Εγώ! Ένοχη το παραδέχομαι! Όπως επίσης παραδέχομαι ότι η σχέση μου με αυτούς τους Σουηδούς είναι σαν αυτό το ερωτικό απωθημένο που πάνω που πας να τον ξεπεράσεις με κάτι καινούριο έρχεται και σου πετάει ένα χαμόγελο, μια ματιά και σου θυμίζει όοοολους εκείνους τους λόγους για τους οποίους είναι το απόλυτο απωθημένο που εξακολουθεί να σε καίει. Όταν η AFM που θα κυκλοφορήσει το Escape Of The Phoenix στις 26 Φεβρουαρίου 2021, έστειλε στο mail μου το νέο Evergrey το κοίταξα με καχυποψία και τη διάθεση να το κατακρεουργήσω σε περίπτωση που δεν φανεί αντάξιο των προσδοκιών μου. Οπότε με το φρύδι ελαφρώς ανασηκωμένο και το στυλό στο χέρι για να κρατάω σημειώσεις πάτησα το Play….

Το άλμπουμ ξεκινά με το ήδη δημοσιευμένο Forever Outsider που ομολογουμένως δεν είναι και κάτι καινοτόμο για τη μπάντα… οπότε το ακούω αδιάφορα και παραμένω σκεπτική. Και μπαίνει το Where August Mourn, οπότε και χαμηλώνει το φρύδι η καχυποψία γίνεται γνήσια περιέργεια, ενθουσιασμός με τα υπέροχα πλήκτρα και τις ιδέες του και τώρα αρχίζει η δίψα για συνέχεια… που δεν αργεί να έρθει γιατί με την αμέσως επόμενη σύνθεση Stories η ερμηνεία του Tom, η μελωδία, το σόλο είναι πραγματικά από τα πιο μαγευτικά που θα μπορούσαν να προσφέρουν. Αυτούς τους Evergrey θέλουμε! Να μας συνεπαίρνουν και να μας ταξιδεύουν!

Επόμενο σημείο που θα σταθώ είναι η συνεργασία με τον James LaBrie στο The Beholder. Αρχικά να ξεκαθαρίσω ότι εγώ ουδέποτε υπήρξα Theatreάκιας οπότε δεν περίμενα πως και πως να ακούσω τη συνεργασία. Θα πω ότι το τραγούδι είναι μια ώριμη καλοδουλεμένη σύνθεση και ο LaBrie «έκατσε εκεί σε μια γωνίτσα να μην ενοχλεί». Το τελικό σύνολο όμορφο αλλά για μένα όχι η πιο εντυπωσιακή στιγμή του άλμπουμ.

Αυτή η πιο εντυπωσιακή στιγμή του άλμπουμ για μένα είναι το  In The Absence Of Sun. Αυτό το τραγούδι, αυτή η μελωδία είναι σαν να ακούς τις τελευταίες ακτίνες του ήλιου την ώρα που δύει να στάζουν πάνω στα πλήκτρα πριν ξεχυθεί ορμητικό να το παρασύρει το σκοτάδι της νύχτας. Απίστευτη μελωδία, βαθιά μελαγχολική και πλούσια σε συναίσθημα. Εξαιρετικό Leaden Saint με την πιο πολύπλοκα δομημένη κλιμακωτή μελωδία. Επόμενο σημείο το ομότιτλο κυρίως για τους στίχους του που όπως αναφέρει ο Englund είναι η αποτύπωση του συναισθήματος της απόδρασης από την «αναγκαστική» αναγέννηση. Εξαιρετικά ερωτεύσιμο σόλο στο You From You και έντονα φορτισμένοι στίχοι που χτυπάνε εκεί που πονάει και τέλος το Run με το δυναμισμό και τη μελαγχολία να χορεύουν πάνω σε μια λεπτή οριακή κλωστή.

Θεωρώ ότι η πανδημία και το γεγονός ότι η μπάντα είχε την ευκαιρία να αφοσιωθεί στη σύνθεση και την παραγωγή τους έδωσε την ευκαιρία να εμβαθύνουν στη μουσική τους, να την εμπλουτίσουν με ιδέες, με σόλο που γοητεύουν και μια παραγωγή προσεγμένη μέχρι την τελευταία λεπτομέρεια. Με το Atlantic είχαν βάλει μόνοι τους τον πήχη πολύ ψηλά, και ήταν μεγάλο το στοίχημα να βγάλουν κάτι ισάξιο αν όχι καλύτερο, και το κέρδισαν.

