Και επειδή η Σίσσυ είναι από τους παραγωγούς που εκφράζεται καλύτερα στο γραπτό παρά στο βίντεο…

Η αλήθεια είναι ότι για να καταλήξω στο παρακάτω top 10 άλλαξα 10 φορές γνώμη. Όχι απαραίτητα για την σειρά αλλά για το ποιά albums πρέπει να είναι μέσα σε αυτή τη δεκάδα. Μερόνυχτα αργότερα κατέληξα. Με βαριά καρδιά άφησα όμως εκτός κάποια albums που μου αρέσουν πολύ. Ακόμα και τώρα που υποτίθεται πρέπει να παραδώσω αυτό το κείμενο με τρώει να ξαναλάξω τη σειρά και να βάλω μέσα ένα άλλο album. Όπως το γιοφύρι της Άρτας έτσι και η λίστα μου χτιζόταν το πρωί και το βράδυ γκρεμιζόταν και ξεκινούσα από την αρχή! Ο λόγος που δεν μπορούσα να καταλήξω είναι εμφανής… Το 2023 είχε κυρίως ΦΟΒΕΡΕΣ νέες κυκλοφορίες!!!

** Η σειρά τοποθέτησής τους δεν έχει καμία σημασία, είναι καθαρά αποτέλεσμα του σβήσε-γράψε που ανέφερα παραπάνω.

Μεταξύ των όσων άκουσα – και άκουσα πολλά albums και εκκρεμούν άλλα τόσα – νομίζω ότι δυο με απογοήτευσαν περισσότερο…
Θα ξεκινήσω από το “Remember… You Must Die” των Suicide Silence, που είναι μια από τις μπάντες που συμπαθώ ιδιαιτέρως. Δεν είναι κακό απλά μου φάνηκε λίγο μονότονο, δεν μου έκανε αυτό το “κλικ”.  Δεν ξέρω τι περίμενα από μια μπάντα όπως οι Obituary, πάντως το album τους “Dying of Everything” δε με ενθουσίασε.

Άφησα εκτός τα φοβερά albums των Incantation “Unholy Deification” και Cattle Decapitation “Terrasite”. Όταν τα άκουσα έτρεμε το γραφείο μου και είχα πορωθεί τόσο που ήθελα να μαδήσω ένα-ένα τα λαμπάκια του χριστουγεννιάτικου δέντρου που είχα δίπλα μου! Ένα ακόμα album που άφησα εκτός δεκάδας και με τρώνε οι τύψεις είναι αυτό των Ov Sulfur “The Burden Ov Faith” (ω θεοί τι deathcorίλα!). Αρκετά καλό album είναι και το “Life Is But A Dream…” από τους αγαπημένους Avenged Sevenfold το οποίο έχει λάβει πολλές καλές κριτικές και φλερτάρει με τις πρώτες θέσεις και προτιμήσεις των fans. Αν έφτιαχνα top20 θα ήταν μέσα κι αυτό και σίγουρα θα είχαν μια θέση και το “Shades Of Sorrow” των Crypta, το “Land of the Black Sun” των εξαιρετικών AmongRuins αλλά και το ομότιτλο των On Thorns I Lay. Ειδικά τα δυο τελευταία με παίδεψαν πολύ περισσότερο απ’όσο φανταζόμουν.

Tο album των Orbit Culture “Descent” μου άρεσε αρκετά, ΑΛΛΑ όχι τόσο όσο το EP τους “The Forgotten”. Εν τούτοις το θεώρησα άδικο να βάλω το EP και όχι το album στην 10άδα. Αξίζει να τα ακούσετε και τα δυο και να τους δώσετε την δέουσα προσοχή γιατί το αξίζουν! Εξαιρετικό album είναι και των TessaracT “War of Being” που με εξέπληξε ευχάριστα και νομίζω υπό άλλες συνθήκες θα ήταν μέσα στο top10 μαζί με τους Αυστραλούς Polaris που το 3^ο studio album τους “Fatalism” είναι υπόδειγμα metalcore!!

Τέλος, μην ξεχάσετε να ακούσετε και τις δισκάρες των Suffocation “Hymns From The Apocrypha”, Dying Fetus “Make Them Beg For Death”, Autopsy “Ashes, Organs, Blood and Crypts” και Cryptosy “As Gomorrah Burns”.

ΟΥΦ! Τελείωσα… Καλές γιορτές με ΥΓΕΙΑ και άπειρη METAL!!!

Post black ατμοσφαιρικό με γυναικεία φωνητικά και όχι τον καλύτερο ήχο παρουσίασαν το υλικό τους χωρίς πολλές καθυστερήσεις ή ιδιαίτερο interaction με το κοινό. Δεν γνώριζα το συγκρότημα και δεν ήμουν εξοικειωμένη με το υλικό τους. Θεωρώ ότι πιθανόν η studio δουλειά τους να είναι καλύτερη πάντως η ανταπόκριση του κοινού ήταν θερμή και μάλιστα είδα και αρκετά μπλουζάκια της μπάντας στο χώρο που δείχνει ότι σίγουρα οι φίλοι της μπάντας την υποστηρίζουν.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή οι OCEAN OF GRIEF. Ομολογώ ότι παρόλο που είχα ακούσει για τη μπάντα δεν είχε τύχει να ακούσω υλικό τους πάρα μόνο τη φήμη ότι είναι καλοί. Με αυτό που παρακολούθησα την Παρασκευή το επιβεβαιώνω. Είναι μια μπάντα καλοπροβαρισμένη και δεμένη με συμπαγή ατμοσφαιρικό doom ήχο που παρουσιάστηκε πολύ σωστά ηχητικά και παικτικά, αλλά και σε πολύ καλή φόρμα στο κοινό που τους γνώριζε και ανταποκρίθηκε.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή οι πρώτοι από τους δύο headliners AMONG RUINS. Οι Αθηναίοι melodic death metallers παρουσίασαν το καινούριο τους άλμπουμ Land Of The Black Sun όμως ο ήχος δεν ήταν με το μέρος τους. Ο ηχολήπτης που διαχειριζόταν τα μόνιτορ της σκηνής είχε θέματα, διακόπηκε η συναυλία δυο τρεις φορές σπάζοντας τον παλμό της. Η ήχος τους έβγαινε πολύ βαβουριάρικος αλλά η μπάντα δεν έχασε στιγμή την όρεξη της να παρουσιάσει το υλικό με το οποίο επέστρεψαν στην ενεργό δράση. Δεν παρέλειψαν να παίξουν τα αγαπημένα του κοινού από τις προηγούμενες κυκλοφορίες τους ενώ πάνω στη σκηνή είχαν και δύο guest εμφανίσεις. Στο ομότιτλο του άλμπουμ Land Of The Black Sun στη σκηνή μαζί τους ήταν ο Γιώργος Προκοπίου και ο Αλέξανδρος Παπανδρέου των Desert Near The End για το Intensity. Τολμώ να πώ ότι η τύχη δεν ήταν με το μέρος τους και το live θα μπορούσε να είναι πολύ πιο πορωτικό αν δεν είχαν τόσα θέματα με τον ήχο να τους αναγκάζουν να διακόπτουν το σετ. Ωστόσο θεωρώ ότι έδειξαν μεγάλη υπομονή και επιμονή για να συνεχίζουν ακούραστα και παθιασμένα παρα τις κακοτυχίες.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή οι AETHERIAN που βγήκαν στη σκηνή σα σίφουνες. Παρόλη την αργοπορία και την κούραση είχαν τέτοιο παλμό που το κοινό παρασύρθηκε από την τεράστια φόρα τους. Έπαιξαν ολόκληρο το νέο τους άλμπουμ At Storm’s Edge και έκλεισαν το σετ τους με το The Rain. Ο ήχος τους θυμίζει έντονα Insomnium ενώ η επικότητα των συνθέσεων του νέου άλμπουμ δίνει ένα πολεμικό/ επαναστατικό αέρα. Πάρα πολύ δεμένοι, άψογα προβαρισμένοι με εξαιρετικό ήχο. Πολύ καλοί παίκτες και ειδικά ο Άγγελος Μανιατάκος στην κιθάρα. Το αποτέλεσμα που παρουσίασαν με οδηγεί στο συμπέρασμα ότι σίγουρα έχουν κάνει συστηματική δουλειά και έχουν τεράστια διάθεση και ενέργεια για τη μουσική τους.

