Οι IRON MAIDEN ολοκλήρωσαν πρόσφατα το πρώτο σκέλος της περιοδείας “The Future Past”.

Το “The Future Past” περιλαμβάνει τραγούδια που δεν είχαν παρουσιαστεί μέχρι τώρα από το πιο πρόσφατο studio album των MAIDEN, “Senjutsu”, μαζί με έμφαση στο LP “Somewhere In Time” του 1986, καθώς και άλλα κλασικά κομμάτια.

In a new interview with Dave Gleeson of Australia’s Triple M radio station, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson was asked how he and his bandmates have been able to incorporate a lot of new material into their setlist, seemingly without much pushback from their fans. He responded (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “Well, yeah, that’s because they — that’s because, strangely, they actually like the music. [Laughs] Which is bizarre, isn’t it? I know that’s a really weird concept now — where people actually go to a show to listen to the music. But it’s because we’re not fashion icons or anything else like that. We’ve always been — how can I put it? We’re not like Michelin star chef-type grub; we’re meat and potatoes. And it’s straightforward, what people come to see is. I mean, the songs are not necessarily straightforward, but the attitude is. And we still play all the songs in the original key; we don’t drop, downtune and stuff like that. We still play everything too fast, because we’re all excited. We’ve never played to click tracks or like time code and everything else now, ’cause I see a lot of bands now, and I’m going, ‘Hang on a minute. Hey, you sang that without moving your lips.’ So there’s all this backing vocals being flown in left, right and center and everything. But we don’t do any of that. Everything is analog and real. So we are kind of old school in that respect. But I think that pays dividends ’cause the audience understand that reality is increasingly kind of rare now.”

IRON MAIDEN recently completed the 2023 leg of “The Future Past” tour.

“The Future Past” features previously unperformed songs from MAIDEN‘s most recent studio album, “Senjutsu”, along with a focus on 1986’s “Somewhere In Time” LP, plus other classic cuts.

DG- Υπέθεσα ότι μέχρι τώρα είχε γίνει γνωστό ότι ο Brian Mcalpin αποσύρθηκε από τις περιοδείες λόγω των τεράστιων κινδύνων για την υγεία του. Κανείς μας δεν είχε την καρδιά να βγει με κάποιον στη θέση του, οπότε φαίνεται ότι οι Psychotic δεν θα περιοδεύσουν ξανά. Αυτό πραγματικά μου ραγίζει την καρδιά. Σε όλους μας.

Περιμένουμε να παρουσιάσετε ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ The Bleeding στην εκπομπή σας. Πείτε μας για τη μετατροπή του ώστε να ταιριάζει σε μια ακουστική συναυλία και ποιες είναι οι προσδοκίες σας από αυτό.

DG- Πολλά από τα τραγούδια έχουν αναδιαταχθεί με νέες ακροάσεις συγχορδιών για να μεταφραστούν σε μια ακουστική κατάσταση τύπου “τραγουδοποιού”. Οι μελωδίες είναι σχεδόν πανομοιότυπες, μόνο που οι δυναμικές τους είναι πιο κατάλληλες για ένα ακουστικό περιβάλλον. Υπάρχουν μερικά τραγούδια των οποίων οι δομές των συγχορδιών παραμένουν λίγο-πολύ άθικτες. Απλά ξαναέγραψα τις ακολουθίες συγχορδιών στα πιο μονοτονικά βασισμένα riffs που δεν λειτουργούν καλά χωρίς ηλεκτρική κιθάρα και μπάντα. Μου αρέσουν πολύ αυτές οι ενορχηστρώσεις. Ελπίζω να τις αγαπήσετε κι εσείς.

Οι Psychotic Waltz αποτελούν τεράστια έμπνευση για πολλούς μουσικούς. Πιστεύετε ότι πήραν την αναγνώριση που τους αξίζει; Θα μπορούσαν να γίνουν πιο δημοφιλείς, αν ίσως είχαν δημιουργηθεί σε μια διαφορετική εποχή;

DG- Όταν οι μουσικοί είναι η βάση των οπαδών σου, έχεις πρόβλημα εξ αρχής. Ποιος ξέρει τι θα μπορούσε να είχε γίνει. Ήλπιζα πραγματικά ότι αυτή θα ήταν η νέα μας εποχή στη δεκαετία του 2020, αλλά δυστυχώς. Δεν ήταν γραφτό να γίνει. Πολλοί κλασικοί συνθέτες δεν αναγνωρίστηκαν παρά μόνο 100 χρόνια μετά τη ζωή τους. Έτσι, μπορούμε πάντα να ελπίζουμε σε αυτό.

Πάνω σε τι εργάζεστε αυτή τη στιγμή; Εργάζεστε πάνω σε νέα μουσική;

DG- Το σχέδιο είναι το νέο άλμπουμ των Deadsoul Tribe, καθώς και ένα νέο σόλο άλμπουμ πιθανότατα. The Strange Mind of Devon Graves.

Περιμένουμε επίσης να παίξετε τραγούδια από τους Deadsoul Tribe. Τι ακριβώς μας επιφυλάσσετε;

DG- Θα παίξω το Bleeding σχεδόν ολόκληρο. Αλλά επίσης πολλά από κάθε άλμπουμ των PW και πολλά από το Deadsoul Tribe.

 Δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά που πηγαίνεις σόλο περιοδεία. Προτιμάς να πηγαίνεις σε θεματική σόλο περιοδεία παρά ως μέλος ενός συγκροτήματος;

DG- Λατρεύω να κάνω συναυλίες όπως αυτή για την απλότητα και την οικειότητά τους. Λατρεύω να τραγουδάω σε ακουστικό περιβάλλον γιατί ταιριάζει πολύ καλύτερα στη φωνή μου από πολλές απόψεις. Τραγουδάω διαφορετικά. Περισσότερη διάσταση και δυναμική. Περισσότερο συναισθηματικά. Αλλά τίποτα δεν είναι καλύτερο από το να παίζω με τους Psychotic Waltz. Θα μου λείψει τρομερά.

Μπορούμε να περιμένουμε ότι θα επαναπρογραμματίσετε τις ακυρωμένες συναυλίες των Psychotic Waltz;

First of all we would like to Welcome you in Metalradio.gr. On Monday October 9 th you are coming to Greece for a very special acoustic show. Tell us what led to the cancellations of your appearances with Psychotic Walz and if that’s the reason you are going on this solo tour.

DG- I assumed by now it was well publicised that Brian Mcalpin stepped down from touring because of the massive health risks involved for him. None of us had the heart to go out with someone in his place, so it looks like Psychotic will never tour again. That really rips my heart out. All of us.

We expect you to perform the entire The Bleeding album on your show. Tell us about the transformation to make it fit an acoustic show and what are your expectations from it.

DG-  Many of the songs have been re-arranged with new chord progressions to make them translate to an acoustic “singer-songwriter” type of situation. The melodies are nearly identical, except with more appropriate dynamics for an acoustic setting. There are a few songs whose chord structures remain more or less intact. I just re wrote the chord sequences on the more single-tonic based riffs that don’t work well without an electric guitar and a band. I really love these arrangements. I hope you all will too.

Psychotic Waltz are a huge inspiration for many musicians. Do you feel they got the recognition they deserve? Could they become more popular, if maybe they were formed in a different era?

DG-  When musicians are your fanbase you are in trouble to begin with. Who knows what could have been. I was really hoping this would have been our new era in the 2020s, but alas. It was not to be. Many classical composers werent recognised until 100 years after their lifetime. So we can always hope for that.

What are you currently working on? Are you working on new music?

DG- New Deadsoul tribe is the plan, plus a new solo album most likely. The Strange Mind of Devon Graves.

We also expect you to play songs from Deadsoul Tribe. What exactly do you have in store for us?

DG- I will be playing Bleeding pretty much in it’s entirety. But also a lot from each PW album and lot’s of Deadsoul Tribe.

It’s not the first time you go on a solo tour. Do you prefer going on special solo tour that as a member of a band?

DG- I love doing concerts like this for their simplicity and intimacy. I love singing in an acoustic setting because it suits my voice much better in many ways. I sing differently. More dimension and dynamics. More emotionally. But nothing is better that playing with Psychotic Waltz. I will miss that terribly.

Can we expect that you reschedule the cancelled Psychotic Waltz shows?

Την Ημέρα του Αγίου Πατρικίου, δημοσιεύσατε μια φωτογραφία σας με τον Ed Sheeran στην παμπ. Πώς είναι να είσαι BFFs με έναν ποπ σταρ;

“Παράξενο. Μιλάω μαζί του πολύ τακτικά τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Όπως κι εγώ, είναι ένα πραγματικό αγόρι από το Σάφολκ. Όταν ήρθε στο στούντιο εκείνη τη μέρα [για τη συνεργασία μας], δεν κατέβηκε με μια καβάτζα δημοσιογράφων- εμφανίστηκε μόνος του, με την κιθάρα στην πλάτη, με την κουκούλα των Cradle Of Filth και συνέχισε. Ήταν γαμάτο.”

Ακούγεται καλό! Μπορείτε να μας ενημερώσετε για τη συνεργασία;

“Ο Ed έχει κάνει όλα τα κομμάτια του. Εγώ έχω μόνο το μπάσο και τα φωνητικά να κάνω. Είναι ακριβώς όπως μπορείς να φανταστείς ότι θα ακούγεται, αν μπορείς να φανταστείς τον Ed Sheeran με τους Cradle Of Filth. Παίζει ακουστική κιθάρα σε αυτό, αλλά είναι βαρύ: έχει ένα blastbeat εκεί μέσα. Είναι λίγο απ’ όλα. Το σχέδιο είναι να το κάνουμε ως φιλανθρωπικό single, γιατί, πρώτα απ’ όλα, όλοι κατέληξαν στο συμπέρασμα ότι το κάνουμε αυτό για τα λεφτά και θέλαμε να το χτυπήσουμε στο κεφάλι. Ελπίζουμε να κυκλοφορήσει αυτό το καλοκαίρι”.

Είναι μια περίεργη συνεργασία, ειδικά για μια μπάντα που κάποτε κατηγορήθηκε ότι προσπάθησε να βάλει φωτιά σε μια εκκλησία στο Colchester…

“Αυτό ήταν πολύ καιρό πριν! Εκείνη η εκκλησία κάηκε πολύ καιρό πριν φτάσουμε εκεί. Όταν κάναμε μια φωτογράφιση εκεί, μας παρενόχλησε ένας όχλος που κρατούσε δίκρανα. Ήταν εκεί επειδή η εκκλησία είχε γίνει στόχος [εμπρηστών] στο παρελθόν. Ήταν χωρίς στέγη επειδή είχε καεί, υποτίθεται από μια αίρεση μαγισσών”.

