Θα προσπαθήσω πολύ να θέσω τις σκέψεις μου όσο πιο αντικειμενικά γίνεται καθότι δηλώνω μέγας φίλος της μπάντας, μέγας υποστηρικτής μουσικά πάντοτε του κυρίου που ακούει στο όνομα Dave Mustaine, κοινός fanboy που λένε και στο χωριό μου. Δεν είναι πρέπον θεωρώ για εσένα αγαπητέ που διαβάζεις αυτές τις γραμμές, να έχεις μια “βαμμένη” θέση μπροστά σου. Βέβαια, ούτε το να προσπαθήσω να σε πείσω το γιατί το The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead! είναι μια αλμπουμάρα και μισή είναι πρέπον, και δεν πρόκειται φυσικά να μπω σε αυτή την διαδικασία επ ουδενί. Αν δεν σου αρέσουν οι MEGADETH γενικά, δεν νομίζω να ξεκινήσεις να τους γουστάρεις τώρα, στον 16ο δίσκο της καριέρας τους, οπότε αυτόματα αυτό δεν είναι ένα κείμενο που απευθύνεται σε εσένα. Τώρα, αν από την άλλη αγαπάς αυτήν την μπάντα, είτε μέχρι σήμερα, είτε μέχρι κάποιο σημείο της καριέρας της, τότε παρακαλώ, παρέμεινε στην σελίδα. Φώτα σε μένα παρακαλώ, έχουμε και λέμε.
Το The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead! συνεχίζει από εκεί που σταμάτησε το καταπληκτικό Dystopia και κατά την γνώμη μου είναι ένα απειροελάχιστο “κλικ” κάτω, συνολικά και μόνο συνολικά. Αυτή η φοβερή χημεία του θείου Dave με τον Kiko Loureiro που εκτόξευσε την προηγούμενη κυκλοφορία της μπάντας και που “μύρισε” χρυσές εποχές συνήπαρξης του μάστορα με τον Marty Friedman, εδώ πλέον ρέει προς πάσα κατεύθυνση έχοντας ωριμάσει και μεστώσει. Θεός φυλάξει δηλαδή, γιατί κιθαριστικά ο δίσκος δεν αστειεύεται καθόλου. Το επίπεδο αυτού του τομέα έχει χτυπήσει ταβάνι ξανά, αν δεν το έχει τρυπήσει κιόλας. Το πόσο σημαντικός και πλούσιος μουσικός και κατ επέκταση κιθαρίστας είναι ο Kiko είναι αδιαμφισβήτητο, δεν χρειάζεται εγώ να το τονίσω, σκέψου τώρα λοιπόν που έχει πλέον ενταχθεί πλήρως στο κλίμα, έχει βρει τα πατήματα του με το “αφεντικό” και απλά αφήνει την μαγεία των χεριών του να κάνει αυτό που ξέρει καλύτερα. Πέρα από τα αστεία τώρα, το δέσιμο και η χημεία αυτών των δύο τεράτων αυτή την φορά προκαλεί δέος. Δεύτερη εφηβεία περνώ και μην με ξυπνάτε, δεν υπερβάλλω καθόλου λέγοντας πως ο αέρας της χρυσής τριλογίας Rust/Countdown/Youthanasia είναι παντού.
Κακά τα ψέματα, πολλές μπάντες έχουν κάνει αρκετά στραβοπατήματα και αστοχίες μέσα στην μακρόχρονη πορεία τους. Οι MEGADETH δεν είναι μία από αυτές τις μπάντες. Στο ένα χέρι τις μετράς αυτές τις αστοχίες τους. Τα τελευταία 12 χρόνια δε, παρά πάνω θα έλεγα αλλά ας μην το τραβήξω το σχοινί, οι “σφαλιάρες” είναι η μία πίσω από την άλλη σε ένα σερί που θα ζήλευαν και οι καλύτεροι. Επίσης, ας αφήσουμε τις τρίχες, φωνή μπορεί να μην είχε ποτέ, σε πολλά πράγματα να αποτελεί, ας το πούμε ευγενικά, αντιπαθητικό και γραφικό τύπο, αλλά το αστείρευτο ταλέντο αυτού του ανθρώπου να γράφει κομμάτια και δε riff είναι εξωφρενικό. Το The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead! είναι ο ορισμός του metal riffing. Δηλαδή κάπου λίγο λες δεν γίνεται. Και ξέρετε που είναι το αστείο της υπόθεσης; Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις είναι τόσο “απλή” η συνταγή που καταντάει γελοίο. Έχει καταφέρει να συγκεντρώσει ήχους, μνήμες, αισθητική, και ουσιαστικά riff από την προαναφερθείσα τριλογία, από το Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying, από την “μανιέρα” και τακτική του Endgame, μέχρι και από το The System Has Failed. Και οι ποικιλία από riff στο κάθε κομμάτι, οι αλλαγές στην μέση του πουθενά, πόσα χρόνια είχαμε να ακούσουμε κάτι τέτοιο; Και όλος ο δίσκος σε μόνιμο εκτροχιασμό στο θέμα ταχύτητας, όλα πατημένα.
