Μέσα από τον νέο δίσκο, το συγκρότημα δημοσίευσε ένα single/lyric video για το κομμάτι Forever Free. Σχετικά με το single, ο drummer του συγκροτήματος και υιός του Udo, Sven σχολίασε:

“Το Forever Free υποτίθεται ότι θα κάνει τους ανθρώπους να μην πιστεύουν απλώς τα γεγονότα που ακούνε ή τους δείχνουν, για παράδειγμα τα μέσα ενημέρωσης, αλλά να σκέφτονται ατομικά. Φυσικά, δεν εννοούμε ότι κάποιος πρέπει να αμφισβητεί τα πάντα. Το τραγούδι θα εκφράσει απλώς ότι είναι προτιμότερο να δημιουργεί κανείς τις δικές του απόψεις σχετικά με τις συγκρούσεις και άλλα θέματα που υποστηρίζει, ακόμα και όταν είναι λάθος μερικές φορές, παρά να ακολουθεί τυφλά τη μάζα. Είναι ένας μουσικός φόρος τιμής στο προνόμιό μας να ζούμε σε έναν ελεύθερο κόσμο, όπως ευτυχώς μπορούμε”.

The timeless and tireless Udo with his personal band, releases another album in his already existing long career. The title of the new album, Touchdown and is due out August 25th via Atomic Fire Records.

The band has released a single/lyric video from the new album, for the track Forever Free. About the single, the band’s drummer and Udo‘s son Sven commented:

“Forever Free is supposed to make people not simply believe facts they hear or get shown, for example by media, but to think individually. Of course, we don’t mean that one should question everything. The song shall just express that it’s better to create own opinions about conflicts and other topics one stands for, even when they’re wrong sometimes, than to follow the mass blindly. It’s a musical tribute to our privilege of living in a free world as we luckily can”.

Το video αφορά το κομμάτι Dark Descent και δεν αφήνει περιθώρια αμφισβήτησης ως προς την επιστροφή του συγκροτήματος στον γνώριμο ήχο του παρελθόντος τους.

With JAG PANZER‘s new album, The Hallowed just a few hours old, the band has released a new lyric video.

The video is for the track Dark Descent and leaves no doubt as to the band’s return to the familiar sound of their past.

Code Red will be the name of PRIMAL FEAR‘s new album and is expected to be released on September 1st via Atomic Fire Records.

The first sample inside the new album comes with the single/video clip for the track Another Hero.

Με αφορμή λοιπόν τον νέο τους δισκογραφικό πόνημα,το συγκρότημα δημοσίευσε ένα 14λεπτο video/documentary μέσα από το studio και την διαδικασία των ηχογραφήσεων και δημιουργία του album και φέρει τον τίτλο Tales From The Hallowed.

Το The Hallowed ακολουθεί θεματικά το comic book με τον ίδιο τίτλο, το οποίο και κυκλοφόρησε την περασμένη χρονιά.

JAG PANZER are preparing to release their 11th studio album, entitled The Hallowed, on June 23rd via Atomic Fire Records. The US power metal veterans seem to be making a strong return to the record industry after 6 years and since their last release, The Deviant Chord.

So on the occasion of their new record, the band has released a 14-minute video/documentary through the studio and the process of recording and creating the album entitled Tales From The Hallowed.

The Hallowed thematically follows the comic book of the same title, which was released last year.

Οι Nailed to Obscurity ανέβηκαν πρώτοι στη σκηνή για να αρχίσουν να μας ζεσταίνουν. Γνωστοί για τις μελαγχολικές ενορχηστρώσεις τους , ξεκίνησαν με αρκετά doom ατμόσφαιρα και μέχρι το τέλος του setlist τους νομίζω πως μας είχαν ζεστάνει για τα καλά. Τα riffs μπορεί να ήταν βαριά αλλά οι ίδιοι πετούσαν στην σκηνή, με τον frontman Raimund Ennenga να είναι πολύ δοτικός και άμεσος με το κοινό. Οι Nailed to Obscurity κέρδισαν την προσοχή μας με την εξαιρετική εμφάνισή τους και άνοιξαν τον δρόμο σε ένα από τα πιο σεβαστά και καταξιωμένα ευρωπαϊκά συγκροτήματα μελωδικού death εκεί έξω, τους Dark Tranquillity.