Η μαμά σας εξακολουθεί να είναι ερωτευμένη με τον Tom Araya;

“Σίγουρα έχει!”

Ποια είναι η απήχηση;

“Δεν ξέρω! Δεν το βλέπω ο ίδιος. Απλά ξέρω ότι το βλέπει γιατί βλέπω λογαριασμούς στο Instagram όπως “Tom Araya lovers” και το πρώτο όνομα που βλέπω είναι της μαμάς μου. Αλλά, μιλώντας γι’ αυτές τις περίεργες οικογενειακές αντιπαραθέσεις, χθες η οικογένεια του κιθαρίστα μας Anthony ήρθε σε μια συναυλία και μας έφερε ένα αντίγραφο του [αμφιλεγόμενου ιταλικού φιλμ τρόμου του 1975] Salò, Or The 120 Days Of Sodom”.

Σας αρέσει αυτή η ταινία; Είναι μια ταινία που είναι δύσκολο να την παρακολουθήσεις.

“Είναι μια πολύ δύσκολη ταινία! Στην πραγματικότητα έχω ένα αντίγραφό της επειδή ένα από τα μουσικά μας βίντεο [Babalon A.D. (So Glad For The Madness)] βασίστηκε σε αυτό – χαλαρά, ευτυχώς. Πείτε μας για το επόμενο άλμπουμ των Cradle.

“Ξεκινήσαμε να ηχογραφούμε το νέο άλμπουμ τον Μάιο. Έχουμε μερικά καλοκαιρινά φεστιβάλ, αλλά αυτή η χρονιά, τουλάχιστον μέχρι τα μέσα Σεπτεμβρίου, αφορά το νέο άλμπουμ. Απλά γυαλίζουμε μερικά κομμάτια, αλλά είναι συναρπαστικό! Είναι πολύ μοντέρνο, αλλά και πολύ Dusk… And Her Embrace. Οι οπαδοί μας θα το λατρέψουν!”

Πιστεύετε ότι το νέο σας single, She Is A Fire, είναι μια καλή ένδειξη για το πώς θα ακούγεται το επόμενο άλμπουμ των Cradle;

“Δεν απέχει εκατομμύρια μίλια από αυτό με κανένα τρόπο. Δεν σχεδιάζουμε μια ολική αποχώρηση από το είδος προς το ska ή το gabber [ένα είδος EDM] σύντομα!”

Υπάρχουν άλλες ταινίες τρόμου στις οποίες θα θέλατε να αποτίσετε φόρο τιμής σε ένα κλιπ του Cradle;

“Evil Dead, Hellraiser, The Wicker Man, The Masque Of The Red Death, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Possession, Martyrs, The Witch, Häxan, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Cannibal Holocaust, Dagon… Η λίστα είναι αρκετά εξαντλητική, αν και ήταν ιδέα του σκηνοθέτη [Andrew ‘WIZ’ Whiston] για το βίντεο Babalon A.D. να τιμήσει το Salò. Ήθελε μάλιστα να γεμίσει μπολ σκύλων με τον ίδιο πολτό υλικών για να μιμηθεί τα κακά όπως στην ταινία, αλλά τον πείσαμε ότι αυτό ίσως να ξεπερνούσε λίγο τα όρια”.

Υπήρξε ποτέ μια ταινία που να είναι πολύ τρομακτική για εσάς;

“Υπήρχε μια ταινία πριν από λίγο καιρό που είχε μια σκηνή όπου τα μάτια των ανθρώπων καίγονταν με πυρακτωμένα τσουγκράνα. Νομίζω ότι ήταν ένα ριμέικ του Wrong Turn. Αυτό άγγιξε ένα νεύρο.

“That church burned down before we got there”: Dani Filth on the next Cradle Of Filth album, collaborating with Ed Sheeran and the sexiest member of Slayer.

On St Patrick’s Day, you posted a photo of you and Ed Sheeran in the pub. What’s it like being BFFs with a pop star?

“Weird. I’ve spoken to him very regularly over the last two years. Like me, he’s a real Suffolk boy. When he came to the studio that day [for our collaboration], he didn’t come down with a cavalcade of reporters; he turned up on his own, guitar on his back, Cradle Of Filth hoodie on, and got on with it. It was fucking great.”

Sounds good! Can you update us on the collaboration?

“Ed’s done all his parts. It’s just bass and vocals for me to do. It’s exactly how you can imagine it’ll sound, if you can imagine Ed Sheeran with Cradle Of Filth. He plays acoustic guitar on it, but it’s heavy: it’s got a blastbeat in there. It’s a bit of everything. The plan is to do it as a charity single, because, first off, everybody jumped to the conclusion that we were doing this for the money and we wanted to knock that on the head. We’re hoping for it to be out this summer.”

It’s an odd collab, especially for a band who once got blamed for trying to set fire to a church in Colchester…

“That was a long time ago! That church got burned down a long time before we got there. When we did a photoshoot there, we got harassed by a pitchforkwielding mob. They were there because the church had been targeted [by arsonists] in the past. It was roofless because it had been burned down, allegedly by a witch cult.”

