Το βραδάκι το Σαββάτου πλησιάζει, έχω ήδη φτάσει στο Backstage by the Mill, κι ενώ έξω έχει κρύο και βρέχει ασταμάτητα μέσα στο venue αρχίζει να επικρατεί κλίμα τροπικό, μιας και οι Crimson Fire είναι οι πρώτοι που θα ανέβουν στην σκηνή. Από το 2004 και με βάση τους την Αθήνα, οι Crimson Fire  μας χαρίζουν αστεροσκονάτο και earth/booty shaking 80’s power metal που σε μεταφέρει σε επικές εποχές που το heavy metal ήταν τρόπος ζωής.

Οι Crimson Fire ανεβαίνουν στην σκηνή και απλά ξέρουν πως να σε κάνουν να περάσεις όμορφα και το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι they did Set the Night on Fire, στο γεμάτο πλέον Backstage by the Mill, με ένα καταπληκτικό σετλιστ γεμάτο με επιλογές από τον πιο πρόσφατο δίσκος τους Another Dimension (2021), αλλά και παλιότερες επιτυχίες τους. 

H συνταγή της επιτυχίας των Crimson Fire  περιλαμβάνει δυναμικά και ταυτόχρονα βελούδινα, νοσταλγικά φωνητικά, δεξιοτεχνικές κιθάρες και rocksteady rhythm section με μπάσο και ντραμς που απλά δεν σε αφήνουν να σταματήσεις να headbango-λικνίζεσαι.

Κι αν κανείς προσθέσει την σκηνική τους παρουσία, την τσαχπινιά, τον αυθορμητισμό και την φανερή αγάπη τους για αυτό που κάνουν… Voilà, μία υπέροχη εμφάνιση!

Ήταν η πρώτη φορά που είδα τους Crimson Fire live και το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι με άφησαν να ανυπομονώ για την επόμενη!

Κι αφόυ οι Crimson Fire έχουν ανάψει τα αίματα και μας έχουν ζεστάνει για τα καλά, σειρά έχουν οι Fusion Bomb από το Λουξεμβούργο. Με ένα full studio album στο ενεργητικό τους, (Concrete Jungle, 2019) κι ένα πρόσφατο EP (Fusion Bomb, 2023) αυτοί οι πιτσιρικάδες ξεχειλίζουν από thrash-ική ενέργεια.

Πρώτη φορά για εμένα που τους άκουσα και πήρα προφανής Bay Area επιρροές με μία δόση πιο γυαλισμένου, new-age hardcore δικού τους ήχου.

Είναι πάντα λίγο δύσκολο να εκφέρεις ολοκληρωμένη άποψη όταν δεν γνωρίζεις ήδη την μπάντα πριν την δεις live. Aυτό όμως που μπορώ να πω με σιγουριά είναι ότι πρώτον μας χάρισαν μία πάρα πολύ όμορφη top-notch εμφάνιση, η ενέργειά τους ήταν καταπληκτική και το βασικότερο όλων, όταν γύρισα σπίτι ήθελα να ανακαλύψω περισσότερο την μουσική τους. Και για εμένα αυτό είναι win-win!

Και η στιγμή έφτασε για αυτά τα τέσσερα αγόρια που ακούνε στο όνομα Suicidal Angels να ανέβουν στη σκηνή και να μας χαρίσουν ένα αξέχαστο live. Θα προσπαθήσω να είμαι σύντομη και περιεκτική…με έμφαση στο θα προσπαθήσω! ‘Αν έχεις δει τους Suicidal Angels live στο παρελθόν ξέρεις πως στο τέλος της βραδιάς η φράση κλειδί είναι…”μα τι ζήσαμε πάλι απόψε!” Ε, και αυτή τη φορά δεν άλλαξε κάτι, μιας και η φράση κλειδί παραμένει η ίδια…απλά στον υπερθετικό βαθμό της. 

Jaws….με Ορφέα, Άγγελο, Gus και Νίκο να βγαίνουν διαδοχικά στη σκηνή, και το κοινό να ανυπομονεί να “παλέψει”. When the Lions Die είναι το πρώτο τραγούδι της βραδιάς από τα παιδιά και όντας το πρώτο single που δόθηκε στην κυκλοφορία από το Profane Prayer, και το οποίο πραγματικά μας τρέλανε, σίγουρα η καλύτερη επιλογή για την έναρξη του live.

