Dark Tranquillity present today the second video/single from their upcoming album Endtime Signals, entitled Not Nothing. As the band’s vocalist Mikael Stanne explains in the following video, it’s a song that took them quite a while to complete and the lyrics are about how “insignificant” we are. “Πρώτα απ’ όλα, όταν κυκλοφόρησε, ήμουν ένα οργισμένο αλκοολικό καθίκι”, δήλωσε ο Taylor. “Και όταν το άκουσα, η μίξη με έβγαλε κάπως εκτός εαυτού και δεν έδινα σημασία στα τραγούδια. Ακολουθούσα κατά κάποιο τρόπο το κοπάδι σε αυτό.

“Αλλά τότε ο [κιθαρίστας των Stone Sour] Josh Rand, ο οποίος ήταν μεγάλος οπαδός των Metallica, πήρε την deluxe έκδοση που είχε το συνοδευτικό DVD όπου έπαιζαν όλο το άλμπουμ στον χώρο των προβών τους. Και βλέποντάς το, μπόρεσα να επικεντρωθώ στα τραγούδια. Δεν είχα κολλήσει στο πώς ακούγονταν. Μπορούσα να ακούσω τι συνέβαινε, και αμέσως κατάλαβα καλύτερα τι ήταν.

“Έτσι, τώρα όταν το ακούω, πιστεύω ότι πολλά από τα πράγματα είναι πολύ καλά, και υπάρχουν μερικά καλά grooves σε αυτό που νομίζω ότι είναι πραγματικά υποτιμημένα. Θέλω να πω, αυτό το ομώνυμο κομμάτι είναι γαμάτο, το ξέρεις;”

Οι Metallica γνωρίζουν επίσης πολύ καλά τη γνώμη όλων για τη μίξη του St. Anger. Η μπάντα έκανε πρόσφατα πλάκα με τον ήχο του snare drum ζωντανά, τον οποίο μπορείτε πραγματικά να κατεβάσετε και να χρησιμοποιήσετε στη δική σας μουσική εδώ.

Corey Taylor in an interview with Revolver, explained that he got on the “hating St. Anger because of the mix” train when the record first came out. Taylor said what really changed his opinion was watching the accompanying St. Anger DVD and having the band walk listeners through the songs.

“First of all, when it came out, I was a raging alcoholic prick,” said Taylor. “And when I listened to it, the mix kind of threw me off, and I wasn’t paying attention to the songs. I was kind of following the herd on that.

“But then [Stone Sour guitarist] Josh Rand, who was a massive Metallica fan, he got the deluxe version that had the companion DVD where they played the whole album in their rehearsal space. And watching that, I could hone in on the songs. I wasn’t stuck on how it sounded. I could listen to what was going on, and it immediately gave me a better appreciation of what it was.

“So now when I listen to it, I think a lot of the stuff’s really good, and there are some good grooves on it that I think are really underappreciated. I mean, that title track is a motherfucker, you know?”

Metallica is also well aware of everyone’s opinion on the St. Anger mix. The band recently poked fun at the snare drum sound live, which you can actually download and use in your own music here.

Στο “Memorial” οι SOEN συνεχίζουν από εκεί που σταμάτησαν με το «Imperial» αλλά έχουν αναπτυχθεί προς δύο αντίθετες πλευρές. Η πρώτη είναι μια πιο άγρια με αιχμηρά κιθαριστικά riffs και τύμπανα σε πιο πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο και η δεύτερη είναι λιγότερο βαριά με τη δομή των τραγουδιών να είναι πιο προβλέψιμη και έτσι πιο “προσβάσιμη” για ένα μεγαλύτερο τύπο κοινού. Ωστόσο, αυτό δεν σημαίνει ότι εγκαταλείπουν τα progressive στοιχεία τους τα οποία κρατάει και αποδίδει κυρίως ο εκπληκτικός Martin Lopez του οποίου το drumming βρίσκεται στην πρώτη γραμμή της παραγωγής. Καιρός ήταν, αν με ρωτάτε! Ήταν τόσο κρίμα να ακούω τη μπάντα ζωντανά και να συνειδητοποιήω ότι ακούγονται καλύτερα ζωντανά απ’ ό,τι στις δουλειές τους στο στούντιο. Συνεχίζουν στο μοντέρνο ύφος που είχαν στο Imperial και το πάνε ένα βήμα μπροστά με πιο διαφορετικές ιδέες που επεκτείνονται μέχρι στις Pink Floydικές επιρροές όπως το Vitals. Το άλμπουμ περιλαμβάνει επίσης μια guest εμφάνιση της Elisa στο Hollowed.  

