THE TEMPLE – OF SOLITUDE TRIUMPHANT (I HATE RECORDS)

Πάνω στην λήξη βέβαια έχουμε και την κυκλοφορία του Of Solitude Triumphant, του δεύτερου δίσκου των THE TEMPLE.

Δύσκολα θα ξεχωρίσεις κομμάτι, καθώς ο δίσκος απαιτεί πολλαπλές ακροάσεις και είναι φτιαγμένος για ενιαία ακρόαση, πάραυτα τα Profound Loss, Premonition of the Final Hour και The Lord of Light αποτελούν τα δυνατά χαρτιά του δίσκου.

English Version Below

The last moments of the year (calendar wise) are rightfully an ode to the wider gerne of doom. Both DOOMOCRACY in November and CANDLEMASS a few days ago have enriched their catalog with new releases. Right at the last moment, of course, we have the release of Of Solitude Triumphant, the second album by THE TEMPLE.

THE TEMPLE is a peculiar band to talk about, and their approach to doom metal is difficult as well. And of course, the word difficult doesn’t take away any positive sign, on the contrary, it puts them in a very special position and category, something that for a band with only 2 full length albums and 1 EP is very honorable. THE TEMPLE‘s sound and style is not for everyone, it doesn’t suit everyone and is not understood by everyone. Their music is not written for a wide range of listeners right from the start. For most people for whom the term doom refers to bands like those mentioned at the beginning of this article, Of Solitude Triumphant may not be the most ideal choice. Here we are dealing with an album of absolute litany, devotion and melancholy, dressed in exquisite ecclesiastical “copes”, followed by permanent polyphonic, Gregorian, I might add, chants.

Never judge anything by its cover they say, but in this case both the cover and the opening song of the album are fully representative of the whole. And speaking of beginnings, what more fitting way to open an album like this than with the great Mikis Theodorakis song Me to Lycho you Astrou, accompanied by Odysseus Elitis’ lyrics through Axion Esti? I don’t know which choir is responsible for this “cover”, but it is stunning. The duration of what is essentially the first track, The Foundations, which “introduces” the band and lasts over 10 minutes, is also a bold move. The length of the compositions is something that the band from Thessaloniki were not afraid of, as all the other tracks of the album, with the exception of one, are over 7 minutes. If something constitutes the essence of course of these compositions and by extension of the whole album is the countless riffs, the very good guitar melodies that are indeed the essential “orchestration” of the compositions and their so cleverly but also well thought out alternation from voice accompanying role to black metal mentalities main protagonist. I’ll even give an extra thumbs up for the very wise use of any keyboards in the background, they are marginally perceptible but of immense sonic importance to the final result and add a large percentage of the album’s monolithic sound. For the chants of course, which are also the main vocals, I will not elaborate further. Father Alex sounds obviously improved and is the center of THE TEMPLE‘s “mysteries”.

It’s hard to distinguish just one track, as the album requires multiple hearings and is made to be listened to as a whole, but Profound Loss, Premonition of the Final Hour and The Lord of Light are the strongest tracks of the album. A step further from their debut album, many levels up in my opinion, and if they continue like this I think they will be a serious force of  this “genre” in the near future.