H αγάπη που έχω για τους Dark Tranquillity και για τον Mikael Stanne είναι απερίγραπτη και περίμενα με μεγάλη ανυπομονησία να τους δω live για πρώτη φορά. Το Identical To None ήταν το κομμάτι με το οποίο βγήκαν στην σκηνή οι Dark Tranquillity μετά το τέλος του οποίου ο Mikael μας ρώτησε “are you ready for some Gothenburg Death Metal?” Μα κάτι ερωτήσεις… Τo Lost to Apathy ήταν το κομμάτι που μας χάρισε την συνέχεια η παρέα του Mikael Stanne και του Martin Brändström με το κοινό να ενθουσιάζετε και την μπάντα να δείχνει πιο δυναμική από ποτέ.

Το setlist των Dark Tranquillity είχε κάτι για όλους. Κάτι από τα πιο πρόσφατα album τους όπως Phantom Days, The Dark Unbroken και Atoma  αλλά και ταξίδι στην memory lane των πιο παλιών οπαδών τους με τα deep cut Hours Passed in Exile και Cathode Ray Sunshine (το οποίο μας είπαν δεν είχαν ξαναπαρουσιάσει live σε άλλα tour). Το Misery’s Crown ήταν νομίζω ένας πολύ όμορφος τρόπος να μας πουν καληνύχτα και να μας αφήσουν διψασμένους για περισσότερες εμφανίσεις τους και ίσως καινούργιες μουσικές;! Η σκηνική παρουσία του Mikael Stanne  ήταν ασυναγώνιστη, το setlist τους ήταν η απόλυτη ισορροπία μεταξύ ενέργειας και συναισθηματισμού και με λίγα λόγια οι Dark Tranquillity πραγματοποίησαν μια εμφάνιση που ήταν τίποτα λιγότερο από σπουδαία.

Και κάπου εκεί τα φώτα ξανασβήνουν ώστε η σκηνή να ετοιμαστεί για τους co-headlines Eluveitie, που αποτελούνται, ω ναι, από 9 άτομα. Θα ήθελα να είμαι ο ηχολήπτης τους; Μάλλον όχι αν σκεφτείς πως έχουν από Hurdy-gurdy, βιολί, άρπα, γκάιντα, πίπιζες και μαζί με τα υπόλοιπα φυσικά, drums, κιθάρες, μπάσο, death growl φωνητικά και Fabienne Erni φωνητικά. Το banner τους και ο φωτισμός πριν ανέβουν στην σκηνή ήταν η απόλυτη ατμόσφαιρα και ξαφνικά πυκνοί καπνοί και ένα κοινό τρελαμένο κυριολεκτικά! To φρέσκο Exile of Gods ήταν το καλησπέρα των Eluveitie στο κοινό του Manchester, με την μαγνητική παρουσία της Fabienne Erni να μας συνεπαίρνει όλους μας αναμφισβήτητα.

Μουσική μαγεία ήταν η εμφάνιση των Eluveitie σε δύο λέξεις. Τσαμπουκαλεμένες διπλές κιθάρες, ο Chrigel Glanzmann με την Fabienne Erni να εξισορροπούν ο ένας τον άλλον με τα διαφορετικά στυλ τραγουδιού τους, οι Annie Reidiger (Hurdy-gurdy), Matteo Sisti (γκάιντα) και Nicole Anspenger (βιολί) ήταν απίστευτοι σε συγχρονισμό και επίδοση, ο ντράμερ Alain Ackermann πήρε μια στιγμή να λάμψει κατά τη διάρκεια ενός εντυπωσιακού σόλο στα τύμπανα και γενικά μία απίστευτη ορχηστρική εμπειρία.

Από πλευράς setlist οι Eluveitie μας χάρισαν τα δύο νέα singles φυσικά, αρκετά κομμάτια απ’το Ategnatos τα οποία ανέμειξαν πολύ όμορφα με πιο κλασικά κομμάτια ανάμεσά τους το The Call of the Mountains, Anu και το A Rose for Epona. Το κλείσιμο φυσικά ήρθε με το Inis Mona, και κάπως έτσι οι Eluveitie απέδειξαν πως μπορούν και ακούγονται εξαιρετικά ζωντανά και όχι μόνο ηχογραφημένα, παρόλα τα 9 άτομα επί σκηνής. Οι Eluveitie είναι όντως Pure Folk Metal και αν θέλετε να κάνετε ένα δώρο στον εαυτό σας τότε πηγαίνετε να τους δείτε, καθώς δεν θα ζήσετε ποτέ ξανά κάτι παρόμοιο! Την δική μου την καρδιά πάντως, την πήραν σίγουρα.

