Οι INSOMNIUM ιδρύθηκαν το 1997, στην πόλη Joensuu της Φιλανδίας και μπήκαν για πρώτη φορά στις καρδιές μας το 2002 με το ντεμπούτο τους In the Halls of Awakening. Από τότε έχουν κυκλοφορήσει πολλά εξαιρετικά άλμπουμ, με το Anno 1696 να είναι το 9o full studio album τους, που θα κυκλοφορήσει στις 24 Φεβρουαρίου 2023 από την Century Media Records.
Το Anno 1696 αποτελείται από 8 κομμάτια (50’) και μας ταξιδεύει σε έναν κόσμο θλιβερό αλλά ταυτόχρονα ελπιδοφόρο, μέσα στα γοητευτικά και παγωμένα τοπία των χιλιάδων λιμνών. Οι INSOMNIUM μας διηγούνται μουσικές ιστορίες από μία εποχή αναταραχής, μεταξύ των 1696-1697, αφού ο λιμός που ξέσπασε στη Φινλανδία τότε σκότωσε το 30% του πληθυσμού, ενώ την ίδια περίοδο το κυνήγι μαγισσών ήταν σε πλήρη εξέλιξη σε όλη την Ευρώπη. Το άλμπουμ επίσης αποτελεί φόρο τιμής στο θρυλικό φινλανδικό μυθιστόρημα “Sudenmorsian” της Aino Kallas, μια από τις μοναδικές ιστορίες λυκανθρώπων που έχουν αναδυθεί ποτέ από τη Φιλανδία. Στιχουργικά όλες οι ιστορίες είναι γραμμένες από τον τραγουδιστή/μπασίστα των INSOMNIUM, Niilo Sevanen.
Για ακόμα μια φόρα οι Φιλανδοί αποδεικνύουν μέσω του Anno 1696 πως είναι μοναδικοί στο να συνδυάζουν ήχους σκοταδιού, ελπίδας και μελαγχολίας μέσα από τις συναρπαστικές μελωδίες τους. Από τις λιτές συγχορδίες και τα σπαρακτικά ηχοτοπία που ανοίγουν τον δίσκο με το κομμάτι 1696, στο μουσικά και φωνητικά εξαιρετικό εξάλεπτο White Christ, με την συμμετοχή του Sakis Tolis (Rotting Christ), και το εκπληκτικά όμορφο και ατμοσφαιρικό Godforsaken με την συμμετοχή της Johanna Kurkela, το Anno 1696 είναι ένα soundtrack απόγνωσης που σε παρασύρει μέσα του και σε τυλίγει σφιχτά στα παγωμένα κλαδιά του. Η μαγεία του είναι πως όσο παγωμένο και θλιβερό κι αν είναι, καταφέρνει να σου ζεστάνει την καρδιά και θέλεις να παραμείνεις μπλεγμένος στα κλαδιά του καθ’ όλη τη διάρκειά του.
Με το Anno 1696 οι INSOMNIUM μας παρουσιάζουν ένα σκοτεινό και θλιμμένο άλμπουμ το οποίο προκαλεί εγκάρδια και ζεστά συναισθήματα. Ένα ταξίδι στο σκοτάδι και το φως, μέσα από blackened αύρες, gothic/doom ατμόσφαιρες, folk αναπνοές, υπέροχες μελωδικές death συνθέσεις, υπνωτικούς ρυθμούς, κοφτερά riffs και ατελείωτες συναισθηματικές κορυφώσεις. Συνθετικά, στιχουργικά και εκτελεστικά οι INSOMNIUM βρίσκονται στο αποκορύφωμά τους, χαρίζοντάς μας κάποιες από τις πιο όμορφες και μεστές δημιουργίες της καριέρας τους.
Μουσικές ιστορίες απόγνωσης, χαμού, παράνοιας και πόθου. Το Anno 1696 είναι ένα πλούσιο, μυστηριώδες μουσικό ταξίδι, φτιαγμένο με πάθος και ειλικρίνεια, με τους INSOMNIUM να εκφράζουν εντυπωσιακά τόσες πολλές πλευρές της ανθρώπινης πραγματικότητας, μετατρέποντας τους τότε σκοτεινούς εφιάλτες σε φωτεινά μουσικά όνειρα; την θλίψη σε ομορφιά. INSOMNIUM was founded in 1997, in the city of Joensuu, Finland, and broke into our hearts for the first time in 2002 with their debut album In the Halls of Awakening. Since then they have released many excellent albums, with Anno 1696 being their 9th full studio album, which will be released on February 24, 2023 via Century Media Records.
Anno 1696 consists of 8 tracks (50′) and takes us on a journey to a world that is sad yet hopeful, amidst the charming and icy landscapes of the Thousand Lakes. INSOMNIUM tell us musical stories from a time of turmoil, between 1696-1697, as the famine that broke out in Finland at that time killed 30% of the population, while at the same time the witch-hunt was in full swing throughout Europe. The album also pays homage to the legendary Finnish novel “Sudenmorsian” by Aino Kallas, one of the only werewolf stories ever to emerge from Finland. Lyrically all stories are written by INSOMNIUM’s singer/bassist Niilo Sevanen.
Once again the Finns prove through Anno 1696 that they are unique in combining sounds of darkness, hope and melancholy through their compelling melodies. From the simple chords and heartbreaking soundscapes that open the album with track 1696, to the musically and vocally six-minute excellence of White Christ, featuring Sakis Tolis (Rotting Christ), and the stunningly beautiful and atmospheric Godforsaken, featuring Johanna Kurkela, Anno 1696 is a soundtrack of despair that draws you in and wraps you tightly in its icy branches. Its magic is that as cold and sad as it is, it manages to warm your heart and you want to stay entangled in its branches throughout its duration.
INSOMNIUM’s Anno 1696 is a dark and sad album that evokes heartfelt and warm feelings. A journey through darkness and light through blackened auras, gothic/doom atmospheres, folk breaths, wonderful melodic death compositions, hypnotic rhythms, sharp riffs and endless emotional climaxes. Compositionally, lyrically and execution-wise INSOMNIUM are at their peak, giving us some of the most beautiful and meticulous creations of their career.