Does your mum still have a crush on Tom Araya?

“She certainly does!”

What’s the appeal?

“I don’t know! I don’t see it myself. I just know she does because I see Instagram accounts like ‘Tom Araya lovers’ and the first name I see is my mum’s. But, speaking of these weird familial juxtapositions, yesterday our guitar tech Anthony’s family came down to a show and brought us a copy of [controversial 1975 Italian horror film] Salò, Or The 120 Days Of Sodom.”

Is that a film you enjoy? It’s a hard one to get through.

“It’s a very hard film! I actually have a copy of it because one of our music videos [Babalon A.D. (So Glad For The Madness)] was based on it – loosely, thankfully. I’ve watched it once and the threat is that we’ll watch it again on a day off, but we’re trying to finish writing our current album while we’re touring, so I think we’ll put Salò on the backburner for now.”

Tell us about the next Cradle album.

“We started recording the new album in May. We’ve got a few summer festivals but this year, at least until mid-September, is about the new album. We’re just polishing off a few bits, but it’s exciting! It’s very modern, but it’s also very Dusk… And Her Embrace. Our fans are gonna love it!”

Do you think your new single, She Is A Fire, is a good indication of how the next Cradle album will sound? 

“It’s not a million miles off by any means. We’re not planning a total genre departure into ska or gabber [a type of EDM] any time soon!”

Are there any other horror films you’re aching to pay tribute to in a Cradle clip? 

“Evil Dead, Hellraiser, The Wicker Man, The Masque Of The Red Death, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Possession, Martyrs, The Witch, Häxan, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Cannibal Holocaust, Dagon… The list is pretty exhaustive, though it was the director’s [Andrew ‘WIZ’ Whiston] idea for the Babalon A.D. video to honour Salò. He even wanted to fill dog bowls with the same mash of ingredients to emulate poo as in the movie, but we convinced him that that might be pushing boundaries a little too far.”

Has there ever been a film that’s too scary for you?

“There was a movie not so long ago which had a scene where people’s eyes were getting burned out with red-hot pokers. I think it was a remake of Wrong Turn. That touched a nerve.

Ο Erna μιλούσε με τον Pat Lynch και τον Taco Bob του 101.1 WJRR όταν πρόσφερε μια ενημέρωση σχετικά με τα τρέχοντα σχέδια του συγκροτήματος για το άλμπουμ του. Είπε ότι οι Godsmack πρώτα και κύρια θα επικεντρωθούν στα επερχόμενα φεστιβάλ και στις ζωντανές διεθνείς συναυλίες. “Το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να κάνουμε είναι αυτές οι συναυλίες”, δήλωσε ο Erna, προσθέτοντας. “Έχουμε άλλα τέσσερα να κάνουμε τα επόμενα δύο Σαββατοκύριακα. Και μετά είναι αρκετά χαλαρά μέχρι τον Οκτώβριο. Μετά ξεκινάμε ‘περιοδεία’ στην Ευρώπη, κάνουμε Νότια Αμερική, [παίζουμε] κάποιες διεθνείς [συναυλίες]”.

Λέει στον Pat και τον Taco Bob ότι ο νέος δίσκος είναι στα σκαριά και θα ακούσουμε κάτι από αυτόν, πιθανότατα, σε λίγους μήνες. Στη συνέχεια, έκανε μια τρομερή δήλωση. “Θα επιστρέψουμε το πρώτο τρίμηνο του ’23 με νέο δίσκο. Ο δίσκος έχει τελειώσει, τελειώσαμε με τις ηχογραφήσεις. Πιθανότατα θα πρέπει να ακούσετε νέα μουσική μέχρι το καλοκαίρι – στα μέσα με τέλη του καλοκαιριού – και στη συνέχεια θα ακολουθήσει ένα δεύτερο single και ο πλήρης δίσκος μέχρι την αρχή του ’23. Αυτό είναι το σχέδιο. Και μετά θα το χτυπήσουμε άλλη μια φορά. Και πρέπει να σας πω ότι αυτό μπορεί να είναι το τελευταίο για εμάς – μπορεί να είναι ο τελευταίος δίσκος μας“.

Στο πλαίσιο της κουβέντας, ο Erna μίλησε επίσης πιο αναλυτικά για μια πρόσφατη περιπέτεια με COVID, προσθέτοντας ότι εξεπλάγη που οι επιπλοκές από τον ιό τον κατέστρωσαν πραγματικά μετά τις διακοπές των Χριστουγέννων.

“Προσέχω πολύ καλά τον εαυτό μου. Είμαι δρομέας. Κάνω πυγμαχία για πάνω από 20 χρόνια. Και βρίσκομαι στη σκηνή δύο ώρες το βράδυ. Έχω αρκετά μεγάλους πνεύμονες, οπότε ακόμα και αν σκεφτόμουν ότι θα τον κολλήσω, σκέφτηκα ότι θα αρρωστήσω όπως αρρωσταίνει η φυσιολογική γρίπη και μετά το ξεπερνάς, αλλά σίγουρα δεν περίμενα να με ρίξει τόσο πολύ”, εξήγησε ο τραγουδιστής. “Αρρώστησα πολύ. Ήμουν άρρωστος για πεντέμισι εβδομάδες, αλλά ήμουν στο νοσοκομείο για τέσσερις ημέρες”.