Αν θα έπρεπε με μια κουβέντα να συνοψίσω το βράδυ της Παρασκευής αυτό θα ήταν μακάρι όλα τα live της ελληνικής σκηνής να ήταν έτσι. Τόσο από ποιότητα συγκροτημάτων όσο και προσέλευσης. Κρίμα για τα τόσα τεχνικά προβλήματα στους AMONG RUINS.

Οι BLOODRED HOURGLASS, είναι ήδη γνωστοί για το μείγμα μελωδικών και death metal επιρροών και με το προηγούμενο άλμπουμ τους Your Highness έχουν ωριμάσει περισσότερο, ενισχύοντας τις μουσικές τους διαστάσεις και ενσωματώνοντας καθαρά φωνητικά στον ήχο τους. Με το “How‘s the Heart?” παρουσιάζουν την εξέλιξή τους ως μουσικοί και δημιουργοί. Ο Jarkko Koukonen φαίνεται να έχει ξεπεράσει τις επιρροές του ως τραγουδιστής και παρουσιάζει ένα μεγαλύτερο εύρος φωνητικών που κάνει ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ πολυδιάστατο. Τα μάλλον ντροπαλά και πειραματικά καθαρά φωνητικά που παρουσιάστηκαν για πρώτη φορά στο προηγούμενο άλμπουμ τους είναι πλέον πιο σίγουρα και τοποθετημένα ακριβώς όπως πρέπει για να εξυπηρετήσουν καλύτερα το κάθε τραγούδι. Τα ορχηστρικά μέρη είναι τοποθετημένα τέλεια στη θέση τους για να δημιουργήσουν μια πιο δραματική ατμόσφαιρα που ανακινεί τα συναισθήματα.

“Μερικές φορές οι μικρές στιγμές γίνονται οι πιο σημαντικές αναμνήσεις στη ζωή σας. Το τραγούδι ‘How’s the Heart?’ είναι εύκολα το πιο απλό τραγούδι στην ιστορία της μπάντας.” σχολιάζει η μπάντα και πρέπει να πω ότι όταν πρωτοείδα τον τίτλο πριν καν ακούσω το τραγούδι σκέφτηκα στον εαυτό μου ότι ποτέ δεν απογοητεύουν με τα θέματα που επιλέγουν να γράψουν τους στίχους. Έχουν απόλυτη επαφή με την κοινωνική συναίνεση και πιάνουν τον παλμό της κοινωνίας αγγίζοντας θέματα με τα οποία ο καθένας μας μπορεί να ταυτιστεί.

Το “How’s the Heart?” θα σας ταξιδέψει μέσα από τα στάδια της θλίψης αναμειγνύοντας την επιθετικότητα και την ευαισθησία. Το χαρακτηριστικό τους riffing, το επιθετικό drumming, τα πολύπλευρα φωνητικά, τα πιασάρικα ρεφρέν και τα μεγαλειώδη synths είναι μιξαρισμένα και masterαρισμένα από τον Dan Braunstein (Spiritbox, Veil Of Maya, Dayseeker).

Αν είστε έτοιμοι να κάνετε μια βουτιά στη δική σας καρδιά και να απαντήσετε με ειλικρίνεια “How’s the Heart?” (πώς είναι η καρδιά σας) νομίζω ότι δεν πρέπει να χάσετε αυτό το άλμπουμ. Θα γίνει μέρος του καθημερινού σας soundtrack.

I consider BLOODRED HOURGLASS, among the bands that drive the melodic death metal sound to its future so I have high expectations for every step they make. When I first gave “How’s the Heart?” a spin, which came out on October 20^th through Out Of Line Music I expected much and I got more.

BLOODRED HOURGLASS, are already known for their blend of melodic and death metal influences, and with their previous album Your Highness have grew more mature, enhancing their musical dimensions and incorporating clean vocals in their sound. With “How’s the Heart?” they showcase their evolution as musicians and creators. Jarkko Koukonen seems to have outgrown his influences as a vocalist and presents a wider span of vocals which makes the entire album multidimensional. The rather shy and experimental clean vocals presented for the very first time in their previous album are now more confident and placed exactly as they should be in order to better serve each song. Orchestral parts are placed perfectly in place to create a more dramatic atmosphere which stirs emotions.

“Sometimes the small moments become the most meaningful memories in your life. The song ‘How’s the Heart?’ is easily the most straightforward song in the history of the band.” comments the band, and I have to say, when I first saw the title before even listening to the song I though to myself that they never disappoint with the topics they choose to write the lyrics on. They are totally in touch with the social consensus and they get the pulse of the society touching topics which every one of us can relate to.

 “How’s the Heart?” will take you through the stages of grief blending aggression and sensitivity. Their trademark riffing, aggressive drumming, versatile vocals, catchy choruses, and grandeur synths are mixed and mastered by Dan Braunstein (Spiritbox, Veil Of Maya, Dayseeker).

If you are ready to take a dive into your own heart and honestly answer “How’s the Heart?” I think you shouldn’t miss out on this album. It will become a part of your everyday soundtrack.

Την Πέμπτη 19 Οκτωβρίου, οι DARK TRANQULLITY μοιράστηκαν ένα βίντεο με τον ντράμερ Joakim Strandberg Nilsson να βάζει κομμάτια για τον διάδοχο του “Moment” του 2020 και περιείχε το ακόλουθο μήνυμα: “Έχει ξεκινήσει! Αυτή η εβδομάδα σηματοδοτεί επίσημα την έναρξη της διαδικασίας ηχογράφησης για το επόμενο άλμπουμ των D.T.. Ρίξτε μια γρήγορη ματιά στον Joakim που βάζει τα ρυθμικά θεμέλια στα Fascination Street Studios. Μείνετε συντονισμένοι για περισσότερες πληροφορίες!”

Το “Moment”, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε τον Νοέμβριο του 2020, ηχογραφήθηκε στα Nacksving Studios και Rogue Music από τον Martin Brändström και στη συνέχεια έγινε μίξη/μαστερ από τον Jens Bogren στα Fascination Street Studios.

Swedish metallers DARK TRANQULLITY have entered Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden to begin recording their new album.

On Thursday October 19th,DARK TRANQULLITY shared a video of drummer Joakim Strandberg Nilsson laying down tracks for the follow-up to 2020’s “Moment“, and it included the following message: “It has begun! This week officially marks the start of the recording process for the next D.T. album. Have a quick look at Joakim laying down the rhythm foundation at Fascination Street Studios. Stay tuned for more info!”

“Moment”, which was released in November 2020, was recorded at Nacksving Studios and Rogue Music by Martin Brändström and then mixed/mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios.

Η απάντηση του Lars ήταν απροσδόκητα ειλικρινής: “Δεν ξέρω αν έχω τόση γνώση για το τι συμβαίνει γύρω μου όσο πριν από 20, 30 χρόνια, και δεν ξέρω αν ενδιαφέρομαι να είμαι τόσο πολύ μέρος αυτής της συζήτησης όσο ήμουν, αλλά όταν με ρωτάνε, σίγουρα νιώθω ότι αυτό που κάνουμε στο hard rock γενικότερα συνδέεται με πολύ κόσμο. Αλλά όσον αφορά το zeitgeist και τη γενικότερη mainstream κουλτούρα, δεν αισθάνομαι ότι είμαστε τόσο πολύ μέρος της mainstream συζήτησης όσο ήταν στο παρελθόν”.

“Πιθανότατα είχαμε το εμπορικότερο καλοκαίρι που είχαμε ποτέ μόνο από την άποψη του αριθμού των εισιτηρίων που πουλήθηκαν μεταξύ των ευρωπαϊκών και αμερικανικών ημερομηνιών μας. Προφανώς, αυτό είναι ένα πλήρες mindfuck δεδομένου ότι είναι 42 χρόνια μέσα σε αυτή τη διαδρομή. Αλλά την ίδια στιγμή, αισθάνομαι ότι το hard rock είναι περισσότερο υποκουλτούρα και λιγότερο mainstream από ό,τι ήταν.” πρόσθεσε.