Στο καπάκι το Crypt of Madness ανέβασε κι άλλο την θερμοκρασία μέσα στο Backstage by the Mill, με τον Ορφέα Τζορτζόπουλο  και τον Άγγελο Λελικάκη να δίνουν στους αυχένες μας  ενα κανονικότατο boot-camp based workout!

Και νομίζω πως είναι περιττό να σας πω πως η αυχενική μοίρα μας δεν ξαναβρήκε το σωστό alignment της μέχρι και μετά το τέλος του live αφού ήταν αφημένη στα έμπειρα χέρια αυτών των δύο rhythm masters, που μ΄ έναν τρόπο μαγικό μπορούν και δημιουργούν μία ελεγχόμενη ρυθμική φρενίτιδα!

Οι μαγευτικές κιθάρες του Gus Drax είναι σε πλήρη εναρμόνιση με τις κοφτερές κιθάρες και τα πανίσχυρα φωνητικά του Νίκου Μελισσουργού, πράγμα το οποίο φυσικά συνεπάγεται την φλογερή και σφοδρή μουσική επίθεση με αμιγώς κοφτερά riffs, εκπληκτικά jaw-dropping Gus σόλο και αυτή την χαρακτηριστική εθιστική χροιά του Νίκου να μας λέει “the knife goes deeper, return of the reaper…” οδηγώντας μας και οι δύο, σε έναν μελωδικότατο Thrash παράδεισο.

We are born of….μας λέει επιτακτικά ο Νίκος, μαγνητίζοντάς μας και καλόντας μας να ολοκληρώσουμε τον στίχο…λίγο πριν τα ντραμς του Ορφέα παρουν φωτιά και λίγο πριν ο Gus και ο Άγγελος αρχίσουν να οργώνουν την σκηνή με Born of Hate και Years of Aggression να ακολουθούν, πηγαίνοντάς μας πίσω σ’ένα πολύ καλό άλμπουμ που δυστυχώς οι Suicidal Angels δεν κατάφεραν να περιοδεύσουν λόγω της πανδημίας. Η αποζημίωση όμως για όλα τα χαμένα της πανδημίας είναι εδώ και για εμάς, αφού οι Suicidal Angels επέστρεψαν πιο δυναμικά από ποτέ as fire raging με ένα killer Profane Prayer αλλά ελπίζουμε και για αυτούς, μιας και η αγάπη και η στήριξή μας δεν χάθηκαν ποτέ.

Μία εξαιρετική εμφάνιση κι ένα φλογερό και λαχταριστό setlist μας χάρισαν λοιπόν οι Suicidal Angels αυτό το βροχερό βράδυ στο Παρίσι, με πολλά κομμάτια από το Profane Prayer φυσικά, αλλά και πολυβόλα από την υπόλοιπη δισκογραφία τους. Όλοι μας γνωρίζουμε πως εχουμε να κάνουμε με τέσσερις πολύ καλούς και έμπειρους μουσικούς μεμονωμένα, άρα ξέρουμε πως εκτελεστικά ήταν ένα εξαιρετικό live, μιας και τα παιδιά αυτά δεν απογοητεύουν ποτέ και δεν παζαρεύουν ποτέ την ποιότητα του οτιδήποτε κάνουν.

Αυτό όμως που για εμένα κάνει αυτό, αλλά και κάθε live των Suicidal Angels μοναδικό είναι το πόσο εξυψώνουν ο ένας τον άλλον, το πόσο αγαπάνε αυτό που κάνουν και το πόσο έχουν δουλέψει όλοι μαζί για να έχουν αυτό το αποτέλεσμα. Οι Suicidal Angels δουλεύουν πολύ σκληρά για το όνειρό τους, γιατί let’s face it, μόνο έτσι το όνειρο γίνεται πραγματικότητα, κι εμείς είμαστε πολύ τυχεροί που καταφέρνουμε και ζούμε αυτή την ονειρική πραγματικότητα μαζί τους. Και για αυτό δεν έχουμε παρά να τους ευχαριστήσουμε!

So two weeks ago I took my beret, my smile and my snazziness and headed towards the magical and romantic Paris. The reason being, the gig of the also magical and never less romantic Suicidal Angels at Backstage by the Mill as part of their Profanation Over Europe Tour, to mark the release of their newest album Profane Prayer, which was released on March 1st by Nuclear Blast. Suicidal Angels are accompanied in this tour by our beloved Crimson Fire as well as by the uprising Fusion Bomb.

