Μένοντας στα ίδια μουσικά μονοπάτια, αυτά του heavy/doom, το Ecclesia Militans πάει τα πράγματα ένα βήμα παραπέρα, διατηρώντας όμως αυτή την πιο βόρεια χροιά ως προς την προσέγγιση του ήχου τους. Τα vibes των SORCERER είναι ιδιαίτερα αισθητά, ίσως και μια ιδέα από την μεσαία περίοδο των NOCTURNAL RITES ως προς το κομμάτι των riffs.  Αν κάτι χαρακτηρίζει νομίζω το album είναι η πλούσια κιθαριστική δουλειά. Πληθώρα από riff, το ένα καλύτερο από το προηγούμενο, άλλοτε σε εντελώς heavy/power αισθητική, άλλοτε σε doom ρυθμικά μονοπάτια και σε σημεία φλερτάρει και με πιο extreme χροιές. Παρόλο που πραγματικά η κιθαριστική δουλειά είναι πλήρως απολαυστική, συνθετικά το πρώτο αγκάθι του Ecclesia Militans εντοπίζεται στην ανάπτυξη και εξέλιξη των ιδεών κατά την άποψη μου. Υπάρχει μια έντονη αίσθηση επανάληψης τόσο στην ρυθμική πλευρά όσο και στον τρόπο που ξεδιπλώνεται το κάθε κομμάτι. Κοινώς, μειώνει από την ποικιλία κατά την ακρόαση, ενώ υπάρχει υλικό ως προς τα κιθαριστικά riff για να καλύψει κάθε ανάγκη, η πλαισίωση και επέκταση τους κατ εμέ είναι το σημείο που η κατάσταση γίνεται λίγο μονότονη. 

Κάτι που δυστυχώς ακολουθεί και επεκτείνεται και στο δεύτερο highlight του album, αυτό της φωνής. Χαρισματικότατος ο Arnhwald R, με εντυπωσιακότατο εύρος τόσο σε έκταση όσο και σε χρώμα. Η άνεση του στις πιο ψηλές συχνοτικές περιοχές είναι εξίσου πορωτικές όσο και με τις πιο μεσαίες γρεζάτες αλλά και τις ημί brutal. Πάρα πολύ όμορφα hooks αλλά και γέφυρες/περάσματα κατά την διάρκεια του δίσκου, με φράσεις που πραγματικά σου μένουν, αλλά χωρίς να καταφέρνει και αυτός να αποφύγει την παγίδα της επαναληψημότητας στις γραμμές του αλλά και στον τρόπο με τον οποίο “στήνει” την ατμόσφαιρα. 

Για να ξεκαθαρίσω το τοπίο, το Ecclesia Militans δεν είναι ένα κακό ή βαρετό album, αντιθέτως ίσως να είναι και καλύτερο από τον προκάτοχό του. Απλά με τα παραπάνω θέματα στερεί από τον εαυτό του στο 90 το να ανέβει σε ακόμα μεγαλύτερες θέσεις και κατά κάποιο τρόπο βάζει τρικλοποδιά στα κατά τα άλλα τόσο δυνατά του σημεία. Θα μπορούσαμε να μιλάμε για τρομερά δυνατή κυκλοφορία, αλλά θα περιοριστούμε στο απλά αρκετά καλή. Βέβαια, κομμάτια σαν τα If She Floats, Ecclesia Militans και Ereptor Verae Fidei αρκούν για να σώσουν την κατάσταση.

It may have taken them 4 whole years since their debut album, but ECCLESIA from France are back with a vengeance with Ecclesia Militans. The truth is that the band made their presence felt enough with their first album, which made sure that they kept their musical standards high in their new musical venture.  

Staying on the same musical paths, those of heavy/doom, Ecclesia Militans take things one step further, but maintaining that more northern tone in their approach to their sound. The SORCERER vibes are particularly noticeable, maybe even a hint of the middle period of NOCTURNAL RITES in terms of the riffs part.  If there’s one thing that I think characterizes the album, it’s the rich guitar work. Plenty of riffs, each one better than the last, sometimes in a completely heavy/power aesthetic, sometimes in doom rhythmic paths and in some parts flirting with more extreme tones. Although the guitar work is actually fully enjoyable, compositionally the first thorn in Ecclesia Militans‘ side is found in the development and evolution of ideas in my opinion. There is a strong sense of repetition in both the rhythmic aspect and the way each track unfolds. Collectively, it feels like from the variety upon listening, while there is material in terms of guitar riffs to meet every need, the development and expansion  in my opinion is where things get a little monotonous. 

Something that unfortunately follows and extends to the second highlight of the album, that of the voice. Arnhwald R is charismatic, with an impressive range and colour. His comfort in the higher frequency ranges is just as porous as with the more mid-range aggressive ones, as well as the semi-brutal ones. Very beautiful hooks but also bridges/passages throughout the album, with phrases that really stick with you, but without managing to avoid the trap of repetitiveness in his lines but also in the way he “sets up” the atmosphere. 

To be clear, Ecclesia Militans is not a bad or boring album, on the contrary it might even be better than its predecessor. It’s just that with the above issues it deprives itself in the last minute sort of speak, of rising to even greater heights and somehow trips up its otherwise strong points. We could talk about a tremendously strong release, but we’ll limit ourselves to just good enough. Of course, tracks like If She Floats, Ecclesia Militans and Ereptor Verae Fidei are enough to save the day.