“Κοιτάζοντας πίσω, στη δεκαετία του ’80 με το MTV και το AOR ραδιόφωνο και τα περιοδικά από το Rolling Stone μέχρι το Kerrang! … αισθάνομαι ότι το hard rock ήταν πολύ περισσότερο μια συζήτηση στο mainstream απ’ ό,τι είναι τώρα. Έτσι, ενώ αυτά τα νούμερα είναι τρελά – και ξέρω ότι τόσες άλλες μπάντες κάνουν τρελά νούμερα, όπως οι Guns N’ Roses, οι Slipknot, οι Ghost, οι Disturbed – αισθάνομαι ότι το hard rock είναι περισσότερο μέρος μιας υποκουλτούρας και κάπως έξω από το mainstream και πάλι, όπως όταν ξεκινήσαμε τους Metallica“. κατέληξε ο Lars.

Πρόκειται για μια σημαντική παραδοχή από τον Ulrich, δεδομένου ότι οι Metallica είναι ένα από τα πιο επιτυχημένα και επιδραστικά heavy metal συγκροτήματα όλων των εποχών, ενώ πρόσφατα κατέρριψαν το ρεκόρ της Taylor Swift για την πιο πολυπληθή συναυλία σε στάδιο της Καλιφόρνιας. Μιλάει επίσης για μια ευρύτερη τάση στη μουσική βιομηχανία, όπου το hard rock και το heavy metal έχουν περιθωριοποιηθεί όλο και περισσότερο τα τελευταία χρόνια.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich was asked if he feels the mainstream understands heavy music any better now than it did back in 1989, considering that almost every record Metallica has released ever since has topped the charts.

Lars‘ response was surprisingly candid: “I don’t know if I have as much knowledge of what’s going on around me as I did 20, 30 years ago, and I don’t know if I’m interested in being as much a part of that conversation as I was, but when asked, it definitely feels like what we’re doing in hard rock in general is connecting with a lot of people. But in terms of the zeitgeist and overall mainstream culture, it doesn’t feel like we’re as much a part of the mainstream conversation as it has been in the past.”

“We’ve probably had the biggest summer we’ve ever had just in terms of sheer number of tickets sold between our European and American dates. Obviously, that’s a complete mindfuck given that it’s 42 years into this ride. But at the same time, it feels that hard rock is more of a subculture and less mainstream than it’s been.” he added.

“Looking back, at the Eighties with MTV and AOR radio and magazines from Rolling Stone to Kerrang! … it feels like hard rock was much more a conversation in the mainstream than it is now. So while these numbers are crazy — and I know so many other bands are doing crazy numbers, like Guns N’ Roses, Slipknot, Ghost, Disturbed — it feels like hard rock is more part of a subculture and kind of outside of the mainstream again like when we started Metallica.” Lars concluded.

This is a significant admission from Ulrich, given that Metallica is one of the most successful and influential heavy metal bands of all time, recently beating Taylor Swift‘s record of the highest attended show in a Californian stadium. It also speaks to a larger trend in the music industry, where hard rock and heavy metal have become increasingly marginalized in recent years.

Οι IRON MAIDEN ολοκλήρωσαν πρόσφατα το πρώτο σκέλος της περιοδείας “The Future Past”.

Το “The Future Past” περιλαμβάνει τραγούδια που δεν είχαν παρουσιαστεί μέχρι τώρα από το πιο πρόσφατο studio album των MAIDEN, “Senjutsu”, μαζί με έμφαση στο LP “Somewhere In Time” του 1986, καθώς και άλλα κλασικά κομμάτια.

In a new interview with Dave Gleeson of Australia’s Triple M radio station, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson was asked how he and his bandmates have been able to incorporate a lot of new material into their setlist, seemingly without much pushback from their fans. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “Well, yeah, that’s because they — that’s because, strangely, they actually like the music. [Laughs] Which is bizarre, isn’t it? I know that’s a really weird concept now — where people actually go to a show to listen to the music. But it’s because we’re not fashion icons or anything else like that. We’ve always been — how can I put it? We’re not like Michelin star chef-type grub; we’re meat and potatoes. And it’s straightforward, what people come to see is. I mean, the songs are not necessarily straightforward, but the attitude is. And we still play all the songs in the original key; we don’t drop, downtune and stuff like that. We still play everything too fast, because we’re all excited. We’ve never played to click tracks or like time code and everything else now, ’cause I see a lot of bands now, and I’m going, ‘Hang on a minute. Hey, you sang that without moving your lips.’ So there’s all this backing vocals being flown in left, right and center and everything. But we don’t do any of that. Everything is analog and real. So we are kind of old school in that respect. But I think that pays dividends ’cause the audience understand that reality is increasingly kind of rare now.”

IRON MAIDEN recently completed the 2023 leg of “The Future Past” tour.

“The Future Past” features previously unperformed songs from MAIDEN‘s most recent studio album, “Senjutsu”, along with a focus on 1986’s “Somewhere In Time” LP, plus other classic cuts.

British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST have released a new single, “Panic Attack”. The track, which can be streamed below, is taken from the band’s upcoming studio album, “Invincible Shield”, which will arrive on March 8, 2024 via Sony Music.

Το How It Ends είναι το δέκατο στούντιο άλμπουμ των Primordial και κυκλοφόρησε στις 29 Σεπτεμβρίου από την Metal Blade Records. Aποτελείται από 10 τραγούδια και η πλήρης διάρκειά του είναι 65 λεπτά. Το ερώτημα είναι αν οι Primordial ακολούθησαν τη γνωστή, και επιτυχημένη μέχρι τώρα, μουσική τους συνταγή ή το How It Ends ανακαλύπτει ξανά τον τροχό; Αλλά από την άλλη χρειάζεται πραγματικά οι  Primordial να ανακαλύψουν ξανά τον τροχό;  

Φυσικά και η απάντηση και στις δύο ερωτήσεις είναι όχι. Το How It Ends είναι ένα άλμπουμ που αναδεικνύει το πάθος που εξακολουθούν να διαθέτουν οι Primordial όσον αφορά τη σύνθεση των τραγουδιών τους, τη μουσικότητα και την απόδοσή τους. Στιχουργικά οι Primordial περιστρέφονται γύρω από την Ιρλανδική επανάσταση, με τους στίχους να είναι εμπνευσμένοι από τον Ιρλανδό ποιητή Joseph Mary Plunkett, ο οποίος εκτελέστηκε λόγω της συμμετοχής του στην Πασχαλινή Εξέγερση. Primordial were introduced to us at the end of 90s as a, primarily, black metal band, which developed their own unique sound album by album, blending it with Celtic folk and their beautiful Irish heritage. Primordial do not sound like any other band, that is one thing we know for sure, and they have been able to maintain their identity through all their albums so far. 

How It Ends is Primordial’s tenth studio album and it was released on 29th of September by Metal Blade Records. How It Ends consists of 10 songs and its full duration is 65 minutes. The question i0,s did Primordial follow their known and successful until now music formula, or does How It Ends reinvent the wheel? And again, do Primordial really need to reinvent the wheel? And the answer to both questions is no. How It Ends is an album which highlights the passion that Primordial still possess when it comes to their song writing, their musicianship and their performance.  

Lyrically Primordial revolve around the Irish revolution, with lyrics being inspired by the Irish poet Joseph Mary Plunkett, who was executed due to his involvement in the Easter Uprising. Songs like We Shall Not  Serve and Pilgrimage to the World’s End are inspired by the predicament of Irish convicts and revolutionaries like Ned Kelly.  

Primordial sing about history, blended beautifully with their majestic, pounding and hymn-like music, illustrating that way this unique sound that they have been creating and perfecting during these 35 years of their career. In my ears, at least, Primordial sound as fresh as they did in A Journey’s End  with the evolution and their own unique forged sound being on full display in How It Ends.  

How It Ends is a blend of traditional Celtic soul, heart-breaking melodies and unapologetically beautifully haunting blackened metal. Do we want Primordial to reinvent the wheel? No, personally I do not. I was very happy to hear a How It Ends that celebrates the Primordial we have loved through the years, a band who knows how to create this unique music blend through which they honour their history and their heritage.  

How It Ends is a beautifully sad album through which Primordial keep shining their warm and beautiful light to all of us who have loved them and will continue to do so.

