Ο λόγος για τους Πολωνούς tech-death metallers REDEMPTOR, οι οποίοι στις 3 Δεκεμβρίου κυκλοφόρησαν το τέταρτο κατά σειρά full length studio album τους, Agonia, από την SelfΜadeGod Records. Το προηγούμενο album των REDEMPTOR, Arthaneum ήταν ένας πολύ επιτυχημένος συνδυασμός ατμοσφαιρικού και τεχνικού death metal και μία εξαιρετική προσθήκη στο είδος.

Το Agonia είναι ένα πυκνό και γεμάτο άλμπουμ που αποτελείται από 9 κομμάτια συνθέτοντας περίπου 45 λεπτά σκοτεινής και μαγνητικής ατμόσφαιρας. Αν το τεχνικό, βαρύ και ατμοσφαιρικό death metal είναι το στοιχείο σου τότε το Agonia είναι για εσένα. Σίγουρα ένα άλμπουμ για εκπαιδευμένα αυτιά, πολύπλοκο και περιπειώδεις, το οποίο δεν βασίζεται μόνο στη βαρύτητα και την ωμότητα του τεχνικού death metal αλλά εξισορροπεί progressive, συμφωνικούς, ακουστικούς αλλά και doom ήχους, με μία διακριτική δόση βιόλας/βιολιού που κάνουν την ατμόσφαιρα ακόμα πιο ενδιαφέρουσα και μαγική.

Κιθάρες που σε καθηλώνουν και σίγουρα καθοδηγούν την διάθεση του άλμπουμ με τους Daniel Kelser και Hubert Więcek να μας δίνουν εξαιρετικού βάθους κιθαριστικούς ήχους, άλλωτε mellow και άλλωτε ισοπεδωτικούς. Τα φωνητικά του Michał Xaay Loranc, (γνωστού και από τη δουλειά του με τους BEHEMOTH, NECROPHAGIST, NILE, ABYSMAL TORMENT κ.α.) κυμαίνονται μεταξύ growling και βαρυτονικού στυλ και η συνολική μουσική εμπειρία είναι όσο τεχνική όσο πρέπει, χωρίς κανένα ίχνος αλαζονείας ή showing off τεχνικών μουσικών ικανοτήτων.

Το Agonia είναι αυτό ακριβώς αυτό που λέει και το όνομά του, μία ολοκληρωτική αίσθηση μελωδικής αγωνίας. Σκοτεινό, συννεφιασμένο, βαρύ και ευαίσθητο. Ένα άλμπουμ που σίγουρα απαιτεί αρκετές ακροάσεις έτσι ώστε οι REDEMPTORνα σου αποκαλύψουν τον ποικιλόμορφο και σαγηνευτικό μουσικό τους χαρακτήρα. Ένα έξυπνα δομημένο album που σίγουρα δε γίνεται να περάσει απαρατήρητο και που αξίζει την προσοχή σου.

There’s almost less than a month left for 2021 to end and another album lands in the plethora of very high quality albums that this year has given us. Polish tech-death metallers REDEMPTOR, who on December 3 released their fourth full length studio album, Agonia, via SelfMadeGod Records. REDEMPTOR’s previous album, Arthaneum was a very successful combination of atmospheric and technical death metal and an excellent addition to the genre.

Agonia is a dense and full album with 9 tracks that make up about 45 minutes of dark and magnetic atmosphere. If technical, heavy and atmospheric death metal is your thing then Agonia is for you. But definitely an album for more experienced ears, complex and adventurous, which is not only based on the heaviness and rawness of technical death metal but balances between progressive, symphonic, acoustic and doom sounds, with a subtle dose of viola/violin that make the atmosphere even more interesting and magical.

Guitars that captivate you and definitely guide the mood of the album with Daniel Kelser and Hubert Więcek giving us excellent depth of guitar sounds, sometimes mellow and definitely bulldozing. The vocals of Michał Xaay Loranc, (known for his work with BEHEMOTH, NECROPHAGIST, NILE, ABYSMAL TORMENT etc.) range between growling and baritone styles and the overall musical experience is as technical as it should be, without any hint of arrogance or showing off technical musical skills.

Agonia is exactly what its name implies, a complete sensation of melodic agony. Dark, cloudy, heavy and sensitive. An album that definitely requires several listens so that REDEMPTOR can reveal to you their diverse and captivating musical character. A cleverly structured album that definitely can’t go unnoticed and deserves your attention.

Στο Servant Of Mind οι VOLBEAT κάνουν επαναφορά στα στοιχεία που μας είχαν κάνει να τους ξεχωρίσουμε και κλείνουν το μάτι στους «σκληρούς» οπαδούς τους δηλώνοντας ξανά παρόντες! Θα βρεις μέσα συνθέσεις που θα σου θυμίσουν παλιότερα τραγούδια τους. Θα βρεις πάρα πολλές στιγμές που ο «μπαμπάς» των επιρροών του Michael Pulsen, James Hetfield, θα πλανάται πάνω από τον τρόπο που ερμηνεύει σε σημείο που κάποιος εξωτερικός παρατηρητής θα μπορούσε να αστειευτεί «καμιά φορά ακούγονται περισσότερο METALLICA απ’ τους METALLICA” (Say No More). Σίγουρα υπάρχουν οι στιγμές που θα πεις ο Elvis ζει αλλά και τα πιο punk πατήματα τους. Όμως σε σύνολο μιλάμε για ένα ισσοροπημένο, πολύ καλογραμμένο άλμπουμ, με ελάχιστες αδιάφορες στιγμές, κατά την προσωπική άποψη (Wait A Minute My Girl) και πολλά τραγούδια που εγγυόνται να σπάσουν τα άλατα και του πιο δύσπιστου αυχένα! Η παραγωγή είναι αψεγάδιαστη, η δομή τον τραγουδιών έξυπνη και πιασάρικη, οι κιθάρες ξυράφια και τα τύμπανα καταιγιστικά. Για τη φωνή τι να πούμε; Δεν υπάρχει δεύτερη τέτοια χροιά αυτή τη στιγμή στη σκηνή και ο τρόπος τοποθέτησης και ερμηνείας του Pulsen τουλάχιστον ιδιοφυής.

Οι VOLBEAT είναι μια μπάντα που έχει εντελώς δική της ταυτότητα και μπορεί να σε συγκινήσει ακόμη κι όταν νομίζεις ότι δε σ αρέσουν. Ναι είναι Metal Even Your Mom Would Like όπως έχουν γράψει πάνω σε μπλουζάκι τους αλλά εγώ μέτρησα σε ένα άλμπουμ με 18 τραγούδια συμπεριλαμβανομένων δυο εναλλακτικών εκδόσεων και της απίστευτης διασκευής στο Don’t Tread On Me τουλάχιστον 14 τραγούδια πάνω του καλού και κάποια που μπαίνουν στην ψυχή σου απ’ το πρώτο άκουσμα. Αν δεν είστε εξοικειωμένοι με το συγκρότημα αυτό το εξαιρετικό άλμπουμ είναι μια καλή αρχή και αφορμή για να ψάξετε όλη τη δισκογραφία τους. Λίγο πριν τη λήξη του 2021 οι VOLBEAT τριπλάρουν και μπαίνουν στα 5 καλύτερα άλμπουμ της χρονιάς! Δυναμώστε το!

I received some “friendly fire” from my close circle that I will be subjective when it comes to writing the review for the new VOLBEAT album entitled Servant Of Mind which was released on December 3^rd. I am not going to hide the fact I was really looking forward to the particular release as I am a huge fan of the band. Neither will I hide the fact I had some second thoughts about it since their previous release Rewind Replay Rebound was the “lightest” album of their discography. However, that doesn’t mean that it didn’t include songs that will remain classics and my personal favorites.

In Servant Of Mind, VOLBEAT bring back all the elements that made them stand out in the first place and they give a “salute” to their “heavier” fans by restating their place once more! You will definitely find songs that will remind you of older tracks of theirs. You will find moments when “Papa Het” influences of Michael Pulsen are hovering over the entire song, in the way Michael Pulsen, sings to the extent that an outside observer could make a joke like “sometimes they sound more METALLICA than METALLICA” (Say No More). There are definitely moments when the thought “The king is alive” (VOLBEAT) will cross your mind but also the punk influences they incorporate in their music. As an entity, Servant Of Mind is a well-balanced, very well written album, with very few insignificant moments (Wait A Minute My Girl) and many songs that are guaranteed to break the salts even in the stiffest neck! The production is impeccable, the structure of the songs is smart and catchy, the guitars are sharp like razorblades and the drumming relentless. As for the vocals what can I say? There is no other voice color neither skillful brilliance quite like Pulsen’s in the metal scene today.

VOLBEAT is a band with its entirely own identity and can move you even if you think you don’t like them. Yes they are Metal Even Your Mom Would Like as they write on a tshirt of theirs but in an album of 18 tracks, including two alternate versions and the amazing Don’t Tread On Me cover 14 songs well above good and a few of them capture your soul by the first spin. If you are not familiar with the band, this is an excellent album to start from and discover their discography. Just a little before 2021 is over VOLBEAT with a swift move, and a brilliant release make it to the year’s top 5! Turn it up!

Worship ο τίτλος του εν λόγο άλμπουμ που θα κυκλοφορήσει 26 Νοεμβρίου από την Nuclear Blast. Πιο συγκεκριμένα περιέχονται 11 συνθέσεις με ικανοποιητική διάρκεια ανάμεσα στα κομμάτια. Από τις πρώτες νότες καταλαβαίνει κανείς με το τι έχει να κάνει! Τραχύ, μελωδικό death metal, γεμάτο με δύναμη και ατμόσφαιρα που λίγες μπάντες μπορούν να πετύχουν σε τόσο μεγάλο βαθμό.

