Πολλά τα χρόνια της δισκογραφικής απουσίας των SCAR SYMMETRY, πολλά όμως και όσα μεσολάβησαν και αποτέλεσαν ανασταλτικό παράγοντα αυτά τα τελευταία 9 χρόνια. Παρόλα αυτά, το πλάνο του συγκροτήματος δεν άλλαξε, πιθανότατα να έγινε και ακόμα καθαρότερο και πιο ολοκληρωμένο. Το concept που ξεκίνησε στο The Singularity: Phase I – Neohumanity συνεχίζεται και εδώ. Μην με ρωτήσετε τι και πως, κάτι με εξωγήινους, δυστοπικά μελλοντικά σενάρια, AI και τεχνοοργανικά ανθρώπινα, και μη, όντα.
Στην ουσία, την οποία και ανάθεμα αν κατάφερα και εγώ να την χωνέψω πριν γράψω αυτές τις γραμμές. Progressive χάος με κάθε έννοια, έτσι θα αποκαλούσα το The Singularity: Phase II – Xenotaph. Απόλυτη σύγκρουση 2 κόσμων, που πολλές φορές θα ομολογήσω πως δεν αντιλαμβάνομαι πλήρως τον λόγω ύπαρξης και των 2 στον δίσκο. Από την μία έχουμε την tech melodic death πλευρά της μπάντας που τα πάει τρομακτικά καλά. Ισοπεδωτικά brutal φωνητικά σε έναν καταιγισμό από blastbeat και άκρως τεχνικό drumming, βαριά και γευστικότατα guitar riff από την μία και από την άλλη ο όρος του prog metal σε υπερθετικό βαθμό, 70s μυρωδικά, με αδιανόητα lead και solos, μελωδιάρες η μία πίσω από την άλλη, καθαρά φωνητικά, ευδιάθετη διάθεση και όλα αυτά πολλές φορές σε περίεργη σύγκρουση και εναλλαγή.
Πραγματικά, είναι τόσο πλήρης και οι δύο όψης του συγκροτήματος που σε μεγάλο βαθμό δεν θα χρειαζόταν να υπάρχει η μία από τις δύο. Το αποτέλεσμα θα ήταν και πάλι εξίσου πλούσιο, γεμάτο και εντυπωσιακό. Για να μην γίνω πιθανόν άδικος, το album είναι τρομακτικά γεμάτο από φοβερές ιδέες, τόσο πλούσιο σε ήχους, περάσματα και γενικά υλικό που είναι αδύνατον να το αφομοιώσεις και να το αντιληφθείς, πόσο μάλλον να το κατανοήσεις, με το πρώτο άκουσμα. Σε μεγάλο βαθμό συνυπάρχουν οι παραπάνω “κόσμοι”, αλλά υπάρχουν πραγματικά στιγμές που οι εναλλαγές τόσο μουσικά όσο και σε διάθεση μέσα στο ίδιο κομμάτι είναι εντελώς αψυχολόγητες και σε πετάνε εκτός “ισορροπίας”.
Πέραν αυτού, μιλάμε για έναν υπερτεχνικό δίσκο,μουσικούς και μουσική του υψηλότερου επιπέδου και ποιότητας, σε πολλά σημεία στο δικό τουλάχιστον μυαλό χτυπάνε οι αγαπητοί MERCENARY σαν αίσθηση, αλλά μακράν πιο τεχνικοί. Δύσκολος δίσκος, με δύσκολη μουσική. Χρειάζεται χρόνο για να χωνέψεις το τι πραγματικά έχουν κάνει οι SCAR SYMMETRY εδώ. Αξίζει όμως πέραν κάθε αμφισβήτησης, καθώς για εμένα προσωπικά το The Singularity: Phase II – Xenotaph αποτελεί την πιο τεχνική και άρτια κυκλοφορία του είδους για φέτος. Ας ελπίσουμε το Phase III να μην αργήσει τόσο.

The years of SCAR SYMMETRY‘s absence from discography are many, but also many are the things that have happened and have been a hindrance during these last 9 years. Nevertheless, the band’s plan has not changed, and probably became even clearer and more complete. The concept that began in The Singularity: Phase I – Neohumanity continues here. Don’t ask me what and how, something with aliens, dystopian future scenarios, AI and techno-organic human, and non-human, beings.
In essence, which I’ll be damned if I managed to comprehend myself before writing these lines. Progressive chaos in every sense of the word, that’s what I would call The Singularity: Phase II – Xenotaph. Absolute collision of 2 worlds, which I will admit many times I don’t fully understand the purpose of existence of both on the album. On the one hand we have the tech melodic death side of the band that does frighteningly well. Incredible brutal vocals in a barrage of blastbeat and highly technical drumming, heavy and tasty guitar riffs on one side and on the other side the term prog metal to an over the top degree, 70’s colors, with unimaginable leads and solos, melodic melodies one after the other, clean vocals, up tempo mood and all this often in a strange collision and alternation.
Indeed, the music is so complete on both sides and “faces”of the band that to a large extent one of the two sides could as well be absent. The result would still be just as rich, full and impressive. Not to be unfair, the album is frighteningly full of great ideas, so rich in sounds, passages and general material that it’s impossible to assimilate and grasp, let alone understand, on first listen. To a great extent the above “worlds” coexist, but there are really moments when the variations both musically and in mood within the same track are completely out of the blue and throw you off “balance”.
Apart from that, we are talking about a super technical album,musicians and music of the highest level and quality, in many parts, at least in my own mind, I can hear the beloved MERCENARY like feel, but by far more technical. A difficult album, with difficult music. It takes time to understand what SCAR SYMMETRY have really done here. But it’s worth it beyond any doubt, as for me personally, The Singularity: Phase II – Xenotaph is the most technical and perfect release of the genre this year. Let’s hope that Phase III won’t be so late.
