Υπάρχει αρκετή επαναληψιμότητα ως προς την γενική ατμόσφαιρα,κάτι που ίσως να γίνεται εντονότερο από το γεγονός πως οι συνθέσεις είναι σε γενικές γραμμές “άδειες”, βασισμένες πάνω στην παρουσία του πιάνου και των διάφορων synths, με σπανιότερη την εμφάνιση κάποιου ρυθμικού οργάνου. Έχοντας πει αυτό βέβαια, θα πρέπει να τονίσω πως επ ουδενί δεν έχουμε να κάνουμε με κακές συνθέσεις. O Vikram είναι ένας εκπληκτικός μουσικός και συνθέτης. Απλά αντιλαμβάνεστε πως μία κάποια αίσθηση “στασιμότητας” είναι αναπόφευκτη.

Κάτι ακόμα που γίνεται αντιληπτό είναι πως ο Tom Englund έχει περιοριστεί πολύ σε ένα συγκεκριμένο φωνητικό μοτίβο, τόσο τονικά όσο και μελωδικά, ένα μοτίβο το οποίο είναι κοινό σε όλα του τα συγκροτήματα. Φυσικά, δεν χωράει αμφιβολία για το πόσο ευαισθησία κρύβεται στην φωνή του, ούτε το πόσο αποτελεσματικά καταφέρνει να σε πάρει μαζί του, αλλά στο τέλος της ημέρας, δυστυχώς ακούγεται παντού ίδιος σε όλα. Έχει χαθεί  το που ξεκινάν οι EVERGREY  και που σταματούν οι SILENT SKIES, πραγματικά , πολλά από τα κομμάτια τα οποία κοσμούν το Dormant θα μπορούσαν με μεγάλη άνεση να περιλαμβάνονται σε κάποια από τις τελευταίες κυκλοφορίες των EVERGREY.

Συνοψίζοντας και προσπαθώντας να βάλω σε μια σειρά τις σκέψεις μου, το Dormant δεν είναι κακός δίσκος. Περιλαμβάνει πολύ όμορφες συνθέσεις όπως τα New Life και Tides που όμως μετά την γενική ακρόαση νομίζω ότι σε χάνουν στο σύνολο τους. Μάλλον αδιάφορες θα συμπληρώσω οι 3 διασκευές στα The Trooper, Dancing In The Dark και Numb των IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Springsteen και LINKIN PARK αντίστοιχα, με την πρώτη δε να είναι ανούσια. Τους στίχους μάλλον δεν τους διάβασε ποτέ κανείς. Αυτό που σου μένει είναι η ατμόσφαιρα στο εν τέλη. Αν σου κάνει έχει καλώς, αν πάλι όχι, δεν τρέχει και τίποτα.

I have to admit that this particular assignment has given me a lot of trouble. Because SILENT SKIES musically the most “correct” term to describe the band is pop, melancholic but pop. And indeed, if there is something that fully encloses Dormant is melancholy. Not the one that throws you into the deepest and most difficult depths, but the one that allows you to travel, to enjoy this sweet occasional feeling, especially as the weather gets colder.

There is repetitiveness in terms of the general atmosphere, something that is perhaps made more intense by the fact that the compositions are generally “empty”, based on the presence of the piano and the various synths, with the rare appearance of a rhythmic instrument. Having said that, of course, I must stress that we are by no means dealing with bad compositions. Vikram is an exceptional musician and composer. You just realize that a certain sense of “stagnation” is unavoidable.

Something else that becomes apparent is that  Tom Englund has become “trapped” into a certain vocal pattern, both tonally and melodically, a pattern that he now carries in all his projects.  Of course, there’s no doubting the sensitivity hidden in his voice, nor how effectively he manages to carry you along, but at the end of the day, unfortunately, he sounds the same everywhere in everything. It’s also the boundary’s that are lost, where EVERGREY starts and where SILENT SKIES stops, really, many of the tracks that adorn Dormant could very easily be included on one of EVERGREY‘s latest releases.

Summing up and trying to put my thoughts in order, Dormant is not a bad album. It includes very beautiful compositions like New Life and Tides but after a general listen I think they lose you as a whole. As far as the  3 covers on The Trooper, Dancing In The Dark and Numb by IRON MAIDEN, Bruce Springsteen and LINKIN PARK respectively, they sound kind of unnecessary. The lyrics were probably never read by anyone. What you are left with in the end of Dormant is the atmosphere. If that is ok with and for you, all good, if it’s not…