Το άλμπουμ ξεκινάει με το ομώνυμο Worship να δίνει το στίγμα για την εξαιρετική συνέχεια. Η παραγωγή άριστη! Μελωδικές κιθάρες αλλά με έντονες κι έξυπνες συνθέσεις που στην πλειοψηφία τους προσδίδουν το κάτι παραπάνω στην συνολική εικόνα του άλμπουμ. Δεμένος ήχος, με μια πιο mid tempo προσέγγιση σε αρκετά σημεία που απογειώνει την οπτική αλλά με την στιχουργική πλευρά να κλέβει την παράσταση μιας και η μπάντα έχει πολλά να πει και να περάσει για την συνολική εικόνα του πλανήτη! Αξίζει πραγματικά τον κόπο να ασχοληθεί κανείς στην ανάλυση των στίχων! Κομμάτια όπως τα Worship, Chemical whore, Dead world, Children Of The Gray, They Will Arrive & Gods Of The Underground είναι δεδομένο πως θα αφήσουν το δικό τους στίγμα στην ιστορία της μπάντας!

Άξιζε και με το παραπάνω η αναμονή για την συγκεκριμένη κυκλοφορία! Οι HYPOCRISY παραδίδουν μαθήματα δημιουργίας και εξέλιξης χωρίς καμία απόκλιση από τις ρίζες τους. Δημιούργησαν ένα “Έπος”, παρακαταθήκη για μπάντες που θέλουν να ακολουθήσουν τα βήματα στον συγκεκριμένο χώρο. Ένα άλμπουμ που δύσκολα θα μείνει έξω από την καλύτερη δεκάδα της χρονιάς!

Truth be told for those of us who grew up listening to extreme metal, have witnessed some musical moments we will never forget. This is one of these moments, as one of the biggest bands of the Swedish death sound, HYPOCRISY, return after 8 years in silence with a release that will, without any second thought be considered the best they’ve released so far. Obvious example of the music genius of Peter Tägtgren, but also the experience and skill of HYPOCRISY, the inspiration has given birth to an excellent result which can be described with no words other than …. EPIC (Absolutely no exaggeration).

Worship will be released on November 26^th through Nuclear Blast Records, and it includes 11 tracks with a balanced duration. As the first notes hit you, you know what’s coming next! Raw, melodic death metal, full of power and thick atmosphere that very few bands can achieve to that extent.

The album begins with the title track Worship setting the tone for the exceptional album that is ahead. The production is impeccable! Melodic guitars but with intense and brilliant synthesis set apart the particular album from the rest. Solid sound, with a more mid-tempo approach in several parts that uprises the outcome, however the lyrics are a fist between the eyes, in a way that they steal the show. You see the band has a lot to say for the entire planet and they serve it… in your face! Even if you’re not the type that notices the lyrics, do it for this release! Songs like Worship, Chemical Whore, Dead World, Children’s Of The Gray, They Will Arrive & Gods Of The Underground are destined to make their mark in the history of the band!

Worship was well worth the wait. Hypocrisy deliver textbook lessons of creativity and evolution with no deviation at all from their roots. The have created an opus, which will become a legacy for the bands that will follow in their footsteps. An album that has most definitely won its place in the top ten of the year!

H εξέλιξη των OBSCURA τα τελευταία 15 χρόνια είναι ασταμάτητη και συναρπαστική και κυμαίνεται σε progressive-tech/death metal αλλά και σε πιο τεχνικά και “βίαια” ακούσματα μέσα από τα δύο τελευταία άλμπουμ τους, Akróasis (2016) και Diluvium (2018). Το A Valediction  είναι το έκτο full-length studio album των Obscura, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε στις 19 Νοεμβρίου 2021, από την Nuclear Blast Records.

Το A Valediction είναι 50 λεπτά γεμάτα άφθονο μουσικό ταλέντο και δυναμισμό. Τα περισσότερα κομμάτια του άλμπουμ είναι σύντομα και συνδυάζουν έντονες τεχνικές εκρήξεις, κάποιες – αλλά όχι τόσες όσες Diluvium progressive τάσεις και μία απίστευτη μελωδικότητα. Οι OBSCURA μας προσφέρουν ένα υπέροχο fusion από μηχανικής ακρίβειας τεχνικό/progressive death metal, χωρίς όμως μακρόχρονες κουραστικές εξερευνήσεις, και από απίστευτα μελωδικό death metal, που σε πάει πίσω σε 90s Gothenburg sound. Και όχι πριν βιαστείς να βγάλεις το συμπέρασμα, οι Obscura δεν θυσίασαν την tech-death ταυτότητά τους, αλλά κατάφεραν πολύ έξυπνα να θολώσουν τα σύνορα μεταξύ tech-death και melo-death. Και το αποτέλεσμα δεν απογοητεύει.

Η έναρξη του A Valediction είναι το επικό Forsaken, ένας ντελικάτος χορός μεταξύ ηλεκτρικής κιθάρας και μπάσο που σύντομα εξελίσσεται σε φλογερά blastbeats πάνω στα οποία γλιστρούν κοφτερά riffs και leads και ανοίγουν τον δρόμο σε ένα πολύ σοβαρό και σαγηνευτικό σόλο. Tα Devoured Usurper, The Neuromancer, The Beyond, A Valediction είναι σίγουρα κάποια από τα κομμάτια που θα ξεχωρίσεις με το πρώτο άκουσμα του άλμπουμ. Το Heritage είναι ο επίλογος του A Valediction και καθρεφτίζει νομίζω ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ; συναρπαστικές ακροβασίες μεταξύ tech-death και melo-death, μία κρυστάλλινη ορχηστρική νιρβάνα μέσα στην οποία ακούς μελωδικά πολυβόλα.

Ένα πολύ έξυπνο και ελκυστικό A Valediction, μέσω του οποίου οι OBSCURA μας προσφέρουν συναρπαστικές μουσικές μηχανικής ακρίβειας και μία ακαταμάχητη μελωδική εμπειρία που πρέπει να ακουστεί παντού.  Ένα άλμπουμ που αναμφίβολα θα απογειώσει τους ήδη έμπειρους και απίστευτα ταλαντούχους μουσικούς που ακούν στο όνομα OBSCURA και που αξίζει μια θέση στη λίστα με τα καλύτερα του 2021.

I have to admit that I was looking forward to listening to OBSCURA‘s new album, A Valediction, not only because OBSCURA have never disappointed us so far, but also because of the new-old line-up. We are of course referring to the return of Christian Münzer on guitar and Jeroen Paul Thesseling on bass and new band member, drummer David Diepold, with Steffen Kummerer (vocals, guitar) remaining of course the solid-rock member of the band.

OBSCURA’s evolution over the last 15 years has been non-stop and exciting, ranging from progressive/death metal to more technical and “violent” sounds through their last two albums, Akróasis (2016) and Diluvium (2018). A Valediction is OBSCURA‘s sixth full-length studio album, released on November 19, 2021, via Nuclear Blast Records.

A Valediction is 50 minutes of abundant musical talent and dynamism. Most of the album’s tracks are short and combine intense technical explosions, some – but not as much as Diluvium’s progressive tendencies and an incredible musicality. Obscura offer us a wonderful fusion of mechanically precise technical/progressive death metal, without long tedious explorations, and incredibly melodic death metal, which takes you back to the 90s Gothenburg sound.  And before you jump into any conclusions, no OBSCURA didn’t sacrifice their tech-death identity, but they very cleverly managed to blur the boundaries between tech-death and melo-death. And the result does not disappoint.

The opening track of A Valediction is the epic Forsaken, a delicate dance between electric guitars and bass that soon evolves into blastbeats over which sharp riffs slide and pave the way for some very serious leads and a captivating solo. Devoured Usurper, The Neuromancer, The Beyond, A Valediction are definitely some of the tracks that will stand out with the first listen of the album. Heritage is the epilogue of A Valediction and I think it mirrors the whole album; exciting acrobatics between tech-death and melo-death, a crystal clear instrumental nirvana in which you hear melodic machine guns.

A very intelligent and engaging A Valediction through which OBSCURA offer us exciting musicianship of mechanical precision and an irresistible melodic experience, which needs to be heard far and wide.  An album that will undoubtedly elevate the already experienced and incredibly talented musicians who listen to the name OBSCURA  and that deserves a place in the Best of 2021 list.

Όταν έσκασε η είδηση της κυκλοφορίας του Moonflowers μαζί με τις ορχηστικές εκδόσεις που έσκαγαν μια κάθε εβδομάδα η αναμονή έγινε βασανιστική. Παρασκευή 19 Νοεμβρίου επιτέλους ολοκληρώνεται η αναμονή και ακούμε ένα ολοκαίνουριο άλμπουμ που δεν ξεφεύγει από τη γνωστή σκοτεινή βελούδινη καταχνιά που χαρακτηρίζει το ατμοσφαιρικό doom των Φινλανδών μόνο που το υλικό τους είναι διανθισμένο από black πινελιές που το κάνουν άκρως ενδιαφέρον!

Με 8 συνθέσεις στο γνώριμο ύφος της μπάντας και εναλλαγή καθαρών και growl φωνητικών το Moonflowers δεν είναι μια κυκλοφορία που μας εκπλήσσει με τις καινοτομίες της όμως έχει μέσα κάποιες στιγμές που θα μας συνοδεύουν για καιρό, όπως το Keep Your Heart Safe From Me, All Hallow’s Grief (feat. OCEANS OF SLUMBER’s Cammie Gilbert) αλλά και το προσωπικό αγαπημένο του άλμπουμ This House Has No Home (feat. Stam1na’s Antti Hyyrynen). Για μένα οι Swallow The Sun ήταν και παραμένουν η νέα γενιά του ατμοσφαιρικού doom που δεν ανεβάζει ταχύτητα αλλά χρησιμοποιεί καθαρά φωνητικά θυμίζοντας το ύφος των KATATONIA. Ωστόσο σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία με το This House Has No Home με κάνουν να αναρωτιέμαι αν κλείνουν το μάτι στο post black metal των HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY. Ο ίδιος ο Raivio δηλώνει σχετικά με τις «πληγές» από τις οποίες προέρχεται αυτή η κυκλοφορία: “Γνωρίζω ότι πιθανότατα δεν θα έπρεπε να το πω αυτό αλλά μισώ βαθιά αυτό το άλμπουμ. Μισώ το που με πηγαίνει και το τι αντιπροσωπεύει για μένα. Εύχομαι να μη το έκανε. Αλλά με όλη του την αλήθεια, δεν έχω καμία επιλογή παρά να το αγαπώ. Αυτό μετράει για μένα στη μουσική έτσι και αλλιώς. Δεν έχει σημασία τι σε κάνει να νιώθεις αρκεί που σε συγκινεί.”

