Την πρώτη φορά που είδα αυτή τη μπάντα να περνάει από το μπροστά μου ήταν σε ανάρτηση του αγαπημένου μου φίλου και τραγουδιστή των Daylight Misery Βασίλη Μάζαρη να μιλά με ανεξέλεγκτο ενθουσιασμό για τους Iotunn.
Άκουσα το τραγούδι που είχε δημοσιευτεί και εγώ και ομολογώ ότι ήταν κάτι πρωτόγνωρο και οικείο ταυτόχρονα αυτό που άκουσα, οπότε περίμενα να έρθει στα χέρια μου η κυκλοφορία πως και πως. Όταν έφτασε στα χέρια μου το Access All Worlds δεν βιάστηκα να το ακούσω. Περίμενα τη στιγμή που θα μπορούσα να του αφοσιωθώ και να εμβαθύνω γιατί αυτό που πλημμυρίζει τα αυτιά σου με τις μελωδίες αυτής της μπάντας δεν είναι το είδος της μουσικής που ακούς κάνοντας κάτι άλλο παράλληλα. Η μουσική που γράφουν οι Iotunn είναι πρωταγωνιστής, είναι μεστή, πολυεπίπεδη, πλούσια σε ήχους, παραγωγή, μελωδία σα να ανθίζει και να αναρριχάται γύρω σου. Έχεις δει ποτέ στο παραμύθι με τον Jack και τη φασολιά που η φασολιά φυτρώνει και ανεβαίνει και χάνεται στα σύννεφα και στη διαδρομή έχει μπλέξει μαζί και τον Jack και τον έχει ανεβάσει και τον ίδιο στα σύννεφα; Έτσι είναι αυτές οι μελωδίες. Σα διηγήματα που βουτάς μέσα τους και σε παίρνουν μαζί τους.
Το είδος τους θα σου θυμίσει Amon Amarth αλλά με ένα υπέροχο ακροβατισμό στα καθαρά φωνητικά που θα σου θυμίσουν τον λυρισμό του Einar Solberg (Leprous) ή και τη σπαρακτική χροιά του Alan Averill (Primordial). Τα τραγούδια τους είναι μεγάλα σε διάρκεια αλλά έχουν το μοναδικό χαρακτηριστικό να μην θέλεις να τελειώσουν. Στις αρχές του 2020 τα αδέρφια Jesper και Jens Nicolai μαζί με τον Bjørn βρέθηκαν στη Σουηδία που ο Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, At the Gates, Dimmu Borgir) επιμελήθηκε τη μίξη και το master του άλμπουμ τους στα Fredman Studios. Οι ίδιοι μιλούν για τη μουσική τους σαν ένα επικό, αστρικό ταξίδι, εγώ θα σου πω ότι από όπου κι αν πιάσεις αυτή την κυκλοφορία μιλάει στην ψυχή σου. Είναι εντυπωσιακό το πόσο μπορεί να σε συγκινήσει, να σου προκαλέσει συναισθήματα να σε παρασύρει σε υπέροχα κιθαριστικά σόλο, με καταιγιστικά drums που σφυροκοπούν ακατάπαυστα σε μεγάλες ταχύτητες χωρίς να επισκιάζουν τις μελωδίες. Brutal και καθαρά φωνητικά μπλέκονται σε ένα παιχνίδι ανάμεσα στο σκοτάδι και το φως που είναι θεατρικό και συναισθηματικό ταυτόχρονα… Ειδικά σε τραγούδια όπως το ομότιτλο και το Laihems Golden Pits.
Θεωρώ τον εαυτό μου αρκετά επιδέξιο με τις λέξεις κι όμως αυτό το συναίσθημα που σε γεμίζει αυτό το άλμπουμ είναι πραγματικά αποστομωτική! Αν σου αρέσουν οι Amon Amarth, Agalloch, Insomnium, Primordial, Harakiri For The Sky, αν νιώθεις ότι μπορείς να ακούσεις με την ψυχή σου ανοιχτή να παρασυρθεί από τη μελωδία μη χάσεις αυτό το διαμάντι, δεν θα το συγχωρήσεις ποτέ στον εαυτό σου…. The very first time I saw this band was in a post my beloved friend and singer of Daylight Misery Vasilis Mazaris had made talking with unstoppable enthusiasm about Iotunn.
I listened to the song that was uploaded in youtube and I have to admit that it was something new and familiar at the same time so I was impatient to get my hands on their debut album. When it finally came I took my time to listen to Access All Worlds. I didn’t want to rush and listen to it while accupied with something else. I felt it demanded my undivided attention in order to dive into it, savor it. Because what Access All Worlds is floods your ears, it needs to be your main focus. The music this band is presenting is a lead character, it’s rich, multidimentional in sound, production and melody. It blooms and it surrounds you. Have you ever watched that fairytale with Jack and beanstalk when the beans are planted and the plant grows into a gigantic size into the clouds and it takes Jack along up? That’s the what these melodies are like. Like stories you lose yourself into that transcend you into another world.
Their style will remind you of Amon Amarth but with a skillful lingering between clean and brutal vocals which might bring to mind the lyric style of Einar Solberg (Leprous) or the crushing- heartbreaking color of Alan Averill (Primordial). Their songs are long in duration yet you don’t want them to end. In the beginning of 2020 the brothers Jesper and Jens Nicolai along with Bjørn got to Sweden and worked with Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, At the Gates, Dimmu Borgir) on the mix and master of the album in Fredman Studios. The band itself talks about its music describing it as an epic, cosmic journey. I would say that every single aspect of this release stirs your soul. It’s surprisingly impressive how much it can move you and invoke emotions, draw you into guitar solos with crushing drumming hammering down relentlessly without overruling the impeccable melodies. Brutal and clean vocals entwine in a game of hide and seek between darkness and light which is both theatrical and emotional… Especially in songs such as the title track and Laihems Golden Pits.
I consider myself to be quite good with words and yet I find myself in awe. Because the feeling that floods you with this album is beyond overwhelming! If you like bands such as Amon Amarth, Agalloch, Insomnium, Primordial, if you feel you can listen with your soul open to be blown away don’t miss out on this gem, you’ll never forgive yourself.