Λέει ότι επειδή αρρώστησε κατά τη διάρκεια των διακοπών, οι γιατροί του ήταν σε διακοπές και είχε αντικαταστάτες που τον καθοδηγούσαν μέσω τηλεφώνου. “Αυτό που συνέβη ήταν ότι ο COVID έφυγε από τον οργανισμό μου μέσα σε επτά με δέκα ημέρες, αλλά στη συνέχεια αναπτύχθηκε πνευμονία και αυτό ήταν που με έκανε (πραγματικά άρρωστο)”, εξηγεί ο Erna. “Κατέληξα να έχω θρόμβους αίματος στους πνεύμονές μου και άλλα τέτοια πράγματα. Τότε ήταν που όλα κατέρρευσαν. Ήταν πολύ άσχημα για λίγο, επειδή το οξυγόνο μου είχε πέσει στο 76. Και αν κάποιος ξέρει κάτι για τα επίπεδα οξυγόνου, υποτίθεται ότι δεν πρέπει να πέφτεις κάτω από 95… Ήμουν αρκετά συναισθηματικά φορτισμένος, αρκετά νευρικός και αναρωτιόμουν αν θα τα κατάφερνα. (Ο γιατρός μου στο νοσοκομείο λέει): “Πρέπει να σου πω, φίλε, όταν ήρθες, είχα πραγματικά άγχος για σένα. Και οι περισσότεροι άνθρωποι που έρχονται σε αυτή την κατάσταση, δεν φεύγουν με αίσιο τέλος”.

Κατά τη διάρκεια μιας άλλης ραδιοφωνικής συνέντευξης το 2021, ο Erna δήλωσε ότι ο κορονοϊός δεν ήταν “παγκόσμιος δολοφόνος”. Σύμφωνα με το Blabbermouth, “Κάνει ζημιά και σίγουρα επηρεάζει τους ηλικιωμένους, και προσευχόμαστε γι’ αυτούς, και είμαστε πραγματικά συμπονετικοί απέναντι σ’ αυτό, και γι’ αυτό φοράμε όλοι μάσκες, γι’ αυτό κάνουμε όλοι τη δουλειά μας. Επειδή υπάρχουν πολλοί από εμάς που δεν φοβούνται το COVID, και ξέρουμε ότι πιθανότατα θα το ανατινάξουμε. Αλλά δεν θέλουμε να ρισκάρουμε με τους αγαπημένους μας, γι’ αυτό είμαστε υπεύθυνοι. Αλλά την ίδια στιγμή, η πραγματικότητα είναι ότι δεν πρόκειται για έναν παγκόσμιο δολοφόνο. Θα περάσει, θα το ξεπεράσουμε και πρέπει να επιστρέψουμε στην κανονικότητα”.

Godsmack frontman Sully Erna recently spoke with an Orlando rock station after playing a radio festival about his recent hospitalization from COVID-19 and during the chat he revealed the bombshell that the band may be done making new music.

Erna was talking with Pat Lynch and Taco Bob of 101.1 WJRR (as seen above) when he offered an update on the band’s current album plans. He said that Godsmack first and foremost was going to concentrate on upcoming radio festivals and live international gigs. “The first thing to do is these shows,” stated Erna, adding. “We have four more to do over the next two weekends. And then it’s pretty loose until October. Then we start ‘touring touring’ in Europe, we do South America, we [play] some international [shows].”

He tells Pat and Taco Bob that the new record is in the can and we’ll hear some of it, most likely, in a few months. Then, he offered a dire statement. “We’ll be back first quarter of ’23 with a new record. The record’s finished; we’re done recording it. You should probably be hearing new music by summertime — mid-to-late summer — and then following it up with a second single and the full record by the top of ’23. That’s the plan. And then we’re just gonna hit it one more time hard and heavy. And I’ve gotta tell you, this might be the last one for us — it might be the last record for us.”

Within the chat, Erna also spoke more in depth about a recent bout with COVID, adding that he was surprised that complications from the virus really laid him out after the Christmas holiday.

“I take really good care of myself. I’m a runner. I’ve boxed for over 20 years. And I’m onstage two hours a night. I have pretty big lungs, so even thinking if I was gonna get it, I figured I’d get sick like the normal flu get sick and then you push through it, but I definitely didn’t expect for it to knock me down the way it did,” explained the singer. “I got very sick. I was sick for five-and-a-half weeks, but I was in the hospital for four days.”

He says that because he got hit over the holiday, his doctors were on vacation and he had substitutes docs guiding him over the phone. “What happened was the COVID left my body within seven to 10 days, but then pneumonia developed, and that’s what got me (really sick),” explained Erna. “I ended up getting blood clots in my lungs and stuff like that. That’s when everything went down. It was pretty gnarly for a while because my oxygen had dipped to 76. And if anyone knows anything about oxygen levels, you’re not supposed to go below 95… I was pretty emotional, pretty nervous about wondering if I was coming out of this. (My doctor in the hospital goes),  ‘I’ve gotta tell you, man, when you came in, I was really nervous for you. And most people that come in in that condition, they don’t leave with a happy ending.'”

