Κατηφορίζοντας στην πλατεία Νερού το απόγευμα της Τετάρτης 22 Ιουλίου λοιπόν ο πήχης ήταν πολύ ψηλά. Έφτασα στο χώρο με καθυστέρηση και δεν πρόλαβα ολόκληρο το σετ των Meden Agan ωστόσο από ότι πληροφορήθηκα αυτό που πρόλαβα και άκουσα ήταν αντιπροσωπευτικό της εμφάνισης τους, που ήταν καλός ήχος και πολύ καλή εμφάνιση για τη μπάντα. Ακριβώς αυτό που πρέπει να κάνει μια μπάντα όταν της δίνεται μια ευκαιρία να βρεθεί μπροστά στο κοινό ενώς τόσο μεγάλου φεστιβάλ όσο το Release Athens.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή με ένα χρονοβόρο θεωρώ changeover οι Rhapsody Of Fire. «Πουλέν» των Manowar μιας και είναι και στην δισκογραφική του συγκροτήματος εμφανιστηκαν μπροστά στο διψασμένο για γρήγορο epic metal κοινό ορεξάτοι. Με σετ που ικανοποίησε τους οπαδούς ακόμη και αν καψαλίζονταν ακόμη απ τον ήλιο και αρκετά καλό ήχο στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του σετ (κάποια στιγμή αντιμετώπισαν ένα πρόβλημα και έκανα μια μικρή διακοπή) ήταν μια ευχάριστη επική προθέρμανση.

Στις 20.30 όπως είχε ανακοινωθεί στο πρόγραμμα από τη διοργανώτρια εταιρεία, οι θρυλικοί Rotting Christ ανεβαίνουν στη σκηνή. Πάρα πολύ μεγάλο μέρος του κοινού με μπλούζες Rotting Christ, καμία ωστόσο στο merchandise. Εντυπωσιακή απουσία η αλήθεια είναι το merch των Christ. Με το που ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή το κοινό τους αποθεώνει. Με πάρα πολύ καλό ήχο η ιστορική μπάντα ανεβαίνει στη σκηνή και ξεσηκώνει. «Τρια χρόνια είναι πάρα πολλά ….» Σετ με κλασσικές και αγαπημένες στιγμές του συγκροτήματος, καπονογόνα να συνοδεύουν τα πολύ αγαπημένα και ένα συναίσθημα χαράς να ξεχειλίζει στην πλατεία νερού που ξαναβρέθηκε μπάντα και κοινό να ανταλλάξουν ενέργειες και «1, 2, 3 … Societas Satanas». Κορυφαία στιγμή το King Of A Stellar War που δονήθηκε και ο τελευταίος σβέρκος στην πολατεία Νερού!  Βλέποντας την ταλαιπωρία ζωγραφισμένη στο πρόσοπω του Θέμη ωστόσο από πολύ νωρίς στο σετ προβληματίστηκα, η ζέστη ή το κενό αυτών των 3 χρόνων άφησε το στίγμα του. Ο Σάκης ευχαριστεί το κοινό και τους Manowar και δίνει ραντεβού για την επόμενη φορά.

Όπως περιμέναμε από το πρόγραμμα οι Manowar ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή μετά από ένα πολύ μεγάλο κενό στις 23.00.  Μια τεράστια οθόνη πίσω τους, ένας ήχος ογκόλιθος, ο μεγαλύτερος που έχει γίνει σε φεστιβαλ όπως μας είπε ο De Mayo και η μπάντα ετοιμοπόλεμη. Eric Adams στα 70 του να κάνει το κοινό να παραμιλά με την ικανότητά του. Στην αρχή μου φάνηκε οτι από το 2019 στο 2022 είχε μια σχετική φθορά αλλά καθώς περνούσε η ώρα με διέψευσε πανηγυρικά. Και ας μη γελιόμαστε σε αυτές τις ηλικίες τα 3 χρόνια μετράνε διαφορετικά. Το μπάσο του De Mayo απ’ ότι μας πληροφόρησαν ακουγόταν μέχρι και στο Βύρωνα ενω δεν πρέπει να έχω ακούσει ποτέ χειρότερο ήχο σε κιθάρα. Σα να του είπαν πριν το live «Επειδη ήσουν κακό παιδί θα στο βγάλουμε την παραμόρφωση απ’ την κιθάρα».