Το Impii Hora (Ungodly Hour στα λατινικά) είναι κάτι παραπάνω από ένας φόρος τιμής στα αγαπημένα old-school συγκροτήματα του Poulsen. Έχει πολλά στοιχεία από όλα τα αγαπημένα του συγκροτήματα όπως Death, Bolt Thrower, Grave, Entombed και πολλά άλλα, όμως έχει την χαρακτηριστική πινελιά του Poulsen. Αυτό που κάνει αυτό το άλμπουμ διαφορετικό είναι ότι δημιουργήθηκε σε μια old school κατάσταση του μυαλού. Όλα τα μέλη ήθελαν να επανασυνδεθούν με την πείνα των 16χρονων metalheads που δεν χόρταιναν τα βαριά riffs για να κάνουν headbanging. Αυτό που με έκανε να απολαύσω το άλμπουμ ακόμα περισσότερο είναι το γεγονός ότι το προσέγγισαν με τρόπο που αιχμαλωτίζει το ακατέργαστο συναίσθημα ενώ είναι εξαιρετικά εξειδικευμένοι επαγγελματίες. Πιασάρικα, ωμά riffs, με τεχνικά στοιχεία που θυμίζουν τον εκπληκτικό Chuck Schuldiner. Από πλευράς παραγωγής είναι αρκετά βρώμικο για να είναι old school και αρκετά ογκώδες για να είναι επίκαιρο. Όσον αφορά τους στίχους, ήταν αποφασισμένοι να δημιουργήσουν διεστραμμένες σκηνές που ταιριάζουν με τη βιαιότητα της μουσικής.

Ο Grewe επιστράτευσε έναν φίλο του ψυχολόγο που αγαπούσε το death metal, τον Dr. Frank Albers, ο οποίος είχε ασχοληθεί με κοινωνιοπαθείς, σχιζοφρενείς και βίαιους εγκληματίες. “Πάντα ήθελε να γράψει death metal στίχους και είχε κάποιες πραγματικά παράξενες ιδέες”, είπε ο Grewe. “Ανταλλάξαμε ιδέες μεταξύ μας και χρησιμοποιήσαμε μερικές από τις φωνητικές γραμμές που είχε βάλει ο Michael στα demos. Χωρίς να υπερβάλουν, έγραψαν για τον πόλεμο (“Fall of the Loyal Warrior”), τον κανιβαλισμό (“Island of Dead Men”), τους κατά συρροή δολοφόνους (“Trophies”, “The Ultimate Sin”) και, φυσικά, τον Σατανά (“Inner Sancticide”, “Desert of Doom”). “Οι στίχοι έπρεπε να είναι βίαιοι για να ταιριάζουν με το vibe και τον ήχο της μουσικής”, λέει ο Poulsen. “Λατρεύω αυτό που έκαναν ο Marc και ο Frank. Θέλαμε οι στίχοι να είναι σκοτεινοί, αλλά και σαρκαστικοί, με μια δόση ειρωνείας”.

Κάπως έτσι τίθεται το ερώτημα, κατάφεραν οι ASINHELL να κάνουν το Impii Hora ένα καλό ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ; Είναι ένα εξαιρετικό άλμπουμ! Είναι ωμό, είναι βαρύ, είναι groovy, είναι πιασάρικο και ξυπνάει μνήμες, ξυπνάει αναμνήσεις από μπάντες που αγαπάμε και συνεχίζει την κληρονομιά τους.  Όμορφες κιθαριστικές μελωδίες και τσαμπουκαλεμένα φωνητικά που ουρλιάζουν τα σωθικά μας. Είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου άλμπουμ που ακούω από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος αυτές τις μέρες και ανυπομονώ να το ακούσω ζωντανά. Κυκλοφορεί 29 Σεπτέμβρη από τη Metal Blade.

For everyone not aware of Michael Poulsen’s past ASINHELL came as a surprise. But as he told us in our video interview his love for death metal had always been there and he always intended to form a death metal band. ASINHELL is the realization of this dream, intended to sound like an old school death album released back in the 90s. However, being the musicians they are, all members of the band, know exactly what they are doing as they are no longer 15 or 16 years old.

Impii Hora (Ungodly Hour in Latin) is more than a tribute to Poulsen’s favorite old-school groups. It has many elements from all of his favorite bands such us Death, Bolt Thrower, Grave, Entombed and many others yet it has the distinctive Poulsen touch. What makes this album different is that it was made in an old school state of mind. All members wanted to reconnect with the hunger of the 16year old metalheads who couldn’t get enough of heavy riffs to headbang. What made me enjoy the album even more is the fact that they approached it in a manner of captivating the raw feeling while being extremely skilled professionals. Catchy, raw riffs, with technical elements reminding us of the amazing Chuck Schuldiner. Production wise it’s dirty enough to be old school and vast enough to be current. As far as the lyrics are concerned, They were determined to craft twisted scenes that matched the music’s brutality. Grewe recruited a death metal-loving psychologist friend, Dr. Frank Albers, who had dealt with sociopaths, schizophrenics, and violent criminals. “He had always wanted to write death metal lyrics and had some really strange ideas,” Grewe said. “We bounced ideas off each other and used some of the vocal lines Michael had put in the demos. Most of the stuff Frank thought of was so weird and so eerie that it fit together great with the songs.” Pulling no punches, they wrote about war (“Fall of the Loyal Warrior”), cannibalism (“Island of Dead Men), serial killers (“Trophies,” “The Ultimate Sin”) and, of course, Satan (“Inner Sancticide,” “Desert of Doom”). “The lyrics had to be brutal to fit the vibe and sound of the music,” Poulsen says. “I love what Marc and Frank did. We wanted the lyrics to be dark, but also sarcastic, with a glimpse of irony.”

And so the question rises, did ASINHELL manage to pull it off in Impii Hora and make a good debut album? It is a great album! It’s raw, it’s heavy, it’s groovy, it’s catchy and stirs memories, bringing back memories of bands we love and continuing their legacy.  Beautiful guitar melodies and soulful vocals screaming the guts of our soul out. It’s one of my favorite albums to spin start to finish these days and I can’t wait to listen to it live.  Out September 29^th through Metal Blade.

Ξεκινώντας με το Destroyer Of Dreams, όταν πάτησα για πρώτη φορά το play, αμέσως με έπιασε το ογκώδες, έντονο, καταστροφικό σκοτάδι τους. Όταν ακούς ένα άλμπουμ περιμένεις να βρεις 5 ίσως έξι τραγούδια που θα σου αρέσουν αλλά καθώς περνούσαν τα τραγούδια βρέθηκα να παρασύρομαι εντελώς στον κόσμο του Godlike. Ο Chris “CJ” McMahon ξεπέρασε τον εαυτό του και εξερευνά όλο το εύρος της φωνητικής του ικανότητας παρέχοντας κορυφαία φωνητικά και πηγαίνοντας τα τραγούδια στο υψηλότερο επίπεδο που μπορούν να είναι. Κατά τη διάρκεια της πανδημίας οι κιθαρίστες του γκρουπ άφησαν κάτω τα όργανά τους για πρώτη φορά από τότε που ξεκίνησαν, με αποτέλεσμα ένα είδος αναγέννησης. “Ο Sean και εγώ δεν είχαμε καν πιάσει τις κιθάρες μας για δύο χρόνια”, εξηγεί ο Marsh. “Ήταν σκόπιμο. Η μυϊκή μνήμη… Όταν επιστρέψαμε, απελευθερώθηκαν τα πάντα. Τα χέρια πήγαν σε διαφορετικά μέρη από αυτά που είχαν συνηθίσει. Ήταν πιο εύκολο να βγούμε έξω από το πλαίσιο των THY ART IS MURDER. Προσπαθήσαμε να εξερευνήσουμε νέες διαστάσεις. Εξακολουθεί να είναι μέσα σε ένα συγκεκριμένο πυρήνα, αλλά πήγαμε σε κάποια νέα μέρη”. 

