Ομολογώ ότι όταν άρχισα να γράφω ένα review για το Liquid Tension Experiment 3 (LTE3), ήμουν αρκετά διστακτική, διότι έχουμε να κάνουμε (κατά τη δική μου γνώμη πάντα), με το ιπποτικό instrumental quartet της progressive metal σκηνής. Αυτό το κείμενο δεν ξεκινάω να το γράφω ως review, αλλά ως μια έκθεση συναισθημάτων για ένα άλμπουμ που περίμενα να βγει εδώ και περίπου 18 χρόνια, μιας και η τελευταία τους δουλειά είχε κυκλοφορήσει το 1999, εγώ τους ανακάλυψα λίγα χρόνια μετά. Και για εσάς που ίσως να μην γνωρίζετε ποιοι είναι πίσω από το instrumental, progressive metal supergroup, Liquid Tension Experiment, είμαι εδώ για να σας διαφωτίσω.
Michael Portnoy: ιδρυτικό μέλος των Liquid Tension Experiment (1997), συνιδρυτικό μέλος και drummer των Dream Theater εως και το 2010, μέλος των Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, Sons of Apollo, Flying Colors.
John Petrucci: κιθαρίστας και ιδρυτικό μέλος των Dream Theater, έως και σήμερα. Δεν ξέρω τι θα μπορούσα να πρωτοπω για τον John Petrucci. “One of the most celebrated guitarists alive” και αδιαμφισβήτητα ο πιο ευέλικτος, πολυτάλαντος και επιδέξιος κιθαρίστας στον χώρο της progressive metal σκηνής, και όχι μονο.
Tony Levin: ειδικότητα του το ηλεκτρικό μπάσο, το Chapman stick, καθώς και το κλασικό μπάσο. Γνωστός για την συνεργασία του με King Crimson και Peter Gabriel, και με πολλές άλλες θρυλικές μορφές της μουσικής.
Jordan Rudess: keyboardist των Dream Theater έως και σήμερα. ‘Έχει συνεργαστεί με τους Blackfield, τον Steven Wilson και τους Ayeron. Έχει σπουδάσει κλασικό πιάνο και συνθέτει κλασική μουσική. Το 2011 σε poll του MusicRadar, ψηφίστηκε ως ο καλύτερος keyboardist of all time.
Και επιτέλους μετά από 22 χρόνια, λίγο τα αστέρια που ευθυγραμίστηκαν, ίσως και ο Covid19 που μπορει να ελευθέρωσε λίγο τα προγράμματά τους, και οι τέσσερις αυτοί βιρτουόζοι του prog metal έσμιξαν ξανα και μας χάρισαν το LTE3.
Αν έχετε ακούσει LTE γνωρίζετε πως το πρώτο track του κάθε album είναι απλά αυτό το μουσικό bang, που σου δίνει ένα συναίσθημα γλυκιάς μουσικής ταχυκαρδίας, και θέλεις να φωνάξεις δυνατά «take my breath away», ως μία άλλη Terri Nunn!
Και κάπως έτσι λοιπόν πατάς play και για τα πρώτα 30 δευτερόλεπτα ακούς το πιο μαγικό, breathtaking και ισώς το πιο οργανωμένο και συγχρονισμένο μουσικό χάος που έχεις ακουστεί από μία κιθάρα, ένα ηλέκτρικο μπάσο και από ενα σετ ντραμς. Και το όνομα αυτού, Hypersonic…όνομα και πράγμα που λέμε. Εκεί καπου στο 31’’ , θα πάρεις ΜΙΑ μόνο ανάσα, πριν ο Rudess συμπληρώσει το quartet, και τα ιδιαίτερα πλήκτρα του θα είναι πια ένα μέρος αυτού του μουσικού καταρράκτη. Το Hypersonic είναι ένα opener track παρόμοιας βαρύτητας με τα “Paradigm Shift” (LTE) και “Acid Raid” (LTE2); είναι ενα ηχήρο “We are back” και η επιβεβαίωση πως η φλόγα των LTE είναι ακόμα αναμμένη και έτοιμη να μας συνεπάρει στον τρελό χορό της. Άλλωστε όπως δήλωσε και ο J. Rudess σε συνέντευξή του στο Progradar.org: “We wanted something that would either attract or dispel the listener, I think that we succeeded on that score.”
Οι LTE συνεχίζουν με το Beating the Odds, ενα πολυ μελώδικο και upbeat track, από το οποίο φυσικά δε λείπει η απαράμιλλη τεχνική των μουσικών, μιάς και όλοι θα σταθούν κάτω απ’το spotlight για να αναδείξουν τη μοναδικότητά τους τεχνικά. Συνεχίζουμε με το πιο fluid και mellow Liquid Evolution, το οποίο γεγονός είναι πως με πήγε λίγο πίσω στο Liquid Dreams του LTE2, ενα ήρεμο και πολύ ταξιδιάρικο track, με τον Levin να μας παρασέρνει σε jazz fluid ήχους.