Το εξώφυλλο του Moonflowers είναι φτιαγμένο από αποξηραμένα λουλούδια που είχε μαζέψει ο Raivio και το αίμα του για να βάψει το φεγγάρι. Οπότε που καταλήγουμε; Είναι το Moonflowers ένα από τα άλμπουμ της χρονιάς; Όχι αλλά έχει μέσα του στιγμές που αξίζουν να μείνουν στην playlist σου για χρόνια.

When Swallow The Sun released SWALLOW THE SUN, 20 Years of Gloom Beauty and Despair Live in Helsinki last July we had no idea they already had an album ready with new songs. When the news hit us for the release of Moonflowers along with the orchestral version that were published one each week the wait for November 19^th became quite torturing. So yesterday the wait was finally over and we got to listen to the new album. Moonflowers is an album that doesn’t deviate from the familiar dark, velvety gloominess of the atmospheric doom Finns only this time they have enhanced it with black brushstrokes and have made the final result deeply interesting!

With 8 songs in the familiar sound of the band and the lingering between clean and growling vocals Moonflowers is not the release that will blow your mind with the ground breaking development of the band but is includes songs that will make you listen to over and over for a long time such as Keep Your Heart Safe From Me, All Hallow’s Grief (feat. OCEANS OF SLUMBER’s Cammie Gilbert) and my personal favorite This House Has No Home (feat. Stam1na’s Antti Hyyrynen). For me SWALLOW THE SUN were and remain the new generation of atmospheric doom that doesn’t accelerate the pace, but uses some clean vocals at times reminding the style of KATATONIA. However in this release with songs like This House Has No Home, I can’t help but wonder if they are flirting with the post black metal of HARAKIRI FOR THE SKY. So deep are the wounds from which Moonflowers surfaced that Raivio says about it: “I know well that I should not say this, but I deeply hate this album. I hate where it takes me, how it makes me feel, and what it stands for me. I wish it wouldn’t. But for all its honesty, I got no option than also [to] love it. That is all that matters to me with the music anyway. It doesn’t matter how it makes me feel, as long as it does.”

The artwork of Moonflowers is made of dried flowers Raivio had picked up but also his blood to paint the moon. So where do we stand? Is Moonflowers one of the best albums of the year? Now, but it includes some moments inside it that will be in your playlist for years to come.

Την Κυριακή 24 Οκτωβρίου 2021 μία παρέα 5 Άγγλων, γνωστοί και ως Architects, κατεδάφισαν το Boiler Shop, στο Newcastle upon Tyne της Αγγλίας.  Οι Architects, όταν κυκλοφόρησαν το Nightmares το 2006 σίγουρα δεν περίμεναν πως μετά από λίγα χρόνια το For Those That Wish To Exist θα ήταν στο νούμερο 1 των UK και των AU charts και στο νούμερο 4 των US charts, όπως και οι ίδιοι μας είπαν ευχαριστώντας μας που κάναμε αυτό τόσο ιδιαίτερο άλμπουμ, τόσο μεγάλο.

Οι Architects βγήκαν στη σκηνή υπό τους ήχους του Black Lungs και καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του live, το οποίο διήρκησε περίπου μιάμιση ώρα έπαιξαν τα περισσότερα από τα κομμάτια του τελευταίου τους άλμπουμ For Those That Wish To Exist, αλλά και παλιότερες δημιουργίες τους από τα Holy Hell (2018), All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (2016) και το Gravedigger από το Lost Forever/Lost Together (2014).

Η ενέργεια μέσα στο Boiler Shop χτύπησε κόκκινο. Οι Architects έπαιξαν με την ψυχή τους και εμείς με τη σειρά μας δεν τους απογοητεύσαμε. Η μπάντα έδωσε το 100% της μουσικά, τεχνικά, φωνητικά και φυσικά η επικοινωνία με το κοινό δεν σταμάτησε ούτε λεπτό αφού ο Sam Carter ήταν σχεδόν μονίμως σε απόσταση αναπνοής από το κοινό. Μία από τις πιο δυνατές στιγμές του live ήταν η στιγμή του Doomsday, το τελευταίο κομμάτι πάνω στο οποίο δούλευε ο Tom Searle λίγο πριν πεθάνει το 2016. Ήχος και φώτα on point (τα recording skills μου δεν δικαιώνουν τον ήχο) και το merchandise πλούσιο.

Οι Architects  τη Κυριακή το βράδυ έπεσαν ακριβώς όπως…a Meteor μέσα στις καρδιές μας και μας πλημμύρισαν με την πιο θετική τους ενέργεια και με βαριές, λυτρωτικές και όμορφες μουσικές, αποδεικνύοντας πως δεν είναι μόνο χαρισματικοί στο να γράφουν ωραία μουσική αλλά και απίστευτα καλοί στο να την μοιράζονται. ENGLISH VERSION BELOW

Last Sunday was different. A Sunday, which I was looking forward to with great anticipation. It was to be my first concert in 21 months. I would have the opportunity again after so long to listen, watch and feel the live music experience that I, like many of you, have missed so much, and I think my concert adventures could not have gotten off to a better start.

On Sunday 24th October 2021 a group of 5 Englishmen, also known as Architects, demolished the Boiler Shop, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.  Architects, when they released Nightmares in 2006 certainly didn’t expect that after a few years For Those That Wish To Exist would be number 1 in the UK and AU charts and number 4 in the US charts as they themselves told us, thanking us for making this special album, so big.

Architects took to the stage to the sounds of Black Lungs and throughout the live, which lasted about an hour and a half, they played most of the tracks from their latest album For Those That Wish To Exist that was released in February 2021, as well as earlier songs from Holy Hell (2018), All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us (2016) and Gravedigger from Lost Forever/Lost Together (2014).

The energy inside the Boiler Shop hit red hot. Architects played their hearts out and we, in turn, did not disappoint them. The band gave their 100% musically, technically, vocally and of course the communication with the audience didn’t stop for a minute as Sam Carter was almost permanently within arm’s reach of the audience. One of the most powerful moments of the live was the moment of Doomsday, the last song Tom Searle was working on just before he died in 2016. Sound and lights on point (my recording skills don’t do the sound justice) and the merchandise was extensive.

Architects on Sunday night dropped just like…a Meteor into our hearts and flooded us with their most positive energy and heavy, redemptive and beautiful music, proving that they are not only very gifted at writing great music but also incredibly good at sharing it. Thank you lads!

Χωρίς να επιδίδεται σε κιθαριστικές «ακρότητες» για να κάνει επίδειξη δύναμης δομεί μελωδίες πάνω στην κιθάρα και ακροβατεί ανάμεσα στην τεχνικότητα, το ρόκ, το metal αλλά κυρίως το συναίσθημα. Όλα τα θέματα είναι έτσι φτιαγμένα που δεν απευθύνονται αποκλειστικά σε μουσικούς, αλλά σε όποιον ακούει μουσική. Για εμένα προσωπικά που με κουράζουν τα ορχηστρικά άλμπουμ, το Quantum Leap ήταν μια ευχάριστη εξαίρεση. Ο τρόπος που δομεί τα θέματα ο Gus είναι αφηγηματικός με τέτοιο τρόπο που εξαλείφει την απουσία των στίχων. Πρωταγωνιστής η μελωδία και η τεχνικότητα υποστηρικτής του αποτελέσματος, και όχι κύριος στόχος. Όταν δεν έχεις την ανάγκη να επιδείξεις την ικανότητά σου, αφήνεις όλο το χώρο στη μουσική να γεμίσει το χώρο και να απλωθεί και αυτό είναι διάχυτο ως συναίσθημα στο Quantum Leap .

Εξάρσεις που δείχνουν τον heavy χαρακτήρα του Gus αλλά και περάσματα όπως το Night Driver που μας θυμίζουν κινηματογραφικά σκηνικά και μας κάνουν να θέλαμε να παρακολουθήσουμε ταινία με soundtrack τον guitar hero. Ο ίδιος ο Gus όπως μας αποκάλυψε στη συνέντευξη που μας παραχώρησε (δείτε την ΕΔΩ) δημιούργησε αυτό το άλμπουμ ως δημιουργική διαφυγή την περίοδο της καραντίνας χωρίς καν να έχει τη διάθεση να περιοδεύσει σε υποστήριξη του αλλά για εμάς που το ακούμε είναι σαν να άνοιξε ένα παραθυράκι και να άφησε να δούμε ακριβώς τι συμβαίνει μέσα στο μυαλό και την ψυχή του. Συνοδεύεται από ένα δεύτερο άλμπουμ με ζωντανές ηχογραφήσεις επιλεγμένων εμφανίσεων του συγκροτήματος.

Απολαυστικό και γεμάτο από ιδέες, εναλλαγές και ποιοτικές κιθαριστικές διαδρομές όπως μόνο ο Gus μπορεί να της δημιουργήσει το Quantum Leap είναι η απολαυστικότερη instrumental κυκλοφορία της χρονιάς. Προσωπικά το προτείνω σε δυνατή ένταση κατά τη διάρκεια μιας αγαπημένης διαδρομής χωρίς κυκλοφοριακή συμφόρηση.

Never before has a solo release by Gus G been more personal than Quantum Leap that is set to be released on October 8^th through AFM Records. Gus chooses for the very first time to go fully instrumental and the result is transcending and enchantingly revealing for the virtuoso.