Τα νέα μέρη που εξερεύνησαν είναι πιο τεχνικά, μπορείς να ακούσεις επιρροές που εκτείνονται από τους GOJIRA μέχρι τους BEHEMOTH σε αυτό που περιγράφουν στο δελτίο τύπου τους ως blackened death metal και όσον αφορά τους στίχους, πυκνό σκοτάδι και καταστροφή για την τρέχουσα κοινωνική κατάσταση, που αποδίδεται εξαιρετικά σε λέξεις. Βρήκα τον εαυτό μου να ακούει τις σκέψεις μου για το πού βρίσκεται ο κόσμος σήμερα, πόσο ζοφερό είναι το μέλλον της ανθρωπότητας και του πλανήτη και πώς είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο να ονειρευτείς σε ένα τέτοιο περιβάλλον. Αν η θλίψη ήταν ένα τραγούδι θα ήταν το A Lesson In Pain.  Από πλευράς παραγωγής, ο κιθαρίστας του συγκροτήματος Andy Marsh σχολιάζει ότι, όπως και σε κάθε προηγούμενο άλμπουμ, “η ασυμφωνία στο μυαλό μου ανάμεσα σε αυτό που ακουγόμαστε και σε αυτό που φαντάζομαι ότι θα έπρεπε να ακουγόμαστε πλησιάζει όλο και περισσότερο”. 

Άκρως εθιστικό και εξαιρετικό στην ποικιλομορφία και το πάθος του το νέο άλμπουμ των THY ART IS MURDER, Godlike, είναι μια από τις καλύτερες κυκλοφορίες που θα ακούσετε το 2023 αλλά ίσως και μέσα στις δέκα καλύτερες κυκλοφορίες των τελευταίων 5 ετών. Δεν μπορώ να αρχίσω να εξηγώ πόσο αγαπώ τον τρόπο με τον οποίο εκφράζονται οι απογοητεύσεις μου, η καταθλιπτική μου ανησυχία και η θλίψη μου μέσα από αυτό το εξαγριωμένο αριστούργημα. Αρκεί να το ακούσετε και θα διαπιστώσετε ότι αν το τέλος του κόσμου είχε soundtrack, αυτό θα ήταν Godlike.

Join me in …. congratulating THY ART IS MURDER, cause if we can say that when something is brilliant it is as if made by a god then Godlike is trully what the title suggests, divine! Godlike is the first release of the Australian band out independently and it is maybe their best album up to date.

Kicking off with Destroyer Of Dreams when I first pressed play I immediately was caught in their massive, intense, destructive darkness. When you listen to an album you expect to find 5 maybe six songs you enjoy but as the songs went by I found myself totally drawn in to Godlike’s world. Chris “CJ” McMahon outdid himself and explores the entire span of his vocal ability delivering top notch vocals and taking the songs on the highest level they can be. During the pandemic the group’s guitar players put down their instruments for the first time since they started, resulting in a type of rebirth. “Sean and I didn’t even pick up our guitars for two years,” Marsh explains. “It was deliberate. The muscle memory… When we came back, it freed everything up. The hands went to different places than they were used to going. It was easier to get outside of the box of THY ART IS MURDER. We tried to explore new dimensions. It’s still within a tight paradigm, but we went to some new places.” 

The new places they explored are more technical, you can listen to influences spanning from GOJIRA to BEHEMOTH in what they describe in their press release as blackened death metal and as far as the lyrics are concerned, pitch black darkness and devastation on the current social status, put brilliantly into words. I found myself listening to my thoughts on where the world is today, how bleak the future of mankind and the planet is and how it is almost impossible to dream in such a surrounding. If sorrow was a song it would be A Lesson In Pain.  Production wise, the band’s guitarist Andy Marsh comments that, as with every album prior, “The dissonance in my mind between what we sound like and what I imagine we should sound like gets closer together.” 

Highly addictive and extraordinary in its diversity and passion the new album of THY ART IS MURDER, Godlike, is one of the best releases you will listen in 2023 but maybe in the top ten releases of the last 5 years. I can’t begin to explain how much I love the way my frustrations, my depressive anguish and my sorrow is expressed through this fierce masterpiece. Just listen to it and you’ll find out that if the end of the world had a soundtrack, it would be Godlike.

Υπάρχει αρκετή επαναληψιμότητα ως προς την γενική ατμόσφαιρα,κάτι που ίσως να γίνεται εντονότερο από το γεγονός πως οι συνθέσεις είναι σε γενικές γραμμές “άδειες”, βασισμένες πάνω στην παρουσία του πιάνου και των διάφορων synths, με σπανιότερη την εμφάνιση κάποιου ρυθμικού οργάνου. Έχοντας πει αυτό βέβαια, θα πρέπει να τονίσω πως επ ουδενί δεν έχουμε να κάνουμε με κακές συνθέσεις. O Vikram είναι ένας εκπληκτικός μουσικός και συνθέτης. Απλά αντιλαμβάνεστε πως μία κάποια αίσθηση “στασιμότητας” είναι αναπόφευκτη.

Κάτι ακόμα που γίνεται αντιληπτό είναι πως ο Tom Englund έχει περιοριστεί πολύ σε ένα συγκεκριμένο φωνητικό μοτίβο, τόσο τονικά όσο και μελωδικά, ένα μοτίβο το οποίο είναι κοινό σε όλα του τα συγκροτήματα. Φυσικά, δεν χωράει αμφιβολία για το πόσο ευαισθησία κρύβεται στην φωνή του, ούτε το πόσο αποτελεσματικά καταφέρνει να σε πάρει μαζί του, αλλά στο τέλος της ημέρας, δυστυχώς ακούγεται παντού ίδιος σε όλα. Έχει χαθεί  το που ξεκινάν οι EVERGREY  και που σταματούν οι SILENT SKIES, πραγματικά , πολλά από τα κομμάτια τα οποία κοσμούν το Dormant θα μπορούσαν με μεγάλη άνεση να περιλαμβάνονται σε κάποια από τις τελευταίες κυκλοφορίες των EVERGREY.

Συνοψίζοντας και προσπαθώντας να βάλω σε μια σειρά τις σκέψεις μου, το Dormant δεν είναι κακός δίσκος. Περιλαμβάνει πολύ όμορφες συνθέσεις όπως τα New Life και Tides που όμως μετά την γενική ακρόαση νομίζω ότι σε χάνουν στο σύνολο τους. Μάλλον αδιάφορες θα συμπληρώσω οι 3 διασκευές στα The Trooper, Dancing In The Dark και Numb των IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Springsteen και LINKIN PARK αντίστοιχα, με την πρώτη δε να είναι ανούσια. Τους στίχους μάλλον δεν τους διάβασε ποτέ κανείς. Αυτό που σου μένει είναι η ατμόσφαιρα στο εν τέλη. Αν σου κάνει έχει καλώς, αν πάλι όχι, δεν τρέχει και τίποτα.

I have to admit that this particular assignment has given me a lot of trouble. Because SILENT SKIES musically the most “correct” term to describe the band is pop, melancholic but pop. And indeed, if there is something that fully encloses Dormant is melancholy. Not the one that throws you into the deepest and most difficult depths, but the one that allows you to travel, to enjoy this sweet occasional feeling, especially as the weather gets colder.

There is repetitiveness in terms of the general atmosphere, something that is perhaps made more intense by the fact that the compositions are generally “empty”, based on the presence of the piano and the various synths, with the rare appearance of a rhythmic instrument. Having said that, of course, I must stress that we are by no means dealing with bad compositions. Vikram is an exceptional musician and composer. You just realize that a certain sense of “stagnation” is unavoidable.

Something else that becomes apparent is that  Tom Englund has become “trapped” into a certain vocal pattern, both tonally and melodically, a pattern that he now carries in all his projects.  Of course, there’s no doubting the sensitivity hidden in his voice, nor how effectively he manages to carry you along, but at the end of the day, unfortunately, he sounds the same everywhere in everything. It’s also the boundary’s that are lost, where EVERGREY starts and where SILENT SKIES stops, really, many of the tracks that adorn Dormant could very easily be included on one of EVERGREY‘s latest releases.