Το κέφι είναι ήδη στα ύψη και το κοινό δείχνει πολύ ευχαριστημένο μέχρι στιγμής αλλά αντέχουμε απανωτά χτυπήματα, οπότε τα φώτα κλείνουν και οι χτύποι της καρδιάς ανεβαίνουν γιατί οι δεύτεροι co-headliners  Amorphis ετοιμάζονται να βγούνε στη σκηνή για να μας κλείσουν στο υπέροχο και μαγικό μελωδικό μουσικό κουτί τους. Oι πρώτες νότες έρχονται απ’το Northwards και το album Halo του 2022, και μέχρι το τέλος του κομματιού έχεις ήδη καταλάβει γιατί οι Amorphis είναι η τρομερή μουσική δύναμη που είναι.

Οι Esa Holopainen και Tomi Koivusaari μας μαγεύουν με τα groovy, μελωδικά κιθαριστικά riffs τους και με το πως οι ίδιοι αφιερώνονται και ζουν στο 100% αυτό που συμβαίνει. Ο δε Esa Holopainen, για εμένα ήταν και από αυτό το live και μετά θα είναι για είναι για πάντα το “music gift that keeps on giving”. Olli-Pekka Laine και Jan Rechberger βάζουν φωτιά στο μπάσο και τα τύμπανα αντίστοιχα και δεν μας αφήνουν να χάσουμε χτύπημα για χτύπημα, ενώ ο Santeri Kallio δίνει αυτή την αιθέρια αίσθηση των Amorphis μέσω των πλήκτρων του. Τώρα για τον Tomi Joutsen θα πω πως φωνητικά ήταν άψογος και συνολικά η παρουσία/ερμηνεία του ήταν απλά δολοφονική. Νομίζω βέβαια δεν κατάφερα να δω το πρόσωπό του χωρίς μαλλιά μες την μέση καθ’ όλη την διάρκεια της συναυλίας.

Με το Halo να έχει κυκλοφορήσει μέσα στο 2022  θα περίμενες να το παίξουν σχεδόν όλο, και είχαν κάθε δικαίωμα φυσικά, αλλά χάρηκα τόσο πολύ με το setlist που έφτιαξαν οι Amorphis αφού τα Into Hiding, Black Winter Day και My Kantele ήταν πολύ ευχάριστες εκπλήξεις για πολλούς από εμάς. Silver Bride, The Bee, Wrong Direction αλλά και φυσικά αρκετά κομμάτια του Halo ήταν επίσης μέσα στην υπέροχη εμφάνιση των Amorphis. Το House of Sleep ήταν το καληνύχτα των Amorphis επιβεβαιώνοντας πως μετά από 30 χρόνια καριέρας συνεχίζουν να είναι ανάμεσα στις τοπ καλύτερες, πιο ταλαντούχες και δημιουργικές metal μπάντες ever, αφήνοντας στις καρδιές μας την ανάμνηση μιας αξέχαστης συναυλίας!

Somewhere around 5pm on the afternoon of 24th November 2022, outside the O2 Ritz in rainy and windswept Manchester, the queue of those eager to experience the magic of another co-headlining tour is beginning to form. This time the mighty Amorphis join forces with the formidable Eluveitie, and alongside with the adored Gothenburg-death giants Dark Tranquillity and the up-and-coming doom/death Nailed to Obscurity, they fill venue after venue across Europe and prove loudly what the European metal scene has to offer.

Nailed to Obscurity were the first to take the stage and to start warming us up. Known for their melancholic arrangements, they started off with quite a doom vibe and by the end of their setlist I think they had warmed us up for good. The riffs may have been heavy but they were flying around the stage themselves, with frontman Raimund Ennenga being very communicative and direct with the audience. Nailed to Obscurity gained our attention with their excellent performance and paved the way for one of the most respected and established European melodic death bands out there, Dark Tranquillity.