Noble enough to let aside his master skills on the guitar he builds melodies and balances between technicality, rock and metal but most of all emotion.  All themes are written in a way that they reach beyond musicians to whomever listens to music. I personally get extremely tired of instrumental albums and Quantum Leap is a pleasant exception. The way Gus structures the music, sounds as if he is narrating a story in a way that illuminates the absence of lyrics. The star of the album is melody and skill is a firm supporter of the result but not the main goal. When there’s no need to prove your quality as a guitarist, you let space overflow with music and that is the overall feeling throughout Quantum Leap.

There are outbursts showcasing Gus’s heavy background but also moments like Night Driver which bring to mind cinematic pictures and make us want to watch a film with the guitar hero’s soundtrack. Gus himself revealed in the interview he gave Metalradio.gr (interview in Greek HERE) that this album was his creative release during the quarantine of covid-19 era and that he didn’t plan on touring in support of it but for us who listen to it, sounds like he cracked the window to his mind and soul.

Luscious in ideas, diversity and quality guitar paths, in the way only Gus knows how to lead us Quantum Leap is the most indulging instrumental release of the year. Personally, I suggest that you play it loud during your favorite ride on a road with no traffic.

Όντας μεγάλη οπαδός των DREAM THEATRE και μετά από ένα Distance Over Time (2019) και ένα Astonishing (2016) που προσωπικά δεν με συγκίνησαν ιδιαίτερα (σε σύγκριση βέβαια με τα προηγούμενα άλμπουμ των DREAM THEATRE), περίμενα αυτό το άλμπουμ με ανυπομονησία.

Το A View From The Top Of The World αποτελείται από 7 κομμάτια διαφορετικής “αρχιτεκτονικής” και θεματολογίας. Οι DREAM THEATRE μας ταξιδεύουν από το Alien, που εξετάζει τον κόσμο από μία sci-fi οπτική γωνία γλιστρώντας πάνω σε διάφορες χρονικές υπογραφές με χαρακτηριστική άνεση, στο Invisible Monster, ένα πιο δραματικό κομμάτι με mind-bending solos από τον John Petrucci και τον Jordan Rudess, και τον James La Brie να μας τραγουδάει για ένα αόρατο τέρας, το άγχος, δείχνοντας μας για ακόμα μία φορά πόσο δυνατός στιχουργός είναι.  Και εδώ αξίζει να αναφερθεί πως φωνητικά ο James La Brie είναι απλά απολαυστικός καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια του άλμπουμ, χωρίς να προσπαθεί να φτάσει τις οκτάβες που ίσως να έφτανε 30 χρόνια πριν, και hats off γι’αυτό.

Οι John Myung & Mike Mangini μας προσφέρουν στο Answering The Call ότι καλύτερο έχει να προσφέρει το άλμπουμ από ρυθμικής δυναμικής. Φυσικά από το άλμπουμ δε λείπει η λαχταριστή 8χορδη Ernie Ball Music Man Majesty του almighty John Petrucci με riffs που τα νιώθεις στη ψυχή σου. Το άλμπουμ κλείνει με το ομώνυμο A View From The Top Of The World, ένα 20λεπτο κομμάτι, που θα αφήσει τους νέους ακροατές να ψάχνονται και τους παλιούς να βυθίζονται  απολαυστικά στο μουσικό απροσδόκητο.

Είναι το A View From The Top Of The World το καλύτερο άλμπουμ των DREAM THEATRE, όπως πολλοί πιστεύουν; Κατά τη γνώμη μου όχι. Είναι σίγουρα όμως το καλύτερό άλμπουμ τους την τελευταία δεκαετία. Ένα συμπαγές άλμπουμ που εμπερικλείει πολλά σύγχρονα αλλά και τα κλασικά θετικά μουσικά χαρακτηριστικά των DREAM THEATRE. Το A View From The Top Of The World είναι ρευστό αλλά και στοχευμένο, επιδέξιο και ικανό να σε ταξιδέψει από τον μινιμαλισμό στον μαξιμαλισμό εν ριπή οφθαλμού. Ένα μείγμα μουσικής δεξιοτεχνίας και συναισθημάτων το οποίο προσφέρει μία ολοκληρωμένη εμπειρία ακρόασης. Απολαύστε τη θέα!

For fans of progressive metal music the name DREAM THEATRE surely holds a lot of expectations . DREAM THEATRE have a nearly 40-year musical career and A View From The Top Of The World is their 15th studio album, released on October 22nd via InsideOut Music.

Being a huge DREAM THEATRE fan and after the latest two, Distance Over Time (2019) & Astonishing (2016) that didn’t personally move me much (compared to previous DREAM THEATRE albums), I was waiting for this album with great anticipation.

A View From The Top Of The World consists of 7 tracks of different architecture and lyrical focus. DREAM THEATRE take us from the Alien, which looks at the world from a sci-fi perspective, gliding fluently across various time signatures, to the Invisible Monster, a much more dramatic track with mind-bending solos from John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess, and with James La Brie singing about the invisible monster: anxiety, showing us once again what a strong lyricist he is.  And it’s worth mentioning here that vocally James La Brie is simply delightful throughout the album, without trying to reach the octaves he might have been able to reach 30 years ago, and hats off for that.

In Answering The Call, John Myung & Mike Mangini give us on the best the album has to offer in terms of rhythmic dynamics. Of course from the album is not missing the wistful 8-string Ernie Ball Music Man Majesty  with riffs by the almighty John Petrucci, that you can feel in your soul. The album closes with the title track A View From The Top Of The World, a 20 minute track that will leave new listeners digging and old ones delightfully immersed in the musical unexpected.

Is the A View From The Top Of The World Dream Theater’s best album to date, as many believe? In my opinion, no. But it is certainly their best album of the last decade. A solid album that encapsulates many of DREAM THEATRE‘s modern as well as classic music positives. A View From The Top Of The World is fluid yet purposeful, slick and able to take you from music minimalism to maximalism in the blink of an eye. A blend of musical craftsmanship and emotions, which offers a complete listening experience. Enjoy the view!

Στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση οι “Αυστραλοί” melodic prog/death BELAKOR, κατάφεραν να προσεγγίσουν με μεγάλη επιτυχία αυτό το κομμάτι με μια κυκλοφορία που δεν θα περάσει απαρατήρητη. Coherent ονομάζεται το νέο τους άλμπουμ το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε στις 29 Οκτώβρη από την Napalm Records και είναι ίσως ένα πολύ καλό δείγμα για το πώς συνδέεται ο progressive ήχος με την ατμόσφαιρα και τα brutal φωνητικά.

Στα γνωστά πατήματα της μπάντας και αυτό το άλμπουμ αλλά με μία διαφορά! Σε σύγκριση με τους προκατόχους του το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ είναι πολύ πιο σοβαρό και προσεγμένο. Τεχνικό με ιδιαίτερες progressive συνθέσεις, με εκπληκτικές μελωδίες και κιθάρες γεμάτες δυναμισμό, σκοτεινό όπου και όσο χρειάζεται με brutal φωνητικά τυλιγμένο με μια ιδιαίτερη αίσθηση κι ατμόσφαιρα. Riff που προσδίδουν κύρος και ανεβάζουν τον πήχη στις συνθέσεις, κατακλύζουν το άλμπουμ χωρίς να κουράζουν τον ακροατή, ενώ πολύ καλή δουλειά έχει γίνει επίσης σε τύμπανα, μπάσο και φωνητικά! Πρόκειται για την πιο σοβαρή δουλειά της μπάντας έως σήμερα, με πολύ καλούς επίσης στίχους και θεματολογία. Είναι αξιοσημείωτο το γεγονός πως οι κιθάρες δίνουν τον ρυθμό και τον τόνο στο να παραμείνουν οι συνθέσεις ενδιαφέρουσες παρά την μεγάλη τους διάρκεια.

Εάν αναζητείται να ακούσετε μελωδικό death metal με βάθος και progressive goth προσέγγιση, τότε ξεκινήστε με το συγκεκριμένο άλμπουμ. Οι BELAKOR κατάφεραν ως μπάντα να ανέβουν ένα σκαλί πιο ψηλά και δημιούργησαν ένα εξαιρετικό άλμπουμ. Είναι άραγε ικανό να τους εκτοξεύσει ακόμα ψηλότερα; ……η κρίση δική σας.

Turns out that it is rather difficult for a band to play atmospheric music of high quality in a continent away from Europe. In this particular case the Australians melodic prog/death BELAKOR, managed to pull that, difficult task, off with a release that stands out. The new album is entitled Coherent which was released on Oceober 29^th through Napalm Records and it is a rather admirable example of how progressive can be combined with atmospheric influences and brutal vocals.

In the familiar musical paths of the Aussies this album is no different with a twist. Compared to their previous releases this album stands out for the maturity and the strict focus of detail. Technical with peculiar progressive songs, with amazing melodies and guitars driven by power. Dark when it needs to be and in the appropriate amount with brutal vocals, wrapped in e very special mood and essence. Riffs that elevate the band’s status and the quality of the songs, flood the album without becoming tiresome to the listener, while drums are also very intellectually developed, as well as the base and vocals! It’s the most mature work of the band up to date with brilliant lyrics and themes. I feel I need to point out the fact that guitars manage to maintain the listener interested throughout lengthy songs.

If you are looking for in depth melodic death metal with a progressive goth attitude, begin your quest with Coherence. BELAKOR have stepped up and created an excellent album. Is it enough to give them the extra boost to set them off? …… it’s your call.

