PARADISE LOST – At The Mill (Nuclear Blast)

Το 2020 ήταν μία χρονιά που το live-streaming μπήκε για τα καλά στις ζωές μας, σε μία προσπάθεια να κρατηθεί ζωντανή η φλόγα μεταξύ ακροατών-καλλιτεχνών.

Οι Paradise Lost κυκλοφόρησαν το Obsidian το 2020, αλλά δεν είχαν την ευκαιρία να το μοιραστούν ζωντανά μ’έμας, κι έτσι τον Νοέμβριο του 2020 αποφάσισαν να κάνουν ένα livestream, στο The Mill NightClub στo Bradford του Yorkshire.

Το live ξεκινάει με μία έκπληξη, μεταφέροντάς μας πίσω στο 1993 και σ’ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα κομμάτια του Icon, το Widow. Οι Paradise Lost έχουν ήδη την απόλυτη προσοχή μας. Fall from Grace από το Obsidian (2020) και Blood and Chaos από το υπέροχο Medusa (2017) ακολουθούν. Έχοντας ακούσει τα τρία πρώτα κομμάτια έχεις ήδη καταλάβει με το τι έχουμε να κάνουμε. Ο Nick Holmes με άψογα growl και καθαρά φωνητικά, κιθάρες και μπάσο ακούγονται κρύσταλο και τα drums του Waltteri δίνουν σε κάθε κομμάτι το απαραίτητο feel, χαρίζοντάς μας ένα άλμπουμ που εγγυημένα αντιπροσωπεύει την 30ετή ιστορία των Paradise Lost. Εδώ να σημειώσω πως στο Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us (2009) πιστέυω πως ο Holmes έδωσε τον καλύτερό του εαυτό.

Φυσικά θα ακούσεις κομμάτια από το Obsidian, αλλά και κομμάτια που ίσως δεν περίμενεις, όπως το πιο Depeche Mode-influenced So Much is Lost από το Host (1999) αλλά και το doom Beneath Broken Earth του Plague Within (2015). Το Shadowkings είναι το μόνο κομμάτι που αντιπροσωπεύει το Draconian Times, ίσως προς απογοήτευση ή έκπληξη πολλών. Ως μεγάλη fan του Draconian Times είμαι απόλυτα ικανοποιημένη με αυτό, αφού πρώτον είναι ένα υπέροχο κομμάτι, αψεγάδιαστα εκτελεσμένο και δεύτερον μέσα από μία 30ετή καριέρα, σίγουρα το να διαλέξεις ένα ικανοποιητικό για όλους tracklist δεν είναι εύκολο. Το άλμπουμ κλείνει με το opener του Obsidian, το μελωδικό Darker Thoughts, με ακουστικές κιθάρες και κλασικά έγχορδα τα οποία μετατρέπονται σε doom ήχους σε λίγα μόνο λεπτά, θυμίζοντάς μας την μοναδική ικανότητα των Paradise Lost να μας εκπλήσσουν ευχάριστα. To soundmix του άλμπουμ δεν απογοητεύει και ανταπεξέρχεται πολύ ικανοποιητικά στις μουσικές απαιτήσεις όλων των κομματιών.

16 κομμάτια από 11 albums μας δίνουν 75’ γεμάτα “από καρδιάς Paradise Lost“. Ένα εκπληκτικό ταξίδι στον χρόνο, ένα ταξίδι σε ήχους gothic, doom-death με synth-pop πινελιές, καλύπτοντας όλες τις πτυχές της 30ετούς καριέρας του θρυλικού quartet και αφήνοντάς μας να ανυπομονούμε να τους δούμε ζωντανά μέσα στο 2022.

2020 was a year during which live-streaming entered our lives for good, in an effort to keep the flame between listeners and artists alive.

Paradise Lost released Obsidian in 2020, but didn’t get the chance to share it live with us, so in November 2020 they decided to perform a livestream, at The Mill NightClub in Bradford, Yorkshire.

The live starts with a surprise, taking us back to 1993 and one of Icon‘s biggest tracks, Widow. Paradise Lost already have our full attention. Fall from Grace from Obsidian (2020) and Blood and Chaos from the wonderful Medusa (2017) follow. Having listened to the first three tracks you already know what we’re dealing with. Nick Holmes with impeccable growls and clean vocals, guitars and bass sound crystal clear and Waltteri‘s drums give each track the necessary feel, granting us an album that is guaranteed to represent the 30-year history of Paradise Lost. I should note here that on Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us (2009) I believe Holmes gave us his absolute best.

Of course you’ll listen to tracks from Obsidian, but also tracks you might not expect, such as the more Depeche Mode-influenced So Much is Lost from Host (1999) and the doom beneath Broken Earth from Plague Within (2015). Shadowkings is the only track that represents Draconian Times, perhaps to the disappointment or surprise of many. As a great fun of Draconian Times I’m completely satisfied with this, as firstly it’s a great track, flawlessly executed and secondly through a 30 year career, surely picking a satisfying track list for everyone is not easy. The album closes with Obsidian’s opener, the melodic Darker Thoughts, with acoustic guitars and classic strings that turn into doom sounds in just a few minutes, reminding us of Paradise Lost’s unique ability to pleasantly surprise us. The sound mix of the album doesn’t disappoint and meets the musical demands of all the tracks very satisfyingly.

16 tracks from 11 albums give us 75′ of heartfelt Paradise Lost. An amazing journey through time, a journey through gothic, doom-death sounds with synth-pop touches, covering all aspects of the legendary quartet’s 30-year career and leaving us looking forward to seeing them live in 2022.