The love I have for Dark Tranquillity and for Mikael Stanne is indescribable and I was looking forward to seeing them live, for the first time. Identical To None was the song Dark Tranquillity came on stage with after which Mikael asked us “are you ready for some Gothenburg Death Metal?” Well of course… Lost to Apathy was the next song by the team of Mikael Stanne and Martin Brändström with the audience getting excited and the band looking more dynamic than ever.

Dark Tranquillity’s setlist had something for everyone. Something from their more recent albums like Phantom Days, The Dark Unbroken and Atoma but also a trip down memory lane of their older fans with deep cut Hours Passed in Exile and Cathode Ray Sunshine (which we were told they had never performed live on any other tour). Misery’s Crown was I think a very nice way to say goodnight and leave us thirsty for more of their shows and maybe new music?! Mikael Stanne’s stage presence was unbeatable, their setlist was the perfect balance between energy and emotion and in short Dark Tranquillity put on a performance that was nothing but magnificent.

And the lights went out again so that the stage could be set for co-headliners Eluveitie, consisting of, oh yes, 9 people. Would I like to be their FOH engineer? Probably not considering they have everything from hurdy-gurdy (with new member, the lovely Annie Reidiger), violin, harp, bagpipes, whistles, alongside with drums, guitars, bass, death growl vocals and Fabienne Erni vocals. Their banner and lighting before they took the stage was the ultimate atmosphere and suddenly..thick smoke and a literally frenzied crowd! The fresh Exile of Gods was Eluveitie’s good evening to the Manchester crowd, with Fabienne Erni’s magnetic presence undoubtedly captivating us all.

Musical magic was Eluveitie’s performance in two words. Crunchy double guitars, Chrigel Glanzmann and Fabienne Erni balancing each other with their different singing styles, Annie Reidiger (Hurdy-gurdy), Matteo Sisti (bagpipes) and Nicole Anspenger (violin) were incredible in timing and performance, drummer Alain Ackermann took a moment to shine during an impressive drum solo, and overall an incredible orchestral experience.

On the setlist side Eluveitie gave us the two new singles of course, several tracks from Ategnatos which they mixed beautifully with their more classic tracks like The Call of the Mountains, Αnu and A Rose for Epona. The closing of course came with Inis Mona, and with Eluveitie proving that they can and do sound outstanding live and not just recorded, despite all 9 people on stage. Eluveitie are indeed Pure Folk Metal and if you want to give yourself a gift then go see them, as you will never experience anything like it again! They definitely captured my heart.

The mood is already high and the crowd seems very happy so far but we can take repeated hits, so the lights are off and the heartbeats are up because second co-headliners Amorphis are about to take the stage to encapture us in their wonderful and magical melodic music box. The first notes come from Northwards and their top-notch 2022 album Halo, and by the end of the track you already understand why Amorphis are the unstoppable musical force that they are.

Esa Holopainen and Tomi Koivusaari captivate us with their groovy, melodic guitar riffs and how they focus, dedicate themselves and experience on 100% what’s going on. And a note, Esa Holopainen, for me, has been and from this live onwards will forever be the “music gift that keeps on giving”. Olli-Pekka Laine and Jan Rechberger set the bass and drums on fire respectively and don’t let us miss hit after hit, while Santeri Kallio gives that ethereal Amorphis feel through his keyboards. Now for Tomi Joutsen I will say that vocally he was flawless and overall his presence/performance was just a killer. And also that I didn’t get to see his face without hair in the middle throughout the whole show.

With Halo being released in 2022 you’d expect them to play almost all of it, and they had every right of course and we would have enjoyed it, but I was over the moon with the setlist Amorphis put together as Into Hiding, Black Winter Day and My Kantele were very pleasant surprises for many of us. Silver Bride, The Bee, Wrong Direction and of course several songs from Halo were also part of the great Amorphis set. House of Sleep was Amorphis’ good night and conlusion for the night, with a performance confirming that even after 30 years they righteously are still among the top best, most talented and creative metal bands ever, leaving in our hearts the memory of an unforgettable concert!

