Αυτό είναι το άλμπουμ που «χρωστούσαν» οι IN FLAMES στους οπαδούς τους! Ήδη από τα πρώτα single οι προσδοκίες είχαν σκαρφαλώσει αρκετά ψηλά και ήρθε το Foregone για να τις εκπληρώσει και να τις πάει και ένα βήμα παραπάνω.
Παρόλο που εγώ είμαι μια από τους οπαδούς που ακολουθούν πιστά το συγκρότημα και μου αρέσουν ακόμη και οι πιο εμπορικές τους απόπειρες δεν μπορώ να μη νιώσω συγκίνηση ακούγοντας το άλμπουμ που επαναφέρει όλα τα στοιχεία του μελωδικού death metal που αγαπάμε από τους Σουηδούς. Είμαι από αυτούς που θεωρώ ότι χρειάστηκε ένα σκούντημα από τους THE HALO EFFECT για να νιώσουν ότι απειλούνται ώστε να αφιερώσουν περισσότερο κόπο και να επανασυνδεθούν με τις ρίζες του ήχου τους. Επαναφορά των σκληρών riff βγαλμένα μέσα από τα μονοπάτια των μπαμπάδων AT THE GATES, σκληρά φωνητικά αλλά και μελωδίες που πάντα ήξεραν να φτιάχνουν.
Επιπλέον μπόνους βέβαια σε σχέση με το παρελθόν τους, είναι η εμπειρία και η ωριμότητα. Οι στίχοι που προκαλούν προβληματισμό αλλά και ένα κλείσιμο του ματιού σε αυτούς που τους αγαπούν για τα καθαρά φωνητικά τους και για τον τρόπο που κάνουν σκληρά τραγούδια βατά για λιγότερο εξοικειωμένους ακροατές.
Όπως αναφέρουν και οι ίδιοι “Κατά κάποιο τρόπο, ακούγεται ηλίθιο να λέμε ότι θέλαμε να γίνουμε πιο ‘metal’, γιατί πάντα νιώθαμε ότι ήμασταν”, παρατηρεί ο Fridén. “Τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια, ο κόσμος έγινε ακόμα πιο εχθρικός και κακός με ορισμένους τρόπους. Έχουμε έναν πόλεμο στην Ευρώπη. Οι άνθρωποι, γενικά, είναι πιο αγχωμένοι. Όλη αυτή η ενέργεια και ο θυμός βοήθησαν να τροφοδοτηθεί αυτό το άλμπουμ. Πήγαμε για να κάνουμε κάτι επίκαιρο, πιο βαρύ και ναι, ‘πιο metal'”.
Ο Gelotte συμφωνεί. “Κάναμε ένα επιθετικό άλμπουμ. Κρατήσαμε τη δυναμική, μερικά μεγάλα επικά ρεφρέν, βαριές κιθάρες, πολλά kick drums και μελωδίες. Αυτοί είμαστε και αυτοί που ήμασταν πάντα”.
Το Foregone είναι το δεύτερο άλμπουμ των IN FLAMES με τον μπασίστα Bryce Paul και τον ντράμερ Tanner Wayne, το πρώτο με τον πρώην κιθαρίστα των MEGADETH Chris Broderick και το τρίτο με τον βραβευμένο με Grammy παραγωγό Howard Benson (MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THREE DAYS GRACE). Ο Mike Plotnikoff (ALL THAT REMAINS, WARBRINGER) έκανε τη μηχανική επιμέλεια στα West Valley Recording Studios του Benson. Ο Joe Rickard (10 YEARS, STARSET, DIAMANTE), ο οποίος έπαιξε ντραμς για τους IN FLAMES από το 2016 έως το 2019, ανέλαβε τη μίξη.
Δεν θα ξεχωρίσω τραγούδια θα πω μόνο ότι είναι ήδη στις καλύτερες κυκλοφορίες της χρονιά και θα κλείσω όπως ξεκίνησα. Το Foregone που κυκλοφορεί 10 Φεβρουαρίου από την Nuclear Blast είναι το άλμπουμ που «χρωστούσαν» οι IN FLAMES στους οπαδούς τους. Μη το χάσετε!

This is the album that IN FLAMES “owed” their fans! Already from the first singles the expectations had climbed quite high and Foregone came to fulfill them and take them one step further.
Even though I am one of the fans who follow the band faithfully and I like even their most commercial attempts, I can’t help but feel a thrill listening to the album that brings back all the elements of melodic death metal we love from the Swedes. I’m one of those people who think it took a nudge from THE HALO EFFECT to feel threatened enough to put more effort into it and reconnect with the roots of their sound. Reintroducing the hard riffs pulled from the paths of dads AT THE GATES, hard vocals but also melodies they always knew how to make.
Extra bonus of course compared to their past, is experience and maturity. The lyrics are thought provoking but also a wink to those who love them for their clean vocals and the way they make hard songs accessible to less familiar listeners.
As they themselves state, “In some ways, it sounds stupid to say that we wanted to be more ‘metal’, because we always felt like we were,” Fridén observes. “In the last couple of years, the world has become even more hostile and mean in certain ways. We have a war in Europe. People, in general, are more stressed. All that energy and anger helped fuel this album. We went about making something topical, heavier and yes, ‘more metal’.”
Gelotte agrees. “We made an aggressive album. We kept the dynamics, some big epic choruses, heavy guitars, lots of kick drums and melodies. That’s who we are and who we’ve always been.”
Foregone is IN FLAMES’ second album with bassist Bryce Paul and drummer Tanner Wayne, the first with former MEGADETH guitarist Chris Broderick and the third with Grammy Award-winning producer Howard Benson (MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THREE DAYS GRACE). Mike Plotnikoff (ALL THAT REMAINS, WARBRINGER) engineered the album at Benson’s West Valley Recording Studios. Joe Rickard (10 YEARS, STARSET, DIAMANTE), who played drums for IN FLAMES from 2016 to 2019, handled the mix.
I won’t single out songs I’ll just say that they are already on the best releases of the year and I’ll end as I started. Foregone, out February 10 on Nuclear Blast, is the album that IN FLAMES “owed” their fans. Don’t miss it!
