Θαύματα, για τα θαύματα θα μιλήσουμε σήμερα αγαπητοί φίλοι. Αυτά τα μικρά, πιθανότατα ασήμαντα θαύματα για κάποιους, που συμβαίνουν όταν δεν το περιμένεις. Όταν έχεις απογοητευτεί ίσως, όταν έχεις αποδεχτεί το σήμερα και ο νους σου αδιόρθωτα επιστρέφει σε μέρες παλαιότερες. Αυτά τα μικρά θαύματα είναι που σε αυτές τις συνθήκες κάνουν την εβδομάδα σου, τον μήνα σου, αν όχι το χρόνο σου λίγο καλύτερο. Αυτό φυσικά εφόσον η μουσική έχει την δύναμη να πράξει τέτοια θαύματα για εσένα.
Ένα τέτοιο μικρό θαύμα είναι το Towers Of Gold των SACRED OUTCRY πραγματικά. Μία τόσο αναζωογονητική κυκλοφορία και album για όλους όσους συνήθιζαν να ταξιδεύουν και να χάνονται στα concept και album του power metal της δεκαετίας του 90. Ναι, πραγματικά, τέτοιο χρώμα φέρει, τέτοιες ξεχασμένες μυρωδιές κουβαλάει, τόσο γνώριμες και συνάμα τόσο μακρινές. Δεν παίζεται έτσι πλέον το power metal, πολλά χρόνια τώρα έχει πάψει να είναι τόσο πλούσιο, τόσο αφηγηματικό, τόσο παραμυθένιο. Και να που γίνονται τέτοια μικρά θαύματα εν έτη 2023 και αντιλαμβάνεσαι πόσο λείπουν τέτοιες μπάντες και τέτοιοι δίσκοι.
Η δουλειά που έχει γίνει στο Towers Of Gold είναι αξιοθαύμαστη. Ένας concept δίσκος με όλη την σημασία της λέξης, με όλο το βάρος που έφερε αυτή η έννοια παλαιότερα και που έχει σε κάποιο βαθμό ξεφτίσει στις μέρες μας. Ένας δίσκος με αρχή, μέση και τέλος, που σε παίρνει από το χέρι και σε ταξιδεύει πραγματικά τόσο στην θάλασσα όσο και στην ατελείωτη ερημιά της ιστορίας. Και τι ιστορίας, σαν αυτές που αγαπήσαμε στους Savatage, στους Blind Guardian, με τραγικούς ήρωες σε αναζητήσεις, σε τόπους και μέρη μαγικά. Μία ιστορία που πάει χέρι με χέρι, σελίδα με σελίδα για να είμαι πιο ακριβείς, με κάθε κομμάτι του δίσκου, εξελίσσεται από την αφήγηση στην ενορχήστρωση.
Και μιας που ήρθα στην ενορχήστρωση. Κάθε κομμάτι και ένα single, από το πιο απλό και λιτό, στην μπαλάντα, στο πιο γρήγορο και επιθετικό, στο πιο ατμοσφαιρικό, μέχρι και το 15λεπτο ομότιτλο κομμάτι του δίσκου θα το έκανα single, τόσο καλό και σημαντικό είναι. Κάθε κομμάτι με πιο δουλεμένα riff , θέματα και μελωδίες, μελωδίες όμως ρε να πάρει. Το ίδιο σημαντικές με αυτές της φωνής που είναι εθιστικές, γνώριμες ενώ δεν έχεις ξανά ακούσει ποτέ τον δίσκο. Οι συνθέσεις αυτές καθεαυτές είναι τόσο εξαιρετικά και υπερβολικά καλές όσο και η τρομακτική φωνή που της ερμηνεύει. Απίστευτο εύρος φωνής, απίστευτη ερμηνευτική ικανότητα, ένα μικρό θαύμα και αυτή από μόνη της, θησαυρός για κάθε μπάντα που θέλει να λέει πως “ανίκει” μουσικά στον χώρο του heavy/power. Το Towers Of Gold είναι όλα στον υπερθετικό βαθμό υψωμένα στον υπερθετικό βαθμό. Η ιστορία του δίσκου δεν είναι η πιο πρωτότυπη, αλλά είναι τόσο όμορφα δοσμένη που δεν σε αφήνει να φύγεις χωρίς να τελειώσεις την ανάγνωση, κάτι που αντίστοιχα συμβαίνει και με τα 10 κομμάτια/μέρη του δίσκου.