Οι SOEN είναι κάτι μεταξύ ενός κύματος οργής που έρχεται συντριπτικά στην ακτή και πλημμυρίζει τα πάντα και ενός κύματος θλίψης που φτάνει μέχρι το λαιμό σου και κάνει τα μάτια σου να δακρύζουν και είναι αυτή η οξύμωρη μοναδική ποιότητα που τους κάνει να ξεχωρίζουν. Κάθε άλμπουμ είναι ένα νέο συναισθηματικό ταξίδι και μην χάσετε ποτέ την ευκαιρία να τους δείτε ζωντανά αν παίζουν κάπου στην πόλη, χώρα σας. Ευχαριστήστε με αργότερα.

SOEN is the type of unique kind of band that can reach through music fans in between genres and not only grab their attention but also make them fans. In my opinion what makes them stand out from the moment you listen to them is the amazing color in Joel’s voice which can deliver both emotion and technique without compromising either one of the two elements.

In “Memorial” SOEN are picking up from where Imperial left off but has grown towards two opposing sides. The first is a fiercer with edgy guitar riffs and drums in a more eminent role and the second one is a less heavy one with the structure of the songs being more foreseeable and thus “accessible” for a larger type of audience. However, this doesn’t mean they abandon their progressive shapes which are mostly held and delivered by the amazing Martin Lopez whose drumming is in the forefront of the production. It was about time if you ask me! It was such a shame listening to the band live and realizing they sound better live than they do in their studio work. They carry on in the modern style they had in Imperial and they take it a step forward with more diverse ideas expanding to the ends of Pink Floydish influences like Vitals. The album features also a guest appearance by Elisa in Hollowed.

SOEN is something between a wave of rage that comes crushing to the shore and floods everything and a wave of sorrow that comes up to your neck and makes your eyes tear up and it is that oxymorous unique quality that makes them stand out. Each album is a new emotional journey and never miss out on the chance to seen them live if they are playing somewhere around your town, country. Thank me later.

Όταν το “Foregone” ανακοινώθηκε για πρώτη φορά το περασμένο φθινόπωρο, ο frontman των IN FLAMES Anders Fridén δήλωσε: “Μπαίνοντας στις ηχογραφήσεις του “Foregone”, θέλαμε να κάνουμε έναν δίσκο που θα ήταν έντονα κιθαριστικός και θα είχε μια ισχυρή βάση μεταξύ του μπάσου και των ντραμς. Εξακολουθούσαμε να προσεγγίζουμε τη σύνθεση των τραγουδιών μας με τον ίδιο τρόπο, όπως κάναμε πάντα, ως μια αντιπαράθεση μεταξύ μελωδίας και επιθετικότητας. Αυτό είναι το DNA της μουσικής μας. Από το στιχουργικό κομμάτι των πραγμάτων, δεν υπήρχε έλλειψη έμπνευσης για να αντλήσουμε, ειδικά από την έννοια του χρόνου”.

Ο ίδιος συνέχισε: “Η ανθρωπότητα στο σύνολό της αναγκάστηκε να επιβραδύνει και να πάρει μια ανάσα. Σε αυτό το διάλειμμα, πολλοί από εμάς ξοδεύαμε χρόνο για να αξιολογήσουμε και να επαναπροσδιορίσουμε τις προτεραιότητές μας. Ο χρόνος είναι μια σταθερά, αλλά το τι κάνουμε με αυτόν και το πώς τον αντιλαμβανόμαστε ποικίλλει. Ιδιαίτερα τώρα που βλέπουμε πού ο κόσμος φαίνεται να κατευθύνεται ταχύτερα από ποτέ”.

Και κατέληξε ο Fridén: “Είναι τρελό ότι μετά από όλα αυτά είμαστε ακόμα εδώ και στο δέκατο τέταρτο άλμπουμ μας. Αισθάνομαι ότι έχουμε βρει μια εξαιρετική ισορροπία μεταξύ του παρελθόντος, του παρόντος και του μέλλοντος με το ‘Foregone’. Αυτή είναι μια νέα εποχή για τους IN FLAMES!”