Summing up and trying to put my thoughts in order, Dormant is not a bad album. It includes very beautiful compositions like New Life and Tides but after a general listen I think they lose you as a whole. As far as the  3 covers on The Trooper, Dancing In The Dark and Numb by IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Springsteen and LINKIN PARK respectively, they sound kind of unnecessary. The lyrics were probably never read by anyone. What you are left with in the end of Dormant is the atmosphere. If that is ok with and for you, all good, if it’s not…

Το War of Being είναι ένα 60-λεπτο συναρπαστικό και πολυδιάστατο ταξίδι στον ιδιαίτερο μουσικό κόσμο των Tesseract. Η πρώτη αίσθηση που μου αφήνει το War of Being είναι ότι είναι ένας συνδυασμός όλων των μουσικών στοιχείων που μας έχουν προσφέρει οι Tesseract στο παρελθόν, υπέροχα συνδυασμένα σ’ ένα άλμπουμ. Έχουμε underground djent με άφθονα ambient στοιχεία, τεχνικό metal και μια πλήρη progressive κατεύθυνση σε συνδυασμό με όμορφα δουλεμένες μελωδικές υφές. 

Η σύνθεση των τραγουδιών στο War of Being είναι ολοκληρωμένη και εκλεπτυσμένη όπως θα περίμενε κανείς από μια μπάντα του βεληνεκούς των Tesseract. Το άλμπουμ είναι ναι μεν τεχνικά πολύπλοκο και βαθύ, και γίνεται όλο και καλύτερο με κάθε ακρόαση, αλλά ταυτόχρονα είναι πολύ φιλικό και εύκολο στο άκουσμα, μία ισορροπία που είναι πολύ δύσκολο να διατηρηθεί όταν μιλάμε για το συγκεκριμένο metal είδος. 

Κάθε τραγούδι εδώ έχει τη δική του προσωπικότητα και διαδέχεται το επόμενο τόσο όμορφα δημιουργώντας ένα ταξίδι που ανοίγει το μυαλό σε εκπληκτικά ηχοτοπία που κόβουν την ανάσα. Τα Burden και Sacrifice σίγουρα θα μπουν στη λίστα μου με τα πιο όμορφα τραγούδια που έχουν γράψει ποτέ, το καθένα για διαφορετικούς λόγους, κλείνοντας έτσι ένα πολύ δυνατό και μεστό War of Being. 

Οι Tesseract συνεχίζουν να εντυπωσιάζουν και να ελίσσονται σε ένα πολύ δύσκολο μουσικό έδαφος με χαρακτηριστική ευκολία, με το War of Being να είναι μία πολύ δυνατή προσθήκη στην μέχρι τώρα ακαταμάχητη μουσική συλλογή τους,περικλείοντας όλα τα μουσικά στοιχεία και τα ειλικρινή συναισθήματα που μας έχουν προσφέρει από την αρχή της καριέρας τους. Αν είστε φαν αυτού του ήχου, τότε το War of Being είναι ένα αριστούργημα για την συλλογή σας.

This five-piece crew from Milton Keynes (UK) has already established itself as a giant in the progressive djent scene. If you listen to all of Tesseract’s creations since their 2010 EP Concealing Fate, you’ll understand that they never disappoint. They haven’t put out a single non-good album so far, and that raises the bar pretty high on what to expect from their 5th full studio album War of Being, released September 15th from Kscope.  

War of Being is a 60-minute long fascinating and multi-dimensional journey into Tesseract’s unique musical world. My first takeaway from War of Being was that it is a combination of all the musical elements that Tesseract have offered us in the past, beautifully combined into one album. We get underground djent with plenty of ambient elements, technical metal and a full progressive direction combined with beautifully crafted melodic layers.  

The song writing on War of Being is complete and refined as you would expect from a band of Tesseract’s magnitude. The album is indeed technically complex and deep, and it gets better and better with every spin, but at the same time it is very friendly and easy to listen to, a balance that is very difficult to maintain when it comes to this particular metal genre. Don’t get me wrong, it captivates your full attention, as magnetising as it is.

Each song here has its own personality and flows into the next so beautifully, creating a mind opening journey of magical and atmospheric soundscapes. Burden and Sacrifice will definitely go on my list of the most beautiful songs ever written from Tesseract, each for different reasons, thus closing out a very powerful and sincere War of Being. 

Tesseract continue to impress and navigate through a very difficult musical terrain with remarkable ease, with War of Being being a very strong addition to their so far irresistible music collection, encapsulating all the musical elements and heartfelt emotions that they have offered us since the beginning of their career. If you’re a fan of this sound, then War of Being is masterpiece for your collection.

Το A Sign Of Things To Come διαρκεί περίπου τρία τέταρτα της ώρας και ένα μεγάλο μέρος του, είναι ένα ταξίδι σε ως τώρα αχαρτογράφητο ηχητικό έδαφος για τους Sylosis. Η ωμή δύναμη και τα καταιγιστικά riffs, που δημιουργούν τον χαρακτηριστικό Sylosis ήχο είναι το κύριο συστατικό του δίσκου, αλλά σίγουρα υπάρχει μια άλλου είδους ατμόσφαιρα και απόχρωση καθ’όλη τη διάρκεια του. 

Πολύ όμορφος και ισορροπημένος ήχος, με riffs που σπάνε κόκκαλα, ατμοσφαιρικές μελωδίες και καθαρά περάσματα να αναδεικνύονται υπέροχα το ένα δίπλα και μέσα απ’ το άλλο. Αρκετοί death και metalcore ήχοι, και ίσως λιγότερο thrash-infused ήχοι απ’ ότι θα περιμέναμε. Το A Sign Of Things To Come περιέχει μία ποικιλομορφία που μπορεί να ξενίσει κάποιους αρχικά αλλά η ακαταμάχητη μουσική σφραγίδα του Josh Middleton είναι παρούσα και ο χαρακτηριστικός ήχος των Sylosis παραμένει αναλλοίωτος. 

Φωνητικά το βρήκα το εξαιρετικό, με την επιδέξια, ωμή και ιδιαίτερη χροιά του Josh Middleton να εγκαθίστανται κατευθείαν στον εγκέφαλό σου. Οι Ali Richardson (drums) και  Conor Marshall (bass) χορεύουν εναρμονισμένα, κρατώντας το rhythm section σε πολύ υψηλά επίπεδα και χαρίζοντας ένα groove που αποκλείεται να σε αφήσει ακίνητο. Η κιθαριστική δουλειά από τους Alex Bailey και Josh Middleton είναι φυσικά καταιγιστική με παχιά και bone-breaking riffs αλλά και με μελωδίες που θα σε πλημμυρίσουν συναισθήματα. 

Το Absent είναι η έκπληξη του A Sign Of Things To Come, τοποθετώντας την εξέλιξη στον ήχο τους στο επίκεντρο. Ένα κυκλοθυμικό, ατμοσφαιρικό και μελωδικό κομμάτι που κρατάει τα πράγματα διακριτικά για λίγα λεπτά, πριν εκραγεί σε έναν μεγαλειώδες κομμάτι που ίσως να μην περίμενες να ακούσεις από τους Sylosis. 

Το A Sign Of Things To Come είναι σίγουρα η γέφυρα μεταξύ του παρελθόντος και του μέλλοντος των Sylosis, διατηρώντας την ξεχωριστή μουσική τους ταυτότητα αλλά προσφέροντας και μία αναζωογονημένη μουσική φόρμουλα για την μπάντα. 

Οι Sylosis είναι μία ανεξάντλητη πηγή μουσικών δυνατοτήτων και πραγματικά ελπίζω το A Sign Of Things To Come να είναι κυριολεκτικά ένας καλός οιωνός αυτών που έρχονται και να εισπράξει την αγάπη που του αξίζει.

Sylosis need very few, if any I hope, introductions. With Josh Middleton being the only remaining original member of the band on September 8, 2023 Sylosis release their 6th full-studio album A Sign Of Things To Come (Nuclear Blast Records).  

A Sign Of Things To Come is about three quarters of an hour of music and it’s a journey into previously uncharted sonic territory for Sylosis. Of course we have the raw power and thunderous riffs that create the signature Sylosis sound, but there’s definitely a different kind of atmosphere and hue throughout the album. 

A very beautiful and balanced sound, with bone-crushing riffs, atmospheric melodies and clean passages that are beautifully showcased next to and through each other. Several death and metalcore sounds, and maybe less thrash-infused sounds than we would expect. A Sign Of Things To Come contains a diversity that may alienate some at first but the irresistible musical stamp of Josh Middleton is present, as the characteristic Sylosis sound remains unchanged.

