Από το μακρινό αυτό 2013 βέβαια έχουν γίνει κάμποσα πράγματα, έξτρα ξεκατινιάσματα, αποχωρήσεις, μηνύσεις και άλλα τέτοια καλούδια, αλλά και ακόμα 3 album, το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Με αποκορύφωμα, κατά την γνώμη του υπογράφοντα πάντα, την προηγούμενη δουλειά του σχήματος, το εκπληκτικό The Verdict, το οποίο και αποτελεί το στολίδι αυτής της μορφής των QUEENSRYCHE, αυτής της αναγέννησης. Η μπάντα λοιπόν δεν έχασε χρόνο, μιας και τα πάει περίφημα, συνεχίζει στον ίδιο ρυθμό και ως αποτέλεσμα, εγένετο το Digital Noise Alliance. Θα μπορούσα να περιοριστώ στην μιάμιση παράγραφο για να περιγράψω αυτό το νέο τους δισκογραφικό βήμα και αυτό όχι γιατί είναι τόσο καλό ή τόσο κακό, αλλά επειδή είναι φοβερά ξεκάθαρο.

Το Digital Noise Alliance, δυστυχώς έτυχε να κυκλοφορήσει μετά το εκπληκτικό The Verdict όπως προανέφερα και αυτό του στερεί από μόνο του πολλά. Αυτό που θα μπορούσε να είναι η συνέχεια και η “τελειοποίηση” του προκατόχου του, ακούγεται περισσότερο σαν prequel, σαν ένα βήμα πίσω, σαν τα “δομικά υλικά” πάνω στα οποία χτίστηκε ο προκάτοχος. Είναι κακό αυτό; Για κανένα λόγο, απλά είναι παράδοξο και καθιστά τον δίσκο “θύμα” των  περιστάσεων. Η συνολική ατμόσφαιρα του album είναι πάρα πολύ καλά δομημένη, με μια περίεργη νοσταλγία και εσωστρέφεια να έχει βρει τον τρόπο να περάσει σε κάθε κομμάτι. Τα κομμάτια βρίθουν μελωδιών όπως βρίθουν χαρακτηριστικών αρμονιών και δισολιών, την ταυτότητα σε μεγάλο βαθμό δηλαδή της μπάντας. Συμαζεμένη και μετρημένη prog-α όπως μόνο αυτοί ξέρουν να κάνουν και, συγνώμη που θα το θέσω τόσο απόλυτα, τον ουσιαστικό “βασιλιά” αυτού του δίσκου, τον La Torre. Η απόδοση του όπως και οι ερμηνείες του είναι μοναδικές. Έχει μεστώσει η φωνή του, πλέον έχει βαθύνει, έχει βρει πλήρως την ταυτότητα του. Τεράστια φωνή, frontman με κάθε έννοια και ουσία. Κάτι που δεν μπορώ να πω ακόμα για τον κατά τα άλλα αξιότατο Casey Grillo, που κάνει και το δισκογραφικό του ντεμπούτο με τους Ryche, κάπως μουδιασμένος ακόμα και “διεκπεραιωτικός”.

Όλη η μπάντα αναπνέει άψογα, κινείται συνολικά, με συνοχή και κοινή πλέον πορεία, και τους πάει, πολύ. Το Digital Noise Alliance μας συστήνεται με το καλημέρα, όπως αρχίζει έτσι κλείνει κιόλας, με την ίδια υφή και ταυτότητα, δεν έχει εκπλήξεις, δεν είναι όμως και μονότονος. Σίγουρα έχει τις δυνατές του στιγμές, αδιαμφισβήτητα και τα διαμάντια του. Τα Chapters, Lost In Sorrow και Behind The Wall  να αποτελούν instant repeat, με το δεύτερο δε να είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα τους κομμάτια εδώ και 2 δεκαετίες.  Δεν θα μπορούσα να αφήσω απέξω το κομμάτι που ουσιαστικά κλείνει τον δίσκο, το Tormentum, για το οποίο θα αρκεστώ να πω πως, πολλοί κλαίνε προκειμένου να μπορέσουν ή να μπουρούσαν γενικά να γράφουν έτσι. Την διασκευή στο Rebel Yell θα μου επιτρέψετε να μην την σχολιάσω καθόλου, δεν υπάρχει λόγος, κάτι που ισχύει και για την διασκευή.

