Πολλές οι φωνές, πολλές οι γνώμες, ακόμα παραπάνω οι τρομερές δηλώσεις μεγαλείου και δεύτερων κορυφών από την εποχή του Painkiller μέχρι σήμερα. Αδιαπραγμάτευτα, το Invincible Shield είναι ένα πολύ υψηλού επιπέδου album, τόσο ποιοτικά όσο και πιθανόν ιστορικά. Αλλά ας κάνουμε ένα βήμα πίσω, και μετά από αρκετές ακροάσεις και έχοντας αφήσει πίσω μας τον αρχικό ενθουσιασμό της πρώτης επαφής, ας του δώσουμε την θέση που πραγματικά του αξίζει. Ναι είναι μεγαθύριο, είχε την ατυχία να ακολουθήσει το εξωπραγματικό Firepower και αυτό από μόνο του, του στερεί λίγο από την αίγλη του. Νομίζω πως ο πιο σωστός τρόπος να το περιγράψω είναι πως αποτελεί την φυσική εξέλιξη και συνέχεια του αγαπημένου μου Redeemer Of Souls, με μερικές μικρές διαφορές. Αρχικά, ενώ έχει και αυτό έναν αέρα από σχεδόν όλη την πορεία της μπάντας από τα 80s’ και μετά, το Devil In Disguise μας κλείνει το μάτι, με μεγαλύτερη έμφαση στην μετά 86 περίοδο, δεν χαίρει της ίδιας ηχητικής ποικιλομορφίας με το Redeemer Of Souls. Ισορροπεί όμως αυτό το κενό με μια αρκετά προς το Painkiller δομή και γενικότερη λογική, δομικά πάντα. 

Πολύ δυνατές συνθέσεις όλες τους, up tempo album από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Από το πρώτο κομμάτι σε βουτάει από σβέρκο που λένε και σου δίνει πλήρη διαπιστευτήρια στο γιατί οι JUDAS PRIEST ήταν και παραμένουν κορυφή σε αυτό που κάνουν. Συνθετικά, νομίζω πως αυτή η κυκλοφορία αποτελεί το magnum opus της καριέρας του Faulkner, που ξεκάθαρα έχει πάρει τα πάντα στους ώμους του και τους πηγαίνει ακόμα παραπέρα. Όλα είναι γνώριμα και παλιά και ταυτόχρονα καινούργια, κάτι που γίνεται με τόσο ομογενοποιημένο τρόπο πλέον στην τρίτη του δισκογραφική δουλειά με το συγκρότημα, που απλά το αισθάνεσαι εντελώς φυσικό. Δεν μπορώ να μπω στην διαδικασία να εξετάσω και αν μιλήσω για τα κομμάτια και τα riff γιατί θα χρειαστώ μία σελίδα για κάθε ένα από τα 14 κομμάτια της deluxe edition. Ναι πραγματικά, ο δίσκος χρήζει ακροάσεων γιατί περιέχει πράγματα και μελωδίες που με κάθε άκουσμα μεγαλώνουν μέσα σου, και κάθε φορά αντιλαμβάνεσαι και κάτι καινούργιο. Είναι τόσο καλά τα κομμάτια, απλά δεν είναι πάντα αυτό που λέμε “άμεσα”, στα “σκάνε” ύπουλα και με μικρή καθυστέρηση. Ο δε Halford είναι τουλάχιστον συγκινητικός, και η δύναμη και το εκτόπισμα που κρύβουν οι μεσαίες του περιοχές συχνοτικά είναι απολαυστικές και ίσως πιο εθιστικές θα τολμήσω να πω από τις ψηλές του, ακόμα και των χρόνων της ακμής του. Και οι γραμμές, στις γέφυρες, ρε φίλε…

