Οι NE OBLIVISCARIS χρειάζονται ελάχιστες συστάσεις. Δημιουργήθηκαν στην Αυστραλία και κυκλοφόρησαν την πρώτη ολοκληρωμένη δισκογραφική τους δουλειά, Portal of I, το 2012. Μέσα σε μια δεκαετία μας χάρισαν 4 εξαιρετικά δουλεμένα albums, το τελευταίο εκ των οποίων κυκλοφόρησε στις 24 Μαρτίου του 2023 από την Season Mist, και ακούει στο όνομα Exul.
Το Exul αποτελείται από 6 κομμάτια, συνολικής διάρκειας 52 λεπτών, χορεύοντας σε progressive, μελωδικούς death/black αλλά και κλασσικούς, ambient και jazz ρυθμούς. Με το Exul οι NE OBLIVISCARIS καταφέρνουν να διατηρήσουν τον ήχο που τους κάνει να ξεχωρίζουν με διαφορά, από τις υπόλοιπες μπάντες του είδους.
Το άλμπουμ ανοίγει με το Equus, το μεγαλύτερο κομμάτι του Exul (12΄), το οποίο είναι αφιερωμένο στις ζωές που χάθηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια των θανατηφόρων πυρκαγιών που έπληξαν την Αυστραλία το 2019-2020. Μία μεγαλοπρεπής σύνθεση, με τα σκληρά φωνητικά του Xenoyr και τα καθαρά φωνητικά του Tim Charles να σε μεταφέρουν από την έξαρση στη χαλαρότητα σε χρόνο μηδέν.
Το Equus προετοιμάζει το έδαφος για τα Misericorde I – As The Flesh Falls και Misericorde – Anatomy of Quiescence. Το πρώτο μέρος του Misericorde είναι ευθύ και βαρύ, με έντονες και παραμορφωμένες κιθάρες, ξεσηκωτικές μπασογραμμές κι ένα οδυνηρό σόλο βιολιού, ενώ το δεύτερο μέρος είναι ένας ατελείωτος χορός συναισθημάτων. Το βιολί και η βιόλα δημιουργούν μία νοσταλγική διάθεση, το επαναλαμβανόμενο κιθαριστικό riff είναι ενοχλητικό και σου δημιουργεί μία ανεξήγητη αγωνία και οι τραχείς κραυγές μαζί με τα “γυμνά” καθαρά φωνητικά δημιουργούν μία σπαρακτική διφωνία. Το Misericorde, όπως οι ίδιοι οι NE OBLIVISCARIS δήλωσαν, είναι ένα τραγούδι που καταπιάνεται με το θέμα της αντιμετώπισης και της εσωτερικής μάχης, τόσο σωματικής όσο και ψυχικής, της ανίατης ασθένειας .
Τα έγχορδα στο Exul είναι πανέμορφα με ακουστικές κιθάρες, βιολί, βιόλα και τσέλο να δημιουργούν μελαγχολικά ιντερλούδια και την ηλεκτρική κιθάρα να σφυροκοπάει μια ελκυστικά χαοτική και βάρβαρη ατμόσφαιρα. Πολύπλοκες μπασογραμμές, εκρηκτικά drums και απόκοσμα όμορφες φωνητικές διφωνίες, με την παραγωγή και την ποιότητα του Exul να βρίσκονται σε εξαιρετικά επίπεδα. Όλα τα στοιχεία είναι πρωταγωνιστές στο Exul, όταν ακριβώς πρέπει και η ισορροπία αυτή το κάνει ξεχωριστό, αφού όσο ντελικάτο και εύθραυστο είναι, άλλο τόσο χαοτικό και βάρβαρο μπορεί να γίνει.
Το να γράφεις 12λεπτα τραγούδια ίσως να μην είναι δύσκολο, αλλά το να γράφεις 12λεπτα τραγούδια που να είναι καθηλωτικά και ενδιαφέροντα είναι. Το Exul σε παίρνει αγκαλιά από την πρώτη του νότα, άλλοτε σε χαϊδεύει και άλλοτε σε σφίγγει τόσο πολύ που σου κόβει την ανάσα. Δεν έχεις παρά να το βάλεις να παίζει και να το αφήσεις να ξεθάψει ότι συναίσθημα υπάρχει βαθιά θαμμένο στα έγκατα της ψυχής σου…Και κάπως έτσι η μαγεία των NE OBLIVISCARIS συνεχίζεται.

NE OBLIVISCARIS need very little introduction. They were formed in Australia and released their first full length album, Portal of I, in 2012. Within a decade they have given us 4 extremely well crafted albums, the last of which was released on March 24, 2023 by Season Mist, and goes by the name Exul.
Exul consists of 6 tracks, with a total duration of 52 minutes, dancing in progressive, melodic death – black but also classical, ambient and jazz moods. With Exul, NE OBLIVISCARIS manage to maintain the sound that makes them stand out from the rest of the bands of the genre.
The album opens with Equus, Exul’s longest track (12′), which is dedicated to the lives lost during the deadly wildfires that hit Australia in 2019-2020. A majestic composition, with Xenoyr’s hard-hitting vocals and Tim Charles’ clean vocals taking you from frenetic rush to relaxation in no time.
Equus sets the stage for Misericorde I – As The Flesh Falls and Misericorde – Anatomy of Quiescence. The first part of Misericorde is straight and heavy, with intense and distorted guitars, rousing bass lines and a piercing violin solo, while the second part is an endless dance of emotions. The violin and viola create a nostalgic mood, the repetitive guitar riff is attractively disturbing and creates an inexplicable anxiety and the harsh screams together with the “naked” clean vocals create a heartbreaking harmony. Misericorde, as NE OBLIVISCARIS themselves stated, is a song that delves into the subject of dealing with, and the inner battle, both physical and mental, of terminal illness .
The strings on Exul are gorgeous with acoustic guitars, violin, viola and cello creating melancholic interludes and the electric guitar pounding out an appealingly chaotic and brutal atmosphere. Complex bass lines, explosive drums and eerily beautiful vocal harmonies, with Exul’s production and quality being at excellent levels. All elements are protagonists in Exul, when they need to be, and this balance makes it special, because as delicate and fragile as it is, it can be just as chaotic and brutal.
Writing 12-minute songs might not be difficult, but writing 12-minute songs that are compelling and intriguing is. Exul takes you in its arms from the first note, sometimes caressing you and sometimes squeezing you so hard it takes your breath away. All you have to do is put it on and let it unbury whatever emotion is buried deep in the depths of your soul…Αnd just like that, the magic of NE OBLIVISCARIS continues.