22 Οκτώβρη και η Out Of Line κυκλοφορεί το καλύτερο άλμπουμ των BLOODRED HOURGLASS μέχρι σήμερα. Μετά την απίστευτη κυκλοφορία του 2019 Godsent, στο Your Highness οι μοντέρνοι Φινλανδοί metalheads πήραν όλα τα στοιχεία που κάνουν μια κυκλοφορία εξαιρετική και τα ανέβασαν ένα σκαλί περισσότερο. Οι στίχοι είναι τόσο ευθείς και παρόντες, αφού μιλούν για τις χαμένες ευκαιρίες στην ζωή και τον έρωτα, που τους κάνει άμεσα εύκολους να ταυτιστείς. Η μουσική ναι μεν είναι αυτό που έχουμε συνηθίσει από τη μπάντα μόνο που έχουν προσθέσει, βάθος, όγκο και ευρηματικότητα. Ιδιοφυείς μελωδίες που διαπερνούν σα μικρές κλωστές τα τραγούδια, χρησιμοποιώντας όλα τα όργανα στο μέγιστο των δυνατοτήτων τους, ακόμη και τη φωνή του Jarko που ακροβατεί ανάμεσα στα καθαρά και τα brutal φωνητικά δημιουργώντας μοναδική ατμόσφαιρα. Η μπάντα δηλώνει ότι αυτό το άλμπουμ μπορεί να αποτελέσει έναυσμα για μη μεταλλάδες να ακούσουν το είδος και θεωρώ ότι έχουν δίκιο. Όχι επειδή οι «μαλάκωσαν» αλλά γιατί χρησιμοποιούν απλές φόρμες για να περάσουν βαριά μηνύματα και σίγουρα «βαριά» μουσική. Μουσική που σε κατακλύζει με συναίσθημα, με τύμπανα που κατεδαφίζουν θεμέλια και κιθάρες που στρώνουν σαν οδοστρωτήρες το δρόμο για να ακουστεί καλύτερα η ιστορία που έχει να διηγηθεί κάθε τραγούδι με τολμηρά riffs και άμεσες μελωδίες. Απόλαυσα ιδιαίτερα τον τρόπο που η μπάντα δεν περιορίστηκε σε μια μορφή έκφρασης και αφομοίωσε στον ήχο της μια πιο ευάλωτη πλευρά. Μάλιστα η επιλογή να δώσουν τον τίτλο Your Highness (Υψηλοτάτη) για να τιμήσουν το θηλυκό στοιχείο και την συνεισφορά του στον κόσμο με αυτό τον τρόπο δείχνει ότι ακούν τον παλμό της κοινωνίας, τις αγωνίες που βιώνει και εκφράζουν την άποψή τους για αυτό.

Συμπέρασμα, το Your Highness είναι ένα εξαιρετικό άλμπουμ από ένα συγκρότημα που πρέπει να ακουστεί παντού ΔΥΝΑΤΑ! Οπότε ανεβάστε ένταση και απολαύστε, θα σας αφήσουν άφωνους.

BLOODRED HOURGLASS are the band that if you haven’t listened to them before, you will never forgive yourself! Fresh, melodic, powerful, current, this band is everything a metal band should sound like in 2021! All that needs to be done, is for enough people to listen to them!

October 22^nd and Out of Line is unleashing to the world the best BLOODRED HOURGLASS album ever. After their amazing release back in 2019 Godsent, in Your Highness the modern metal Finns have taken all the elements that make a great release a step higher. The lyrics are so direct and present as they talk about the lost opportunities in life and love which makes them instantly easy to relate. The music is what we are used to from the band, enhanced in depth, volume and ideas. Brilliant melodies like little ribbons interwinding within the songs, using all instruments to their fullest even Jarko’s voice which lingers between clean and brutal vocals creating a unique atmosphere. The band feels that this release can become the gateway to non-metal listeners, to be introduced to the genre and I feel they are right. Not because they are getting soft, but because they use simple forms to deliver heavy meanings and heavy music. Devastating music that floods you with emotion, with vast drumming and guitars that pave the way of the story each song has to say, with bold riffs and straightforward melodies. I especially enjoyed the way the band set no boundaries into their form of expression and incorporated a more “vulnerable” side into their new album, and I feel that calling the album Your Highness in honor of the female element in the world and her contribution shows they have their ear near the pulse of the society, they picked up the frustrations and they spoke their minds on the matter.

All in all, Your Highness is an exquisite album by a band that needs to be listened to everywhere LOUD! So go on and blast it, it will blow you away!

Εγώ θα έλεγα απλά ότι είναι ένα spiced μείγμα επιρροών που γαργαλάει τα μουσικά μας ερεθίσματα με ένα εντελώς ξεχωριστό τρόπο και σε απάτητα μονοπάτια. Εάν είστε από αυτούς που τους αρέσει να δοκιμάζουν καινούρια ακούσματα θα σας το πρότεινα ανεπιφύλακτα.

22 Οκτώβρη κυκλοφορεί λοιπόν το πολυαναμενόμενο 13o άλμπουμ των Βρετανών blacksters CRADLE OF FILTH με τίτλο Existence Is Futile από τη Nuclear Blast. Δεν πρόκειται για μια κοινή κυκλοφορία, είμαστε μπροστά σε μια εκπληκτική δουλειά που παραθέτει μαθήματα δημιουργίας, εξέλιξης, ποιότητας και αγάπης για τη μουσική δημιουργία. Χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη και χωρίς καμία δόση υπερβολής οι CRADLE OF FILTH δημιούργησαν ένα “Έπος” και αυτή είναι η μόνη λέξη που μπορεί να το προσδιορίσει!

Τραχύ, σκοτεινό, μελωδικό και ιδιαίτερο black metal, με εκπληκτική ατμόσφαιρα, που κυμαίνεται στα γνωστά μονοπάτια της μπάντας αλλά πλέον ένα βήμα μπροστά σε σχέση με τις δυο ήδη εκπληκτικές προηγούμενες κυκλοφορίες των FILTH. Μετά από 30 χρόνια παρουσίας στο χώρο, παραμένουν φρέσκοι και δημιουργικοί,χωρίς να επαναλαμβάνονται ενώ με αυτό το άλμπουμ, δείχνουν το δρόμο για το επίπεδο και την προσέγγιση που πρέπει να έχει κάθε μπάντα αν θέλει να εξελίσσεται και να προχωράει μπροστά.

Συνθετικά, το άλμπουμ περιέχει απίστευτα riff, σε συναίσθημα κι αισθητική, πανέξυπνες συνθέσεις σε heavy προσέγγιση, εκπληκτικά σε μελωδία σόλο, μοναδικά ατμοσφαιρικά σημεία σε κάθε σύνθεση και ταυτόχρονα μοναδικά σε εκτέλεση και δυναμικές τύμπανα, τόσο….όσο χρειάζεται για να κρατάνε το ενδιαφέρον της σύνθεσης ψηλά. Ο Dani Filth, προσθέτει ότι ακριβώς χρειάζεται ένα άλμπουμ με αυτό το εύρος συνθέσεων! Χαρακτήρα και ύφος!

Ένα άλμπουμ πραγματικά που παίζει αβίαστα χωρίς να κουράζει, που σε παρασύρει πιάνοντας σε από το χέρι σε ένα μαγικό κι ατμοσφαιρικό ταξίδι. Μην ψάξετε να διαχωρίσετε κάποιο από τα κομμάτια. Οι CRADLE OF FILTH δημιούργησαν ένα “Έπος” παρακαταθήκη για όσους θέλουν να συνεχίσουν να διευρύνουν τους ορίζοντες και τις επιρροές τους. Ήρθε η ώρα να  δούμε κατάματα το γιατί οι Βρετανοί συγκαταλέγονται στις μεγαλύτερες και πρωτοπόρες μπάντες στον πλανήτη.

Sometimes it’s hard to grasp the entire depth of a band if you haven’t followed it’s creative course over the years. The quality of the songwriting is definitely the one factor that sets apart the band from the rest but also determines its evolution within the its genre.

October 22^nd is the date for the long-anticipated 13^th album of the British blacksters CRADLE OF FILTH entitled Existence Is Futile on Nuclear Blast Records. It’s nothing but a common release, we have in our hands a magnificent album that shows us how it’s done, in terms of creativity, evolution, quality and love for musical creation. Without a second thought and without a speck of exaggeration, CRADLE OF FILTH have created an OPUS and this is the only word that can be used to fully describe Existence Is Futile!

Rough, dark, melodic and peculiar black metal with an immaculate mood which is within the familiar style of the band but also moves a step forward compared to their two previous amazing releases. After 30 years of existence, the band remains fresh and creative, without repeating itself, and paves the way for other artists as far as the standards and the creative approach that a band ought to have in order to evolve and move forward.

In terms of songwriting, the album illustrates amazing riffs, with emotion and aesthetics, clever songs with a heavy approach, immaculate melodic solos, unique atmospheric parts in every song and at the same time, skillful in performance and devastating drumming, in just the right proportion in order to keep the songs intriguing. Dani Filth, adds exactly what an album of that magnitude requires! Character and attitude!

Existence Is Futile is a release that flows with no speck of a tiring effect, which takes you by the hand and leads you in a magical and atmospheric journey. Don’t be fooled and try to find a favorite song within this album. CRADLE OF FILTH have created an “Opus” that will become a milestone, for those who wish to keep widening their musical spectrum and their influences. It’s time we face the fact that the Brits are among the greatest, most influential bands on the planet..

Δεν ξέρω από που να ξεκινήσω! Aπό τα μανιώδη riffing, τα λυσσαλέα drums, τα σόλο στις κιθάρες που σε οδηγούν πότε σε νοσταλγία Iron Maiden; Τhrash και metalcore δεμένα με υποδειγματικό τρόπο ώστε να τιμούν τις ρίζες του ήχου αλλά να το οδηγούν στο μέλλον. Ποτέ πριν επικά θέματα δεν έχουν ακουστεί τόσο φρέσκα και σύγχρονο. Με τραγούδια όπως το Like A Sword Of Damocles, A Crisis Or Revelation και The Shadow Of Abattoir (Iron Maiden σου θυμίζει) η μπάντα πάει τον μοντέρνο ήχο σε νέα επίπεδα. Μακριά από την προηγούμενη δισκογραφική τους δουλειά που ήταν ήδη καλή φαίνεται να ξαναβγαίνουν μπροστά με λυσσαλέα δίψα και δύναμη. Τα φωνητικά του Heafy με τον τέλεια ισορροπημένο ακροβατισμό ανάμεσα στα καθαρά και brutal, ένα από τα αδιαμφισβήτητα assets του ήχου του συγκροτήματος. Παραγωγή βαριά και ογκώδης, με τεράστια τύμπανα και σωστά ζυγισμένη ώστε να κολακεύονται οι μελωδίες και τα σόλο στις κιθάρες.