Τον περασμένο Ιούνιο, οι IN FLAMES χώρισαν τους δρόμους τους με τον μπασίστα Bryce Paul και τον αντικατέστησαν με τον Liam Wilson (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN). Ο Bryce εντάχθηκε στους IN FLAMES μετά την αποχώρηση του μακροχρόνιου μπασίστα Peter Iwers. Ο Iwers εγκατέλειψε τους IN FLAMES τον Νοέμβριο του 2016, λέγοντας ότι αποχωρεί από το συγκρότημα “για να ακολουθήσει άλλες προσπάθειες”.

Και εμείς λέμε, ‘Ω, σκατά. Δεν το είχα σκεφτεί αυτό. Οπότε δεν το σκέφτομαι καθόλου αυτό. Αλλά 30 χρόνια – αυτό είναι τρελό.

“Αν με ρωτούσατε στην αρχή της καριέρας μας αν θα το κάναμε αυτό για 30 χρόνια, θα έλεγα: “Με τίποτα, φίλε”. [Γέλια] Οπότε είναι τρελό”, συνέχισε. “Είμαι τόσο, τόσο ευγνώμων που μπορούμε να κάνουμε αυτό που κάνουμε. Δουλεύω με το πάθος μου, το χόμπι μου, το οποίο είναι τρελό, όταν το σκέφτεσαι. Είμαι ευγνώμων για όλους τους οπαδούς που μας μεταφέρουν σε όλο τον κόσμο και έρχονται στις συναυλίες μας και ακούνε τη μουσική μας”.

Swedish/American metallers IN FLAMES have released “The Journey Home”, a 34-minute documentary chronicling the band’s last European tour and the making of their fourteenth studio album, “Foregone”, which arrived in February via Nuclear Blast. Check it out below.

When “Foregone” was first announced last fall, IN FLAMES frontman Anders Fridén said in a statement: “Going into the ‘Foregone’ sessions, we wanted to make a record that was heavily guitar-driven, and that had a strong foundation between the bass and drums. We still approached our songwriting the same way, as we always have, as a juxtaposition between melody and aggression. That’s the DNA of our music. From the lyrical end of things, there was no shortage of inspiration to draw from, especially the concept of time.”

He continued: “Humanity as a whole was forced to slow down and take breather. In that break, many of us spent time evaluating and reprioritizing. Time is a constant, but what do we do with it and how we perceive it varies. Especially now looking at where the world seems to be headed faster than ever before.”

Fridén concluded: “It’s crazy that after everything we are still here and on our fourteenth album. I feel that we’ve found a great balance between the past, the present and the future with ‘Foregone’. This is a new era of IN FLAMES!”

This past June, IN FLAMES parted ways with bassist Bryce Paul and has replaced him with Liam Wilson (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN).

Wilson made his live debut with IN FLAMES on June 7 at the Release Athens 2023 festival in Athens, Greece.

Bryce joined IN FLAMES following the departure of longtime bassist Peter Iwers.

Iwers quit IN FLAMES in November 2016, saying that he was leaving the band “to pursue other endeavors.”

In a recent interview with Oran O’Beirne of Bloodstock TV, Anders was asked if there are plans for him and his bandmates to commemorate in any way the upcoming 30th anniversary of their debut album, “Lunar Strain”, in 2024. He responded: “I think that’s more in the business area, those people. In the band, we don’t really think about those things. Honestly, when I’m out touring, we have fans coming up to us and saying, ‘Oh, today this album turned this amount of years’ and ‘Today ‘The Jester Race’ celebrated its what[ever] birthday.’ And we’re, like, ‘Oh, shit. I didn’t think about that.’ So I don’t think about that at all. But 30 years — that’s crazy.

“If you asked me early in our career if we would do this for 30 years, I’d be, like, ‘No way, man.’ [Laughs] So it’s insane,” he continued. “I’m so, so grateful that we can do what we do. I work with my passion, my hobby, which is insane, when you think about it. I’m grateful for all the fans that carry us around the world and come to our shows and listen to our music.”

Για ακόμη μία φορά λοιπόν το σύγχρονο metal μουσικό μείγμα των Orbit Culture είναι καλοδουλεμένο και εξαιρετικά εκτελεσμένο. Oι Orbit Culture χτυπάνε bullseye, ακούγονται δεμένοι και στοχευμένοι και καταφέρνουν να παραδώσουν ένα επιβλητικό Descent, διάρκειας 50 σχεδόν λεπτών, με αρκετά δυνατά τραγούδια.