During another radio interview in 2021, Erna said that the coronavirus wasn’t a “global killer.” Per Blabbermouth, “It’s doing damage, and it’s certainly affecting the elderly, and we pray for them, and we are really sympathetic towards that, and that’s why we’re all wearing masks, that’s why we’re all doing our job. Because there’s a lot of us that aren’t afraid of COVID, and we know that we’re probably gonna blow right through it. But we don’t wanna roll the dice with our loved ones, so we’re being responsible. But at the same time, the reality is this isn’t a global killer. It’s gonna pass, we’re gonna get past it, and we need to get back to normal.”

P.G.: Hello, ευχαριστώ για τη φιλοξενία. Σχετικά με την ιστορία μας: Ξεκίνησα τους GROZA το 2016 σαν ένα solo project. Ξεκίνησε σαν ένα σχήμα λατρείας στους MGLA, βασικά. Πάντα αγαπούσα το black metal με βάθος και συναίσθημα και εντυπωσιάστηκα πάρα πολύ από τη μουσική των MGLA αλλά και τις ζωντανές τους εμφανίσεις. Τόσο πολύ που μου γεννήθηκε η σπίθα να ξεκινήσω επιτέλους ένα project στην ίδια κατεύθυνση. Τότε ξεκίνησα να γράφω riffs και τραγούδια για περισσότερο από 2 χρόνια ώσπου αποφάσισα να μαζέψω μέλη για να γίνουν οι GROZA ολοκληρωμένη μπάντα. Τα υπόλοιπα μέλη μπήκαν στο συγκρότημα στις αρχές του 2018. Τότε ηχογραφήσαμε το debut album “UNIFIED IN VOID” εντελώς μόνοι μας και το κυκλοφορήσαμε ανεξάρτητα στο YouTube το Σεπτέμβρη της ίδιας χρονιάς. Τότε υπογράψαμε στην AOP Records και σύντομα αρχίσαμε να περιοδεύουμε σε όλη την Ευρώπη. Μέσα στα επόμενα χρόνια γράψαμε το τωρινό μας άλμπουμ “THE REDEMPTIVE END”. Τα υπόλοιπα μέλη συμμετείχαν δημιουργικά αυτή τη φορά, πράγμα που κάνει το άλμπουμ πιο διαφορετικό όσον αφορά τις μουσικές επιρροές.
Η μουσική σας φαίνεται έντονα επηρεασμένη από συγκροτήματα όπως οι MGLA, UADA κλπ. Είναι αυτές επιρροές της μπάντας; Ποια είναι η δημιουργική σας διαδικασία;

P.G.: Όπως ανέφερα και παραπάνω, αυτή η μπάντα ουσιαστικά ξεκίνησε ως μπάντα λατρείας στους MGLA. Ήταν και παραμένουν η αγαπημένη μου μπάντα και για αυτό θα είναι πάντα η βασική επιρροή στη μουσική που γράφω. Αλλά φυσικά έχουμε διάφορες επιρροές από classic 90s black metal μέχρι grunge και punk , classic rock αλλά ακόμη και κλασσική μουσική και soundtrack. Η έμπνευση μπορεί να προέλθει και από άλλες μορφές τέχνης, όπως βιβλία και πίνακες ζωγραφικής κλπ. Όλα έχουν την δυνατότητα να γεννήσουν μια ιδέα, που μετά γίνεται η αφορμή για να μας εμπνεύσει ένα τραγούδι.  

Η δημιουργική διαδικασία ξεκινά κυρίως με μια μελωδία ή ένα riff. Συγκεντρώνουμε ιδέες και αργότερα εγώ τις ξανακοιτάω, ποιες μπορούν να ταιριάξουν μεταξύ τους και να δούμε, ποιά μορφή τραγουδιού ταιριάζει καλύτερα.  Αυτά τα πρόχειρα σκαριφήματα, μετατρέπονται σε demos, που μετά λειτουργούν συλλογικά, ώστε κάθε μέλος να μπορεί να προσθέσει τα δικά του ξεχωριστά μέρη. Τότε αρχίζω να φτιάχνω και τους στίχους. Συγκεντρώνω διάφορες ιδέες και εικόνες αλλά στην πραγματικότητα αρχίζει να σχηματοποιείται όταν έχω μια πρώιμη εικόνα της μουσικής για να δω ποιοι στίχοι ταιριάζουν στη μουσική και το συναίσθημα του τραγουδιού. Από εκεί και μετά κάνουμε μικροαλλαγές ώστε να φτάσει στην ολότητα των δυνατοτήτων του.  

Το “The Redemptive End είναι ένα album που ήρθε για να φέρει μια φρέσκια δημιουργική πνοή στο είδος και να σπρώξει τα όρια πέρα από κάθε αμφιβολία.” Γράψαμε στην δισκοκριτική μας. Μπορείτε να μας πείτε πως προσεγγίσατε την δημιουργία του άλμπουμ, τι standards βάλατε και ποια η έμπνευση.

P.G.: Δεν είχαμε κάποια συνειδητή προσέγγιση όσον αφορά τη δημιουργία του άλμπουμ. Κάποια τραγούδια, ήταν σε διαφορετικά δημιουργικά στάδια το καθένα πριν καν κυκλοφορήσει το UNIFIED IN VOID. Κάναμε απλά αυτό που μας έβγαινε φυσικά την συγκεκριμένη στιγμή. Απλά περάσαμε τη διαδικασία που περιέγραψα στην προηγούμενη ερώτηση και αφήσαμε τα τραγούδια να μας οδηγήσουν.  Δεν βάλαμε τεχνητά όρια, απλά το αφήσαμε να συμβεί. Εαν το τραγούδι το ζητούσε οτιδήποτε ήταν δυνατό ας πούμε.  

