Η πορεία τους σταθερά ανοδική, παρότι πλησιάζουν την τρίτη δεκαετία της μουσικής τους παρουσίας. Η αξία τους αδιαμφισβήτητη, χωρίς δόση υπερβολής στα λεγόμενα ή μάλλον στα γεγραμένα μου, από τις καλύτερες μπάντες στον ήχο τους και από τις σπουδαιότερες που έχει αναδείξει η χώρα μας. Θέτουν όρια και νέες κορυφές σε κάθε τους κυκλοφορία, μόνο για να τις σπάσουν και ξεπεράσουν σε κάθε επόμενο βήμα τους. Και πράγματι, τι σπουδαίο κατόρθωμα το να μπορείς να αποτελείς έμπρακτα πρόκληση για τον ίδιο σου τον εαυτό έπειτα από έντεκα studio album.
Ξεπερνώντας ακόμα μια φορά τα όρια και δείχνοντας πως ο ουρανός είναι το όριο με την προηγούμενη δισκογραφική τους δουλειά, Codex Omega, το κέντρο βάρους της μπάντας αλλάζει για ακόμα μια φορά δείχνοντας πως υπάρχει ακόμα χώρος για εξερεύνηση και ανάπτυξη των βασικών τους πτυχών και των μαγικών συστατικών που απαρτίζουν την ιδιαίτερη αυτή τους ταυτότητα. Ο πολύ ταλαντούχος υπερβαίνει τον εαυτό του, πάντοτε όμως ελλοχεύει ένας χρονικός ορίζοντας σε αυτό, αργά ή γρήγορα επέρχεται ο κορεσμός. Ο έξυπνος επαναπροσδιορίζει, θέτει νέες βάσεις και παράλληλες κορυφές, μεγαλώνει και εμπλουτίζεται. Αυτό κάνουν και οι SEPTICFLESH ακόμα μια φορά με το Modern Primitive. Μετριάζουν και κατεβάζουν όλη την μεγαλειώδη και πομπώδη ορχηστρική παρουσία των τελευταίων δίσκων ένα σκαλί κάτω, επιτρέποντας στην ρυθμική και κιθαριστική τους ταυτότητα να λάμψει ξανά στο επίκεντρο βγάζοντας ταυτόχρονα την πιο οργανική τους σχέση και δυναμική. Κάτι που βάζει μέσα στο σύνολο τον Kerim “Krimh” Lechner όσο ποτέ. Τρανό παράδειγμα τούτου, το Psychohistory. Όχι πως ο δίσκος υστερεί φυσικά ορχηστρικών σημείων, υιοθετεί απλά έναν περισσότερο συνοδευτικό ρόλο εδώ.
Τολμώ να πω πως το Modern Primitive αποτελεί ίσως την πιο ισορροπημένη τους κυκλοφορία μέχρι σήμερα, συγκεντρώνοντας πιο αρμονικά από ποτέ άλλοτε στοιχεία από όλη την μέχρι τώρα πορεία τους. Όλα αυτά τα καίρια υλικά μέσα από όλες τους τις εκφάνσεις, τα οποία και σμίλεψαν την ταυτότητα τους. Κιθαριστικές μελωδίες που ταξιδεύουν πίσω μέχρι και το A Fallen Temple, φωνητικές αναφορές περιόδου Revolution DNA από τον Σωτήρη Βαγενά, έντονη παρουσία εποχής “Sumerian Daemons” στις κιθάρες και τα riff, ενώ η συνολική αισθητική του δίσκου, τόσο συνθετικά όσο και σε θέμα διάρκειας παραπέμπει έντονα στο Communion. ‘Εντονα δε παρουσιάζονται και τα πιο φρέσκα στοιχεία που φέρουν συνθέσεις όπως το A Desert Throne που ανοίγουν δρόμους και μονοπάτια προς νέες εξερευνήσεις και που κατά την ταπεινή μου γνώμη δίνουν φρέσκια πνοή. Το Modern Primitive αφήνει μια αρκετά έντονη αίσθηση ανανέωσης, κάτι το οποίο αν ισχύει θα δούμε ακόμα μεγαλύτερα επιτεύγματα. Όλα τα κομμάτια του album είναι ένα ξεχωριστό λυθαράκι, όλα με μια νέα προσθήκη στην μέχρι τώρα ταυτότητα του σχήματος, άλλοτε με περίτεχνα ρυθμικά pattern, άλλοτε με διαφορετικές μέχρι σήμερα φωνητικές κατευθύνσεις και προσεγγίσεις.
Το Modern Primitive αποτελεί ακόμα μια κορυφαία προσθήκη στην μέχρι τώρα δισκογραφία των SEPTICFLESH χωρίς να υστερεί σε τίποτα από τις προηγούμενες κυκλοφορίες της μπάντας. Το έκαναν πάλι το θαύμα τους.

A steady upward leading career, although they are approaching the third decade of their presence in music. Their value is unquestionable, without exaggeration in my sayings or rather in what I write, they are one of the best bands in that sound and one of the most important that our country has to offer. They, by themselves, set new limits and new heights in each of their releases, only to surpass them and overcome them in every next step. And indeed, what a great achievement to be able to be practically a challenge for yourself after eleven studio albums.
Overcoming their own limits once again and showing that the sky’s the limit with their previous record, Codex Omega, the band’s center of gravity swifts once again soundwise, showing that there is still room for exploration and development of their basic elements and of the magical ingredients that make their special identity. The very talented transcends themselfs, but there is always a time restriction lurking in it, sooner or later satiety occurs. The smart redefines, lays new foundations and parallel heights, grows and enriches his sound. This is what SEPTICFLESH is doing once again with Modern Primitive. They bring down all the majestic and pompous orchestral presence of the last records one step down, allowing their rhythmic and guitar identity to shine in the spotlight again, bringing out at the same time their most organic chemistry and dynamics. Something that puts Kerim “Krimh” Lechner “in the band” like never before. A great example of this is Psychohistory. Not that the album lags of course in terms of orchestral arrangements, it just takes on a more accompanying role here.
I dare say that Modern Primitive is perhaps their most balanced release to date, gathering all the elements from their entire course so far more harmoniously than ever before. All these key materials through all their manifestations throughout the years, which sculpted their identity. Guitar melodies that travel back as far as A Fallen Temple, vocal references of the Revolution DNA period by Sotiris Vayenas, strong presence of the Sumerian Daemons era on guitars and riffs, while the overall aesthetics of the album, both in songwriting and in terms of duration refers strongly to Communion album. ‘Even the freshest elements which come with compositions like A Desert Throne are strongly presented and are opening roads and paths to explore and in my humble opinion give a fresh take to the band. Modern Primitive leaves a very strong sense of renewal, something which if it turns out to be true, will see even greater achievements. All the album tracks are a founding stone on their own, all with a new addition to the band’s identity, sometimes with elaborate rhythmic patterns, sometimes with different vocal directions and approaches to date.
Modern Primitive is another top addition to the SEPTICFLESH discography so far without lacking in any way compared to any of the band’s previous releases. They did their small miracle again.