Τι λείπει λοιπόν; Μα τα μεγάλα και ανατριχιαστικά refren, οι κιθαριστικές μελωδίες που θα σου σφυνοθούν στο κεφάλι για πάντα. Το Digital Noise Alliance αποτελεί έναν καλό δίσκο, με ώριμη ατμόσφαιρα και songwriting, όχι όμως ένα σπουδαίο δίσκο. Καλά μπροστά βέβαια στον απύθμενο πάτο που είχαν φτάσει, το λες και αριστούργημα.

QUEENSRYCHE, in the last 10 years, are a great example of rebirth from one’s ashes. A great example, that all that is needed sometimes is someone to take the wheel, a “frontman” who knows what he is doing, who has an essential vision. And this has actually been noticed from the first moment Todd La Torre set foot in the band. Yes, from that self-titled restart back in 2013, it became clear that no matter how low you fall, there is a way back.

Since then, of course, a lot of things have happened, extra drama, departures, lawsuits and other goodies like that, but also 3 albums, one better than the other. With highlight, in the opinion of the one writing these lines, the previous album, the amazing The Verdict, which is the crown jewel of this form of QUEENSRYCHE, of this renaissance. So the band wasted no time, since they are doing great so far, they continue at the same pace and as a result, Digital Noise Alliance was born. I could limit myself to a paragraph and a half to describe this new record and that’s not because it’s so good or so bad, but because it’s awesomely clear as to what it is.

Digital Noise Alliance unfortunately happened to be released after the amazing The Verdict as I mentioned above and that in itself takes a lot away from it. What could be a continuation, the “perfection” of its predecessor, sounds more like a prequel, like a step back, like the “building materials” on which the predecessor was built. Is this something bad? For no reason at all, it’s just a paradox and makes the record a “victim” of circumstances. The overall atmosphere of the album is very well structured, with a strange nostalgia and introspection that has found its way into every track. The tracks are full of melodies as they are full of distinct harmonies and double lead guitars, the band’s identity to a large extent. Well controlled prog elements, as much as needed, as only they know how to do and, sorry to put it in such absolution, the essential “king” of this record, La Torre. His performance as well as his warmth are unique. His voice has softened, it has deepened in a way, he has fully found his identity. Huge voice, a frontman in every sense and essence. Something I can’t say yet about the otherwise excellent Casey Grillo behind the drums, who also makes his debut with Ryche in this record, somewhat numb and even “holding back” is the feeling I got.

The whole band breathes flawlessly, moves as a whole, with cohesion and now a common course, and they are doing great. Digital Noise Alliance introduced itself  to us from the start, as it begins, it also ends, with the same texture, feel and identity, it has no surprises, but it is not monotonous either. It certainly has its strong moments, undeniably its gems. Chapters, Lost In Sorrow and Behind The Wall are instant repeats, with the second one being one of their best tracks in 2 decades. I couldn’t leave out the track that essentially closes the album, Tormentum, for which I’ll suffice to say that many people would give everything  in order to be able to write like that. As for the cover of Rebel Yell, you will allow me not to comment on it at all, there is no reason, which also applies to the cover.

So what’s missing? But the big and great choruses, the guitar melodies that stuck in your head forever. Digital Noise Alliance is a good record, with mature atmosphere and songwriting, but not a great record. Well ahead of course of the bottom they had reached in the past, you can easily call it a masterpiece.

Σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία οι WOLFHEART χρησιμοποιούν 3 τραγουδιστές και έχουν δύο guest εμφανίσεις και οι δύο είναι εξαιρετικοί στο είδος τους. Τα φωνητικά μοιράζονται μεταξύ Tuomas, Vangelis και Lauri με τον τρόπο που εξυπηρετούν καλύτερα τα τραγούδια. Ο Karl Sanders των NILE που ανοίγει το στόμα του στο Cold Flame και ακούγεται σαν να σκεπάζει τον ήλιο με ένα καταθλιπτικό σκοτάδι και ο Jesse Leach των KILLSWITCH ENGAGE στο Ancestor είναι μια μουσική γέφυρα που ενώνει τα είδη με τέτοιο τρόπο που φέρνει κοντά δύο ακροατήρια.

