Εντάξει, γενικά αργώ λίγο στα πάρτι, αλλά αξίζει την αναμονή αφού μιλάμε για τους πολύ αγαπημένους μας PLAYGROUNDED.
Οι PLAYGROUNDED είναι μία 5μελής progressive metal μπάντα, με έδρα της την Αθήνα και το Ρότερνταμ, αποτελούμενη από τον τραγουδιστή Σταύρο Μαρκώνη, τον κιθαρίστα Μιχάλη Κοτσιράκη, τον μπασίστα Οδυσσέα Ζαφειρίου, τον ντράμερ Γιώργο Πουλιάση και τον Ορέστη Ζαφειρίου στα keyboards/synth/sampling. Το πρώτο δείγμα της ιδιαίτερα όμορφης μουσικής τους μας το έδωσαν το 2014 μέσω του Athens. Όμως η μουσική των PLAYGROUNDED έκανε την καρδιά μου να σκιρτήσει πρώτη φόρα πριν 4 χρόνια όταν ανακάλυψα το υπέροχο In Time with Gravity, την δεύτερη δισκογραφική τους δουλειά που κυκλοφόρησε το 2017.
Το The Death of Death, είναι το τελευταίο άλμπουμ των PLAYGROUNDED, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε στις 18 Μαρτίου από την Pelagic Records, και είναι 40 λεπτά απολαυστικής μουσικής εξερεύνησης από το φως στο σκοτάδι και από το σκοτάδι στο φως, μία αντίθεση που κάνει τη διαφορά.
Με βαρύ και αργό ατμοσφαιρικό post-metal συνδυασμένο με προοδευτικούς και ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους οι PLAYGROUNDED καταφέρνουν να σε κρατήσουν στο κέντρο του συναισθηματικού τους πυρήνα. Το ανήσυχο τέμπο καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του άλμπουμ καταφέρνει να σε μαγνητίσει αφού δημιουργεί συνεχώς την αίσθηση πως κάτι θα ακολουθήσει, με το μουσικό μυστήριο να ξεδιπλώνεται γύρω σου και να σε αγκαλιάζει σαν ξωτικό του οποίου η ταυτότητα σου είναι άγνωστη. Σε μελαγχολεί, σε ζεσταίνει, σε αγχώνει, σε σφίγγει αλλά πάντα σε λυτρώνει.
Σκοτεινά ηλεκτρονικά ηχοτοπία, κιθάρα ώριμη με βαριά riffs έτοιμη να διαλύσει κάθε αίσθηση μουσικής γαλήνης, δραματικά και αυστηρά τύμπανα και ένα ατελείωτα απολαυστικό μπάσο που παίζει καθοριστικό ρόλο. Και όλα αυτά πολύ έξυπνα ισορροπημένα με την ερμηνεία του Σταύρου Μαρκώνη, ο οποίος άλλοτε με ανατριχιαστικούς ψιθύρους και άλλοτε με μία μοναδικά καταπραϋντική ένταση καταφέρνει να σε κρατάει ακίνητο στο κέντρο αυτής της μελωδικής συναισθηματικής έκρηξης που προκαλεί το The Death of Death.
Το The Death of Death μπορεί να είναι μικρό σε διάρκεια αλλά είναι πολύ μεγάλο στην ουσία του. Είναι το είδος του άλμπουμ που ανθίζει όλο και περισσότερο με την κάθε ακρόαση. Είναι εθιστικά μελαγχολικό και λυτρωτικό, αρκεί να του ανοίξεις την καρδιά σου. Το The Death of Death, ήρθε για να μας δείξει πως οι PLAYGROUNDED έχουν χτίσει και ακολουθούν πιστά το δικό τους μοναδικό μουσικό μονοπάτι, χαρίζοντάς μας μία αψεγάδιαστη δουλειά και ένα μουσικό βάθος που πολλές μπάντες θα ζήλευαν. Δεν έχετε παρά να αφεθείτε στη μαγεία τους.

Okay, I’m generally a bit late to parties, but it’s worth the wait since we’re talking about our very beloved PLAYGROUNDED.
PLAYGROUNDED is a 5-piece progressive metal band, based in Athens and Rotterdam, consisting of vocalist Stavros Markonis, guitarist Michalis Kotsirakis, bassist Odysseus Zafeiriou, drummer Giorgos Pouliasis and Orestis Zafeiriou on synth/sampling. They gave us the first sample of their particularly beautiful music in 2014 through Athens. But PLAYGROUNDED‘s music first made my heart skip a beat 4 years ago, when I discovered the wonderful In Time with Gravity, their second album released in 2017. The Death of Death, PLAYGROUNDED‘s latest album, released on March 18th via Pelagic Records, is 40 minutes of a delightful musical exploration. 40 minutes that are both light and darkness at the same time, a contrast that makes all the difference.
With heavy and slow atmospheric post-metal combined with progressive and electronic sounds, PLAYGROUNDED manages to keep you in the center of their emotional core. The restless tempo throughout the album manages to captivate you as it constantly creates the feeling that something will follow, with the musical mystery unfolding around you and embracing you like an elf whose identity is unknown to you. It saddens you, warms you up, makes you anxious, grasps you, but always redeems you.
Dark electronic soundscapes, mature guitar with heavy riffs ready to shatter any sense of calm, dramatic and austere drums and an endlessly enjoyable bass that plays a decisive role, all paint the beauty of this album equally well. But all this would not be so magically balanced without the performance of Stavros Markoni, who sometimes with creepy whispers and other times with a uniquely soothing intensity manages to keep you still in the center of this emotional explosion that The Death of Death creates.
The Death of Death may be short in length but it is very long in its essence. It’s the kind of album that blooms more and more with each listen. It’s addictively melancholic and redemptive if only you open your heart to it. The Death of Death, is here to show us that PLAYGROUNDED have built and are faithfully following their own unique musical path, giving us a flawless body of work and a musical depth that many bands would envy. All you have to do is indulge in their magic.