Saturday night is approaching, I’ve already arrived at Backstage by the Mill, and while it’s cold and raining non-stop outside, inside the venue it’s starting to feel tropical, as Crimson Fire are the first to take the stage. Since 2004 and based in Athens, Crimson Fire give us stardust and earth/booty shaking 80’s power metal that takes you to epic times when heavy metal was a way of life.

Crimson Fire take to the stage and they know how to make you have a blast, and the only thing that’s for sure is that they did Set the Night on Fire, indeed, at the now packed Backstage by the Mill, with an amazing setlist filled with selections from their most recent album Another Dimension (2021), as well as their older hits. 

Crimson Fire’s recipe for success includes powerful and velvety, nostalgic vocals, virtuosic guitars and rocksteady rhythm section with bass and drums that just won’t let you stop headbanging-booty shaking.

And if you add their stage presence, their snazziness, authenticity and obvious love for what they do… Voilà! 

It was my first time seeing Crimson Fire live and one thing is for sure, they left me looking forward to the next one! Great show guys, it was a pleasure, until the next time!

And after Crimson Fire have ignited the flames and have warmed us up for good, it’s the turn of Fusion Bomb from Luxembourg. With a full studio album to their credit, (Concrete Jungle, 2019) and a recent EP (Fusion Bomb, 2023) these guys are bursting with thrash energy. 

First time for me listening to them and I heard obvious old school Bay Area influences with a dash of their more polished, new-age hardcore unique own sound. It’s always a little hard to give a full opinion when you don’t already know the band before seeing them live. 

But what I can say for sure is that Fusion Bomb firstly they gave us a very beautiful top-notch performance, their energy was amazing and most importantly of all, when I got home I wanted to discover more of their music. And for me this is a win-win!

And the time has come for these four boys who go by the name of Suicidal Angels to take the stage and give us an unforgettable live show. I will try to be short and concise…with an emphasis on I will try! ‘If you’ve seen Suicidal Angels live before you know that at the end of the night the key phrase is… ” what have we experienced again tonight!” Well, and this time nothing has changed, as the key phrase remains the same…just in its superlative degree.

Jaws….with Orpheus, Angelos, Gus and Nick coming out in succession on stage, and the audience eager to “fight”. When the Lions Die is the first song of the night from the guys and being the first single released from Profane Prayer, which blew us away, definitely the best choice to start the show.

To top it off, Crypt of Madness raised the temperature even higher inside Backstage by the Mill, with Orpheus Tzortzopoulos and Angelos Lelikakis giving our necks a proper boot-camp based workout! 

And of course it is needless to say that our cervical spines did not regain their correct alignment until after the end of the live, since they were left in the experienced hands of these two rhythm masters, who in a magical way can create a controlled rhythmic frenzy! 

The majestic guitars of Gus Drax are in complete harmony with the sharp guitars and powerful vocals of Nick Melissourgos, which of course implies the fiery and fierce musical attack with pure sharp riffs, amazing jaw-dropping Gus solos and that characteristic addictive tone of Nick telling us “the knife goes deeper, return of the reaper…” with both of them leading us to a melodic Thrash paradise. 

We are born of….Nick tells us compellingly, magnetizing us and inviting us to finish the verse…just before Orpheus’ drums catch fire and just before Gus and Angelos start to attack the stage with Born of Hate and Years of Aggression following, taking us back to a very good album that unfortunately Suicidal Angels didn’t manage to tour because of the pandemic. But the compensation for all the lost of the pandemic is here for us, as Suicidal Angels are back stronger than ever, as fire raging with a killer Profane Prayer, but we hope for them too, as our love and support was never lost.

An exceptional performance and a fiery and delicious setlist was given to us by Suicidal Angels this rainy night in Paris, with many songs from Profane Prayer of course, but also with machine gun songs from the rest of their discography. We all know that we are dealing with four very good and experienced musicians individually, so we know that performance-wise it was an excellent live, as these guys never disappoint and never bargain the quality of everything they do.

But for me what makes this and every Suicidal Angels live show unique, is how much they elevate each other, how much they love what they do and how hard they all work together to have this result. Suicidal Angels work very hard for their dream, because let’s face it, that’s the only way the dream becomes reality, and we are very lucky to be able to live that dreamy reality with them. And for that, we can only thank them!