Όσον αφορά τη μουσική το King of The North έχει στοιχεία από τους DAWN OF SOLACE και τους BEFORE THE DAWN μέσα του σαν ο Tuomas να φέρνει τα “παιδιά” του για να ενώσουν τις δυνάμεις τους. Μελωδίες που ξεδιπλώνονται σε μέρη πιάνου, κιθάρες που αφηγούνται ιστορίες, ενώ κρατάνε γερά τον ήχο των WOLFHEART. Νομίζω ότι η μπάντα έχει ανυψωθεί σε νέα ύψη και το King Of The North είναι το καλύτερό τους άλμπουμ μέχρι στιγμής. Αλλά είμαι επίσης σίγουρη, ότι από τη στιγμή που αυτή η μουσική ευφυΐα έχει κατακτήσει αυτόν τον στόχο, οδεύει προς τον επόμενο και μουσικά για αυτούς τους τύπους, ο ουρανός είναι το όριο. Ανοίξτε τα αυτιά σας και δυναμώστε το!

There is a Finnish word which can’t be translated in another language and ever since I heard about it, I identified it with Tuomas Saukkonen. Because it takes a man of “sisu” to be able to shift from genres, moods and influences in such a brilliant way and yet remain such a hamble easy going person. Once I listened to the new WOLFHEART King of the North out now on Napalm Records I have to say I would crown him without a second thought, as this album is the best WOLFHEART album so far and probably the most mature Saukkonen release, at least so far.

In this release WOLFHEART utilize 3 singers and have two guest appearances both of which are exceptional in their genre. Vocals are shared between Tuomas, Vangelis and Lauri in a way they best serve the songs. Karl Sanders of NILE who opens his mouth in Cold Flame and it sounds like he covers the sun in gloom darkness and Jesse Leach of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE in Ancestor is a musical bridge joining genres in such a way that he brings two audiences together.

As far as the music is concerned King of The North has elements of DAWN OF SOLACE and BEFORE THE DAWN in it like Tuomas brings in his “children” to join forces. Melodies unfolding in piano parts, guitars narrating stories while holding strong the WOLFHEART identity sound. I think that the band has elevated itself into new heights and King Of The North is their best so far. But I am also sure, that once this musical brilliance has conquered this goal, it’s heading for the next one and music wise for these guys, sky is the limit. Open your ears and turn it up!

Το The End, So Far είναι το 7ο studio album των SLIPKNOT το οποίο θα κυκλοφορήσει στις 30 Σεπτεμβρίου και θα είναι το τελευταίο album που θα κυκλοφορήσουν από την Roadrunner Records. Οι SLIPKNOT έχουν κυκλοφορήσει ήδη 3 εκρηκτικά singles, αφήνοντας μας να περιμένουμε με ανυπομονησία το ολοκληρωμένο album.

Το The End, So Far αποτελείται από 12 κομμάτια συνολικής διάρκειας 57 λεπτών και το ερώτημα είναι αν το album αυτό είναι το αποτέλεσμα όλων αυτών για τα οποία δούλευαν οι SLIPKNOT από το 1999. Είναι το αποκορύφωμά τους ή ένα πολύ μεγάλο ορόσημο στο ταξίδι της εξέλιξής τους;

Οι περισσότερες δουλειές των SLIPKNOT είχαν κάτι καινούργιο να προσφέρουν. Το The End, So Far δε διαφέρει, και ίσως να είναι κι ένα από τα πιο ώριμα albums τους. Από το πρώτο κομμάτι του The End, So Far, οι SLIPKNOT μας δίνουν πολλά να σκεφτούμε και να επεξεργαστούμε. Ομολογώ πως άκουσα κάτι τελείως διαφορετικό από αυτό που περίμενα. Το μελωδικό και μελαγχολικό Adderall είναι το πρώτο κομμάτι του The End, So Far, που με εξέπληξε ευχάριστα και μ’ έκανε να ανυπομονώ για το τι θα ακολουθήσει.

