Το Newcastle Upon Tyne ήταν η έβδομη στάση των Paradise Lost, σε αυτό το μικρό αλλά πολύ-αναμενόμενο Obsidian Moon UK Tour, και η μόλις δεύτερη στάση των Moonspell, μιας και οι Alunah ήταν αυτοί που συνόδευσαν τους Paradise Lost στα πρώτα πέντε live τους. Φυσικά και είμαστε στη Βόρειοανατολική Αγγλία, που σημαίνει αναποφάσιστος ουρανός, μέρα κρύα με πολύ αέρα, και σ΄ένα από τα παλιότερα venues του Newcastle ακριβώς δίπλα στον ποταμό Tyne ο κόσμος αρχίζει σιγά σιγά να μαζεύεται μέχρι που οι πόρτες του Riverside ανοίγουν ώστε να ζεσταθούμε – επιτέλους – παρέα με τους φλογερούς λύκους της Πορτογαλίας, τους μοναδικούς Moonspell, οι οποίοι θα ανοίξουν τη συναυλία.

Από το Wolfheart του 1995 μέχρι και το Hermitage του 2021, οι Moonspell είναι μία μπάντα που παραμένει πιστή σε αυτό που αγαπάει να δημιουργεί: από ψυχής συναισθηματικό metal που μας συνοδεύει ακόμα και στους πιο σκοτεινούς καιρούς. Πλησιάζοντας την 30η επέτειό τους ως συγκρότημα οι Moonspell είναι πιο δυνατοί από ποτέ με το Hermitage, το 13ο κατά σειρά studio album τους, να είναι ένα ευαίσθητο, εκλεπτυσμένο αλλά κι ένα επαναστατικό, σκοτεινό ταξίδι μέσα στην ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη.

Τα φώτα αρχίσουν να γεμίζουν τον χώρο, η βελούδινη φωνή του Fernando Ribeiro αρχίσει να απαγγέλει μέχρι που ο Hugo Rebeiro επιτίθεται στο drum kit του δημιουργώντας τη δυνατή ρυθμική βάση του αριστουργηματικού The Greater Good και ο χώρος γεμίζει με αυτή τη μοναδική εκρηκτική ενέργεια που εκπέμπουν οι Moonspell.  Ακολουθεί ο goth ύμνος Common Prayers και μία αιθέρια μελωδικότητα, τολμώ να πω πως θα μας γαληνεύσει…για λίγο!

Γιατί οι Moonspell ξέρουν πολύ καλά να κρατάνε τις ισορροπίες κι έτσι σειρά παίρνει ένα από τα κορυφαία κομμάτια τους, το οποίο ξεσήκωσε όλους εμάς τους πιστούς οπαδούς τους, αλλά και όχι μόνο…Opium, desire or will με το πόδι καρφωμένο στο ηχείο μας τραγουδάει ο Fernando Ribeiro, o οποίος εναλλάσσει φωνητικά τενόρου με θανατηφόρα growls με χαρακτηριστική άνεση και μας ανεβάζει τους παλμούς επικίνδυνα.

Είχα αποφασίσει να μείνω μακριά από οποιαδήποτε setlist που μπορεί να είχε δημοσιευθεί στα social media λόγω του απρόσμενου ενθουσιασμού που με κατακλύζει όταν ακούω κομμάτια που δεν περιμένω, όπως τα υπέροχα Breathe και Extinct! Το μπάσο τουAires Pereira και τα drums του Hugo Rebeiro χορεύουν σε σαγηνευτικούς ρυθμούς, με τις αιθέριες αλλά και παχιές κιθάρες του Ricardo Amorim και τα συμφωνικά πλήκτρα του Pedro Paixão να δημιουργούν την απόλυτη ατμόσφαιρα μέσα στην οποία τα φωνητικά και οι απαγγελίες του Fernando θυμίζουν λύκο που στάζει γλυκό αίμα.