Θυμάμαι χαρακτηριστικά ότι το review για το What The Dead Men Say το έγραψα γιατί ήταν γεμάτο καλά τραγούδια! Τολμώ να γράφω ότι το in The Court Of The Dragon το ξεπερνά σε ποιότητα και βάθος συνθέσεων. Σε αυτό το άλμπουμ οι Trivium εμπλουτίζουν τον ήχο τους και δεν ακούς αυτό που περίμενες από αυτούς αλλά πολυεπιππεδες συνθέσεις με ιδέες και θέματα που όπως λέμε «δεν τους το ‘χες». Οπότε κάντε στον εαυτό σας μια χάρη και ρίξτε ένα αυτί και μετά ξανασκεφτείτε το πως αυτή η μπάντα πρέπει να σνομπάρεται….

Without a doubt, Trivium, along with Ghost & Volbeat, are among the bands who are bullied for not being, as true metal as they should be, from the fans of the classic sound. However, Trivium with their new release, In The Court Of The Dragon are the ones who make you shut your mouth and deliver one of the best mainstream metal albums of the year if not the best.

I really don’t know where to begin! From the furious riffing, the devastating drumming, the inspired solos on the guitars which drive you in a nostalgic journey to Iron Maiden’s sound (To Tame A Land – The Shadow Of The Abattoir)? Thrash and metalcore entwined together in a charismatic way, complimenting their roots but also driving the scene’s sound into the future. With songs like Like A Sword Of Damocles, A Crisis Or Revelation και The Shadow Of Abattoir, the band leads the modern sound into new levels. Way beyond their previous release which was a great release, it looks like they are out with an unstoppable hunger and strength. Heafy’s voice, with the perfectly balanced choreography between clean and brutal vocals, remains definitely an asset for the band. The production is vast, heavy, unbreakable, with huge drums, well balanced in order to compliment and showcase the melodies and the great guitar solos.

I still remember when I was writing the review for What The Dead Men Say that the reason I did write it, was because of the quality of the songs. Dare I write that, The Court Of The Dragon surpasses in quality and depth their previous release. In this release Trivium enhance their style and they play like you didn’t expect them to play. Songs are multilayered, with ideas and themes that “catch you by surprise”. So do yourselves a favor and listen, I am positive you’ll think again before bullying them again….

Ιδιαίτερα riff σε ένα μοναδικό “Carcass Style” που ακόμα και να έχεις σταματήσει για χρόνια να ακολουθείς την μπάντα θα φωνάξεις με έκπληξη!! “Yeah!! Carcass is back!!!” Η εκπληκτική δουλειά στις κιθάρες από τον μοναδικό Bill Steer (γνωστό για την προσφορά του στην Metal σκηνή όχι μόνο από τους Carcass αλλά και από τους Napalm Death & Angel Witch) και τον Tom Drapper κάνει την αισθητική του άλμπουμ να ξεχωρίζει.

Χαρακτηριστικά solo parts εναρμονισμένα μεταξύ τους με αρκετά Blues στοιχεία και νότες δημιουργούν μελωδικά πατήματα για σεμινάριο. Τα φωνητικά θα γυρίσουν αρκετά τις μνήμες σε άλμπουμ όπως τα Swansong & Heartwork κι αυτό γιατί η φωνή του Jeff Walker ακούγεται ακόμα και σήμερα αναλλοίωτη. Τα τύμπανα παρουσιάζουν κι αυτά μια εκπληκτική αισθητική και απλά ολοκληρώνουν την συνολική εικόνα του άλμπουμ! Ένα άλμπουμ με Thrash & Death Metal μονοπάτια που μόνο οι Carcass θα μπορούσαν να δημιουργήσουν με αυτό τον ήχο. Mid tempo σημεία και γρήγορα ξεσπάσματα δεμένα με έναν μοναδικό τρόπο!

Η ουσία είναι πως οι Carcass δεν είναι απλά εδώ για μια κοινή κυκλοφορία! Επέστρεψαν, δημιούργησαν και συνεχίζουν να αποδεικνύουν πως όταν αγαπάς αυτό που κάνεις, η δημιουργία και το αποτέλεσμα είναι απλά θέμα χρόνου!! Ας αφήσουμε τον χρόνο να αποδείξει το μέγεθος αυτής της κυκλοφορίας που θα συζητηθεί για καιρό! Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στην μπάντα για το τελικό αποτέλεσμα.

We are stepping into the last quarter of 2021, and without a doubt it has been a full productive and fruitful year in terms of releases. One of the biggest bands in its genre, but at the same time one of the most legendary ones are the British Carcass from Liverpool, who return with an explosive release, and certainly one of the best of the year! Its title Torn Arteries and it’s being released today, September 17^th through Nuclear Blast.

Peculiar riffs in the unique “Carcass Style” that even if you have stopped following the band for years will make you shout out in surprise! “Yeah!! Carcass is back!!!” The work behind the guitars by the one and only Bill Steer (infamous for his contribution in the metal world not only through his work for Carcass but also Napalm Death & Angel Witch) and Tom Drapper make the aesthetics of the album stand out.

Trade mark solo parts harmonized with many bluesy influences and notes create textbook melodic parts. Vocal lines will make you reminiscent albums like Swansong & Heartwork because Jeff Walker still sounds fresh and untouched by time. Drums also present a unique aesthetic result and complete the magnificent acoustic entity. Torn Arteries creates Thrash & Death Metal roads only Carcass could create with this sound. Mid tempo parts and fast outbursts entwined in a unique way!

Bottom line is Carcass didn’t just put out another release! They are making a comeback, unleashing rich in creativity songs that prove, that when you love what you do, it’s only a matter of time until the next masterpiece! Let’s let time prove the value of this release, cause it’s definitely going to be talked about for quite a while! Let me just say a big thank you to the band for Torn Arteries!

Στιχουργικά έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα concept. Ο ήρωας της ιστορίας ξυπνά μέσα σε ένα post apocalyptic σκηνικό και περιφέρεται μέσα σε αυτό, τόσο ως φυσική παρουσία όσο και ως ψυχική ισορροπία, για να φτάσει μπροστά σε μια μαύρη τρύπα, να πέσει μέσα και να βγει σε μια νέα συνειδητότητα. Μουσικά το Ashes Enthroned είναι σκοτεινό, καταθλιπτικό, συναισθηματικό, απελπισμένο. Τα εκπαιδευμένα μουσικά αυτιά θα προσέξουν ότι αν ανέβαιναν οι μουσικές αξίες σε 16^α θα μιλούσαμε για μια μουσική ταυτότητα πολύ κοντά στους Septic Flesh, ενώ όσον αφορά τις μελωδίες στα φωνητικά θα βρείτε μονοπάτια που θα σας θυμίσουν Type O Negative, Nevermore, Iced Earth & Charon. Συναισθηματικό και θλιμμένο το Ashes Enthroned δείχνει ότι υπάρχει μια πολύ ενδιαφέρουσα προοπτική μέσα στους I Abyssick που αν δεν επέμεναν, με σχεδόν εμμονικό τρόπο, στους αργούς ρυθμούς και άνοιγαν περισσότερο το εύρος, θα έδειχναν όλο το πεδίο της δημιουργικότητάς τους.

Βρείτε τους και αφιερώστε τους μια ακρόαση, πιθανότατα να σας κάνουν να επανέλθετε ξανά και σίγουρα να σας ανοίξουν την όρεξη για την επόμενη κυκλοφορία τους.

Haunting, dark and melodic, the debut album of I Abyssick, Ashes Enthroned that was released on July 2^nd through Sleazy Rider records. The band was formed back in 2017 by the usual, restless, suspect whi can’t help himself from writing music Constantin Maris on guitars and vocals (Forbidden Seed ,Starve the Hydra, Atrocity Pioneer ) and Angelo Seaito on the drums. Later on the same year, they joined forces with Makis Sel on Bass and George Petropoulos on Guitar to complete the lineup of the band.

Lyric wise the album is a concept. Awaken in a totally destroyed world, before a blinding light…brighter than a thousand suns… You are the only witness left and you roam endlessly in the wastelands. A series of events in the past, has led mankind to its fall. Voices in your head, make you think about your mental health, along with strange shadows that keep following you. Standing above a great black hole, you decide to take the leap of faith… …And you wake up again, just to realize that the mind works in mysterious ways in order to protect you from the terrible reality ….

Musically Ashes Enthroned is dark, depressive, emotional and desperate. Musically trained ears will realize that were we to upscale the musical values to 16s we would be talking about a musical identity similar to Septic Flesh while vocal lines remind us of Type O Negative, Nevermore, Iced Earth & Charon. Emotional and sad Ashes Enthroned shows an extremely interesting perspective through I Abyssick. If they weren’t so persistent in their downtempo rhythms and they opened up the spectrum if their creativity they would have demonstrated the full capacity of their skill.

Find them and take the time to listen to them at least once, they will probably convince you to go back and certainly to expect more in their next release.

