Hell, Fire And Damnation λοιπόν μας λένε οι γερόλυκοι, πρώτη φορά χωρίς τον Paul Quinn στις τάξεις τους, όπως και πρώτη φορά με τον Brian Tatler στην σύνθεση τόσο του συγκροτήματος όσο και των ιδίων των συνθέσεων. Μπορώ να γίνω πολύ λιτός και απλός στην κριτική του 24ου δίσκου των SAXON και αυτό γιατί το να περιγράψεις ή να αναφέρεις τα αυτονόητα δεν απαιτεί πολλά λόγια. Και αυτονόητα είναι, όχι γιατί τα γούστα μου είναι αυτά που είναι, αλλά γιατί οι SAXON δεν έχουν πατήσει στραβά από το 79’, δεν νομίζω να ξεκινήσουν τώρα. Οπότε θα αρχίσω λέγοντας τα εξής.

Είναι μία υπερκλασική δουλειά, με τον γνώριμο ήχο των τελευταίων 20 χρόνων της πορείας τους. Αρκετά κοντά σε αυτό που έκαναν στο Carpe Diem που προηγήθηκε με μικρές αλλά ουσιαστικές διαφορές. Τούτο εδώ κινείται στην πιο σκληρή ή επιθετική ίσως πλευρά του συγκροτήματος σαν σύνολο. Πιο βαριές συνθέσεις, πιο σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα, υπερ-riff-αρες που πραγματικά δεν μπορώ να διανοηθώ από που τις κατεβάζουν και solos με το τσουβάλι. Λιγότερο γρήγορα κομμάτια, mid-tempo αισθητική στο 85% της διάρκειας του album και μία ευχάριστη ροή που σε κάνει να μην αντιλαμβάνεσαι πόσο γρήγορα ολοκληρώνεται η ακρόαση ολόκληρου του δίσκου. Την τιμητική τους σαν κομμάτια έχουν το Madam Guilotine, There’s Something In Roswell, 1066 με λίγο έξτρα μάθημα ιστορίας που είναι πάντα ευχάριστο και ευπρόσδεκτο και το Super Charger. Θα μείνω λίγο στο εναρκτήριο riff του There’s Something… για το πόσο βαρύ και επιβλητικά σκοτεινό κατορθώνουν να το κάνουν να ακούγεται οι “μπαρμπάδες” σε αντίθεση με άλλους πολύ “άγριους και κακούς” μεταλλάδες της εποχής.

Aυτό που μου προκάλεσε πραγματικά εντύπωση αυτή την φορά είναι κάτι ολίγον τι, παράδοξο. Ενώ συνθετικά ίσως υστερεί λίγο μπροστά στον προκάτοχο του στο θέμα εμβληματικών ή ανθεμικών συνθέσεων, με πιο χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα αυτό του The Pilgrimage, όλα μα όλα τα κομμάτια του έχουν φοβερά δουλεμένα και πανέμορφα middle sections, καταφέρνοντας να κρύβουν κατά κάποιο τρόπο κομμάτια μέσα σε κομμάτια (inception γίναμε). Θα αποφύγω να αναφερθώ έστω και λίγο στο κομμάτι επίδοση/απόδοση, γελάω απλά με τον τρόπο που μας “γλεντάνε” τα παππούδια, όχι τώρα, εδώ και δεκαετίες. Παραγωγή φοβερή για ακόμα μια φορά από τον Andy Sneap (τα ακούτε εκεί στους PRIEST; ) και εξωφυλλάρα εντελώς Thrash αισθητικής.

Σε γενική εικόνα το Hell, Fire And Damnation είναι μία πολύ άνω του μετρίου κυκλοφορία, ισάξια του τι προηγήθηκε, με τους SAXON να ακούγονται λίγο στο ρελαντί και ταυτόχρονα να κατορθώνουν να κρατάνε την τρομακτική ποιότητα και αξία που τους χαρακτηρίζει και στο 24ο δισκογραφικό παιδί τους. Και ανάθεμα, πιστεύω ότι θα προλάβουν να σκαρώσουν τουλάχιστον ακόμα έναν. Σοκ, δέος και σεβασμός!!!

Every SAXON release is a joyous event, apart from the fact that they still manage to keep their record date inviolable every 2 heavy 3 years for 24 full length albums is glorious, if anything you know that you will hear classic heavy in the highest quality and that it will be a really good release. No risks here, unlike other bands of their generation or fame.

So, Hell, Fire And Damnation these old guys are saying to us all, first time without Paul Quinn in their ranks, as well as first time with Brian Tatler in the line-up of the band and the compositions themselves. I can be very simple and straightforward in the review of SAXON‘s 24th album and that’s because describing or stating the obvious doesn’t require many words. And self-evident they are, not because my tastes in music are what they are, but because SAXON have not gone wrong since 79′, I don’t think they will start now. So I’ll start by saying the following.

It’s a classic work, with the familiar sound of the last 20 years of their career. Pretty close to what they did on Carpe Diem that preceded it with minor but substantial differences. This one moves to perhaps the harder or more aggressive side of the band as a whole. Heavier compositions, darker atmosphere, super-riffs that I really can’t imagine where they get them off and a handful of solos. Less fast tracks, mid-tempo aesthetic for 85% of the album’s duration and a pleasant flow that makes you not realize how quickly the whole album’s listening is completed. Taking pride of place as tracks are Madame Guillotine, There’s Something In Roswell, 1066 with a little extra history lesson which is always enjoyable and welcome and Super Charger. I’ll dwell a bit on the opening riff of There’s Something… on how heavy and imposingly dark the “old yellers” manage to make it sound unlike other very “bad, mean and evil” metalheads of our times.

What really struck me this time is something a little bit paradoxical. While compositionally it perhaps lags a bit behind his predecessor in terms of iconic or enduring compositions, most notably that of The Pilgrimage, all but all of his tracks have terrifically crafted and gorgeous middle sections, managing to somehow hide tracks within tracks (inception style haha). I’ll refrain from even mentioning the performance part, I just laugh at the way the old-timers have been cracking their asses off  with us all, not just now, for decades. Awesome production once again by Andy Sneap (do you hear that over there in PRIEST?) and a cover with a completely Thrash aesthetic.

In general Hell, Fire And Damnation is a very above average release, equal to what preceded it, with SAXON sounding a bit idle and at the same time managing to keep the mind blowing quality and value that characterizes them in their 24th album. And I’ll be damned, I think they are going to manage to release at least one more. Shock, awe and respect!!!!
