Ο καιρός γυρίσματα έχει λένε, και να που πέφτουμε πάνω σε θέμα που είχαμε αναπτύξει κοντά ένα χρόνο πριν. Τότε αφορούσε την προσωπική δουλειά του Udo, μία δουλειά αφιερωμένη και αυτή στα αγαπημένα ακούσματα του συμπαθέστατου αυτού γερόλυκου, τώρα έχουμε το ίδιο ακριβώς σενάριο, αλλά ενός συνόλου γερόλυκων.
SAXON λοιπόν και More Inspirations ή αλλιώς, το δεύτερο μέρος της προπέρσινης κυκλοφορίας τους. Το βασικό ερώτημα παραμένει, έχουμε ανάγκη ακόμα έναν δίσκο αφιερωμένο σε διασκευές; Ρητορική ερώτηση καθαρά, μιας και η απάντηση είναι σαφέστατα όχι. Τον έχουν ανάγκη οι SAXON έναν τέτοιο δίσκο; Θα τολμήσω να πω πως και σε αυτό η απάντηση είναι όχι. Δεν θέλω να σκεφτώ να βάλω στο παιχνίδι το καθαρά οικονομικό στοιχείο μιας κυκλοφορίας, πραγματικά, δεν θέλω να σκέφτομαι έτσι για συγκροτήματα, το εκτόπισμα των οποίων καθώς και την ποιότητα τους, τα οποία αποδεικνύουν με κάθε τους νέα δουλειά πέραν πάσης αμφιβολίας. Δεν έχουν ανάγκη νομίζω “καπνού” τέτοια ιερά τέρατα, ειδικά μετά από τόσο βεβαρημένο αριθμό κυκλοφοριών και ανοδική πορεία παρόλα τα 40 και χρόνια παρουσίας τους. Σκεπτόμενος παράλληλα πως και ο καινούργιος τους δίσκος είναι ήδη έτοιμος και σαφέστατα πιο κερδοφόρος σαν κυκλοφορία.
Οπότε θα αρκεστώ στο “για την φάση” vibe του θέματος και μόνο. Και πράγματι έχει την φάση του το όλο θέμα. Στο συν ένα του όλου εγχειρήματος θα προσθέσω τις επιλογές αυτές καθεαυτές. Το More Inspirations δεν περιέχει τις αναμενόμενες επιλογές κομματιών που συναντάμε σε κάθε τέτοια κυκλοφορία. Ανάθεμα, ούτε τις μπάντες, θα προσθέσω. Πότε είναι η τελευταία φορά που άκουσες διασκευή σε THE ANIMALS; Καλά για CREAM ούτε λόγος. Να κάτι τέτοια κάνουν και την βγάζουν καθαρή. Κάτι ακόμα που είναι άξιο αναφοράς είναι το πόσο κοντά μένουν στις αρχικές εκτελέσεις, κάτι που πάντοτε έκαναν μιας και δεν είναι ξένοι στο χωράφι αυτό. Προσοχή, δεν είναι επανεκτελέσεις, αλλά δεν είναι και αυτό που λέμε total re-invention. Όλα με τον χαρακτήρα τόσο τον δικό τους, όσο και των SAXON, όμορφα και ομογενοποιημένα. Κάποια με περισσότερο ενδιαφέρον και αλατοπίπερο, άλλα λιγότερο εύστοχα. Και κοίτα που το πιο γνωστό κομμάτι από όλα, το Man On The Silver Mountain, αποτελεί και το λιγότερο ενδιαφέρον του δίσκου. Σε πλήρη αντίθεση με το The Faith Healer των THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND (των ποιών; σοβαρά τώρα;) που ακούγεται εντελώς και απόλυτα δική τους σύνθεση.
Υπό την δική μου λογική, αυτή είναι μια κυκλοφορία τύπου να μαθαίνουν οι λιγότερο ψαγμένοι και γνώστες και να θυμούνται οι παλιοί. Γιατί όντως προσφέρει πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες μουσικές αναφορές, όπως το From The Inside του ALICE COOPER ή το Razamanaz των NAZARETH. Πέρα από αυτό, φυσικά και η κυκλοφορία αυτή απευθύνεται καθαρά σε φανατικούς φίλους των SAXON. Το σίγουρο πάντως είναι ότι είτε φίλος της μπάντας είτε όχι, η ακρόαση του More Inspirations είναι διασκεδαστική και ευχάριστη.

They say time repeats itself, and here we come upon a topic we Discussed nearly a year ago. Back then it was about Udo’s personal work, a work also dedicated to the favourite songs and artists of this old guard rocker, now we have the exact same scenario but of a set of old guard rockers.
So SAXON and More Inspirations, or in other words, the second part of their 2021 release. The main question remains, do we need another album dedicated to covers? A clearly rhetorical question, since the answer is clearly no. Do SAXON need such an album? I would venture to say that the answer to that too is no. I don’t want to think about putting the purely financial aspect of a release into play, really, I don’t want to think that way about bands whose stature as well as their quality, is proven with every new work beyond a shadow of a doubt. I don’t think that such sacred monsters need to “smokescreen”, especially after such an overwhelming number of releases and an upward trajectory despite their 40 plus years of existence. Thinking at the same time that their new album is ready and waiting, clearly a more profitable move as a release.
So I’ll settle for the “for the fun of it” vibe of it all. And indeed, it does have that fun vibe. I’ll add the track selection themselves on the plus side of the release. More Inspirations doesn’t contain the expected track selections that you find on every similar release. Heck, don’t even get me started about the selected bands. When was the last time you heard a cover of THE ANIMALS? Well CREAM is beyond question. That’s something they do and they get away with the whole covers album boring story . Something else worth mentioning is how close they stay to the original versions, something they always did since they are no strangers to this field. Warning, these aren’t re-recordings, but they’re not what we call total re-inventions either. All in character both their own andSAXON‘s, beautiful and homogenized. Some with more interest and salt and pepper in them, others less interesting. And who would guess,the most famous track of all, Man On The Silver Mountain, is the least interesting song of the album. In stark contrast to The Faith Healer by THE SENSATIONAL ALEX HARVEY BAND (who? seriously?) which sounds completely and utterly as their own composition.
In my mind, this is a release for the less experienced audience of such era and bands to learn and for the old to remember. Because it does offer very interesting musical references, like ALICE COOPER’s From The Inside or NAZARETH’s Razamanaz. Apart from that, of course this release is also purely aimed at SAXON fanatics. One thing is for sure though, whether you’re a fan of the band or not, listening to More Inspirations is fun and enjoyable.