Αναφορικά με τα standards, γράφω πάντα μόνο πράγματα που είναι κοντά σε εμένα μουσικά. Δημιουργώ μουσική  προκειμένου να επεξεργαστώ συναισθήματα, για να τα εξωτερικεύσω απ’ το κεφάλι μου και την καρδιά μου, κάτι σαν κάθαρση.  Αν έγραφα κάτι με μισή καρδιά που δεν θα το ένιωθα απολύτως απαραίτητο να το επικοινωνήσω σε άλλους ανθρώπους, δεν θα το έκανα καν.

Και με τους στίχους; Τι θέματα αγγίζεις και τι σε εμπνέει;

P.G.: Και πάλι, είναι πάντα σχετικά με προσωπικές καταστάσεις και συναισθήματα. Τα θέματα ποικίλουν από την κατάθλιψη, το νιχιλισμό, την απελπισία, τη μισανθρωπιά και τη φύση. Η έμπνευση μπορεί να έρθει από πολλά διαφορετικά πράγματα. Για τους στίχους εμπνέομαι κυρίως όταν απομονώνομαι, είμαι μόνος με τις σκέψεις μου. Επίσης κάποιες εξωτερικές αναφορές είναι τα έργα του Nietzsche, εξπρεσιονιστικά ποιήματα και πίνακες ζωγραφικής αλλά και Ελληνική μυθολογία που μου αρέσει να χρησιμοποιώ μεταφορικά και σχηματικά.

Τι feedback έχετε μέχρι τώρα από το άλμπουμ;

P.G.: Το feedback είναι πολύ καλό μέχρι σήμερα, φαίνεται να αρέσει στον κόσμο το άλμπουμ. Πολλές καλές κριτικές από τα ΜΜΕ αλλά και τους fans που φαίνεται να απολαμβάνουν το δίσκο. Φαίνεται μάλιστα να καταφέραμε να προσελκύσουμε την προσοχή αρκετών νέων ακροατών που δεν μας ήξεραν πιο πριν οπότε δεν μπορούμε να παραπονεθούν.

Ποιά είναι τα σχέδια σας μετά τον covid19? Σκέφτεστε κάποιες αλλαγές λόγω των νέων συνθηκών; Live sessions, streaming events κλπ.

P.G.: Ναι, έχουμε κάνει και μια streaming συναυλία ήδη. Σε συνθήκες σαν αυτές, που είναι πέρα από τον έλεγχο μας, πρέπει να προσαρμοστούμε και να βρούμε νέους τρόπους, να συνεχίσουμε να κάνουμε αυτό που κάνουμε. Το να σταματήσουμε δεν είναι εναλλακτική, οπότε αφοσιωθήκαμε  περισσότερο στο να φτιάχνουμε videos αντί για συναυλίες. Ας ελπίσουμε οτι θα μπορέσουμε να επιστρέψουμε στις ζωντανές εμφανίσεις ως κύριο μέσο προώθησης μιας κυκλοφορίας στο κοντινό μέλλον, μιας και τα live είναι η πιο ολοκληρωμένη πλευρά αυτής της μπάντας για εμένα προσωπικά.

Οι συναυλίες επιστρέφουν σιγά σιγά, έχετε κανονίσει κάτι; Πως ανταποκρίθηκε το κοινό στα νέα τραγούδια; Φανηκε να ξεχωρίζει κάποιο τραγούδι;

P.G.: Δεν έχουμε ανακοινώσει τίποτα ακόμη αλλά προγραμματίζουμε πολλά στο παρασκήνιο. Πάντα προγραμματίζουμε. Απλά πρέπει να περιμένουμε λίγο ακόμη για να δούμε πως θα εξελιχθούν τα πράγματα αλλά σίγουρα θα περιοδεύσουμε με αυτό το άλμπουμ, αργά ή γρήγορα. Έχουμε παίξει σε κάποιες συναυλίες, κυρίως σε ανοιχτά φεστιβάλ στη Γερμανία, αλλά και τα club shows επιστρέφουν και έχουμε κάποια προγραμματισμένα για το υπόλοιπο της χρονιάς. Η ανταπόκριση στο νέο υλικό είναι απίστευτη. Η ενέργεια μοιάζει να μετουσιώνεται σε μια live κατάσταση και ο κόσμος συμμετέχει, πράγμα που κάνει τις συναυλίες πολύ πιο έντονες για εμάς. Ειδικά στο τραγούδι που κλείνουμε το “Homewards”.

Έχοντας γράψει τέτοιο άλμπουμ έχετε ανεβάσει τον πήχη αρκετά ψηλά. Κάνετε σκέψεις για το επόμενο; Δουλεύετε νέο υλικό;

P.G.: Ο επόμενος στόχος μας είναι να κάνουμε όσες περισσότερες ζωντανές εμφανίσεις γίνεται για να γιορτάσουμε τα νέα μας τραγούδια σε όλη την Ευρώπη και πέρα από αυτή. Αυτός είναι ο βασικός μας στόχος αυτή τη στιγμή. Αλλά βέβαια και ήδη δουλεύουμε πάνω σε νέο υλικό . Δεν έχουμε ακόμη σχέδια απλά θα δούμε που θα μας οδηγήσει.