“’The Well’ tells a story about an individual causing chaos and mayhem by breaking the principles of society. It is a timeless force phenomenon repeating itself in the history of time, a kind of natural force among the human kind”, vocalist Tomi Joutsen states. “The song itself is drawing some influences from the early scandinavian early black metal and classic oriental Amorphis vibes. Κομμάτια όπως το Fire του Arthur Brown, το Paint It Black των ROLLING STONES ή το No Class των MOTORHEAD ανήκουν στην προαναφερθείσα κατηγορία. Φυσικά, υπάρχουν κομμάτια που θα μπορούσαν ίσως και να λείπουν, όπως το Man Of The Silver Mountain ή το Sympathy από RAINBOW και URIAH HEEP αντίστοιχα, καθώς ας μην κρυβόμαστε, έχουν ιδιαίτερες φωνητικές απαιτήσεις από την φύση τους και αν μη τι άλλο έχουν διασκευαστεί και ερμηνευτεί στο παρελθόν από τρομερές φωνές. Όχι ότι δεν είναι ιδιαίτερη από μόνη της η παρουσία του Udo σε αυτά, αλλά η αλήθεια είναι πως ίσως και να μπορούσαν να αντικατασταθούν με κάτι πιο ταιριαστό. Από την άλλη βέβαια, μέχρι και σε Tina Turner έκανε διασκευή ο αθεόφοβος και θα τολμήσω να πω πως μου άρεσε κιόλας. Ιδιαίτερη μνεία πρέπει να γίνει όμως και στους μουσικούς που των πλαισιώνουν, οι οποίοι παίζουν εξαιρετικά και έχουν βοηθήσει τα δέοντα στο πως ηχεί το τελικό αποτέλεσμα. Τρανό παράδειγμα η διασκευή με κάθε πιθανή και δυνατή έννοια του We Will Rock You των QUEEN.

Σίγουρα δεν έχουμε ανάγκη ακόμα έναν δίσκο διασκευών, αλλά ίσως και να τον είχε ανάγκη ο Udo, καθώς ακούγεται να το διασκεδάζει πολύ. Δεν θα κρύψω πως στο My Way συγκινήθηκα λίγο, έχει μια πολύ όμορφη ειλικρίνεια η ερμηνεία του στο συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι. Προσωπικά πέρασα πολύ καλά ακούγοντας τον δίσκο και στην τελική αυτό νομίζω είναι και το ζητούμενο. Στο κάτω κάτω ποιος είμαι εγώ να πω αν γιορτάζει καλά ή όχι ο Udo Dirkschneider τα εβδομήντα του χρόνια;

His musical shadow is almost as big as this music’s banner, which he holds up high for almost half a century now. Both as the original frontman of ACCEPT and as the master of the ship that bears his name, Udo Dirkschneider has nothing to prove to anyone. He succeeded and proved that there is life beyond ACCEPT with dignity and he has had a pretty dissent musical career since then, one that anyone would be jealous to have. So, it’s time for him to do a cover album as well. An album that could not have a more appropriate title.

My Way is the first Udo release under his new record label, that of Atomic Fire Records, to which he recently signed on and will be released on April 22nd. The songs he chose to present to us in his own unique way are pretty impressive, as impressive is their number, seventeen in total. According to him, these songs are part of his life, either because he listened to them as a young man or as covers that ACCEPT played in their early days. As expected, not all tracks are equally successful in their approach, but are all special in their own way and manage to sound magical like the next Udo song in every aspect. And this, if you ask me dear readers, is truly an achievement. It means that your identity and presence is so distinctive and unique as a musical entity, that it manages to make tracks like Hell Raiser from THE SWEET sound like Udo right from the start.

Tracks such as Arthur Brown’s Fire, ROLLING STONE’s Paint It Black or MOTORHEAD’s No Class fall to the aforementioned category. Of course, there are songs that could have been left out, such as Man Of The Silver Mountain or Sympathy by RAINBOW and URIAH HEEP respectively, cause let’s be honest, they have really high vocal requirements non the less and have also been performed and covered in the past by great singers. Not that Udo’s presence is not special by itself, but the truth is that maybe they could have replaced those songs with something more suitable. On the other hand, that little rascal made a cover of a Tina Turner song and I will dare to say that I really liked it. A special mention should be made to the musicians who accompany him exceptionally and have helped a lot in how the final result sounds. A great example of exactly that is the, in every possible way and meaning of the word, cover of We Will Rock You by QUEEN.