Φυσικά η μπάντα αξιοποίησε την ευκαιρία να παρουσιάσει υλικό από την επερχόμενη κυκλοφορία της και για την εξυπηρέτηση του σκοπού αυτού ανέβασε επί σκηνής τον Κωνσταντίνο Καζάκο ντύμενο Τηλέμαχο με αφήγηση playback (αλήθεια γιατί; ) και λίγο πιο πριν τον James Cosmo. Βέβαια η αλήθεια είναι οτι τα προηχογραφημένα ήταν αρκετά ενώ η αλήθεια είναι οτι ο Joe είχε όρεξη για κουβέντα… Μας εξήγησε το concept του νέου άλμπουμ, πήρε την ευκαιρία να μας πει πόσο θαυμάζει τον Ελληνικό πολιτισμό αλλά και να απαντήσει για τον «πολεμο ανακοινώσεων» που είχε προηγηθεί τις προηγούμενες μέρες σχετικά με την εμφάνισή τους στο Barcelona Rock Fest. Φυσικά δεν έλειψαν και τα σόλο του μπάσου που έκοψε μια, μια τις χορδές και τις έδωσε στο κοινό. Το set περιείχε το λατρεμένο Defender αλλα σε εκείνο το σημείο θεωρώ οτι τα υποτονικά τραγούδια ήταν πολλά και απονεύρωσαν την ενέργεια της εμφάνισής τους. Το σετ λιστ είχε επετειακές επιλογές από λιγότερο αγαπημένα άλμπουμ με αποτέλεσμα να μην έχει την ίδια καταιγιστική ενέργεια του 2019. Τελική αποτιμήση ουσιαστικά #ΜΟΝΟERICADAMS.

I was there in 2019 because it was announced that it was the last Manowar concert and for historical reasons only I was there. For historical reasons, because I’m not a Manowarior, because I often mock their aesthetics, and because my musical tastes are different. At the time I was blown away by the unreal Eric Adams and the pulse of the very tight and powerful setlist they had prepared.

Descending to Release Athens on the afternoon of Wednesday 22 July, the bar was set very high. I arrived at the venue late and didn’t catch Meden Agan’s entire set however from what I was informed what I caught and heard was representative of their performance, which was good sound and a very good performance for the band. Exactly what a band should do when given a chance to be in front of the audience at a festival as big as Release Athens.

Next on stage with what I consider a time-consuming changeover were Rhapsody Of Fire. “Proteges” of Manowar since they are also on the band’s label they appeared in front of the thirsty for fast epic metal audience. With a set that satisfied the fans even if they were still burning from the sun and a pretty good sound for most of the set (at one point they encountered a problem and took a short break) it was a pleasant epic warm up.

At 8.30pm as announced in the time schedule by the promoter, the legendary Rotting Christ took to the stage. Many of  the fans wore  Rotting Christ shirts, none however were sold on the merchandise stand. An impressive absence to tell you the truth for Rotting Christ’s merch. As soon as they took to the stage the crowd cheered them on. With a very, very good sound the historic band takes the stage and gets the crowd going. “Three years is too long ….” said Sakis. Set of classic and favorite moments of the band, accompanying the much loved ones and a feeling of joy overflowing in the venue where the band and the audience were again found exchanging energies and “1, 2, 3 … Societas Satanas”. Best moment of the show, was King Of A Stellar War which vibrated even the last neck in the Water Square!  Seeing the suffering painted on Themis’ face however very early in the set I was puzzled, the heat or the void of those 3 years left its mark. Sakis thanks the audience and Manowar and makes an appointment for next time.

As we expected from the programme Manowar took the stage after a very long gap at 23.00.  A huge screen behind them, a wall of  sound, the biggest ever at a festival as De Mayo told us and the band ready to go. Eric Adams in his 70s making the audience gasp with his ability. At first it seemed to me that from 2019 to 2022 he had a certain amount of wear and tear but as time went on he proved me solemnly wrong. And let’s not kid ourselves at these ages 3 years counts differently. De Mayo’s bass from what we were informed could be heard as far away as Vironas, while I must have never heard a worse sound on a guitar. It was as if he was told before the gig “Because you’ve been a bad boy we’re going to take the distortion out of your guitar”. Of course the band took the opportunity to present material from their upcoming release and to serve this purpose they brought on stage Konstantinos Kazakos dressed as Telemachus with playback narration (really why? ) and James Cosmo a bit before. Of course the truth is that the pre-recorded material was enough and the truth is that Joe was in the mood for a chat… He explained the concept of the new album, took the opportunity to tell us how much he admires the Greek culture and also to answer for the “announcement war” that had preceded the previous days regarding their appearance at Barcelona Rock Fest. Of course, there was no lack of bass solos as he cut the strings one by one and gave them to the audience. The set included the beloved Defender but at that point I think the down tempo songs were too much and drained the energy of their performance. The set list had anniversary selections from lesser loved albums so it lacked the same thunderous energy of 2019. Final score was essentially #ERICADAMSRULEZ.