Και λέω αρκετά γιατί σίγουρα δεν ήταν όλα τα τραγούδια εξίσου μαγνητικά, στην δική μου περίπτωση τουλάχιστον. Και σίγουρα αυτό δεν ήταν λόγω σύνθεσης αλλά περισσότερο λόγω παραγωγής μάλλον. Ταπείνη μου γνώμη πως σε κάποια κομμάτια του δίσκου όλοι οι ήχοι είναι παρόντες στην ίδια εμβέλεια και πυκνότητα, με αποτέλεσμα να μου ακούγονται όλα απλά too much.

Τραγούδια που ξεχωρίζουν για εμένα είναι το Sorrower με εξαιρετικές κιθάρες και ένα κομμάτι που σε κάνει απλά να χαμογελάς από ικανοποίηση, το καλύτερο για εμένα κομμάτι του Descent. Όπως επίσης και τo Undercity, το progressive-like From The Inside και το The Aisle Of Fire, τα οποία είναι απλά συμπαγείς μπάλες κατεδάφισης.

Όσοι γνωρίζουν τους Orbit Culture ήδη, αλλά και όχι μόνο, σίγουρα θα μείνουν ευχαριστημένοι με το Descent που νομίζω πως συνεχίζει από εκεί που μας άφησε το Nija του 2020. Δυναμικοί, ενεργητικοί, με αρκετό χορταστικό περιεχόμενο, πλούσιες συνθέσεις και πολύχρωμες μελωδίες , οι Orbit Culture μας δείχνουν ότι είναι σε εξαιρετική φόρμα και μας χαρίζουν ένα δυναμικό και καλοδουλεμένο Descent που σίγουρα θα τους ανεβάσει στο επόμενο σκαλοπάτι της καριέρας τους.

Orbit Culture are known in the metal scene since 2013. After several line-up changes, they came to shake things up with their amazing album Nija (2020) and their latest EP, entitled Shaman (2021). Melodic death metal with dark groove and metalcore doses of extremely high quality, were the main sounds that Orbit Culture gave us over the last 3 years and now I’m curious to see if and how the four-piece Swedish band will evolve their sound in their latest album Descent, which was released on August 18 via Seek & Strike records.

In a nutshell Orbit Culture’s modern metal music mix is well crafted and superbly executed and they do hit bullseye once again, as they sound cohesive and focused, and they manage to deliver a dominating Descent, which lasts almost 50 minutes long and it is filled with several powerful songs.

However, not all the songs were equally magnetic during the Descent, not in my case at least. And certainly, this wasn’t due to composition or performance issues, but I think it was mostly a production issue. It’s my humble opinion that in couple tracks of the album all sounds are present at the same depth and density, and they just sounded too much to me.

Songs, though, that stand out for me are the Sorrower, with excellent guitars; a track that just makes you smile with satisfaction, and for me the best track of Descent, as well as the Undercity, the progressive-like From the Inside and The Aisle of Fire, which sound like solid wrecking balls.

Those who know Orbit Culture already, but not only, will surely be pleased with Descent as, I believe, it continues from where Nija (2020) left us. Dynamic, energetic, with plenty of satisfying content, rich compositions and colourful melodies, Orbit Culture show us that they are in great shape and give us a powerful and well-crafted Descent that will surely help them climb onto the next step of their career.

Αντίστοιχα στις μπάντες που έχουν επιβεβαιώσει ήδη τη συμμετοχή τους στο SUMMER BREEZE τις επόμενης χρονιάς οι ARCHITECTS έχουν αντίστοιχη θέση με το όνομά τους να φιγουράρει με μεγάλα γράμματα δίπλα σε αυτό των AMON AMARTH.

Ωστόσο δεν γίνεται να αγνοήσουμε το γεγονός ότι τα συγκεκριμένα συγκροτήματα εκπροσωπούν ένα ήχο αρκετά λιγότερο ακραίο και ειδικά στις πιο πρόσφατες κυκλοφορίες τους γίνονται όλο και περισσότερο pop παρά metal. Παράλληλα συγκροτήματα όπως οι BE’LAKOR και ARCHSPIRE εμφανίζονται νωρίς και για μικρής διάρκειας σετ και προκαλούν πανικό. Βέβαια, για να είμαστε δίκαιοι, τα συγκεκριμένα φεστιβάλ BLOODSTOCK & DOWNLOAD έχουν ρισκάρει στο παρελθόν ανεβάζοντας για πρώτη φορά στην κορυφή του billing τους συγκροτήματα όπως οι GOJIRA, MASTODON, AMON AMARTH και SABATON.