Πέρα από τα single που όλοι μας ακούσαμε λίγο πολύ, το ομοτιτλο Invincible Shield, Gates Of Hell, As God Is My Witness (Leather Rebel 2.0), Escape From Reality (σοβαρά τώρα;), Sons Of Thunder και το κομμάτι που με “ψάρωσε” άπειρα The Lodger (ολίγον από Nostradamus vibes εδώ ή είναι απλά ιδέα μου;)αποτελούν περίλαμπρες συνθέσεις άξιες τόσο του ονόματος του συγκροτήματος όσο και μιας πορείας 50 χρόνων. Είναι τελικά το Invincible Shield το καλύτερο JUDAS PRIEST album από το 90 μέχρι σήμερα; Όχι, ούτε καλύτερο του Firepower κατά την γνώμη μου, του λείπει αυτό το εκτώπισμα, αλλά αποτελεί κατεμέ ισάξιο στολίδι με το Redeemer Of Souls και από τις καλύτερες δουλειές από το reunion και έπειτα, αφήνοντας πολύ πίσω του το Angel Of Retribution. Το σημαντικότερο; Αν αυτό αποτελέσει και το κύκνειο άσμα τους, περίτρανο και αξιοζήλευτο κλείσιμο καριέρας που μόνο με τους SAXON μπορώ να συγκρίνω. Και μιας που το ανέφερα, ναι είναι καλύτερο από το τελευταίο SAXON. Να τους αγαπάτε τους παππούδες του heavy metal, μέχρι τα βαθιά τους γεράματα ακόμα μας μαθαίνουν πράγματα και μας δείχνουν τον δρόμο. Πάλι τα ζουμιά θα με πάρουν ρε διάολε το καλοκαίρι…

This review fell into my hands, as I think I’m the most if not the only Priest-head of the bunch, and if only you knew how much I was looking forward to this album. I don’t have all the pages in the world to write about their career and their huge legacy in heavy metal and something tells me that it’s not going to be too long until I  write something like that, but for now let’s focus on their latest (probably their last) album, Invincible Shield.

There are many voices, many opinions, even more big statements of greatness and second peaks from the Painkiller era until today. Undeniably, Invincible Shield is a very high level album, both qualitatively and possibly historically. But let’s take a step back, and after several listens and having put the initial excitement of the first listening session behind us, let’s give it the place it truly deserves. Yes he is a mega-house, he had the misfortune to follow the unreal Firepower and that in itself takes away some of his glamour. I think the most accurate way to describe it is that it is the natural progression and continuation of my favourite Redeemer Of Souls, with a few minor differences. First of all, while it too has an air of almost the entire band’s career from the 80s onwards, Devil In Disguise gives us a wink, with more emphasis on the post 86 period, it doesn’t enjoy the same sonic diversity as Redeemer Of Souls. But it balances this gap with a fairly Painkiller-like structure and general logic, structurally. 

Very strong compositions, all of them, an up tempo album from the beginning to the end. From the first track it grabs you by the neck, as they say ,and gives you full credentials on why JUDAS PRIEST were and remain top at what they do. Compositionally, I think this release is the magnum opus of Faulkner’s career, he has clearly taken everything on his shoulders and is taking them even further. Everything is familiar and old and new at the same time, which is done in such a homogenized way now on his third record with the band that it just feels completely natural. I can’t go into the process of examining and talking about the tracks and riffs because I would need a page for each of the 14 tracks of the deluxe edition. Yes really, the album deserves some listening because it contains things and melodies that grow inside you with every new listen, and every time you realize something new. The tracks are that good, they just aren’t always what we call “instant”, they sneak up on you sneakily and with a short of delay. And Halford is moving to say the least, and the power and expansiveness of his mid-range frequencies is enjoyable and perhaps more addictive I dare say than his highs, even of his prime days. And the lines, on the bridges, oh man…

Apart from the singles that we all listened to more or less, the self-titled Invincible Shield, Gates Of Hell, As God Is My Witness (Leather Rebel 2.0), Escape From Reality (seriously?)Sons Of Thunder and the track that left me for fool The Lodger (some Nostradamus vibes here or is it just me?) are brilliant compositions worthy of both the band’s name and a 50 years long career. Is finally Invincible Shield the best JUDAS PRIEST album from the 90’s until today? No, not even better than Firepower in my opinion, it lacks that mass and greatness, but it is a gem equal to Redeemer Of Souls and one of the best works since the reunion, leaving Angel Of Retribution far behind. The most important thing? If this is their swan song, then it is an outstanding and enviable career finale that I can only compare to SAXON. Speaking of which, yes it is better than the last SAXON album. We have to love the grandfathers of heavy metal, until their old age they still teach us things and show us the way. I’m going to get rainy day eyes yet again damn it, in the summer festivals…