We certainly do not need another cover album, but maybe Udo needed one, he must have had  a lot of fun by the sound of it. I will not hide that in My Way I was a little moved, his performance on that song has a very beautiful sincerity in it. Personally, I had a great time listening to the album and at the end of the day, I think that’s what’s all about. After all, who am I to say whether or not Udo Dirkschneider is celebrating his seventieth birthday the “right way”?

Όταν λοιπόν ήρθε η ώρα να ακούσω το Halo, όλες οι αισθήσεις ήταν οξυμένες προκειμένου να αντιληφθώ ακόμα και την παραμικρή λεπτομέρεια. Το άκουσα μια φορά και έμεινα να αναρωτιέμαι, τι ήταν αυτό; Έτσι, το άκουσα και δεύτερη φορά, προκειμένου να ακούσω προσεκτικά, καθώς δεν θα μπορούσα να έχω ακούσει απλώς ένα ολόκληρο άλμπουμ και να νιώθω ότι δεν μουέφτασε και απλά να θέλω περισσότερο. Κύλησε νεράκι. Αυτό ακριβώς είναι το συναίσθημα του Halo. Είναι ένα άλμπουμ για κάθε οπαδό των AMORPHIS αλλά και για κάθε μουσικόφιλο. Έχοντας πάρει συνέντευξη από τον Esa Holopainen για το project του Silver Lake ξέρω ότι αμέσως μετά την ηχογράφηση του project του, προχώρησε στη δημιουργία αυτού του άλμπουμ, οπότε ξέρω ότι ήταν ήδη φορμαρισμένος, αλλά δεν ήμουν προετοιμασμένη για ένα τόσο πλούσιο και ευρύ αποτέλεσμα. Και θα γίνω πιο σαφής ως προς το τι εννοώ όταν λέω πλούσιο και ευρύ.

Το Halo είναι ίσως το καλύτερο παράδειγμα ελευθερίας για τους AMORPHIS μουσικά. Έχουν απλωθεί και προς την πιο ήπια αλλά και προς την ακραία πλευρά τους. Τα folkish στοιχεία τους, τα μελωδικά στοιχεία τους, τα δυνατά και ακραία στοιχεία τους είναι τέλεια ισορροπημένα για να συνθέσουν ένα πολύ καλό άλμπουμ. Είναι ο τέλειος τρόπος για να δελεάσουν νέους metalheads στον ήχο τους αλλά και μια απόλαυση για όσους απολαμβάνουν όλα όσα είναι και αντιπροσωπεύουν οι AMORPHIS. Η παραγωγή την οποία υπογράφει για άλλη μια φορά ο Jens Borgen είναι στιβαρή και πλούσια ενώ ταυτόχρονα επιτρέπει σε κάθε στοιχείο να λάμψει. Ο Tomi ξεπέρασε τον εαυτό του για άλλη μια φορά στα φωνητικά αναδεικνύοντας το χρώμα της φωνής του που αγαπάμε, ισορροπώντας ανάμεσα στα brutal και τα καθαρά φωνητικά. Όσο για τη μουσική, τα λόγια είναι φτωχά για να περιγράψουν πόσο καλά ενορχηστρωμένη είναι και πώς τα όργανα συνταιριάζονται για να υπηρετήσουν την ιστορία που αφηγούνται τόσο οι στίχοι του Pekka αλλά και οι μελωδίες.

Όντας λοιπόν οπαδός των AMORPHIS, και όντας πολύ προσεκτική με τις λέξεις που θα επιλέξω για να γράψω αυτή την κριτική για το Halo που κυκλοφορεί στις 11 Φεβρουαρίου από την Atomic Fire Records, έχω μια συμβουλή για εσάς… ανεβάστε την ένταση!

Am I an AMORPHIS fan? Definatelly! Will I allow this to have me biased while listening to their latest release Halo? No! Because the strictest opinions come from those who love you the most.

So when it was time to listen to Halo, all senses were heightened in order to perceive even the smallest of details. I went through it once and was left wοndering, what was that? So, I listened to a second time in order to listen closely, as I couldn’t have just listened to an entire album and feel like I didn’t get enough and simply want more. This is exactly what Halo feels like. It’s an album for every AMORPHIS fan but also for every music lover. Having interviewed Esa Holopainen for his project Silver Lake I know that he went right on into the creation of this album, directly after Silver Lake so I know he had his chops up but I wasn’t prepared for such a rich and wide result. And I will make myself clearer as to what I mean when I say rich and wide.