Φέτος και στη χώρα μας είδαμε τους BLEED FROM WITHIN να είναι η μπάντα που ήρθε για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα, να εμφανίζεται 18.00 μες τον ήλιο και να κερδίζει τις εντυπώσεις ενώ οι θερμοί οπαδοί τους ήταν εκεί για να τους αποθεώσουν. Πρώτη φορά φέτος είδαμε PARKWAY DRIVE στην κορυφή του billing φεστιβαλικής μέρας και το αποτέλεσμα δικαίωσε την επιλογή των διοργανωτών.

Έφτασε η ώρα της αλλαγής φρουράς; Πόσο μας ενοχλεί όταν οι SABATON παίζουν «πάνω» από τους BLIND GUARDIAN;

Δεν εγκαταλείπουν βέβαια την “comfort zone” τους, αλλά επιστρέφουν στον ήχο που τους έκανε το συγκρότημα που αγαπούν οι οπαδοί τους. Ωμά, γρήγορα, κοφτερά riffs και εκρηκτικό drumming σηματοδοτούν τον ήχο του Goliath και τον κάνουν να ταιριάζει απόλυτα με μια γερή δόση αδρεναλίνης, ακριβώς το είδος που χρειάζεσαι για να ανεβάσεις πίεση.

Δημιουργημένοι το 1992 στο Μόντρεαλ του Κεμπέκ του Καναδά, οι KATAKLYSM κυκλοφορούν το 15ο στούντιο άλμπουμ τους και παραμένουν επίκαιροι σαν να μην έχουν περάσει 30 χρόνια από τότε που ξεκίνησαν. Σε παραγωγή του François Dagenais, με τον Colin Richardson (Carcass, Machine Head, Overkill, Trivium, κ.α.), ο ήχος είναι μοντέρνος και heavy, διατηρώντας παράλληλα την ωμότητα που χαρακτηρίζει το στυλ-σήμα κατατεθέν τους. Το artwork έγινε από τον Eliran Kantor (Kreator, Helloween, Testament μεταξύ άλλων).

Οπότε, για να τα συνοψίσουμε όλα και να φτάσουμε στην ουσία, μου αρέσει το Goliath; Το συνιστώ; Η ταχύτητα και τα εκρηκτικά ξεσπάσματα σε συνδυασμό με τα groove, mid tempo μελωδικά μέρη θυμίζουν τους παλιούς καλούς KATAKLYSM. Η παραγωγή είναι εξαίσια αλλά δεν είναι τόσο βίαιη όσο οι πρώτες τους κυκλοφορίες. Παρόλα αυτά έχει πολλά σημεία μέσα του, και σε μια συνολική εκτίμηση είναι ένας καλός δίσκος – κατά τη γνώμη μου καλύτερος από το Unconquered.

Back to basics! That was the first thought that popped into mind when I started listening to KATAKLYSM’s new album “Goliath” out now on Nuclear Blast Records. The Canadian death metallers have been silent since 2020’s “Unconquered”.  Three weeks before the album’s release, the band announced drummer Oli Beaudoin had left the band and was replaced by James Payne, and the difference is quite notable. So “Goliath” is the first release with their new line up and it is refreshingly brutal and it reminds us of the blasting fast sound that made us like them in the first place.

They are not stepping out of their “comfort-zone” but they are returning to the sound that made them the band their fans love. Raw, fast, sharp riffs and blasting drumming marks the sound of Goliath and makes it a perfect fit to a heavy dose of adrenaline, just the kind you need to get your blood pumping.

Born in 1992 in Montreal, Québec, Canada, KATAKLYSM are offering their 15^th studio album and they remain current like it’s not been 30 years since they started. Self-produced by François Dagenais, with Colin Richardson (Carcass, Machine Head, Overkill, Trivium, etc), the sound is modern and heavy while maintaining a rawness that marks their trademark style. The artwork was done by Eliran Kantor (Kreator, Helloween, Testament among others).

So, to sum it all up and get to the bottom line, do I like Goliath? Do I recommend it? The speed and the exploding outbursts combined with groove, mid tempo melodic parts remind us of the good old KATAKLYSM. The production is exquisite yet it is not as violent as their early releases. However it has many parts in it, and in an overall view it is a good album – in my opinion better than Unconquered.