Hermits Saints, Apophthegmata  και Hermitage ήταν τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια που οι Moonspell μας παρουσίασαν απ΄τη τελευταία τους δουλειά και φυσικά φρόντισαν  για ακόμα μία φορά να μας ταξιδέψουν πίσω στη δεκαετία του ‘90 με τα πολύ αγαπημένα Alma Mater αλλά και με τον επίλογο της εμφάνισής τους: Full Moon Madness, κατά τη διάρκεια του οποίου ο Fernando αρπάζει ένα σετ drumsticks και τα χτυπάει με μαθηματική ακρίβεια απέναντι από τον καθισμένο Hugo ξεσηκώνοντας το Riverside για τα καλά.

Δεν νομίζω πως θα μπορούσε να υπάρχει καλύτερη μπάντα να ανοίξει το Obsidian Moon Tour των Paradises Lost. Οι Moonspell μας ζωγράφισαν ένα υπέροχο μουσικό τοπίο μέσα στο οποίο μας ενσωμάτωσαν μέσω της μαγευτικής τους ενέργειας προσφέροντάς μας μία πανέμορφη οπτικοακουστική εμπειρία και αφήνοντάς μας να ανυπομονούμε να τους ξαναδούμε ζωντανά. Moonspell, we are definitely under your spell!

Και αφού το φλογερό ταπεραμέντο της Πορτογαλίας μας ζέστανε για τα καλά, σειρά παίρνει το Halifax της Αγγλίας, με τους masters του death doom metal headliners, Paradise Lost.  Έχοντας υπάρξει ως μπάντα από το 1988, οι Paradise Lost αυτή τη στιγμή περιοδεύουν το Obsidian, το 16ο και  πιο πρόσφατο άλμπουμ τους, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε το 2020.

Προς τεράστια έκπληξή μου (ευχάριστη πάντα) οι Paradise Lost άνοιξαν το live τους με ένα υπερ-αγαπημένο μου κομμάτι, από το τεράστιο Icon. Συντριπτικά drums από τον Waltteri Väyrynen, ένα φλογερό σόλο από τον Gregor Mackintosh και  η πολύ γνώριμη φωνή του Nick Holmes μας μεταφέρει πίσω στο χρόνο και η καρδιά μας φτερουγίζει υπό τους ήχους του Widow.

Οι καπνοί πυκνώνουν και το Fall From Grace  μπαίνει αργό, βασανιστικό και άκρως απολαυστικό, με το Blood And Chaos να ακολουθεί σε παρόμοια σκηνική ατμόσφαιρα, με φωνητικά και κιθαριστικά riffs να χορεύουν ξέφρενα.  Το Faith Divides Us- Death Unites Us θα ακολουθήσει και οι Paradise Lost θα ξεσηκώσουν το Riverside με αυτή την τόσο δυναμική και μελωδική νωχελικότητά τους.

Για το επόμενο κλείσαμε τα μάτια και αφεθήκαμε στην Eternal μουσική ικανοποίηση που μόνο οι Paradise Lost ξέρουν να προσφέρουν από το 1991 και το Gothic, ένα άλμπουμ ορόσημο, τόσο για την μπάντα όσο και για το είδος. One Second μας λέει ο Nick από το ομώνυμο του 1997 και με ένα μόνο άλμα θα μεταφερθούμε στο 2020 και το Serenity, ένα κομμάτι του Obsidian στο οποίο ομολογώ πως δεν είχα δώσει πολύ προσοχή. Σταθερά drums, απειλητικό και χαμηλό μπάσο, παχιά riffs και πολύς καπνός!

Η πολύ χαρακτηριστική και μελαγχολική εισαγωγή του επόμενου κομματιού  ήταν η πρώτη απόπειρα για mosh pit από κάποιους, κάτι που θα αφήσω ασχολίαστο. As I Die και οι Paradise Lost  σε πλήρη μουσική νιρβάνα έχουν ξυπνήσει όλες τις αισθήσεις μας, με τους μπλε περιστερφόμενους φωτισμούς να κάνουν αυτή την ατμόσφαιρα ακόμα πιο μαγική. To Last Time ήταν σίγουρα μία πιο επιτυχημένη προσπάθεια από κάποιους για mosh pit και το μόνο κομμάτι που ακούστηκε από το αγαπημένο σε πολλούς από εμάς Draconian Times.