Halo is probably the best example of freedom for Amorphis musically. They have expanded both towards their softer but also towards their extreme side. Their folkish elements, their melodic elements, their powerful and extreme elements are perfectly balanced to compile an album that has no filler. It is the perfect way to lure new metalheads into their sound but also a treat for those who enjoy and savor all Amorphis is and represents. The production which was once more handled by Jens Borgen is solid and vast but at the same time allowing each element to shine through. Tomi has outdone himself once more in the vocals showcasing the color of his voice we love, lingering between brutal and clean vocals. As for the music, words are too poor to describe how well arranged it is and how the instruments come together to serve the story that’s told both by Pekka’s lyrics but also the melodies.

So being an AMORPHIS fan and being really cautious about the words I choose to write this album review on Halo which is out on February 11^th through Atomic Fire Records, I have one advice for you… turn up the volume!

“Μου ήρθε η ιδέα να αντιστρέψω την κατεύθυνση του ρεύματος Tuonela – το Tuonela είναι το βασίλειο των νεκρών στη φινλανδική μυθολογία. Έτσι άρχισα να γράφω από τη στιγμή του θανάτου… Και ο θάνατος δεν ήταν το τέλος, αλλά η αρχή”.

“Είναι ένα πραγματικά υπέροχο συναίσθημα που μπορούμε ακόμη να παράγουμε πολύ καλή μουσική ως συγκρότημα,” δηλώνει ο Esa Holopainen. “Ίσως ένα συγκεκριμένο είδος αυτοκριτικής και μακροχρόνιας εμπειρίας που κορυφώνονται σε αυτά τα τελευταία άλμπουμ». Για τον ίδιο τον τραγουδοποιό, το “Halo” ακούγεται οικείο και διαφορετικό. «Είναι απόλυτα αναγνωρίσιμο Amorphis από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος, αλλά η γενική ατμόσφαιρα είναι λίγο πιο βαριά και πιο progressive και επίσης οργανική σε σύγκριση με τον προκάτοχό του», εξηγεί αναλυτικά.

Ο Tomi Joutsen προσθέτει, “Για μένα, το “Halo” ακούγεται λίγο πιο απογυμνωμένο σε σύγκριση με το “Queen Of Time” και το “Under The Red Cloud”. Ωστόσο, μην με παρεξηγήσετε: όταν ένα συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι πρέπει να ακούγεται μεγάλο, τότε ακούγεται πολύ μεγάλο».

Αυτό φυσικά οφείλεται επίσης στον παραγωγό του Jens Bogren που συγκέντρωσε τα δεκατρία τελευταία κομμάτια από μια παρτίδα τριάντα τραγουδιών. «Ο Jens είναι πολύ απαιτητικός, αλλά μου αρέσει πολύ να συνεργάζομαι μαζί του», λέει ο Holopainen. «Φροντίζει όλο το album από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος και επιτρέπει στον μουσικό να επικεντρωθεί μόνο στο να παίζει. “It really is a great feeling that we can still produce very decent music as a band,” says Esa Holopainen. “Perhaps a certain kind of self-criticism and long experience culminate in these latest albums.” To the songwriter himself, “Halo” sounds both familiar and different. “It is thoroughly recognizable Amorphis from beginning to end but the general atmosphere is a little bit heavier and more progressive and also organic compared to its predecessor,” he elaborates.

Tomi Joutsen adds, “To me, ‘Halo’ sounds a little more stripped down compared to ‘Queen Of Time’ and ‘Under The Red Cloud.’ However, don’t get me wrong: when a certain song needs to sound big, then it sounds very big.”

That’s of course also thanks to producing renaissance man Jens Bogren who harvested the thirteen final tracks from a batch of thirty songs AMORPHIS offered him. “Jens is very demanding, but I really like to work with him,” says Holopainen. “He takes care of the whole project from start to finish, and he allows the musician to focus on just playing. I may not be able to thank Jens enough. Everything we’ve done together has been really great, and this co-operation has carried Amorphis significantly forward.”

No AMORPHIS album would be complete without the imaginative and poetic storytelling of renowned lyricist and “Kalevala” expert Artist Pekka Kainulainen. “From day one, Pekka has always been an enthusiastic and prolific lyricist for Amorphis,” says Joutsen. “It is a slow process of translating archaic Finnish poetry into English and adapting it to our progressive rhythms. Fortunately, Pekka does everything on time and with great care.”