Vocally I found it excellent, with Josh Middleton’s slick, raw and distinctive tone settling straight into your brain. Ali Richardson (drums) and Conor Marshall (bass) dance in harmony, keeping the rhythm section at a very high level and giving you a groove that is impossible to leave you motionless. The guitar work from Alex Bailey and Josh Middleton is of course thunderous with thick and bone-breaking riffs but also with melodies that will flood you with emotions.  

The track Absent was for me the surprise of A Sign Of Things To Come, placing the evolution in their sound at the heart of it. A moody, atmospheric and melodic track that keeps things subtle for a few minutes before exploding into a sublime track that you might not expect to hear from Sylosis.  

A Sign Of Things To Come is definitely the bridge between Sylosis’ s past and future, maintaining their distinct musical identity but also offering a refreshed musical formula for the band. Sylosis is an inexhaustible source of musical possibilities and I truly hope A Sign Of Things To Come is literally a good omen of things to come and that it will receive the love it deserves.

Το κομμάτι είναι ένα τέλειο μείγμα αυτής της συνταγής punk, metal και thrash που αποτελεί τον χαρακτηριστικό ήχο των PRONG και δείχνει ότι ο Tommy Victor και τα παιδιά είναι προετοιμασμένοι και έτοιμοι να σκίσουν μερικά πρόσωπα με το “State Of Emergency“. Ο Victor σχολιάζει: “Ο Tommy Tommy είναι ο πρώτος που θα καταφέρει να βγάλει το τραγούδι από το δίσκο: “‘The Descent’ έχει μια αφήγηση της απομόνωσης, της σύγχυσης και της απελπισίας λόγω της παρέμβασης των μέσων μαζικής ενημέρωσης”.

Η κερδισμένη εμπειρία του να έχει καθίσει στην πρώτη γραμμή της heavy metal σκηνής στις ΗΠΑ και σε όλο τον κόσμο για πολλές δεκαετίες τώρα, έχει δώσει στον frontman Tommy Victor και την μπάντα την προνοητικότητα να ξέρουν τι μέλλει γενέσθαι, και να και να συνεχίσουν να βγάζουν αυτή την άψογη συνταγή από punk, metal, post-punk noise, doom, blues και thrash που συνθέτει τον ήχο των PRONG.

PRONG‘s thirteenth studio album, “State Of Emergency”, will arrive on October 6 via Steamhammer/SPV. The official music video for the LP’s third single, “The Descent”, can be seen below.

The track is a perfect blend of that impeccable recipe of punk, metal and thrash that makes up PRONG‘s signature sound, and shows Tommy Victor and the boys are primed and ready to tear some faces off with “State Of Emergency”.

Victor comments: “‘The Descent’ has a narrative of isolation, confusion, and hopelessness due to the intervention of media.”

The earned experience of having sat at the forefront of the heavy metal scene in the U.S. and around the world for many decades now has given frontman Tommy Victor and the band the foresight to know what’s ahead, and to and to keep churning out that impeccable recipe of punk, metal, post-punk noise, doom, blues and thrash that makes up PRONG‘s sound.

“State Of Emergency” is a furious tableau of East Coast aggression, enveloped in that classic PRONG sound that never goes out of style.

Στο “Memorial” οι SOEN συνεχίζουν από εκεί που σταμάτησαν με το «Imperial» αλλά έχουν αναπτυχθεί προς δύο αντίθετες πλευρές. Η πρώτη είναι μια πιο άγρια με αιχμηρά κιθαριστικά riffs και τύμπανα σε πιο πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο και η δεύτερη είναι λιγότερο βαριά με τη δομή των τραγουδιών να είναι πιο προβλέψιμη και έτσι πιο “προσβάσιμη” για ένα μεγαλύτερο τύπο κοινού. Ωστόσο, αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι εγκαταλείπουν τα progressive στοιχεία τους τα οποία κρατάει και αποδίδει κυρίως ο εκπληκτικός Martin Lopez του οποίου το drumming βρίσκεται στην πρώτη γραμμή της παραγωγής. Καιρός ήταν, αν με ρωτάτε! Ήταν τόσο κρίμα να ακούω τη μπάντα ζωντανά και να συνειδητοποιήω ότι ακούγονται καλύτερα ζωντανά απ’ ό,τι στις δουλειές τους στο στούντιο. Συνεχίζουν στο μοντέρνο ύφος που είχαν στο Imperial και το πάνε ένα βήμα μπροστά με πιο διαφορετικές ιδέες που επεκτείνονται μέχρι στις Pink Floydικές επιρροές όπως το Vitals. Το άλμπουμ περιλαμβάνει επίσης μια guest εμφάνιση της Elisa στο Hollowed.  

Οι SOEN είναι κάτι μεταξύ ενός κύματος οργής που έρχεται συντριπτικά στην ακτή και πλημμυρίζει τα πάντα και ενός κύματος θλίψης που φτάνει μέχρι το λαιμό σου και κάνει τα μάτια σου να δακρύζουν και είναι αυτή η οξύμωρη μοναδική ποιότητα που τους κάνει να ξεχωρίζουν. Κάθε άλμπουμ είναι ένα νέο συναισθηματικό ταξίδι και μην χάσετε ποτέ την ευκαιρία να τους δείτε ζωντανά αν παίζουν κάπου στην πόλη, χώρα σας. Ευχαριστήστε με αργότερα.

SOEN is the type of unique kind of band that can reach through music fans in between genres and not only grab their attention but also make them fans. In my opinion what makes them stand out from the moment you listen to them is the amazing color in Joel’s voice which can deliver both emotion and technique without compromising either one of the two elements.

In “Memorial” SOEN are picking up from where Imperial left off but has grown towards two opposing sides. The first is a fiercer with edgy guitar riffs and drums in a more eminent role and the second one is a less heavy one with the structure of the songs being more foreseeable and thus “accessible” for a larger type of audience. However, this doesn’t mean they abandon their progressive shapes which are mostly held and delivered by the amazing Martin Lopez whose drumming is in the forefront of the production. It was about time if you ask me! It was such a shame listening to the band live and realizing they sound better live than they do in their studio work. They carry on in the modern style they had in Imperial and they take it a step forward with more diverse ideas expanding to the ends of Pink Floydish influences like Vitals. The album features also a guest appearance by Elisa in Hollowed.

SOEN is something between a wave of rage that comes crushing to the shore and floods everything and a wave of sorrow that comes up to your neck and makes your eyes tear up and it is that oxymorous unique quality that makes them stand out. Each album is a new emotional journey and never miss out on the chance to seen them live if they are playing somewhere around your town, country. Thank me later.

Για ακόμη μία φορά λοιπόν το σύγχρονο metal μουσικό μείγμα των Orbit Culture είναι καλοδουλεμένο και εξαιρετικά εκτελεσμένο. Oι Orbit Culture χτυπάνε bullseye, ακούγονται δεμένοι και στοχευμένοι και καταφέρνουν να παραδώσουν ένα επιβλητικό Descent, διάρκειας 50 σχεδόν λεπτών, με αρκετά δυνατά τραγούδια.

Και λέω αρκετά γιατί σίγουρα δεν ήταν όλα τα τραγούδια εξίσου μαγνητικά, στην δική μου περίπτωση τουλάχιστον. Και σίγουρα αυτό δεν ήταν λόγω σύνθεσης αλλά περισσότερο λόγω παραγωγής μάλλον. Ταπείνη μου γνώμη πως σε κάποια κομμάτια του δίσκου όλοι οι ήχοι είναι παρόντες στην ίδια εμβέλεια και πυκνότητα, με αποτέλεσμα να μου ακούγονται όλα απλά too much.

Τραγούδια που ξεχωρίζουν για εμένα είναι το Sorrower με εξαιρετικές κιθάρες και ένα κομμάτι που σε κάνει απλά να χαμογελάς από ικανοποίηση, το καλύτερο για εμένα κομμάτι του Descent. Όπως επίσης και τo Undercity, το progressive-like From The Inside και το The Aisle Of Fire, τα οποία είναι απλά συμπαγείς μπάλες κατεδάφισης.