Δεν θα αναλύσω κάθε τραγούδι ξεχωριστά γιατί δεν θέλω το review να μετατραπεί σε spoiler. Θα πω όμως πως το The End, So Far δεν θα συγκριθεί ποτέ με το Iowa ή με το Vol. 3, αλλά και πώς δεν είναι γραφτό να συγκριθεί με αυτά. Το The End, So Far είναι μια περιπέτεια, μια βόλτα, κατά την οποία οι SLIPKNOT διευρύνουν το φάσμα των μουσικών, και στιχουργικά, των θεματικών τους προβληματισμών.

Στιχουργικά, οι 9 τύποι με τις μάσκες, μέσω του The End, So Far, κατεβάζουν τις μάσκες της κοινωνίας μας με ενστικτώδη αμεσότητα, και ανακαλύπτουν μαζί μας τι κρύβεται από κάτω. Μουσικά, θα ακούσεις κλασικό ήχο SLIPKNOT, θα ακούσεις bluesy περάσματα, new wave ήχους και βαρύτητα κρυστάλλινης ποιότητας. Θα ακούσεις τον μελαγχολικό Taylor και τον growling Taylor, γεμάτα riff και εκπληκτικά drums, μία καταπληκτική ενορχήστρωση και μία πολύ προσεγμένη παραγωγή.

Το The End, So Far είναι ένα album που πρέπει να ακουστεί για την μουσική του, με τις προσδοκίες στην άκρη και με ανοιχτό μυαλό. Έχει τόσες πολλές δυναμικές, με καινούργιες προοπτικές και αρκετά μέρη που οι SLIPKNOT δεν έχουν ξαναπάει. Εξακολουθούν όμως να ακούγονται σαν Slipknot. Το The End, So Far είναι συναρπαστικά πολύπλοκο και το μόνο που ξέρω σίγουρα, είναι ότι θα προκαλέσει αρκετές διαμάχες. Από εμένα είναι ναι!

This band certainly needs no introduction.  From 1999 until today they have managed through their discography (and their usually sensational live performances) to evolve into the boulder that goes by the name of SLIPKNOT.

The End, So Far is SLIPKNOT‘s 7th studio album which will be released on September 30th and will be the last album to be released on Roadrunner Records. SLIPKNOT have already released 3 explosive singles, leaving us eagerly awaiting the full length album.

The End, So Far consists of 12 tracks totaling 57 minutes and the question is whether this album is the result of everything SLIPKNOT have been working on since 1999. Is it their culmination or a very big milestone in their evolutionary journey?

Most of SLIPKNOT‘s work has had something new to offer. The End, So Far is no different, and may be one of their most mature albums. From the first track on The End, So Far, SLIPKNOT gives us a lot to think about and process. I have to admit that I heard something completely different from what I was expecting. The melodic and melancholic Adderall is the first track of The End, So Far, which pleasantly surprised me and made me look forward to what was to come.

I won’t analyze each song individually because I don’t want the review to turn into a spoiler. But I will say that The End, So Far will never compare to Iowa or Vol. 3, but also how it’s not meant to be compared to them. The End, So Far is an adventure, a ride, in which SLIPKNOT broaden the range of their musical, and lyrically, thematic concerns.

Lyrically, the 9 guys in masks, through The End, So Far, pull down the masks of our society with instinctive immediacy, and discover with us what lies beneath. Musically, you’ll hear classic SLIPKNOT sound, you’ll hear bluesy passages, new wave sounds and gravity of crystal clear quality. You’ll hear brooding Taylor and growling Taylor, full riffs and amazing drums, an amazing instrumentation and a high standard production.

The End, So Far is an album that should be listened to for its music, with expectations aside and an open mind. It has so many dynamics, with new perspectives and several places SLIPKNOT have never been before. But they still sound like SLIPKNOT. The End, So Far is fascinatingly complex and all I know for sure is that it’s going to cause a lot of controversy. From me it’s a yes!