Having already listened to the second Groza album The Redemptive End out on AOP Records just a little while ago we felt obligated to have a few words with the band if not to interview them at least to congratulate them on an exquisite release.

First of all, I’d like to welcome you on Metalradio.gr and for doing this interview. Being a rather fresh band in the metal world we would like to begin in your beginning, so we would like you to give us in a few words your story so far.

P.G.: Hello, thanks for having me. Regarding our story: I founded GROZA back in 2016 as a solo project. It all started out as a MGLA worship project, basically. I’ve always loved black metal with depth and emotion and was so impressed and overcome with MGLAs music and live shows, that it generated this final spark for me to finally start a project in that same direction. I then started writing riffs and songs over a period of about two years before I decided to gather some members in order to make GROZA a full band. The other guys then joined early 2018. We then recorded our debut album “UNIFIED IN VOID” all by ourselves and released it independently through YouTube in September of the same year. We then signed with AOP Records not long after that and started playing a lot of shows to support the album all over Europe. Over the next years, we then wrote and recorded our current new album “THE REDEMPTIVE END”. The other members also contributed more, this time, which makes the album a bit more diverse in the sense of musical influences and such.

Your music sounds highly influenced by bands such as MGLA, UADA etc. Are these bands your influences and what is your creative process in writing music?

P.G.: As I said before, this band basically started out as a MGLA worship project. They were and remain my favorite band of all time and therefore will always influence me in my writing in some way or another. But of course, we have various other influences, ranging from classic 90s black metal to grunge and punk over classic rock and even classical music or movie scores. Inspiration can also come from other forms of art such as books or paintings etc. They all have the potential to spark an idea, that then inspires us to develop a song from.
The creative process mostly starts with a melody or a riff. We gather ideas and then later on, I go through them and see, which fit together in the context of a song. I then make a rough arrangement to see, what song structure works etc. Those rough sketches are then turned into demos, which we then work on collectively, so every member can put their individual touch on their parts. It is also then that I start putting lyrics together. I gather certain ideas and pictures, but it really only comes together, when I have a rough version of the music, to see, what lyric fits the music and emotion of that certain song. We then just continue to fine tune the tracks until we think, that they have reached their full potential.

“The Redemptive End is an album that came to blow a fresh creative breath over the genre and push the boundaries further leaving absolutely no space for doubt.” We wrote on our album review. Tell us how you approached the creation of this album, what standards did you set and what was your inspiration?

P.G.: There was no conscious approach towards writing this album. Some songs every were in writing stage before UNIFIED IN VOID was even released. We just did, what came natural at the given time. We just went through the process, that I described in the previous question and let the songs guide us along the way. We didn’t set artificial boundaries in terms of where to go with the songs, we just let it happen. If the song called for it, anything was possible so to speak.

As about standards, I always only write stuff, that is close to me emotionally. I make music in order to process these emotions and get them out of my head, sort of like a catharsis, if you will. If we were writing something halfhearted, that didn’t absolutely feel necessary for me to get out for people to hear, we wouldn’t be doing it.

What about the lyrics, what topics do you approach and what inspires you for them?

P.G.: Again, it’s always tied to personal situations and emotion. Topics range from depression, nihilism, hopelessness to misanthropy and nature. Inspiration can again come from different things. For lyrics, I mostly get inspired by being away from people and being in my head with myself most of the time. Also, some external references would be Nietzsche’s work, expressionistic poems and paintings as well as some ancient Greek mythology, that I like to use as images and metaphors.

What feedback have you got for the album so far, both from the press and the fans?

P.G.: The feedback has been very good so far; people seem to like it. We got a lot of good feedback through reviews from the press, but also, our fans seem to enjoy the record. Looks like we also managed to grab the attention of a lot of new people, who weren’t aware of us before, so we can’t complain.

What Are your plans after covid19? Are you thinking of any changes due to the new rules applied in the music industry? About live sessions, streaming events possibly, new albums etc.

P.G.: Yes, we have done a streaming gig, even. In situations like this where you have no control over the circumstances, you have to adapt and find new ways to continue doing what you do. Stopping is no option, so we focused a lot more on producing videos etc. instead of playing live shows for that regard. Hopefully, we can return to playing shows as a main support for the record in the near future, since playing live is the most fulfilling aspect of this band for me, personally.

Live shows are coming back slowly, do you have any tour dates planned? Have you had any live shows yet? How did the crowd respond to the new songs? Any crowd favorites?

P.G.: We haven’t announced anything yet, but of course we are planning behind the scenes. We always are. We just need to wait a little longer and see, how things evolve, but for sure, we will be touring with this album sooner or later. And yeah, we have already played shows again. Mostly open air shows in Germany, but also club shows are coming back again, which we also have a few of scheduled for the rest of the year. The response to the new material has been amazing, the energy seems to translate really well in a live situation and people are joining in, which makes the shows even more intense for us. Especially, the closing track “Homewards” seems to connect to people.

Having written such an album sets the bar quite high for your next step. Do you have any thoughts on what comes next yet? Are you already working on new material?

P.G.: Next up, we focus on playing live and celebrating the new songs as much as we can at rituals all over Europe and hopefully beyond. That is our main focus right now. But of course, we are already working on new material, as well. No plans for that though, we just see, where it takes us.