Όσοι γνωρίζουν τους Orbit Culture ήδη, αλλά και όχι μόνο, σίγουρα θα μείνουν ευχαριστημένοι με το Descent που νομίζω πως συνεχίζει από εκεί που μας άφησε το Nija του 2020. Δυναμικοί, ενεργητικοί, με αρκετό χορταστικό περιεχόμενο, πλούσιες συνθέσεις και πολύχρωμες μελωδίες , οι Orbit Culture μας δείχνουν ότι είναι σε εξαιρετική φόρμα και μας χαρίζουν ένα δυναμικό και καλοδουλεμένο Descent που σίγουρα θα τους ανεβάσει στο επόμενο σκαλοπάτι της καριέρας τους.

Orbit Culture are known in the metal scene since 2013. After several line-up changes, they came to shake things up with their amazing album Nija (2020) and their latest EP, entitled Shaman (2021). Melodic death metal with dark groove and metalcore doses of extremely high quality, were the main sounds that Orbit Culture gave us over the last 3 years and now I’m curious to see if and how the four-piece Swedish band will evolve their sound in their latest album Descent, which was released on August 18 via Seek & Strike records.

In a nutshell Orbit Culture’s modern metal music mix is well crafted and superbly executed and they do hit bullseye once again, as they sound cohesive and focused, and they manage to deliver a dominating Descent, which lasts almost 50 minutes long and it is filled with several powerful songs.

However, not all the songs were equally magnetic during the Descent, not in my case at least. And certainly, this wasn’t due to composition or performance issues, but I think it was mostly a production issue. It’s my humble opinion that in couple tracks of the album all sounds are present at the same depth and density, and they just sounded too much to me.

Songs, though, that stand out for me are the Sorrower, with excellent guitars; a track that just makes you smile with satisfaction, and for me the best track of Descent, as well as the Undercity, the progressive-like From the Inside and The Aisle of Fire, which sound like solid wrecking balls.

Those who know Orbit Culture already, but not only, will surely be pleased with Descent as, I believe, it continues from where Nija (2020) left us. Dynamic, energetic, with plenty of satisfying content, rich compositions and colourful melodies, Orbit Culture show us that they are in great shape and give us a powerful and well-crafted Descent that will surely help them climb onto the next step of their career.

Δεν εγκαταλείπουν βέβαια την “comfort zone” τους, αλλά επιστρέφουν στον ήχο που τους έκανε το συγκρότημα που αγαπούν οι οπαδοί τους. Ωμά, γρήγορα, κοφτερά riffs και εκρηκτικό drumming σηματοδοτούν τον ήχο του Goliath και τον κάνουν να ταιριάζει απόλυτα με μια γερή δόση αδρεναλίνης, ακριβώς το είδος που χρειάζεσαι για να ανεβάσεις πίεση.

Δημιουργημένοι το 1992 στο Μόντρεαλ του Κεμπέκ του Καναδά, οι KATAKLYSM κυκλοφορούν το 15ο στούντιο άλμπουμ τους και παραμένουν επίκαιροι σαν να μην έχουν περάσει 30 χρόνια από τότε που ξεκίνησαν. Σε παραγωγή του François Dagenais, με τον Colin Richardson (Carcass, Machine Head, Overkill, Trivium, κ.α.), ο ήχος είναι μοντέρνος και heavy, διατηρώντας παράλληλα την ωμότητα που χαρακτηρίζει το στυλ-σήμα κατατεθέν τους. Το artwork έγινε από τον Eliran Kantor (Kreator, Helloween, Testament μεταξύ άλλων).

Οπότε, για να τα συνοψίσουμε όλα και να φτάσουμε στην ουσία, μου αρέσει το Goliath; Το συνιστώ; Η ταχύτητα και τα εκρηκτικά ξεσπάσματα σε συνδυασμό με τα groove, mid tempo μελωδικά μέρη θυμίζουν τους παλιούς καλούς KATAKLYSM. Η παραγωγή είναι εξαίσια αλλά δεν είναι τόσο βίαιη όσο οι πρώτες τους κυκλοφορίες. Παρόλα αυτά έχει πολλά σημεία μέσα του, και σε μια συνολική εκτίμηση είναι ένας καλός δίσκος – κατά τη γνώμη μου καλύτερος από το Unconquered.

Back to basics! That was the first thought that popped into mind when I started listening to KATAKLYSM’s new album “Goliath” out now on Nuclear Blast Records. The Canadian death metallers have been silent since 2020’s “Unconquered”.  Three weeks before the album’s release, the band announced drummer Oli Beaudoin had left the band and was replaced by James Payne, and the difference is quite notable. So “Goliath” is the first release with their new line up and it is refreshingly brutal and it reminds us of the blasting fast sound that made us like them in the first place.

They are not stepping out of their “comfort-zone” but they are returning to the sound that made them the band their fans love. Raw, fast, sharp riffs and blasting drumming marks the sound of Goliath and makes it a perfect fit to a heavy dose of adrenaline, just the kind you need to get your blood pumping.

Born in 1992 in Montreal, Québec, Canada, KATAKLYSM are offering their 15^th studio album and they remain current like it’s not been 30 years since they started. Self-produced by François Dagenais, with Colin Richardson (Carcass, Machine Head, Overkill, Trivium, etc), the sound is modern and heavy while maintaining a rawness that marks their trademark style. The artwork was done by Eliran Kantor (Kreator, Helloween, Testament among others).

So, to sum it all up and get to the bottom line, do I like Goliath? Do I recommend it? The speed and the exploding outbursts combined with groove, mid tempo melodic parts remind us of the good old KATAKLYSM. The production is exquisite yet it is not as violent as their early releases. However it has many parts in it, and in an overall view it is a good album – in my opinion better than Unconquered.

Σάββατο 29 Ιουλίου, headliners στο Chania Rock Festival, θα είναι ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα, διαχρονικά, σχήματα του ελληνικού κοινού. Οι PARADISE LOST!!! Οι αδιαφιλονίκητοι βασιλιάδες του σκοτεινού, gothic metal, ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά σχήματα της μουσικής που ξεπήδησε από τα 90s. Ένα καλλιτεχνικά ανήσυχο γκρουπ που έχει βγάλει μία σειρά από μαγικούς δίσκους, που δεν φοβήθηκε ποτέ να πειραματιστεί, να φτάσει τον ήχο του όσο πιο μακριά γίνεται, αλλά και να επιστρέψει στις ρίζες του, δημιουργώντας πάντα τάσεις, χωρίς να τις ακολουθεί.

15 χρόνια μετά την αλησμόνητη εμφάνισή τους στο Chania Rock Festival, ο Nick Holmes, ο Greg Mackintosh και η υπόλοιπη παρέα από το Halifax της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας, επιστρέφουν να υπενθυμίσουν για ποιον λόγο θεωρούνται ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα και σημαντικότερα σχήματα των τελευταίων 30 ετών στη σκληρή μουσική. Από τον αρχέτυπο doom/death ήχο του “Gothic”, στα μνημειώδη “Icon” και “Draconian times”, από το πιο πειραματικό “One second”, μέχρι το ηλεκτρονικό “Host” και από το crossover “Symbol of life” μέχρι το σκοτάδι του “In requiem” και την επιστροφή στις ρίζες που έχουν επιχειρήσει τα τελευταία χρόνια, οι PARADISE LOST ξαφνιάζουν, ρισκάρουν, καινοτομούν, κερδίζουν νέους οπαδούς και δημιουργούν άλμπουμ που αποτελούν σημεία αναφοράς στον σκληρό ήχο.

Στην ιστορία της μουσικής, δεν έχει υπάρξει συγκρότημα που να έχει μπορέσει να συνδυάσει τις gothic/darkwave με τις classic metal καταβολές, τόσο αρμονικά και σε τόσο μεγάλη χρονική διάρκεια, δημιουργώντας διαχρονικές επιτυχίες όπως το “Say just words”, το “True belief”, το “The last time”, το “Erased” και τόσα άλλα. Αυτά κι ακόμα περισσότερα, θα έχουμε την ευκαιρία να ακούσουμε στο Θέατρο Ανατολικής Τάφρου στα Χανιά, το Σάββατο 29 Ιουλίου.

Όπως εύκολα μπορεί να καταλάβει κανείς, για μία ακόμη χρονιά… Και φέτος μόνο Κρήτη και φέτος μόνο Χανιά!