Ποιοτικό Brutal Grind Death με πολλά core στοιχεία, ελάχιστα στοιχεία doom και φωνητικά που σε αρκετά σημεία θυμίζουν αγγίζουν με επιτυχία Black Metal περάσματα, είναι τα κύρια συστατικά που δημιουργούν την ταυτότητα του συγκεκριμένου άλμπουμ. Απαιτεί περισσότερες από μια ακροάσεις προκειμένου να έχει ο ακροατής πλήρη εικόνα για την αισθητική του. Ένα άλμπουμ με καταιγιστικούς ρυθμούς σε τύμπανα και riffs, με μεγάλη ποιότητα στις συνθέσεις και ιδιαίτερο death metal, στο ύφος που μας έχει συνηθίσει η μπάντα. Σε αυτό το άλμπουμ όμως θα διακρίνετε και αρκετά Black Metal στοιχεία με core επίσης επιρροές, στοιχεία τα οποία δένουν απόλυτα στις συνθέσεις και εκτοξεύουν την συνολική ποιότητα ένα σκαλί παραπάνω! Οι κιθάρες αποτελούν προσόν για την μπάντα και σε σύγκριση με την παραγωγή του άλμπουμ αδιαμφισβήτητα προσδίδουν όγκο, και ηγετική παρουσία!

Πρόκειται για ένα ιδιαίτερα τεχνικό Brutal Grind Death album που οι λάτρεις του είδους θα ξεχωρίσουν. Πέρασαν τρία γεμάτα χρόνια για την επιστροφή των Aborted αλλά η αναμονή άξιζε και με το παραπάνω. Εάν έχετε ως βάση ακούσματα από μπάντες όπως οι “Dying Fetus“, “Death Decline“ κτλ, τότε έχει επιλέξει σωστά! Είναι δεδομένο πως δεν θα σας απογοητεύσει το αποτέλεσμα και η συνολική εικόνα.

It is literally difficult to sustain a powerful name in the metal scene while remaining one of the most eligible and interesting bands in the extreme metal genre. One of the most talked about bands within the metal fans is releasing its 11^th studio album, entitled “Maniacult”. The time is here for the new release of the Belgians Aborted out September 10^th on Century Media which offers the following message loud and clear: “Some bands just can’t escape their roots!”

High quality Brutal Grind Death with many core elements, a few doom touches and vocals that in some parts remind us (in a very attractive way) Black Metal shades, are the main ingredients that compile the identity of this album. This is a release that requires more than one listen in order to comprehend the aesthetics. An album with devastating drumming and riffs, high standard quality in the synthesis and extra ordinary death metal, in the vein of the trademark sound of the band. However in this album you can trace, quite a few Black Metal elements and many core influences. Elements that entwine ideally with the music and elevated the level of the final result a step higher! Guitars are a huge plus for the band which in comparison to the production of the album, they offer volume and hold the leading part!

We have in our hands a particularly technical Brutal Grind Death album, fans of the genre will favor. It’s been three full years for Aborted to come back, but it was more than worth the wait. If you enjoy listening to bands such as “Dying Fetus”, “Death Decline” etc, then you have chosen right! It is certain that it will not disappoint you!

“Aborted” have created an album that will fire up experimentation and creativity for other bands, as well, to go a step further and make a difference. Don’t miss it out! Listen loud!

Arte concert has uploaded the live set of our own Suicidal Angels. The Greek thrashers demolished the stage and the lucky audience in Alcatraz Festival had the chance to mosh with them.

Πρόκειται για ένα ιδιαίτερο άλμπουμ με πολύ καλές συνθέσεις και εξαιρετικές κιθάρες, πιασάρικα riff αλλά και εκπληκτικά σόλο (δεδομένο της αξίας του Andrian Smith). Ένα άλμπουμ με πολυ καλα στοιχεία και ωριμότητα στις συνθέσεις αλλά τολμώ να πω και με αρκετές αδυναμίες ή αν θέλετε ερωτηματικά. Για να μπούνε όλα σε μια σειρά, ας ξεκινήσουμε με την εξαιρετική δουλειά στα τύμπανα απο τον Nicko Mcbrain τα οποία αφήνουν μια ιδιαίτερη αίσθηση στην συνολική εικόνα του άλμπουμ. Στο μέρος με τις κιθάρες οι κλασσικές Maiden μελωδίες κλέβουν την παράσταση και δένουν απόλυτα στην όλη εικόνα και τα φωνητικά του Bruce. Συνθέσεις με ιδιαίτερο ύφος, που ήταν δεδομένο αν κρίνουμε με το τι έχει δώσει η μπάντα στην διάρκεια της δισκογραφικής της πορείας. Περιττά τα σχόλια βέβαια και για το μπάσο του Steve Harris ο οποίος συνθετικά έχει μεγάλο μερίδιο στο άλμπουμ!

Επειδή δύσκολα βρίσκεται άλμπουμ που να αγγίζει την τελειότητα και δεδομένων των απαιτήσεων που έχει η Metal κοινότητα από την μπάντα αξίζει να αναφέρουμε και τα αρνητικά σημεία της συγκεκριμένης κυκλοφορίας που ξεχωρίζουν. Πρώτον, την χαμηλή ή κάπως μουντή αν θέλετε παραγωγή η οποία θεωρώ είναι μεγάλο μειονέκτημα για το εύρος και το μέγεθος της μπάντας! Δεύτερον, η μεγάλη διάρκεια των κομματιών η οποία θεωρώ αν είχε περιοριστεί θα μιλούσαμε για ένα διαφορετικό άλμπουμ! Τρίτον, τα επαναλαμβανόμενα σόλο που παραπέμπουν σε παλαιότερες συνθέσεις της μπάντας. Για να είμαι πιο συγκεκριμένος, ακούστε τα παρακάτω σόλο σημεία προσεχτικά και συγκρίνετε. Lost in a lost world 06:24 – 06:28 / Caught somewhere in time 04:00 – 04:05  όπως επίσης και Stratego 03:36 – 03:42 / Afraid to shoot strangers 05:36 – 05:42. Μια μπάντα του μεγέθους των Iron Maiden δεν θα έπρεπε να αναλωθεί στο να επαναλάβει ή ακόμη και να αντιγράψει τον ίδιο της τον εαυτό.

Highlights: 1. Το έπος σε σύνθεση και εκτέλεση που ακούει στο τίτλο Days of Future Past (Dickinson / Smith). Μια εκπληκτική σύνθεση που εύκολα θα μπορούσε να είναι επιλεγμένο για την σόλο καριέρα του Bruce (όσοι έχουν ανοιχτά αυτιά και μυαλό θα καταλάβουν) 2. Hell on Earth (Harris) 3. Darkest Hour (Dickinson / Smith) με εκπληκτικό σόλο που δεν γίνεται να μην το ξανακουσεις. Σόλο με ψυχή και συναίσθημα που διαφέρει μακράν σε όλο το άλμπουμ.

Ίσως είναι νωρίς να δώσουμε τον τίτλο που κάποιοι βιάστηκαν να δώσουν ως “Masterpiece” σε αυτήν την κυκλοφορία, μιας και ο χρόνος αποδίδει αυτή την ταυτότητα! Πρόκειται όμως για μια αξιοπρεπή δουλειά που δεν θα περάσει απαρατήρητη και σίγουρα θα κεντρίσει το ενδιαφέρον για ολα τα θετικά και τα αρνητικά σημεία της.

September 3^rd is here and the long awaited release of Iron Maiden is the event of the day, month, year. A release that has fired up much talk, controversy and critics even before it’s release date. It’s the 17^th  Studio album of the band, which is undoubtedly better than The book of souls (2015) but also The final frontier (2010). A release with songs that will be loved by the fans but also the metal community.

We are talking about a very intriguing album with very good compositions, excellent guitars, catchy riffs and incredible solos (Andrian Smith is an undisputed constant). An album with very good elements and maturity in the songs but quite a few weaknesses or even flaws. In order to set the record straight let’s begin by the amazing work behind the drums by Nicko Mcbrain which make a very good impression throughout the album. In the guitar parts the classic “Maidenish” melodies are all there and they are perfectly bound with Bruce’s vocals. Songs with peculiar mood which was to be expected given the past of these legends. As for Steve Harris, I think there is no need to comment on his bass and the huge part he plays in writing most of the album!

Given the fact that it’s difficult to find an album that can touch perfection, but also the expectations the metal community has from a band of this magnitude we need to mention the negative elements of this release. Firstly, the pour or even muffled production which in my opinion is a huge downside for the size of the band! Secondly, the duration of the songs which, had it be cut down, we would be talking about a different album whatsoever! Thirdly, the repetition of the solo parts which resemble older songs of the band. In order to be more precise, listen to the following solo parts and compare. Lost in a lost world 06:24 – 06:28 / Caught somewhere in time 04:00 – 04:05  but also Stratego 03:36 – 03:42 / Afraid to shoot strangers 05:36 – 05:42. A band such as Iron Maiden shouldn’t be repetitive or even of its self!

Highlights: 1. The epic song entitled Days of Future Past (Dickinson / Smith). A song that could easily be part of Bruce Dickinson’s solo career (those who listen without taboos will know what I mean) 2. Hell on Earth (Harris) 3. Darkest Hour (Dickinson / Smith) with an amazing solo which you can’t help but listen and repeat. A solo full of soul and emotion which differs from the rest of the album.

Maybe it’s too early to use the title “Masterpiece” that some were impatient to offer, because only time can certify this quality in any release! However, it is a very solid album which will make its mark and will provoke interest for all its positive and negative characteristics.

Η μουσική των Jinjer είναι πολύπλοκη με αρκετά βαριά ακούσματα και το Wallflowers είναι ίσως το πιο “βαρύ”, το πιο πολύπλοκο αλλά και το πιο ευέλικτο άλμπουμ που μας έχουν προσφέρει έως τώρα και αποτελείται από έντεκα κομμάτια τα οποία μουσικά και στιχουργικά κινούνται γύρω από αυτά που όλοι βιώσαμε τον τελευταίο ενάμιση χρόνο. Αβεβαιότητα και άγχος εκφράζονται μέσω των άγριων και επιθετικών συνθέσεων και μετατρέπονται  σε μεγαλοπρεπής και μελαγχολικές μελωδίες, με τις οποίες σίγουρα θα ταυτιστούμε, αφού η συναισθηματική φόρτιση και η μελαγχολία, ήταν κάτι που όλοι μας “γευτήκαμε” τους τελευταίους μήνες.