Οι GRAVE DIGGER παρότι μετρούν 40 χρόνια όπως ανέφερα στο σανίδι, δεν απέκτησαν ποτέ το όνομα, την καριέρα και ίσως και το κοινό που θα μπορούσαν ή που άλλοι της ίδιας εποχής χαίρουν. Φαντάζομαι πως θα υπάρχουν λόγοι για αυτό, άλλοι σωστοί, άλλοι λάθος, το αποτέλεσμα πάντως παραμένει το ίδιο. Και παρά ταύτα, φτάνουμε στο 2022 και τον 21ο δίσκο τους για να αντιληφθούμε, αν δεν το είχαμε ήδη κάνει, πως η λέξη “διεκπεραιωτισμός” δεν υπάρχει στο μυαλό τους. Αδιαμφισβήτητα, δεν υπήρξαν ποτέ δάφνες για τους GRAVE DIGGER για να επαναπαυτούν σε αυτές, κάτι που πολύ πιθανόν και οι ίδιοι να γνωρίζουν καλά. Σαν αποτέλεσμα λοιπόν, το νέο τους “τέκνο” βρίθει προσπάθειας, βρίθει αγάπης και σκέψης.

Με ένα από τα καλύτερα και δυνατότερα μπασίματα heavy metal δίσκου που άκουσα τουλάχιστον για φέτος, το Battle Cry θεσπίζει μία συγκεκριμένη ηχητική διάθεση η οποία σε ακολουθεί μέχρι το τέλος. Στα όρια του thrash/speed θα τολμούσα να το χαρακτηρίσω σε σημεία, μην ξεχνάμε πως τα έχουν και τα χρονάκια τους οι φίλοι, κάτι που σε φάσεις τείνουν να ξεχνούν και οι ίδιοι. Στην τσίτα μόνιμα, με κλασικότατα κιθαριστικά riff, βασικά riff-αρες έχει όλος ο δίσκος, που φέρουν αυτή την μαγεία της δεκαετίας που εκπροσωπούν, το αυθόρμητο κούνημα του κεφαλιού σε κάθε στροφή και αλλαγή. Ανθεμικά refrain, ξέρουν καλά από αυτά οι Grave Digger, με  Battle Cry, Hell Is My Purgatory, Nights Of Jerusalem, Heart Of A Warrior να αποτελούν καλά παραδείγματα (και μαθήματα) του πως να στήνεις “κερκίδα”. Πλήρως επική διάθεση, ακόμα ένα χαρακτηριστικό και γνώριμο όπλο της μπάντας.

Φυσικά το θέμα του δίσκου, το οποίο είναι οι Σταυροφορίες και πιο συγκεκριμένα οι Ναΐτες Ιππότες, είναι κάτι πολυχρησιμοποιημένο, κάτι το οποίο έχουν ξανά αναπτύξει και σε παλαιότερη δουλειά τους. Αυτό όμως όπως φάνηκε δεν αποτέλεσε πρόβλημα, πιθανόν να βοήθησε στο τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Η ενιαία ατμόσφαιρα που φέρει ο δίσκος κάνει την ήδη πολύ καλή ροή του, ακόμα καλύτερη.

Για τιμιότητα μίλησα ξεκινώντας και εκεί καταλήγει προσωπικά για εμένα. Το Symbol Of Eternity είναι ένα πολύ τίμιο heavy metal άλμπουμ με ότι αυτό συνεπάγεται, από αυτά που δεν ακούς συχνά πλέον. Δεν θα πω αξιοπρεπές, το υποβαθμίζει θαρρώ λίγο αυτή η λέξη. Χτυπιέται άνετα αν δεν καπελώνει νεότερες μπάντες και πιο φρέσκες κυκλοφορίες. Τα Symbol Of Eternity και Grace Of God δεν είναι συνθέσεις που ακούς κάθε μέρα. Φτιαγμένο με μεράκι και όρεξη ακόμα, με προσπάθεια και θέληση για κάτι ποιοτικό και ουσιώδες. Ναι, φυσικά και η φωνή του κατά τα άλλα αξιαγάπητου Chris Boltendahl δεν είναι για όλους ή δεν βρίσκει ανταπόκριση να το πούμε πιο σωστά σε όλους. Αυτό δεν στερεί στο σύνολο όμως όλα τα παραπάνω. Δεν θα μπορούσε να περάσει απαρατήρητη και ασχολίαστη η συμμετοχή του Βασίλη Παπακωνσταντίνου στο Hellas Hellas το οποίο απέκτησε πλέον την κανονική του, στουντιακή υπόσταση. Ήταν δίκαιο και έγινε πράξη θα προσθέσω. Κρατάει τα ηνία ακόμα η παλιά φρουρά σε αυτά τα ηχητικά μονοπάτια.

