Οι Primordial μας συστήθηκαν στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’90 ως μια κυρίως black metal μπάντα, η οποία ανέπτυξε τον δικό της μοναδικό ήχο σταδιακά, συνδυάζοντάς τον με την κέλτικη folk και την όμορφη ιρλανδική κληρονομιά τους. Οι Primordial δεν ακούγονται σαν καμία άλλη μπάντα και έχουν καταφέρει να διατηρήσουν αυτή την ταυτότητα σε όλα τα άλμπουμ τους μέχρι τώρα.
Το How It Ends είναι το δέκατο στούντιο άλμπουμ των Primordial και κυκλοφόρησε στις 29 Σεπτεμβρίου από την Metal Blade Records. Aποτελείται από 10 τραγούδια και η πλήρης διάρκειά του είναι 65 λεπτά. Το ερώτημα είναι αν οι Primordial ακολούθησαν τη γνωστή, και επιτυχημένη μέχρι τώρα, μουσική τους συνταγή ή το How It Ends ανακαλύπτει ξανά τον τροχό; Αλλά από την άλλη χρειάζεται πραγματικά οι Primordial να ανακαλύψουν ξανά τον τροχό;
Φυσικά και η απάντηση και στις δύο ερωτήσεις είναι όχι. Το How It Ends είναι ένα άλμπουμ που αναδεικνύει το πάθος που εξακολουθούν να διαθέτουν οι Primordial όσον αφορά τη σύνθεση των τραγουδιών τους, τη μουσικότητα και την απόδοσή τους. Στιχουργικά οι Primordial περιστρέφονται γύρω από την Ιρλανδική επανάσταση, με τους στίχους να είναι εμπνευσμένοι από τον Ιρλανδό ποιητή Joseph Mary Plunkett, ο οποίος εκτελέστηκε λόγω της συμμετοχής του στην Πασχαλινή Εξέγερση. Τραγούδια όπως το We Shall Not Serve και το Pilgrimage to the World’s End εμπνέονται από τη δύσκολη θέση των Ιρλανδών κατάδικων και από επανταστάτες όπως ο Ned Kelly.
Οι Primordial τραγουδούν για την ιστορία τους, αναμειγνύοντάς την όμορφα με τη μεγαλειώδη, καταιγιστική και υμνοπρεπή μουσική τους, απεικονίζοντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο αυτόν τον μοναδικό ήχο που έχουν δημιουργήσει και τελειοποιήσει κατά τη διάρκεια αυτών των 35 χρόνων της καριέρας τους. Το How It Ends είναι ένα μείγμα παραδοσιακής κέλτικης ψυχής, σπαρακτικών μελωδιών και αδιαμφισβήτητα όμορφου στοιχειωμένου blackened metal. Θέλουμε οι Primordial να ανακαλύψουν ξανά τον τροχό; Όχι, εγώ προσωπικά τουλάχιστον δεν το θέλω. Χάρηκα πολύ που άκουσα ένα How It Ends που γιορτάζει τους Primordial που έχουμε αγαπήσει όλα αυτά τα χρόνια, μια μπάντα που ξέρει πώς να δημιουργεί αυτό το μοναδικό μουσικό μείγμα μέσα από το οποίο τιμά την ιστορία και την κληρονομιά της.
Το How It Ends είναι ένα όμορφα θλιμμένο άλμπουμ μέσα από το οποίο οι Primordial συνεχίζουν να λάμπουν το ζεστό και όμορφο φως τους σε όλους εμάς που τους αγαπήσαμε και θα συνεχίσουμε να τους αγαπάμε.

Primordial were introduced to us at the end of 90s as a, primarily, black metal band, which developed their own unique sound album by album, blending it with Celtic folk and their beautiful Irish heritage. Primordial do not sound like any other band, that is one thing we know for sure, and they have been able to maintain their identity through all their albums so far.
How It Ends is Primordial’s tenth studio album and it was released on 29th of September by Metal Blade Records. How It Ends consists of 10 songs and its full duration is 65 minutes. The question i0,s did Primordial follow their known and successful until now music formula, or does How It Ends reinvent the wheel? And again, do Primordial really need to reinvent the wheel? And the answer to both questions is no. How It Ends is an album which highlights the passion that Primordial still possess when it comes to their song writing, their musicianship and their performance.
Lyrically Primordial revolve around the Irish revolution, with lyrics being inspired by the Irish poet Joseph Mary Plunkett, who was executed due to his involvement in the Easter Uprising. Songs like We Shall Not Serve and Pilgrimage to the World’s End are inspired by the predicament of Irish convicts and revolutionaries like Ned Kelly.
Primordial sing about history, blended beautifully with their majestic, pounding and hymn-like music, illustrating that way this unique sound that they have been creating and perfecting during these 35 years of their career. In my ears, at least, Primordial sound as fresh as they did in A Journey’s End with the evolution and their own unique forged sound being on full display in How It Ends.
How It Ends is a blend of traditional Celtic soul, heart-breaking melodies and unapologetically beautifully haunting blackened metal. Do we want Primordial to reinvent the wheel? No, personally I do not. I was very happy to hear a How It Ends that celebrates the Primordial we have loved through the years, a band who knows how to create this unique music blend through which they honour their history and their heritage.
How It Ends is a beautifully sad album through which Primordial keep shining their warm and beautiful light to all of us who have loved them and will continue to do so.