Το Just Say Words ήταν το κομμάτι με το οποίο μας είπαν την πρώτη καληνύχτα οι Paradise Lost με τον Waltteri Väyrynen να μας παρακινεί και καθοδηγεί στα παλαμάκια, ενώ σίγουρα δεν μπορούσαμε να σταματήσουμε να χοροπηδάμε μέχρι το αναγκαστικό και ξαφνικό κλείσιμο. Μετά από ένα σύντομο διάλλειμα οι Paradise Lost ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή για ένα συντριπτικό encore, με τον Nick Holmes να ανεβαίνει πρώτος, ψιθυρίζοντας, drifting through loss, we escape from the cost of the pain, the healing through years so obscured by the tears and the strain..και μέχρι όλη η μπάντα να μαζευτεί στη σκηνή και να μας δώσει τον καλύτερό της εαυτό, με ένα Darker Thoughts εκτελεσμένο από καρδιάς.

So Much Is Lost για να θυμηθούμε τα νιάτα μας και να ανέβουμε λίγο, πριν κατέβουμε Beneath Broken Earth, αργά και βαριά, με τον Aaron Aedy και τον Steve Edmondson να εναρμονίζονται σε κίνηση και πάθος και τον Nick να γρυλίζει ανατριχιαστικά. Οι Paradise Lost μας άφησαν με το υπέροχο Ghosts και με όλο το Riverside να αναφωνεί χοροπηδώντας “For Jesus Christ”.

Και κάπως έτσι το υπνωτικό doom των Paradise Lost έκανε το θαύμα του. Η αγαπημένη μπάντα μας χάρισε μία υπέροχη βραδιά.  Σχεδόν κινηματογραφική ατμόσφαιρα με τους τοίχους του Riverside να γκρεμίζονται από  καταπληκτικές συμφωνίες doom/goth. Μέχρι την επόμενη φορά…!

Ο ήχος και τα φώτα και για τα δύο συγκροτήματα ήταν on point και το πλήρωμα του Riverside ήταν όπως πάντα φιλικότατο.

English Version

Moonspell and Paradise Lost are two bands that I have been following musically for about 25 years and yet I have never had the chance to see them live (don’t ask me how and why, I don’t know). The ticket was of course purchased in no time and February 12th, 2022 was painted on my calendar with bright colours.  Of course, we live in uncertain times, so the excitement fluctuated at normal levels for a while, up to 2-3 days before the concert. 

Newcastle Upon Tyne was Paradise Lost’s seventh stop on this short but highly anticipated Obsidian Moon UK Tour, and only Moonspell’s second stop, as it was Alunah who accompanied Paradise Lost on their first five shows. Of course we’re in the North East of England, which means indecisive skies, cold and windy days, and in one of Newcastle’s oldest venues right next to the river Tyne the crowd slowly starts to gather until the doors of the Riverside open to warm up – at last – in the company of the fiery wolves of Portugal, the one and only Moonspell, who will open the show. 

From 1995’s Wolfheart to 2021’s Hermitage, Moonspell is a band that stays true to what they love to create: soulful, emotional metal that stays with us even in the darkest of times. Approaching their 30th anniversary as a band, Moonspell are stronger than ever with Hermitage, their 13th studio album, being a sensitive, sophisticated but also a revolutionary, dark journey into our hearts.

The lights begin to fill the room, Fernando Ribeiro’s velvety voice begins to recite until Hugo Rebeiro attacks his drum kit creating the powerful rhythmic foundation of the masterful The Greater Good and the room fills with that unique explosive energy that Moonspell emit. The goth anthem Common Prayers follows and an ethereal melodicism will put us at ease…for a while.

Since Moonspell know very well how to keep the balances, it’s the turn of one of their all-time top tracks, which has roused all of us, their loyal fans,and not only…Opium, desire or will sung by Fernando Ribeiro, who alternates between tenor vocals and deadly growls with significant ease and raises our pulse dangerously. 