Είδες που τελικά κάποιες φορές η συνέχεια είναι πολύ διαφορετική από την πρώτη εντύπωση; Είδες που τελικά το Escape Of The Phoenix είναι μια εξαιρετική συνέχεια μετά το The Atlantic που αποδεικνύει ότι 12 άλμπουμ μετά οι Evergrey παραμένουν πιο σύγχρονοι από ποτέ και τόσο δημιουργικoί, όσο θα ζήλευαν 20ρηδες που τώρα ξεκινάνε; Δεν έχω τίποτα περισσότερο να πω απλά πάτα το play, τα υπόλοιπα τα αναλαμβάνει η μπάντα….

ENGLISH VERSION

If I had to choose only one reason I love Evergrey it would be the melodies and the lyrics that can be the brushes to paint an entire horizon before you and transcend you in a world of their own. You might say, weren’t you the one who was complaining about the first two singles that you had  higher expectations  of them?

Yeap! Guilty as charged! But I also have the guts to admit that my releationship with these particular band is like that love “the one that got away” and just when you’re about to get over it with something new, it only takes a smile, or a look to remind you all of the reasons for which it remains in your heart and it still burns. When AFM Records which will release the album on Ferbuary 26^th emailed me the new Evergrey, I stared at the screen with some suspicion and the mood to dig deep in case it failed to fulfill my expectations. So, with a raised eyebrow and my pen at hand to take notes, I pressed play!

The album opens with the already published in video Forever Outsider which to be quite frank isn’t something new for the band. So, I listened and remained skeptical. And then there comes Where August Mourn and I am triggered with curiosity, enthusiasm and thirst for more… which is immediately quenched with Stories which includes an amazing vocal performance by Tom, the melody, the solo which sounds enchanting… That’s the Evergrey we want! The ones that can sweep you off your feet and take you away…

Next stop is the guest appearance of James LaBrie in The Beholder. Firstly, let me state that even though I appreciate Dream Theatre I have never been a huge fan, so I wasn’t holding my breath to listen to this guest appearance.  The song is a well-established song and LaBrie is holding a small role. The end result is nice but not the most impressive moment in the album.

Talking about the most impressive moment of the album, for me that’s In The Absence Of Sun. That song, that melody…it’’ like you can hear the last rays of the sun dripping on the keys just before the rush of darkness that floods the sky to burst into the night. Incredible melody, deep, melancholic, rich in emotion. Exceptional Leaden Saint with a most complex escalating melody. Next special point is the title track with the very personal lyrics which as Englund mentions are the reflection of the feeling of the phoenix who wants to escape the “obligatory” resurrection of its ashes. Loveable solo in You From You and very intense lyrics that hit straight to the point and in the end “Run” with passion and melancholy dancing on a thin thread.

I feel that the pandemic and the fact that the band had the chance to devote solely on writing the album helped them dig deeper into the music and the production. This made the result richer in ideas, the solo parts more seductive and the production carefully attended to the last detail. With Atlantic they had set the bar too high and it was a big bet to manage to release something equally good or better, and they won.

So you see sometimes what happens after the first impression is much different. You see that Escape Of The Phoenix is a great continuance to The Atlantic and proves that 12 albums later Evergrey remain fresh, current and would make 20yearolds jealous. I have no more to say, press play and the band will take care of the rest…

Το εντυπωσιακό δε για το Eternal Nocturnal είναι ότι συνοδεύεται από βίντεο κλιπ με την υπογραφή του ταλαντούχου Patric Ullaeus. Γραμμένο και ηχογραφημένο κατά τη διάρκεια της πανδημίας το νέο άλμπουμ της μπάντας “Escape Of The Phoenix“ ετοιμάστηκε σύμφωνα με το πρόγραμμα που είχε ήδη από το 2019. Ο Englund και ο drummer Jonas Ekdahl ξεκίνησαν τη σύνθεση των τραγουδιών τον Ιανουάριο δημιουργώντας τη βάση για το νέο άλμπουμ.

Σε αντίθεση με τη συνηθισμένη δημιουργική διαδικασία που διακόπτεται από περιοδείες και μεμονομένες συναυλίες αυτή τη φορά το lockdown έδωσε στην μπάντα τον πολύτιμο χρόνο να δουλέψει απερίσπαστη, Το αποτέλεσμα είναι 11 τραγούδια που ενσωματώνουν όλα όσα περιμένουν οι οπαδοί του συγκροτήματος. Όπως αναφέρουν ο Englund & ο παραγωγός Jacob Hansen χαρακτηριστικά «μια πιο metal version του “The Atlantic”, με τραγούδια που είναι πιο άμεσα». Το νέο άλμπουμ κυκλοφορεί 26 Φεβρουαρίου 2021 από την AFM Records.
