Το ημερολόγιο δείχνει 26 Οκτωβρίου του 2012, το πρώτο τότε άλμπουμ των KAMELOT με τον Tommy Karevik στα φωνητικά αποτελεί γεγονός με κάθε έννοια της λέξης, με την περιέργεια να έχει βαρέσει κόκκινο. Δεν αντικαθιστάς κάθε μέρα μία από τις πιο εμβληματικές φωνές του χώρου χωρίς το αναμενόμενο suspense. Θυμάμαι χαρακτηριστικά, η πρώτη μου αντίδραση από την αρχή ακόμα της ακρόασης να είναι από μέτρια μέχρι κακή. Δεν θα πάει καλά αυτό με έπιασα να λέω, έχοντας μία κάποια απογοήτευση στην χροιά της έκφρασης μου.
Πάμε 11 χρόνια μπροστά λοιπόν, γιατί τόσα χρόνια πάνε περίπου από την τελευταία φορά που αφιέρωσα ουσιαστικό χρόνο στους πάλαι ποτέ αγαπητούς μου KAMELOT. The Awakening λοιπόν, όνομα και πράγμα πραγματικά. Αφύπνιση σε κάθε επίπεδο, συνθετικό, μελωδικό συναισθηματικό. Μα πόσο όμορφα πράγματι στήνουν εικόνες και πράξεις ολόκληρες, απείρου λυρισμού και αισθητικής. Όταν βέβαια θέλουν και νιώθουν την ανάγκη, καθότι όλα τα παραπάνω τονίζονται ακόμα περισσότερο μόνο από την ίδια τους την απουσία σε αυτά τα 11 χρόνια και τις κυκλοφορίες του συγκροτήματος μέσα σε αυτά. Αναπόφευκτα, μεμονωμένες στιγμές και συνθέσεις θα βρεις σε κάθε τους βήμα αλλά πότε ξανά αυτό το μεγαλείο που τους εκτίναξε μέχρι και το Ghost Opera. Μέχρι τώρα αυτό βέβαια, γιατί στο 13ο δισκογραφικό τους βήμα τα πάνε εκπληκτικά. Η ουσιαστική αφηγηματική ροή τόσο στις συνθέσεις τις ίδιες όσο και στις λυρικές γραμμές κάνουν τρομερά αισθητά την επιστροφή τους. Σχεδόν συνειδητά θα τολμήσω να πω.
Η τετράγωνη προσέγγιση που είχαν μέχρι και τον προηγούμενο δίσκο, αυτή η επαναλαμβανόμενη τακτική του να γυρνάς συνεχόμενα γύρω από το εαυτό σου, αυτή η μία και μόνο προσέγγιση ως προς τα κλισέ του ιδίου σου του ήχου, που ουσιαστικά αυτοεγκλώβησε τους KAMELOT όλα αυτά τα χρόνια δείχνει να φεύγει. Να τολμάει να κοιτάξει μεν πίσω, στις χρυσές εποχές και παράλληλα να οραματίζεται το μετά, σφαιρικά και εμπλουτισμένα. Όχι υπό μόνιμη μανιέρα καθαρά και μόνο λόγο εμπορικής ίσως αποδοχής, αλλά ουσιαστικής όρεξης για το επόμενο βήμα. Για αυτό και ο τίτλος του δίσκου δεν θα μπορούσε να είναι και πιο ταιριαστός, Η μπάντα ξυπνάει από τον συνθετικό της λήθαργο και τεντώνει και πάλι τα άκρα της, ξεμουδιάζει για τα καλά σε κάτι που φέρει χρώμα από το παρελθοντικό της απόγειο και παράλληλα κρατάει και την ασφάλεια της, για παν ενδεχόμενο.