”’Halo’ is a loose themed record filled with adventurous tales about the mythical North tens of thousands of years ago,” Kainulainen explains. “The lyrics tell of an ancient time when man wandered to these abandoned boreal frontiers after the ice age. While describing the revival of a seminal culture in a world of new opportunities, I also try to reach the sempiternal forces of the human mind.”

Πάμε ένα βήμα πίσω, όταν πρωτακούσαμε ότι ο lead Κιθαρίστας των Amorphis θα βγάλει προσωπικό άλμπουμ. Τι σκέφτηκες; Θα σου πω εγώ τι σκέφτηκα, ένα άλμπουμ που ο κιθαρίστας θα έκανε μια επίδειξη δυνάμεων και τεχνικής πάνω στην κιθάρα όπως κάνουν συνήθως οι κιθαρίστες. Όμως όπως μας εξήγησε στη συνέντευξη που μας παραχώρησε ο Esa κάτι τέτοιο δεν τον απασχολεί καθώς και ο ίδιος δεν είναι φίλος τέτοιου είδους κυκλοφορίων. Αντίθετα έγραψε 9 τραγούδια από τα οποία μόνο το ένα είναι instrumental και σε όλα τα υπόλοιπα συνεργάστηκε με μερικές από τις γοητευτικότερες φωνές της σκηνής για να φτιάξει ένα άλμπουμ που ακούγεται ολόκληρο και μοιάζει μια αναζωογονητική βουτιά σε μια δροσερή λίμνη. Υπέροχες μελωδίες με πρωταγωνιστές τις φωνές που έχουν αφεθεί από τον κιθαρίστα να επιδείξουν όλη τους την ικανότητα συνθέτουν ένα ονειρικό άλμπουμ με πλούσιες μελωδίες όμοιες με αυτές που μας έχει συνηθίσει ο Esa με τους Amorphis αλλά και σε λιγότερο σκληρά μονοπάτια. Ένα άλμπουμ που μπορεί άνετα να αποτελέσει την αφορμή για νέους ακροατές που δεν έχουν ξανακούσει metal να μυηθούν στο χώρο. Όσον αφορά το τι θα ακούσετε, ούτε ο ίδιος ο Esa δεν μπορεί να το κατατάξει σε ένα είδος. Εγώ θα πω μόνο ότι αν μπορείς να εκτιμήσεις τη μουσική, αυτό το άλμπουμ είναι πραγματικά ένα δώρο για τις αισθήσεις σου. Πάρτε το μαζί σας όπου και αν είστε και αφήστε την αναζωογονητική δροσιά του  να σας πλημμυρίσει.

If you could capture a silver lake in musical notes you would have to compose melodies that glide like a breeze on the lake’s surface rippling the water while offering you a taste of its depth filling you with serenity that offers you a smile and peace. If you could capture a Silver Lake in notes you would be Esa Holopainen because with his first solo release he truly makes the listener bathe in fresh crispy melodies that are transcendent.

Let’s take a step back, when we first hear the lead guitarist of Amorphis is about to release a personal album. What did you think? I’ll tell you what I thought. I thought it was going to be a album that the guitarist will illustrate his virtuoso guitar skills like all guitarists do. However, as he explained in the interview, he offered us, he is not interested in showing how good of a guitarist he is as he is not a fan of such releases himself. Instead he wrote 9 songs out of which only one is instrumental. For the rest of the songs he collaborated with some of the most enchanting voices in the metal scene only to release an album that is savored start to finish like a rejuvenating dive into a crispy cool lake.  Jonas Renkse of Katatonia, Hakan Hemlin of Nordman, Einar Solberg of Leprous, Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis, Bjorn ‘Speed’ Strid of Soilwork, Anneke Van Giersbergen and  Vesa-Matti Loiri.

Amazing melodies with the voices taking the lead and having the freedom to be showcased compile a dreamy album rich in melodies like tha ones we’re accustomed to by Esa in Amorphis but also less harsh. This album can be the stepping stone for all music appreciators to be introduced into the metal scene. As far as placing it within a genre not even Esa can guide us in a particular one. I would have to say that if you can appreciate music in general, this album is a gift to your senses. Take it with you and let its refreshing effect flood you.
