Solar Paroxysm είναι ο τίτλος του atmospheric black metal άλμπουμ, με κοσμική παρακαλώ θεματολογία, από την μπάντα Mare Cognitum, που κυκλοφόρησε τον Μάρτιο του 2021 απ’την I, Voidhanger Records, έπεσε όμως στην αντίληψή μου πριν λίγο καιρό. Η Mare Cognitum, είναι η one-man-band του Jason Buczarski, ο οποίος όχι μόνο τα κάνει όλα και συμφέρει αλλά όπως φαίνεται τα κάνει και πάρα πολύ καλά. Το Solar Paroxysm είναι το πέμπτο full-length άλμπουμ της μπάντας.
Τι θα ακούσουμε λοιπόν;
Ατμοσφαιρικό cosmic-black metal, με ethereal, blackgaze αλλά και πολλά progressive στοιχεία, με κάποιες ξεκάθαρες doom/death metal επιρροές. Το άλμπουμ αποτελείται από 5 κομμάτια, τα οποία διαρκούν σχεδόν 10 λεπτά το ένα, χτίζοντας μια ιστορία που μας μιλά για το πως οι άνθρωποι καταστρέφουμε τον πλανήτη μας, την κλιματική αλλαγή, αλλά και για το πως κοινωνικά φαινόμενα όπως ο ρατσισμός, ο φασισμός και το μίσος, αποτελούν τη πληγή αυτού του κόσμου. Μουσικά αυτό μεταφράζεται σε αιθέριες αλλά και ταυτόχρονα πλούσιες μελωδίες, μεγαλεπήβολες και δυναμικές κιθάρες με άρτια εκτελεσμένα και κοφτερά riffs και εκρηκτικά σόλο. Μία σκοτεινή, πολύχρωμη μουσική supernova.
To άλμπουμ ανοίγει με το Antaresian, το οποίο κεντρίζει το ενδιαφέρον, με post-black ρυθμούς και μελωδική black ατμόσφαιρα, με drums που σταδιακά γίνονται όλο και πιο επιθετικά οδηγώντας στη κορύφωση και σε ένα πολύ όμορφο και μελαγχολικό σόλο. Το Luminous Accretion είναι ένα κομμάτι με πολλές ρυθμικές αλλαγές, cresendo και staccato, με tech/prog στοιχεία και με τα drums να κλέβουν την παράσταση δίνοντας μας μελωδικό, σκοτεινό doomsday συναίσθημα
Για εμένα το top track του άλμπουμ είναι το Terra Requiem. Ένα χαμηλού tempo κομμάτι, με πενθηρά doom τύμπανα, μία κατά τη γνώμη υπέροχη lead guitar, με tremolo που τα νιώθεις στη ψυχή σου και που σε προετοιμάζουν για αυτό που ακολουθεί, είτε αυτό είναι ένα υπερβατικό σόλο είτε δυνατά riffs, που με synth ήχους μετατρέπουν έναν σκοτεινό ουρανό σε ένα γεμάτο αστέρια γαλαξία.
Υπάρχουν βέβαια αρκετές επαναλήψεις μουσικών φράσεων μέσα στο άλμπουμ, που σίγουρα έχουν την θέση τους στην ιστορία που μας λέει ο Jacob μέσω της μουσικής του. Σίγουρα κάθε τέτοια επανάληψη οδηγεί κάπου και τελικά αξίζει τον κόπο, αλλά σε κάποια κομμάτια ίσως και να κουράσει λίγο. Σε καμία περίπτωση αυτό δεν είναι κάποιο στοιχείο που υποβιβάζει το άλμπουμ, αφού μιλάμε για ένα πολύ όμορφο άλμπουμ, το οποίο αξίζει να βρίσκεται στη δισκοθήκη σας και με το παραπάνω.

Solar Paroxysm is the title of the cosmic themed, atmospheric black metal album, from the band Mare Cognitum, released in March 2021 from I, Voidhanger Records , which was brought to my attention few weeks ago. Mare Cognitum is the one-man-band, of Jason Buczarski, who not only does everything, but as it turns out, he does it very well. Solar Paroxysm is the band’s fifth full-length album.
So what are we going to listen to?
Atmospheric cosmic-black metal, with ethereal, blackgaze but also progressive elements, with some clear doom/death metal influences. The album consists of 5 tracks, which last almost 10 minutes each, building a story that tells us about how humans are destroying our planet, about climate change, but also about how social phenomena like racism, fascism and hatred are the plague of this world. Musically this translates into ethereal yet lush melodies, grandiose and powerful guitars, with well executed and sharp riffs and explosive solos. A dark, yet colorful musical supernova.
The album opens with Antaresian, which sparks the interest, with post-black rhythms and melodic black atmosphere, with drums that gradually become more and more aggressive leading to the climax and a very beautiful and melancholic solo. Luminous Accretion is a track with a lot of rhythmic changes, cresendo and staccato, with tech/prog elements and with the drums stealing the show giving us a melodic, dark doomsday feeling.
For me the top track of the album is “Terra Requiem”. A low tempo track, with punchy doom drums, and in my opinion a great lead guitar, with tremolos that you can feel in your soul and that prepare you for what’s to come, be it a transcendental solo or powerful riffs, that with synth sounds turn a dark sky into a star filled galaxy.
There are of course several repetitions of musical phrases within the album, which certainly have their place in the story Jacob tells us through their music. Certainly each such repetition leads somewhere and is ultimately worthwhile, but on some tracks it might even get a little tedious. In no way is this an element that diminishes the album, as this is a very beautiful album that deserves to be in your discography collection.