Honesty dear gentlemen, and ladies of course. Honesty is something I value immensely in a release, along with honesty, those two go hand in hand in my mind when we come to chat about 40 or so years old musicians and bands. Because it’s ok to be a fanboy and in some cases to demystify some of those bands, but let’s be honest, a large percentage of this generation of players  now plays simply to maintain their respective name (and their respective large pocket), conservatively and sometimes indifferently to the point of boredom. Well, guess what, all of the above unflattering features is something you won’t find in Symbol Of Eternity.

GRAVE DIGGER, despite being a 40 years old band as I mentioned, never got the name, the career and maybe the audience and the reception that they could have or the one that others of the same era enjoy. I imagine there must be a few reasons for this, some right, some wrong, but the result remains the same. And yet, we arrive at the year 2022 and their 21st album to realize, if we hadn’t already realized, that the word “drudgery” does not exist in their minds. Without a doubt, GRAVE DIGGER  were never able to  rely on past success, never able to rest on that, they are very likely well aware of that. As a result, their new “child” is full of effort, full of love and a result of thought.

With one of the strongest heavy metal openings I’ve heard at least this year, Battle Cry sets a certain mood soundwise that follows you until the end. I would dare to characterize it as almost thrash/speed in some parts, let’s not forget that those guys also have quite some numbers on their age, which in times they tend to forget themselves.Constantly on the edge speedwise, with classic guitar riffs, actually the whole record has a bounce of  hell-of-a-riffs, which have this magic in them, the magic of the decade they represent musically, the spontaneous shaking of the head at every turn, in every twist. Anthemic choruses, GRAVE DIGGER always knew how to make these, with Battle Cry, Hell Is My Purgatory, Nights Of Jerusalem, Heart Of A Warrior being good examples (and lessons) of how to set up a “arena chorus”. Undoubtedly epic vibes, another signature and familiar weapon of the band’s arsenal.

Of course the record has a concept, which is the Crusades and more specifically the Knights Templar, something widely used and also something they already have developed again in an earlier work. But as it turned out, this did not cause a problem to them, it probably helped the final result. The atmosphere that the album carries because of it makes its already very good flow, even better.

I talked about honesty at the beginning of the review and that’s where it leads for me personally. Symbol Of Eternity is a very honest heavy metal album with all that this means, the kind you don’t hear often anymore. I won’t say decent, I think that word degrades it a bit. It easily beats if not overwhelms newer bands and releases. Symbol Of Eternity and Grace Of God are not compositions that happen every other day. Made with passion and heart, with effort and will for something that carries quality and has meaning. Yes, of course the voice of the otherwise lovable Chris Boltendahl is not for everyone, or to put it properly, does not resonate with everyones ear. However, this does not make less from all of the above. And by the way, the participation of Vassilis Papakonstantinou in Hellas Hellas, which now has a normal, studio version, could not go unnoticed and be ignored. It was about time I might add. The old guard still holds the keys and reigns on these genres.

Όταν λοιπόν ήρθε η ώρα να ακούσω το Halo, όλες οι αισθήσεις ήταν οξυμένες προκειμένου να αντιληφθώ ακόμα και την παραμικρή λεπτομέρεια. Το άκουσα μια φορά και έμεινα να αναρωτιέμαι, τι ήταν αυτό; Έτσι, το άκουσα και δεύτερη φορά, προκειμένου να ακούσω προσεκτικά, καθώς δεν θα μπορούσα να έχω ακούσει απλώς ένα ολόκληρο άλμπουμ και να νιώθω ότι δεν μουέφτασε και απλά να θέλω περισσότερο. Κύλησε νεράκι. Αυτό ακριβώς είναι το συναίσθημα του Halo. Είναι ένα άλμπουμ για κάθε οπαδό των AMORPHIS αλλά και για κάθε μουσικόφιλο. Έχοντας πάρει συνέντευξη από τον Esa Holopainen για το project του Silver Lake ξέρω ότι αμέσως μετά την ηχογράφηση του project του, προχώρησε στη δημιουργία αυτού του άλμπουμ, οπότε ξέρω ότι ήταν ήδη φορμαρισμένος, αλλά δεν ήμουν προετοιμασμένη για ένα τόσο πλούσιο και ευρύ αποτέλεσμα. Και θα γίνω πιο σαφής ως προς το τι εννοώ όταν λέω πλούσιο και ευρύ.

