Κοίτα καμιά φορά πως έρχονται τα πράγματα και πως από το πουθενά δημιουργούνται τέτοιες συγκυρίες που αναπόφευκτα αφήνουν ή ανοίγουν κεφάλαια για συζήτηση με καλή παρέα και άφθονη μπύρα.
Στις 14 Απριλίου, μεγάλη Παρασκευή για εμάς, έχουμε την κυκλοφορία του νέου δίσκου των METALLICA. Έχουμε όμως και ακόμα μία thrash κυκλοφορία, αυτή του 20ου δίσκου των OVERKILL. Και εδώ λοιπόν η σύγκριση είναι αναπόφευκτη, η συγκυρία αυτή, που αν είχα ποτέ λόγο δεν θα την άφηνα να παιχτεί, αυτόματα θέτει για εμένα προσωπικά ένα κάποιο ποιοτικό ή ένα who did it better ερώτημα.
Ας δούμε όμως λίγο μερικά βασικά πράγματα πρώτα. Thrash metal δίσκος, προαπαιτούμενα, standards που πρέπει να καλυφθούν για μία τέτοια κυκλοφορία. Λυσσαλέα κιθαριστικά riff, τσεκ. Γρήγορα, επιθετικά και in your face τύμπανα, τσεκ. Φωνητικά πρώτης γραμμής επίθεσης, τσεκ. Τεράστια ποσότητα ενέργειας από μεριάς συγκροτήματος, συνθέσεων και κατ επέκταση συνόλου δίσκου, τσεκ. Συμπαγές παραγωγή, τσεκ. Αν προσθέσεις και σε όλα τα παραπάνω το ότι έχουμε να κάνουμε με τον 20ο δίσκο ενός συγκροτήματος που δεν έχει σταματήσει να κυκλοφορεί άκρως αξιόλογες δουλειές κάθε 2 ή 3 χρόνια από το 1988 και αποτελείται από ανθρώπους 60 ετών και άνω αυτό το “τσεκ” υπερδιπλασιάζεται.
Με απλά λόγια, το Scorched αποτελείται από 50 λεπτά ατόφιου και ποιοτικού thrash, άλλοτε άκρως επιθετικού και άλλοτε πιο mid tempo αλλά εξίσου ισάξιου νεύρου. Συνολικά 10 υπερπλούσιων από κιθαριστικής άποψης κομματιών και καταιγισμό από riff. Ένα θηρίο πίσω από τα τύμπανα καθώς και έναν 63ων ετών Blitz τρομακτικής απόδοσης και νεύρου. Νομίζω πως η λέξη που περικλείει το συνολικό vibe του Scorched είναι η λέξη Λύσσα. Δίψα, ακόμα, παρά τα χρόνια, παρά την όποια πιθανή ηλικιακή ωρίμανση, παρά την όποια οικονομική εξασφάλιση, η δίψα και η οργή δίνει ακόμα βροντερό παρών. Γνήσιο ανόθευτο thrash, old αλλά και new school με μη προσποιητή, original δύναμη και “τούπα φρούπα”, ε να το είπα, τόση ώρα με το γάντι, γάνιασα.
Δεν ξανά βγαίνουν τέτοιοι άνθρωποι, δεν ξανά επαναλαμβάνεται αυτή η γενιά και κατά συνέπεια αυτή η άπιαστη μουσικά εποχή. Κάποιοι εξακολουθούν και το κάνουν ακόμα αυτό με την ίδια δίψα και πιστότητα. Το Scorched είναι ένα τέτοιου είδους album και οι OVERKILL αδιαμφισβήτητα μια τέτοια μπάντα. Όλα τα βασικά “τσεκ” μιας τέτοιας κατηγορίας είναι εκεί, το συνθετικό γούστο είναι που καθορίζει το πόσο πιο πάνω η κάτω θα κυμανθεί στα αυτιά του εκάστοτε ακροατή. Μακάρι τα ίδια λόγια να μπορέσουν να γραφτούν και για το αντίπαλο δέος και κυκλοφορία της 14ης Απριλίου. Δύσκολο αλλά μακάρι.

Well, look at how sometimes things happen and how out of nowhere such circumstances arise that, inevitably, leave or open certain things for discussion with good company and plenty of beer.
On April 14th, a big Friday as we call it, we have the release of METALLICA‘s new album. But we also have another thrash release, that of the 20th album of OVERKILL. So the comparison here is inevitable, this coincidence, which if I ever had a saying to that matter I wouldn’t let it be played like that, automatically poses for me personally a certain qualitative or a “who did it better” question.
But let’s look at some basics first. Thrash metal album, prerequisites, standards that must be met for such a release. Raging guitar riffs, check. Fast, aggressive and in your face drums, check. Frontline vocals of pure attack, check. Huge amount of energy from the band’s side, compositions and by extension the whole album, check. Solid production, check. If you add to all of the above the fact that we are dealing with the 20th album of a band that hasn’t stopped releasing highly remarkable works every 2 or 3 years since 1988 and consists of people 60 years old and more, this “check” more than doubles.
Simply put, Scorched consists of 50 minutes of solid and quality thrash, sometimes highly aggressive and sometimes more mid tempo but equally nerve-driven. A total of 10 super rich tracks from a guitar point of view and a barrage of riffs. A beast behind the drums as well as a 63 year old Blitz of terrifying performance and nerve. I think the word that encapsulates the overall vibe of Scorched is the word Lyssa. Thirst, still, despite the years, despite any possible age maturation, despite any financial security, the thirst and rage is still a thunderous presence. Genuine unadulterated thrash, old but also new school with unpretentious and original power.
Never again do such people rise again, never again is this generation and consequently this musically elusive era repeated. Some people are still doing this with the same thirst and fidelity. Scorched is such an album and OVERKILL is undeniably such a band. All the basic “checks” of such a category are there, it’s the compositional taste that determines how much higher or lower it will fluctuate in the ears of each listener. Hopefully the same words can be written about the April 14th rival awe and release. Difficult but I wish.