Επικό, θεατρικότατο, μελωδικό, ισορροπημένο, εμπνευσμένο επιτέλους άλμπουμ από μια μπάντα που κάποτε έπαιζε χωρίς συναγωνισμό. Επιθετικό, ρομαντικό, αφηγηματικό, χτισμένο πάνω σε πάρα μα πάρα πολύ ωραία riff και ακόμα πιο ωραίες φωνητικές γραμμές. Eventide με μπόλικο αέρα από Black Halo/Ghost Opera περίοδο, One More Flag In The Ground σαν τρανό παράδειγμα διαφορετικής προσέγγισης και πειραματισμού done right (αυτό το αύριο θέλουμε από την μπάντα μαζί με λίγο από το επόμενο κομμάτι στην σειρά), μαγεικό Opus Of The Night (Ghost Requiem) που πέρα από διαμάντι του δίσκου αποτελεί και θεματική συνέχεια της ιστορίας του Ghost Opera (εδώ ακριβώς είναι όλο το νόημα των KAMELOT), Bloodmoon και NightSky όπως και το μεγαλεπήβολο New Babylon αποτελούν σίγουρα τις δυνατότερες και σημαντικότερες στιγμές του δίσκου. Στενάχωρη διαπίστωση βέβαια, η μη εκμετάλλευση μιας τόσο χαρισματικής και πλούσιας φωνής όπως αυτή του Tommy Karevik μετά από τόσα χρόνια, ο οποίος δυστυχώς ακόμα κινείται και βρίσκεται υπό την σκιά του προκατόχου του. Αφήστε του τα λουριά ώστε να διαπρέψει πλήρως και μαζί με αυτόν και η ίδια η μπάντα. Μεγάλη χαρά βέβαια που αυτή η τόσο καλή δισκογραφική επιστροφή, η οποία θα αποτελέσει σημείο αναφοράς κατά την γνώμη μου από εδώ και πέρα, συνοδεύεται από ακόμα μία πανέμορφη δουλειά του δικού μας Γιάννη Νάκου και της Remedy Art Design. Συνεχίστε ότι κάνετε, είστε στην σωστή κατεύθυνση, επιτέλους.

The calendar shows October 26th, 2012, the first KAMELOT album with Tommy Karevik on vocals is an event on its own, with both curiosity and expectation on behalf of the fans at sky high. It’s not every day you replace one of the most iconic voices in the genre without the expected suspense. I distinctly remember my first reaction from the first couple of tracks being anything from mediocre to bad. That went well I found myself saying ironically, having a tone of disappointment in my voice.
So fast forward 11 years, because that’s about how many years have passed since the last time I spent any meaningful time with my once beloved KAMELOT. So, The Awakening indeed. Awakening on every level, compositional, melodically, emotionally. How beautifully they actually set up images and whole theatrical acts of infinite lyricism and aesthetics do they create. When they want and feel the need, of course, as all of the above is only further emphasized by their very absence in these 11 years and the band’s releases within that time. Inevitably, individual moments and compositions can be found in every of their albums, but never again will you find that greatness that they achieved until Ghost Opera. Until now that is, of course, because on their 13th record they are doing amazingly well. The substantial narrative flow in both the compositions themselves and the lyrical lines make their return tremendously noticeable. Almost consciously I would venture to say.
That kinda “square” approach that they had until the previous album, this repetitive tactic of constantly going around yourself, this one and only approach to the clichés of your own sound, which basically self confined KAMELOT all these years seems to be changing. Daring to look back to the golden age while envisioning the future, by looking at the whole picture and by adding to that from another perspective. Not under a permanent scope purely and simply for reasons of commercial acceptance, but of a substantial appetite for the next step. That’s why the title of the album couldn’t be more fitting, the band wakes up from its compositional slumber and stretches its muscles again, stretching them out for good in something that carries colour from its past peak and at the same time keeps its “safety measures”, just in case.
Epic, theatrical, melodic, balanced, inspired album from a band that once played without any competition. Aggressive, romantic, narrative, pounding with very, very nice riffs and even nicer vocal lines. Eventide with plenty of Black Halo/Ghost Opera period air, One More Flag In The Ground as a great example of a different approach and experimentation done right (this is the tomorrow we want from the band along with some of the next track in the mix), magical Opus Of The Night (Ghost Requiem) which apart from being the albums diamond track is also a continuation of the Ghost Opera story (this is exactly where the essence of KAMELOT is), Bloodmoon and NightSky as well as the extravagant New Babylon are definitely the strongest and most important moments of the album. With a sad realization of course, that such a charismatic and rich voice like that of Tommy Karevik is still not exploited after so many years, unfortunately still moves like and is under the shadow of his predecessor. Take the leash off so that he can fully excel and with him the band itself. It is of course a great joy that such a good record return, which will work as a benchmark in my opinion from now on, is accompanied by yet another beautiful work by our very own Yannis Nakos and Remedy Art Design. Keep doing what you’re doing, you’re in the right direction, finally.