Το Halo είναι ίσως το καλύτερο παράδειγμα ελευθερίας για τους AMORPHIS μουσικά. Έχουν απλωθεί και προς την πιο ήπια αλλά και προς την ακραία πλευρά τους. Τα folkish στοιχεία τους, τα μελωδικά στοιχεία τους, τα δυνατά και ακραία στοιχεία τους είναι τέλεια ισορροπημένα για να συνθέσουν ένα πολύ καλό άλμπουμ. Είναι ο τέλειος τρόπος για να δελεάσουν νέους metalheads στον ήχο τους αλλά και μια απόλαυση για όσους απολαμβάνουν όλα όσα είναι και αντιπροσωπεύουν οι AMORPHIS. Η παραγωγή την οποία υπογράφει για άλλη μια φορά ο Jens Borgen είναι στιβαρή και πλούσια ενώ ταυτόχρονα επιτρέπει σε κάθε στοιχείο να λάμψει. Ο Tomi ξεπέρασε τον εαυτό του για άλλη μια φορά στα φωνητικά αναδεικνύοντας το χρώμα της φωνής του που αγαπάμε, ισορροπώντας ανάμεσα στα brutal και τα καθαρά φωνητικά. Όσο για τη μουσική, τα λόγια είναι φτωχά για να περιγράψουν πόσο καλά ενορχηστρωμένη είναι και πώς τα όργανα συνταιριάζονται για να υπηρετήσουν την ιστορία που αφηγούνται τόσο οι στίχοι του Pekka αλλά και οι μελωδίες.

Όντας λοιπόν οπαδός των AMORPHIS, και όντας πολύ προσεκτική με τις λέξεις που θα επιλέξω για να γράψω αυτή την κριτική για το Halo που κυκλοφορεί στις 11 Φεβρουαρίου από την Atomic Fire Records, έχω μια συμβουλή για εσάς… ανεβάστε την ένταση!

Am I an AMORPHIS fan? Definatelly! Will I allow this to have me biased while listening to their latest release Halo? No! Because the strictest opinions come from those who love you the most.

So when it was time to listen to Halo, all senses were heightened in order to perceive even the smallest of details. I went through it once and was left wοndering, what was that? So, I listened to a second time in order to listen closely, as I couldn’t have just listened to an entire album and feel like I didn’t get enough and simply want more. This is exactly what Halo feels like. It’s an album for every AMORPHIS fan but also for every music lover. Having interviewed Esa Holopainen for his project Silver Lake I know that he went right on into the creation of this album, directly after Silver Lake so I know he had his chops up but I wasn’t prepared for such a rich and wide result. And I will make myself clearer as to what I mean when I say rich and wide.

Halo is probably the best example of freedom for Amorphis musically. They have expanded both towards their softer but also towards their extreme side. Their folkish elements, their melodic elements, their powerful and extreme elements are perfectly balanced to compile an album that has no filler. It is the perfect way to lure new metalheads into their sound but also a treat for those who enjoy and savor all Amorphis is and represents. The production which was once more handled by Jens Borgen is solid and vast but at the same time allowing each element to shine through. Tomi has outdone himself once more in the vocals showcasing the color of his voice we love, lingering between brutal and clean vocals. As for the music, words are too poor to describe how well arranged it is and how the instruments come together to serve the story that’s told both by Pekka’s lyrics but also the melodies.

So being an AMORPHIS fan and being really cautious about the words I choose to write this album review on Halo which is out on February 11^th through Atomic Fire Records, I have one advice for you… turn up the volume!