Δεν μπορώ να μπω στην διαδικασία να ξεχωρίσω κομμάτια, δεν ωφελεί, δεν μου φτάνει ο χώρος και θα καταντήσω να φλυαρώ, αν δεν το κάνω ήδη. Όλα τα μέχρι τώρα single είναι εκπληκτικά, ναι και αυτό με τον Ice Tea είναι εξαιρετικό, τι εννοείς δεν σου άρεσε; Το riff, ΤΟ RIFF, του μπάσου το άκουσες μετά την μέση; The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead, Dogs Of Chernobyl, Sacrifice, Celebutante, κύριοι δεν γίνονται αυτά έτσι απλά. Έχει καταλάβει καλά ότι ο χρόνος τελειώνει ο μάστορας, όπως και άλλοι πολλοί, αλλά ξέρετε ποια είναι η διαφορά; Δεν επαναπαύεται, “σκυλιάζει” και το πατάει ένα βήμα παρακάτω το έργο στα γεράματα καταφέρνοντας να βγάζει μερικούς από τους καλύτερους δίσκους της καριέρας του και αυτό χαίρει εκτίμησης και σεβασμού. Στα υπόλοιπα, παίζει ο Steve Di Giorgio μπάσο, στους MEGADETH, πλάκα μας κάνουν, τι άλλο υπάρχει να πούμε δηλαδή;
Μίλησα για ένα κλικ κάτω από το Dystopia στο σύνολο. Η μόνη διαφορά είναι ότι ετούτο εδώ έχει περισσότερα κομμάτια, με τρομερή επιθετικότητα μεν αλλά ο προκάτοχός του σαν συνολική κυκλοφορία έχαιρε μεγαλύτερης ποικιλίας. Δεν γίνονται αυτά πάντως. Ανέφερα ότι είμαι fanboy και βαμμένος MEGADETH–ακιάς;

I will try very hard to develop my thoughts as objectively as possible, since I am a great fan of the band, a great supporter of the gentleman who goes by the name of Dave Mustaine as far as the music aspect goes, commonly, a fanboy. I don’t think it’s appropriate, dear reader, to have to read a non objective opinion. Of course, on the other hand, I won’t even try to convince you why The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead! is a great album. If you don’t like MEGADETH in general, I don’t think you’ll start now, on their 16th album, so automatically this isn’t a review for you. Now, if on the other hand you love this band, either to this day, or to some point in their career, then please, stay on the page. Lights on me please, let’s get it from the top.
The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead! picks up where the amazing Dystopia left off and in my opinion is a notch down from it, overall. That awesome chemistry of “Uncle” Dave with Kiko Loureiro that highlighted the band’s previous release and that had a flavor from the golden times of Daves coexistence with Marty Friedman, here now flows in all directions having been matured. In other words, God help us, because guitar-wise the album is not joking at all. The level of guitar playing is over the top. How important , extraordinary musician and guitarist Kiko is, is undeniable, I don’t need to emphasize on that, so imagine now in this album, that he has now fully integrated his style and playing in the band, has found his strong points with the “boss” and simply leaves the magic of his hands free to do what he knows best. Really, the bonding and chemistry of these two monsters this time around is awe-inspiring. I’m going through my second “golden age” and don’t wake me up from this dream. I’m not exaggerating at all when I say that the vibe of the golden Rust/Countdown/Youthanasia trilogy is everywhere in the album.
Let’s be honest, lots of bands have made many missteps and bad choices music wise in their long careers. MEGADETH is not one of those bands. You can count their “failures” on the fingers of one hand. In the last 12 years, I would say more but let’s not overdo it, the “what the hell” factor is coming one after the other in a streak that even the best would be jealous of. Also, let’s cut the shit, he may never have had a good voice, in many things he is, let’s put it politely, an obnoxious and graphic guy, but this man’s endless talent for writing songs and riffs is outrageous. The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead! is the definition of metal riffing. To the point where you find it not possible. And you know what’s funny? In many cases the recipe is so “simple” that it becomes ridiculous. He has managed to collect sounds, memories, aesthetics, and essentially riffs from the aforementioned trilogy, Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying, Endgame and even from The System Has Failed. And the variety of riffs in each track, the changes in the middle of nowhere, man, how many years have it been since we heard something like this? And the whole album is like a freight train, speed wise.
I can’t try to choose or mention specific tracks from the album, it’s no use, I don’t have enough lines for something like that and I’ll end up babbling if not already. All the singles that came out so far are amazing, yes the one with Ice Tea is great too, what do you mean you didn’t like it? Did you hear the riff, THE RIFF, of the bass after the middle of the song? The Sick, The Dying…And The Dead, Dogs Of Chernobyl, Sacrifice, Celebutante, gentlemen, songs like that don’t just write themselves. He has well understood, Dave i mean, that time is running out, as well as many others his age, but do you know what the difference is between them? He doesn’t rest, he is “pissed” and takes the whole damn thing one step further, the old rascal , managing to release some of the best records of his career and this deserves at least our respect. In other issues, Steve Di Giorgio plays bass in this one, in MEGADETH, you’re joking right? What else is there to say after that?
I mentioned that the new album is a notch down from Dystopia.The only difference is that this one has more tracks with tremendous aggression in one hand, but its predecessor as an overall release had more variety. Holy shit has a whole new meaning with those guys. Did I mention I’m a MEGADETH fanboy?