I had decided to stay away from any setlist that might have been posted on social media because of the unexpected excitement that overwhelms me when I hear songs I don’t expect, like the wonderful Breathe and Extinct! Aires Pereira’s bass and Hugo Rebeiro’s drums dance to seductive rhythms, with Ricardo Amorim’s ethereal yet thick guitars and Pedro Paixão’s symphonic keyboards creating the ultimate atmosphere in which Fernando’s vocals and recitations are reminiscent of a wolf dripping sweet blood. 

Hermits Saints, Apophthegmata and Hermitage were the other tracks that Moonspell presented us from their latest work and of course they made sure once again to take us back to the ’90s with the much loved Alma Mater but also with the epilogue of their performance: Full Moon Madness, during which Fernando grabs a set of drumsticks and hits them with mathematical precision oppossite the seated Hugo, stirring up Riverside for good.

I don’t think there could be a better band to open Paradises Lost’s Obsidian Moon Tour. Moonspell painted a wonderful musical landscape and they absorbed us in, through their mesmerizing energy, giving us with a magnificent performance and leaving us eager to see them live again.

Moonspell, we are definitely under your spell.

And after the fiery temperament of Portugal has warmed us up for good, it’s time for Halifax, England  and the masters of death doom metal & headliners, Paradise Lost.  Having been around as a band since 1988, Paradise Lost are currently touring Obsidian, their 16th and most recent album, released in 2020.

To my huge surprise (always a pleasant one) Paradise Lost opened their show with a super-favorite track of mine, from the massive Icon. Crushing drums from Waltteri Väyrynen, a fiery solo from Gregor Mackintosh and the very familiar voice of Nick Holmes took us back in time and our hearts fluttered to the sounds of Widow. 

The smoke thickens and Fall From Grace kicks in, slow, torturous and thoroughly indulging, with Blood And Chaos following in a similar stage atmosphere, with vocals and guitar riffs dancing wildly.  Faith Divides Us- Death Unites Us will follow and Paradise Lost will rock the Riverside down with this so powerful and melodic languidness.

For the next one we closed our eyes and indulged in the Eternal musical satisfaction that only Paradise Lost know how to deliver, from 1991 and Gothic, a landmark album for both the band and the genre. One Second Nick sings to us from 1997’s self-titled and with a single jump we’re transported to 2020 and Serenity, an Obsidian track I confess I hadn’t paid much attention to. Steady drums, menacing and low bass, thick riffs and lots of smoke!    

The very familiar and melancholic intro of the next track was the first attempt to mosh pit by some people (no comments):  As I Die and Paradise Lost in full musical nirvana have awakened all our senses, with the blue rotating lights making this atmosphere even more magical. Last Time was definitely a more successful attempt by some to mosh pit and the only track that was played from Draconian Times, a favourite of many of us. 

Say Just Words was the track with which Paradise Lost said their first goodnight to us with Waltteri Väyrynen motivating and guiding us through the clapping, and we certainly couldn’t stop jumping around until the forced and sudden closing. After a short break Paradise Lost took to the stage for a crushing encore, with Nick Holmes taking the stage first, whispering: drifting through loss, we escape from the cost of the pain, the healing through years so obscured by the tears and the strain..and until the whole band gathered on stage and to give us their ultimate best, with a Darker Thoughts performed from the heart.

So Much Is Lost to reminisce about our youth and lift out spirits, before descending Beneath Broken Earth, slow and heavy, with Aaron Aedy and Steve Edmondson harmonising in movement and musical passion and Nick grunting creepily. Paradise Lost left us with the wonderful Ghosts and with the whole of Riverside exclaiming and bouncing “For Jesus Christ”.

The irresistible hypnotic aura of Paradise Lost has done its miracle. The beloved band gave us a terrific night.  Almost cinematic atmosphere with the walls of the Riverside being shattered by amazing doom/goth symphonies.  Until we meet again…!

Sound and lights for both bands were amazing and the crew of Riverside was, as always, spot on.
