Το deathcore δεν ήταν πότε (όπως λέμε κι εδώ στα βόρεια), my cup of tea, κυρίως λόγω αυτού του αποκλειστικά grimy ήχου και της έλλειψης μελωδικότητας, για τα δικά μου αυτιά τουλάχιστον. Αυτό όμως άλλαξε πέρυσι όταν έφαγα τη σφαλιάρα του To The Hellfire, του πρώτου single των LORNA SHORE από το EP And I Return To Nothingness του 2021.
Το Pain Remains είναι το 4ο studio άλμπουμ των LORNA SHORE που κυκλοφόρησε στις 14 Οκτωβρίου από την Century Media Records. Ένα πολύ-αναμενόμενο άλμπουμ με τους LORNA SHORE να έχουν περάσει από αρκετές αντιξοότητες για να φτάσουν εδώ και με την είσοδο του Will Ramos να εκτοξεύει την μπάντα.
To Pain Remains είναι ένα symphonic-meets-deathcore masterclass 10 κομματιών διάρκειας 1 ώρας, με τα τελευταία 3 να αποτελούν μία επική τριλογία; μία ιστορία που εστιάζει στα στάδια της θλίψης και της τρωτότητας και τα παραδειγματίζει μέσα από μια ιστορία αγάπης.
Από άποψη δομής το Pain Remains είναι στρωτό, δυναμικό και καθηλωτικό. Είναι ένα άλμπουμ χωρίς κενά και κυλάει σαν ρυάκι καθώς το τέλος κάθε τραγουδιού έχει ένα σημείο-κλειδί ώστε να περάσεις αρμονικά στο επόμενο. Είναι ένα αποκλειστικά ηχητικό άλμπουμ. Είναι επικό, συμφωνικό, κινηματογραφικό, μελωδικό αλλά και βίαιο, ζοφερό και ωμό. Συνδυάζει κάθε πτυχή των παραδοσιακών deathcore ήχων με τις πτυχές που έχουν ανεβάσει το deathcore σε αυτό που είναι σήμερα. Οι ενορχηστρώσεις είναι υπέροχες σε ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ παρέχοντας αυτή την αδυσώπητη σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα, η οποία είναι αβοήθητα ακαταμάχητη.
Τα ντραμς είναι ντοπαρισμένα από την αρχή ως το τέλος, δίνοντας την ευκαιρία στο άλμπουμ να εξελιχθεί αφού είναι η αδυσώπητη και σφοδρή δύναμη του Pain Remains, με τον Austin Archey να κρατάει το οχυρό. Οι κιθάρες των Adam De Micco και Andrew O’ Connor είναι δυναμικές και πιο ποικιλόμορφες, αφού ισορροπούν ανάμεσα σε καταιγιστικούς αλλά και πολύ μελωδικούς ήχους, παίζοντας μεγάλο ρόλο στο συναισθηματικό rollercoaster feeling που δημιουργεί το Pain Remains.
Αλλά το Pain Remains είναι και το φαινόμενο Will Ramos και το ασύλληπτο φωνητικό εύρος του, ξεδιπλώνοντας αβίαστα τα γρυλίσματα και τις κραυγές του, με θαυμάσιο αποτέλεσμα, που είτε θα κάνουν την καρδιά σου να χτυπάει πιο γρήγορα από ποτέ, είτε τόσο αργά που νιώθεις ότι αρχίζει και σφίγγεται; σαν την πιο γλυκιά κλειστοφοβία που έχεις νιώσει ποτέ.
Ναι, σίγουρα το Pain Remains ακολουθεί τη φόρμουλα του And I Return To Nothingness, και τι μ’ αυτό; Υπάρχει αρκετή ποικιλομορφία στη μελωδία και στις ενορχηστρώσεις ώστε να ακούγεται μοναδικό. Η ίδια φόρμουλα, διαφορετικές ιστορίες με τους LORNA SHORE να κάνουν εξαιρετική δουλειά και να αποδίδουν με αξιοθαύμαστη δεξιοτεχνία; από τη σύνθεση, την εκτέλεση, τη μίξη και το τελικό προϊόν.
Το Pain Remains είναι ένα συναισθητικό rollecoaster, μια κολεκτίβα επιθετικότητας, ωμότητας, άγχους, πόνου και κυρίως αγάπης. Οι LORNA SHORE έβαλαν το στοίχημα και το κέρδισαν και μένει να δούμε πόσο πιο ψηλά μπορούν να φτάσουν.

Deathcore was never my cup of tea, mainly because of this exclusively grimy sound and the lack of melodicism, for my ears at least. But that all changed last year when I got slapped with To The Hellfire, the first single from LORNA SHORE‘s first single from 2021’s EP And I Return To Nothingness.
Pain Remains is LORNA SHORE‘s 4th studio album released on October 14th via Century Media Records. A highly anticipated album with LORNA SHORE having gone through a lot of adversity to get here and with the addition of Will Ramos launching the band to the heavens.
Pain Remains is a symphonic-meets-deathcore masterclass of 10 tracks lasting 1 hour, with the last 3 of them being an epic trilogy, which according to the band is a story that focuses on the stages of grief and vulnerability and exemplifies them through a love story.
In terms of structure, Pain Remains is layered, dynamic and engaging. It’s an album without gaps and flows like a stream, as the end of each song has a key point to move harmoniously into the next. It’s an exclusively sonic album. It’s epic, symphonic, cinematic, melodic but also violent, grim and raw. It combines every aspect of traditional deathcore sounds with the these aspects that have elevated deathcore to what it is today. The orchestrations are superb throughout the album providing that relentless dark atmosphere that is helplessly irresistible.
The drums are on steroids from start to finish, giving the album a chance to evolve as they are the relentless and fierce force of Pain Remains, with Austin Archey holding down the fort. Adam De Micco’s and Andrew O’Connor’s guitars are powerful and more diverse, as they balance between thunderous and melodic sounds, playing a big part in the emotional rollercoaster feeling Pain Remains creates.
But Pain Remains is also about the phenomenon called Will Ramos and their unimaginable vocal range, effortlessly unfurling their growls and screams to wonderful effect, which will either make your heart beat faster than ever or so slowly that you feel it starts to clench; like the sweetest claustrophobia you’ve ever felt.
Yeah, sure, Pain Remains follows the formula of And I Return To Nothingness, so what? There’s enough diversity in the melody and the orchestrations to make it sound unique. Same formula, different stories with LORNA SHORE doing a terrific job and delivering with admirable skill, from composition, to performance, to mixing and to the final product.
Pain Remains is an emotional rollercoaster, a collective of aggression, rawness, angst, pain and most importantly love. LORNA SHORE placed the bet and won it, and it remains to be seen how much higher they can reach.