Αψεγάδιαστο album από όπου και να προσπαθήσεις να το πιάσεις. Δεν βρίσκω κανένα απολύτως ψεγάδι πραγματικά. Κάτι που δεν μπορώ να πω ότι συμβαίνει συχνά, βασικά δεν συμβαίνει σχεδόν ποτέ. Ακόμα και η παραγωγή είναι εξαίρετη και τα γραφιστικά μαγευτικά, ικανά να σε βάλουν να ψάχνεις και να ταξιδεύεις για ώρα μέσα στην λεπτομερότητα τους. Αν είχε βγει την εποχή από την οποία αντλεί έμπνευση και ζωή θα μιλούσαμε για δίσκο σταθμό και η μπάντα θα περνούσε στην λίστα με τα συγκροτήματα που χάραξαν το όνομα τους και συνυφάστηκαν αδιάρρηκτα με την σκηνή. Δεν έχω λόγια.

Miracles, that’s what we’re going to talk about today, dear friends. Those small, probably insignificant miracles for some, that happen when you least expect it. When you’ve been disappointed perhaps, when you’ve accepted today and your mind incorrigibly returns to days of yore. It is these little miracles that in these circumstances make your week, your month, if not your year a little better. That is of course if music has the power to do such miracles for you.
One such small miracle is SACRED OUTCRY‘s Towers Of Gold indeed. Such a refreshing release and album for all those who used to travel and get lost in the power metal concepts and albums of the 90s. Yes, really, such colour it carries, such forgotten scent it brings, so familiar and yet so distant. This is not how power metal is played anymore, for many years now it has ceased to be so rich, so narrative, so storytelling. And here are such small miracles in the year 2023 and you realize how much we miss such bands and such albums.
The work that has been done on Towers Of Gold is admirable. A concept album in every sense of the word, with all the weight that this concept used to carry in the past and which has to some extent faded away nowadays. An album with a beginning, middle and end, that takes you by the hand and really takes you on a journey both to the sea and to the endless wilderness of the concept’s story. And what story, like the ones we loved in SAVATAGE, in BLIND GUARDIAN, with tragic heroes on quests, in magical places and lands. A story that goes hand in hand, page by page to be more precise, with each track on the album, evolving from narrative to instrumentation.
And while I’m on the subject of orchestration. Every track and single, from the simplest and simplest, to the ballad, to the fastest and most aggressive, to the most atmospheric, to the 15-minute title track on the album, I would make it a single, it’s that good and important. Each track with more worked riffs , themes and melodies, melodies dammit. Just as important as the vocal ones that are addictive, familiar while you’ve never heard the album before. The compositions themselves are as exceptional and over the top as the unbelievable voice that performs them. Incredible vocal range, incredible performance ability, a minor miracle and he in himself is a treasure for any band that wants to say they “dare” musically in the heavy/power realm. Towers Of Gold is all elevated to the superlative degree. The story of the album isn’t the most original, but it’s so beautifully told that it doesn’t let you leave without finishing reading it, which is similarly the case with the 10 tracks/parts of the album.
Flawless album no matter where you try to catch it. I can’t find any flaws at all really. Which I can’t say happens often, in fact it hardly ever does. Even the production is superb and the artwork is mesmerizing, able to make you search and travel for hours in its detail. If it had come out in the era from which it draws inspiration and life, we’d be talking about a landmark album and the band would be on the list of bands that made their name and became inextricably intertwined with the scene. Speechless.