Aλλά μη χαλαρώνουμε και πολύ. To Passage of Time, είναι το επόμενο track, και είναι το αποτέλεσμα της πρώτης συνάντησης του quartet στο studio μετά απο 22 χρόνια, αποδεικνύοντας πως ο χρόνος είναι κάτι πολύ σχετικό. To Passage of Τime για εμένα προσωπικά είναι όλα όσα οι LTE εκπροσωπούν, έχει όλα τα μουσικά στοιχεία που τους κάνουν μοναδικούς. Ένα track που απογειώνεται με μεγαλωπρεπή riffs, γλυστράει πάνω σε δυνατές μελωδίες με νότες να εκτοξεύονται από παντού σε διαφορετικά tempo, αποδεικνύοντας το τεράστιο εύρος του quartet και υπενθυμίζοντας σε πολλούς πως το πολύ τεχνικό progressive metal μπορεί να εγκλείει πληθώρα συναισθημάτων και δεν είναι απλά ένα show off δεξιοτήτων, όπως πολλοί υποστηρίζουν.
Rhapsody in Blue για τη συνέχεια. Για όσους δε γνωρίζουν το Rhapsody in Blue είναι μία μουσική σύνθεση του George Gershwin, η οποία γεννήθηκε το 1924 και είναι ενα fusion κλασικής και jazz μουσικής. Μία σίγουρα πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα προσέγγιση, που ενώ διατηρεί και αναδεικνύει την αυθεντική μελωδία ταυτόχρονα, αρμονικά και μορφολογικά, την λύνει και την ξαναφτιάχνει απ’την αρχή.
Φυσικά απ’το album δεν θα μπορούσαν να λείπουν τα μουσικά 2-passenger ταξιδια των Portnoy-Levin και Petrucci-Rudess. Chris and Kevin’s Amazing Odyssey, το πρώτο μουσικό ταξίδι, στο οποίο ο Portnoy συναντά τον Levin, με τον τελευταίο να μας δίνει εκκεντρικούς Chapman stick ήχους περικυκλωμένους από τα συγκρατημένα αλλά μαγικά, θα έλεγε κανείς, drums του Portnoy, ζωγραφίζοντας ένα moody και experimental ηχητικό τοπίο. Aκολουθεί το Shades of Hope και το ταξιδι του Petrucci με τον Rudess. Ένα απλό, λιτό, απέριττο και πολύ όμορφο track, το οποίο ηχογραφήκε με μία μόνο εκτέλεση, και μας προετοιμάζει για το κλείσιμο του album.
Το Key to the Imagination βάζει τη τελεία στο LTE3. 13 λεπτά μέσα στα οποία μπορεί κανείς να ακούσει και να νιώσει το εύρος και τις ικανότητες όλων των μουσικών μαζί, αλλά και ξεχωριστά. Όλα τα μουσικά στοιχεία που έχεις ακόυσει μεμονωμένα σε κάθε track θα τα βρείς ενωμένα στο Key to the Imagination. Ένα track που προσφέρει ήρεμες, μελωδικές στιγμές οι οποίες με τις ξαφνικές αλλαγές tempo μετατρέπονται σε θεατρικά ξεσπάσματα, βαριά riffs και εκρηκτικά solo. Όλα αυτά είναι άρτια εκτελεσμένα και υπέροχα ισορροπημένα μεταξύ τους, δίνοντας μας έναν βαρύγδουπο και μοναδικό επίλογο.
Δεν θέλω να μπω στη διαδικασία να συγκρίνω τα 3 album που έχουν οι Liquid Tension Experiment στο ενεργητικό τους, όπως άλλοι μπορεί να έκαναν ήδη. Αρχικά θεωρώ πως η μουσική των LTE θέλει χρόνο, ακόμα κι αν είσαι εξοικειωμένος με την μουσική τους, κάθε φορά θα ακούς το κάθε κομμάτι θα ακούς και κάτι καινούργιο, μιλάμε για εκατομμύρια νότες προς διάφορες κατευθυνσεις το δευτερόλεπτο. Σαν μία ακροάτρια και fan των LTE θα πω πως εγώ άκουσα την ίδια μαγεία που είχα ακούσει κάπου το 2003, όταν για πρώτη φορά άκουσα τη μουσική τους. Θεωρώ πως το LTE3 δεν απογοητεύει όλους εμάς που υπομονετικά περιμέναμε την επιστροφή τους.
