιχειωτικό, σχεδόν σπειροειδές με riff που σε καταπίνουν Three Empty Words, το δροσερό Once Upon A Winter, αλλά και το νοσταλγικό I’m All About The Dusk… Θα μου πεις πολλά δεν είναι; Με το ζόρι δεν έβαλα κι άλλα! Το Maere είναι ένα καθηλωτικό ταξίδι μέσα στον ίδιο σου τον εαυτό και τα συναισθήματα που σου γεννά. Απόλαυσε το!

ENGLISH VERSION
Very often once I begin to write about an album I feel torn between the option of writing for every song of the album or writing a more general description of the general aura of the album so that I allow the reader the freedom to draw his/her own conclusions based solely on their own criteria, taste, and ears. You see I think that if you take your reader by the hand and start writing about every song it’s like handing out the answers, before handing out the test.
When I began writing about Maere, the fifth album of Harakiri For The Sky which was released on February 19th 2021 through AOP Records, I faced the same dilemma. Because even though I don’t want to lead the reader on the enthusiasm is such that I want to write dozens of details for each song. Yeap every song! I have to admit that the boys from Vienna help a lot since they don’t take any shortcuts and maintain long songs and their songs layered and so final result becomes richer in taste each time you listen to it. Feeling confused yet?
If you are familiar with the band you can grasp what I mean because the main feature of the post black metallers is to keep their songwriting elaborate, escalating, ever growing as they unfold like small fairytales who don’t rush to give you their message but expect you to enjoy the ride and maybe come to an unexpected ending. Harakiri For The Sky have long enchanting melodies, that build up and lead to crushing crescendos filled with emotion, like the reeking with emotion vocals of JJ that ever so often sound like the weeping cry directly from his soul. In this particular release, the one thing that escalated the result to extreme heights is the ultimate drum monster by the name Krimh (Kerim “Krimh” Letchner yeap the one in Septic Flesh). His participation in every song adds something different and intriguing. I caught myself going back to the songs in order to better listen what he did.
Another point that sticks out is the guest appearance of Neige (Alcest) in Sing For The Damage We’ve Done. In a song that stands out all by itself Neige adds the extra kick. I better not forget to mention the cover on Song To Say Goodbye of Placebo, which is rather interesting but not lifechanging.
The only point that might be conceived as a negative is the duration of the songs and the entire album. Is it tiring, you might ask… No not at all. Every song is so beautifully structured that you can’t wait to find out what comes next.
From the lovely fairytales of Harakiri I fell inlove at first listen with I Pallbearer, Sing For The Damage We’ve Done, Us Against December Skies (my god the drumming), And Oceans Between Us, the mysterious, haunting, spiral riff devouring Three Empty Words, the crispy fresh Once Upon A Winter and the nostalgic I’m All About The Dusk… Too many? Not enough! Maere is a journey within yourself and the feelings that spring as you listen. Enjoy it..
