Η Θεσσαλονίκη πάντοτε είχε πληθώρα από πολύ καλούς μουσικούς, ιδιαίτερα στα πιο ακραία μονοπάτια και οι περίπτωση των IGNOMINOUS αποτελεί σύμπραξη τριών τέτοιων μουσικών με έντονη και μακρόχρονη παρουσία στην σκηνή. Το συγκρότημα αποτελείται από τον  Ανέστη Nekhromancer στο μπάσο και την φωνή, η θητεία του οποίου στους TERRORDROME είναι μνημειώδης, τον Billy Vongaar στα τύμπανα (YOTH IRIA, ex-HEAD CLEANER, TERRORDROME) που το πιθανότερο είναι να έχει παίξει στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ακραίας σκηνής της χώρας με ποιο πρόσφατη παρουσία στους YOTH IRIA και τον Χρήστο Κοσμίδη των ιστορικών για την συμπρωτεύουσα REGENT στην κιθάρα και τα καθαρά φωνητικά.

Παρόλο το βεβαρημένο death metal ιστορικό και των τριών, το Dawn With No Light είναι ένα καθαρό και γνήσιο παιδί του mid 90s black metal. Και λέω γνήσιο γιατί τόσο συνθετικά όσο και στην γενική ατμόσφαιρα και προσέγγιση δεν φεύγει σχεδόν καθόλου από τα τέλη της συγκεκριμένης δεκαετίας. Κοινώς, οι IGNOMINOUS δεν εφευρίσκουν τον τροχό ούτε ακολουθούν τον ήχο του σήμερα, ευτυχώς αν με ρωτάτε. Είναι τόσο αναζωογονητικό το να μπορείς να ακούς τόσο καλά δοσμένη και ποιοτική black metal ακόμα και αν είναι “old school”. Ταυτόχρονα βέβαια κατορθώνεται και η αποφυγή του να μυρίζει “ψοφίμι” (μουσικά πάντα, κατά τα άλλα μια χαρά ζόφος) το όλο εγχείρημα και σε αυτό τεράστιο ρόλο παίζει η πολύ προσεγμένη παραγωγή. Υπάρχει πολύ μουσική ακόμα μέσα σε αυτή την παλαιότερη οδό και προσέγγιση, αρκεί να έχεις τον τρόπο να την παρουσιάσεις σωστά, κάτι που το συγκρότημα κάνει με τον καλύτερο τρόπο. 

Συνθετικά το Dawn With No Light τα πάει εξαιρετικά, με πολύ δυνατές αναφορές σε μπάντες όπως οι SATYRICON, οι EMPEROR και ίσως και οι IMMORTAL σε στιγμές, καταφέρνοντας να διατηρήσει την ισορροπία ανάμεσα σε περιεκτικότητα και διάρκεια με το κάθε κομμάτι να παρουσιάζει αρκετές αλλαγές κρατώντας όμως την συνολική διάρκεια του album στα 39 λεπτά. Όλα τα πιθανά κλισέ δίνουν το παρόν αλλά είναι ο τρόπος που έχουν ενταχθεί στα κομμάτια που πρακτικά λειτουργούν υπέρ αντί να στερούν του αποτελέσματος. Βάλε και λίγο και την προσθήκη πλήκτρων και επιλεγμένων ενορχηστρώσεων και έχεις ότι ακριβώς χρειάζεται. Για τον Βασίλη δεν τολμώ να πω κουβέντα, το επίπεδο του είναι μη διαπραγματεύσιμο όπως και η συμβολή του στην σκηνή. Τα φωνητικά του Ανέστη σίγουρα αποτελούν ένα από τα δυνατότερα χαρτιά και η κιθαριστική δουλειά είναι αψεγάδιαστη. 

Το Dawn With No Light είναι μία πολύ πλήρης, προσεγμένη και καλή δουλειά, κάτι που ενισχύεται ακόμα παραπάνω από το γεγονός ότι αποτελεί ντεμπούτο. Τρομερά κατασταλαγμένο και ξεκάθαρο μεν, ντεμπούτο δε. Αν το ξεκίνημα είναι αυτό, η συνέχεια προμηνύεται ακόμα καλύτερη.

The revival of the black metal scene of our country seems to be intense in the last few years which is even more positive since it is accompanied by quality and high level releases. One such release is the debut of IGNOMINOUS.       

Thessaloniki has always had an abundance of very good musicians, especially in the most extreme musical paths and the case of IGNOMINOUS is a collaboration of three such musicians with an intense and long-lasting presence on the scene. The band consists of Anestis Nekhromancer on bass and vocals, whose tenure in TERRORDROME is monumental, Billy Vongaar on drums (YOTH IRIA, ex-HEAD CLEANER, TERRORDROME) who has most likely played in most of the country’s extreme scene, most recently in YOTH IRIA and Christos Kosmidis of REGENT on guitar and clean vocals.

Despite the heavy death metal background of all three of them, Dawn With No Light is a pure and genuine child of mid 90s black metal. And I say genuine because both compositionally and in the general atmosphere and approach it hardly leaves the end of that decade. In common, IGNOMINOUS don’t invent the wheel nor do they follow the sound of today, fortunately if you ask me. It’s so refreshing to be able to listen to such well-structured and quality black metal even if it’s “old school”. At the same time, of course, the whole project manages to avoid smelling “dead” (musically always, otherwise it’s a fine gloom) and the very careful production plays a huge role in that. There’s a lot of music still in this older route and approach, as long as you have the way to present it properly, which the band does in the best way possible. 

Compositionally Dawn With No Light is doing extremely well, with very strong references to bands like SATYRICON, EMPEROR and maybe even IMMORTAL at times, managing to maintain the balance between content and duration with each track presenting several changes but keeping the overall duration of the album at 39 minutes. All the possible clichés are present but it’s the way they have been integrated into the tracks that practically work in favor instead of taking away from the effect. Throw in the addition of keyboards and selected instrumentation and you have just what you need. I dare not say a word about Vasilis, his level is non-negotiable as is his contribution to the scene. Anestis’ vocals are definitely one of the strongest cards and the guitar work is flawless. 

Dawn With No Light is a very complete, thorough and good work, something that is even more enhanced by the fact that it is a debut album. Incredibly settled and clear as to the musical direction on the one hand, and a debut on the other. If this is the beginning, the continuation bodes even better.