Ακούγοντας το Wallflowers, καταλαβαίνεις ότι στο άλμπουμ αυτό οι Jinjer έχουν δώσει μεγάλη βάση στη μελωδικότητα, την οποία έχουν πολύ έξυπνα και επιτυχημένα συνδυάσει με μία αιχμηρή επιθετικότητα, όπως για παράδειγμα στα “Vortex”, “Call Me A Symbol” και το μεγαλοπρεπές finale – stop…GO! “Mediator”. Τα “Pearls and Swine” και το μαγευτικό ομώνυμο “Wallflowers” μας δείχνουν μία άλλη πλευρά των Jinjer, με μία σαγηνευτική Tatiana Shmayluk, η οποία καταφέρνει να δώσει στο άλμπουμ, τόσο φωνητικά όσο και στιχουργικά, μία τόσο οικεία κυκλοθυμία στην οποία δε μπορείς να αντισταθείς.

Wallflowers σημαίνει progressive και djent ατμόσφαιρα, άφθονο grooving, με grungy αλλά και jazz αποχρώσεις. Αγνή επιθετικότητα και αιχμηρή μελαγχολία, με meaty, metalcore αλλά και staccato death metal riffs από τον Roman Ibramkhalilov,  groovy  blasts και soul-felt μπάσο από τον Eugene Abdukhanov και τον Vlad Ulasevich να ξεδιπλώνει σκοτεινούς, ακαταμάχητους drumming ήχους.

…Και κάπως έτσι οι Jinjer μοιράζονται μία πιο ευάλωτη πλευρά τους με την οποία μπορούμε όλοι μας να ταυτιστούμε και για μένα αυτό κάνει το Wallflowers ξεχωριστό. Πολύπλοκο, σκοτεινό και θυμωμένο, αλλά ξεχωριστό. Οι Jinjer μας δείχνουν ότι είναι μία ασταμάτητη δύναμη που έχουν πλέον στη κατοχή τους ένα συντριπτικά βαρύ, έξυπνο, άκρως δημιουργικό και ειλικρινές Wallflowers.

Jinjer is undeniably a band that has shaken the metal music scene with its multi-dimensional and versatile sound and that has worked very hard earning the respect of the modern metal audience.  Wallflowers is Jinjer’s 4th studio album, released on August 27th via Napalm Records, and is definitely one of the most anticipated albums of 2021.

Jinjer’s music is complex with some pretty heavy sounds, and Wallflowers is probably the heaviest, most complex but also the most versatile album they’ve offered us so far, consisting of eleven tracks that musically and lyrically revolve around what we’ve all experienced in the last year and a half. Uncertainty and anxiety are expressed through the wild and aggressive compositions and transformed into majestic and melancholic melodies, with which we will surely identify, since the emotional charge and melancholy was something we all “tasted” in the last months.

Listening to Wallflowers, you understand that Jinjer have put a lot of emphasis on melodicism in this album, which they have very cleverly and successfully combined with a sharp aggression, as for example in “Vortex”, “Call Me A Symbol” and the majestic finale – stop…GO! “Mediator”. “Pearls and Swine” and the enchanting title track “Wallflowers” show us another side of Jinjer, with a seductive and melodic Tatiana Shmayluk, who manages to give the album, both vocally and lyrically, such an intimate mood that you can’t resist.

Wallflowers means progressive and djent atmosphere, plenty of grooving, with both grungy and jazzy nuances. Pure aggression and sharp melancholy, with meaty, metalcore but also staccato death metal riffs from Roman Ibramkhalilov, groovy blasts and soul-felt bass from Eugene Abdukhanov and Vlad Ulasevich unfolding dark irresistible drumming sounds.

…And just like that Jinjer shared with us the more vulnerable  side of them, one that we can all identify with and for me that’s what makes Wallflowers special. Complex, dark and angry, but special. Jinjer show us that they are an unstoppable force that now possess a crushingly heavy, intelligent, highly creative and honest Wallflowers.

Τα  “Running Low” και “The Silent Revelation” ήταν τα δύο πρώτα κομμάτια που κυκλοφόρησαν από το Aphelion και σίγουρα μας έδωσαν μία πολύ αντιπροσωπευτική γεύση Leprous; progressive ήχοι, drums και μπάσο γεμάτα ψυχή, εθιστικά riffs, ένας  Einar Solberg γεμάτος συναίσθημα, με την ικανότητα των Leprous να αλλάζουν συνεχώς μουσικές δυναμικές.

Η μαγεία του Αphelion όμως δε έχει ξεκινήσει ακόμη.

Στα πρώτα δυόμιση λεπτά του “Out Of Here”, ο Einar με έναν ήρεμο τόνο καταφέρνει να αγγίξει όλες τις γωνίες της ψυχής σου, συνοδευόμενος από calm ηλεκτρονικούς ήχους, μέχρι που κιθάρες, drums και μπάσο θα έρθουν να αλλάξουν το tempo και τις μουσικές δυναμικές, ξυπνώντας σου έτσι όλες τις αισθήσεις.  Ακολουθεί το “Silhouette”, τέσσερα λεπτά γεμάτα συναίσθημα κατευθυνόμενα από synth-bass ήχους, με όλα τα μουσικά όργανα να έχουν τις δικές του εκρήξεις,  συνυπάρχοντας όμως αρμονικά. Το φωνητικό εύρος του Einar είναι πλούσιο, γεμάτο από συναίσθημα χωρίς όμως να επισκιάζει την υπόλοιπη σύνθεση. Ένα πλούσιο και μελωδικό κομμάτι που δε θα ξεχάσεις εύκολα.

Το “On Hold” είναι το μεγαλύτερο σε διάρκεια κομμάτι του άλμπουμ. Μια εκτενής καταγραφή συναισθημάτων γύρω από το κύριο θέμα του Aphelion, το στρες και την κατάθλιψη μέσα από τις προσωπικές εμπειρίες του Einar Solberg. Μελαγχολικά φαλτσέτα, φανταστικές αρμονίες, με το τσέλο να προσθέτει τη βαρύτητα που αυτό το κομμάτι χρειάζεται, δημιουργώντας μία ατμόσφαιρα που σε απορροφά.

Το οικείο, απ’ το 2020, “Castaway Angels” μας προετοιμάζει για το κλείσιμο του Aphelion, το “Nighttime Disguise”, που γράφτηκε με τη συμμετοχή οπαδών της μπάντας μέσω live-in-studio streaming. Εναλλαγές διάθεσης, βαρύς ρυθμοί που μεταλλάσσονται σε αιθέριες μελωδίες, πνευστοί ήχοι, πιάνο, τσέλο, βιολί και growling φωνητικά; ένα κλείσιμο καθηλωτικό και η απόδειξη πως οι Leprous είναι δικαίως progressive masters.

Κάποιες μουσικές επαναλήψεις υπάρχουν μέσα στο άλμπουμ και γι’ αυτό ίσως σε κάποια κομμάτια να χάνει λίγους πόντους από θέμα πρωτοτυπίας. H παραγωγή και ο ήχος είναι σε αρκετά υψηλά επίπεδα, ολοκληρώνοντας έτσι ένα όμορφο και πολύ προσεγμένο  Aphelion, γεμάτο από δέκα κομμάτια τόσο όμορφα συνδυασμένα, που θα γεμίσουν τη ψυχή σου.

Το Aphelion για εμένα είναι ένα καθρέφτης τη δυναμικής, πολύπλοκης και συγκινητικής μουσικής ψυχής των Leprous. Ένα μουσικό δώρο, δυνατό αλλά και εύθραυστο που είμαι σίγουρη πως θα αγκαλιαστεί και θα μείνει στις καρδιές μας για πολύ καιρό.

If you are familiar with the music of the Norwegian progressive masters Leprous, then you already know the beautiful peculiarities that make them unique. Aphelion is their seventh studio album, which will be released on August 27th via InsideOut Music. We listened to it and here’s a first taste.

“Running Low” and “The Silent Revelation” were the first two tracks released from Aphelion and certainly gave us a very representative Leprous taste; progressive sounds, soulful drums and bass, addictive riffs, an Einar Solberg full of emotion, with Leprous’ ability to constantly change musical dynamics.

But the magic of Aphelion has not yet begun.

In the first two and a half minutes of “Out Of Here”, Einar with a calm tone manages to touch all corners of your soul, accompanied by calm electronic sounds, until guitars, drums and bass come in to change the tempo and the musical dynamics, awakening all your senses.  “Silhouette” follows with four minutes of emotion-driven synth-bass sounds and with all the musical instruments having their own bursts, but coexisting harmoniously. Einar’s vocal range is rich, full of emotion without though shadowing the rest of the composition. A rich and melodic track that you won’t easily forget.

“On Hold” is the longest track on the album. An extensive record of emotions around the main theme of Aphelion, stress and depression through Einar Solberg’s personal experiences. Melancholic falsetto, beautiful harmonies and with the cello adding the heaviness this track needs, creating an atmosphere that absorbs you.

The familiar and heartfelt “Castaway Angels” (2020) sets us up for Aphelion’s closing track, “Nighttime Disguise”, written with the partial-participation of the band’s fans via a live-in-studio streaming. Mood swings, heavy rhythms that morph into ethereal melodies, brass instruments, piano, cello, violin and growling vocals; a captivating finale and the proof that Leprous are rightfully progressive masters.

There are some musical repetitions in the album and that’s why some tracks might lose a few points in terms of originality. However, the production and the sound are at a pretty high level, thus completing a beautiful and very well thought out Aphelion made of ten tracks so beautifully combined, that they will be engraved in your soul.

For me Aphelion is a mirror of Leprous’ dynamic, complex and emotionally moving musical soul. A musical gift, so powerful yet so fragile that I am sure it will be embraced and stay in our hearts for a long time.