Δύο δεκαετίες μετά, σα να μην πέρασε μια μέρα και ένα πολυαναμενώμενο reunion, είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα ένα τεχνικά μεγαλειώδες και συναρπαστικά μελωδικό album, που πρέπει να ακουστεί με ανοιχτά αυτιά και πάνω απ’όλα με ανοιχτή καρδιά.

When I began writing a review on the new Liquid Tension Experiment 3 (LTE3), I was reluctant because this is (in my opinion) the chivalrous instrumental quartet of progressive metal. So don’t expect me to begin writing this text like a review but more like an essay on the emotions it evokes for me, as I have been waiting for more than 18 years for it. You see their last release was back in 1999 and I discovered them a bit later on. For those of you not familiar with the band let me introduce you to the instrumental, progressive metal supergroup, Liquid Tension Experiment.
Michael Portnoy: Founding member of Liquid Tension Experiment (1997), σco founder and drummer of Dream Theater up till 2010, band member of Neal Morse Band, Transatlantic, Sons of Apollo, Flying Colors.
John Petrucci: guitarist and founding member of Dream Theater, until today. I know not what would be more appropriate to say about Johnn Petrucci. But “One of the most celebrated guitarists alive” comes really close and undoubtedly the most diverse, talented guitarist in the progressive metal genre and not just it.
Tony Levin: specializes on electric base, Chapman stick, but also classic base. Well known for his collaboration with King Crimson and Peter Gabriel, among other legendary musicians.
Jordan Rudess: keyboardist of Dream Theater till today. He has collaborated with Blackfield, Steven Wilson and Ayeron. He studied classical piano and composes classical music. In 2011 he was voted the best keyboardist of all time in a poll for MusicRadar.
At last after 22 years, the stars aligned, or maybe covid gave them a bit more time in their hands and the four virtuosos got together once more to release LTE3.
If you’ve listened to LTE you know that the opening track is like the musical big bang which gives you that sweet music rush and you want to scream take my breath away», like another Terri Nunn!
And then you press play and the first 30 seconds are the most magical, breathtaking and maybe the most organized synchronized musical chaos you have ever listened to by one guitar, one electric base and a set of drums. Hypersonic… the most appropriate name! Somewhere around 31’’ , you will draw one breath just before Rudess joins in to complete the quartet with his keys and become a part of this unique musical waterfall. Hypersonic is an opener equivalent to “Paradigm Shift” (LTE) and “Acid Raid” (LTE2); it’s like a musical “We are back” and the affirmation that the LTE flame is lit and ready to take us in to it’s wild dance. As J. Rudess stated in an interview at Progradar.org: “We wanted something that would either attract or dispel the listener, I think that we succeeded on that score.”
LTE go on with Beating the Odds, a very melodic upbeat track, which reeks of technique since they take turns under the spotlightbto better showcase their mastery. They continue with the fluid and mellow Liquid Evolution, which took me back to Liquid Dreams from LTE2, a calm yet very transcending track, where Levin takes us into a dive into jazz fluid sounds.
But let us not relax too much. Passage of Time, makes the comeback as it also is the comeback track of their first in studio meeting after 22 years. Time is relevant after all. Passage of Τime is in my opinion everything LTE represent. It embodies all the elements the band and makes them unique. Α track with graceful riffs, that glides on strong melodies with notes that explode towards all directions glides on strong melodies and lingering on diverse tempos, proving the specter of the quartet Technical progressive metal can include many emotions, and it’s not all show off for the musicians.
Rhapsody in Blue. Rhapsody in Blue is a composition of George Gershwin, born in 1924, a fusion of classical and jazz music. An interesting approach which both maintains and enhances the melody by analyzing and recomposing it. The album would be incomplete without the 2-passenger trips of Portnoy-Levin and Petrucci-Rudess. Chris and Kevin’s Amazing Odyssey, the first where Portnoy meets Levin, and Champan offers eccentric stick sounds surrounded by the drums of Portnoy, composing a moody and experimental soundscape. Shades of Hope is the second trip of Petrucci with Rudess. A simple one take track just a breath away from the closing track.
Key to the Imagination is LTE3’s epilogue. 13 minutes that illustrate all the ability of the musicians and the elements in the tracks before combined into Key to the Imagination. A track with calm melodies and changes in tempo, theatrical outbursts, heavy riffs and explosive solos.
I don’t wat to judge the 3 albums of Liquid Tension Experiment as I think their music needs time to settle in. With every time you listen to it another element is revealed. As a listener and fan of LTE I’ll say I experienced the same magic as in 2003 when I listened to them for the first time. I don’t feel it’s disappointing at all. Two decades after, I feel like a day hasn’t passed and they released a technically great and melodically exciting album meant to be listened to with ears and heart open.