In a new interview with Sonic Perspectives collaborator Rodrigo Altaf, VOLBEAT frontman Michael Poulsen spoke about the band’s recent split with longtime guitarist Rob Caggiano. Rob‘s replacement for VOLBEAT‘s current tour is Flemming C. Lund of the Danish extreme metal outfit THE ARCANE ORDER. Michael said : “There’s a statement on the net [about the split with Rob], and I can’t go into too much details. But the thing was, three weeks before a tour, we suddenly became a three-piece. And, of course, for us, [we initially thought], ‘Let’s just go out as a three-piece. This is the situation we are in now.’ But at the end of the day, when we were sitting down and I was about to do the setlist, of course we became a little bit handicapped. So, there was different options to who we were going to give a call to help us out, but since I already worked with Flemming and I knew Flemming, I gave him a call, even though he said, ‘I have no idea how VOLBEAT sounds like.’ [Laughs] He’s only into death metal. So he said, ‘I just have to listen to a lot of VOLBEAT records, I guess.’ Of course he knew VOLBEAT — everybody knows VOLBEAT in Denmark — but he was not listening to VOLBEAT. So he said, ‘Give me a few days just to actually figure out what you guys are playing,’ beside the stuff that you hear on the radio. And he took up the challenge, and we made an agreement and he’s helping out VOLBEAT for this year.”

VOLBEAT played its first concert with Lund on June 10 at the Rockfest festival in Hyvinkää, Finland.

Just five days earlier, VOLBEAT announced that it had officially parted ways with Caggiano. No reason was given for the split, but the remaining bandmembers said that they wished their “brother Rob all the best with everything he does in the future.” They went on to thank Rob “for ten amazing years.”

In a recent interview with Finland’s Chaoszine, GOJIRA frontman Joseph Duplantier was asked if there are specific foods or drinks that he wouldn’t have before a show that he feels affect his vocal cords, and on the opposite side, something that he thinks helps him with singing. He responded: “I’m sure I can discover more things about that. But I feel what I need before a show and… For example, before this interview I was just slicing some avocado, ’cause avocado helps. It’s healthy fats, and I like to eat a little bit of that or a banana or something that sort of sticks to your pipes. Definitely I’m not eating for three hours before a show.”

He continued: “There’s a lot to say about food, of course, and it’s notorious that dairy is not really good before singing, for example. I don’t do dairies for a long time now; I’m a vegan. I remember struggling before being vegan to manage my energy on stage. The energy level was good at first, and then the first time I screamed, I would almost pass out sometimes because I’m still digesting. Because at the beginning of our career, we were opening a lot, so we would eat and then go on stage, for example. This is very dangerous, because your body is trying to process the food, and if you wanna use your entire body to sing, as you should if you’re a singer, there’s gonna be a lot of things in the way and the body gets confused. And I almost fell passed out on stage multiple times because I was not done digesting.

“Also, I wanna say this on a side note, but since I quit animal products and I eat plant-based [foods] only, my energy increased by ten or a hundred,” Joseph added. “I don’t know, because how would I know? Every time we finish a show, I’m still full of energy and I keep going. I can keep going and going and going. And back in the day, before I changed my diet, at the end of the show, I was at the end of my life. And I was young; I was 20[-something] … Dude, I should be the opposite, right? But then I changed my diet, and now I can go anytime. Even if I eat in this three-hour window, it’s gonna be super light, so it’s gonna be acceptable. But if I would eat cheese or meat or heavy things, it’s impossible.

“So I think although I don’t have the healthiest lifestyle — I drink a few beers after the show; I’m a night owl, so I don’t sleep a lot. I try to catch up on sleep in naps. But I do drink a lot of water and try to sleep as much as possible. These are my secrets — that are not secrets; everybody knows it [laughs], even for non-singers. But yeah, the diet change was crucial in my life.”

GENUS ORDINIS DEI are back with a new metal music series and full-length concept album entitled The Beginning.

The band unveiled their “Changing Star” music video & single which is the first video episode and single from The Beginning which is scheduled to be released on December 8, 2023 via Eclipse Records with distribution via The Orchard. The album was produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Tommaso Monticelli at Sonitus Studio in Crema, Italy. The video series was directed by Genus Ordinis Dei, and filmed by Steve Saints.

The Beginning is the fourth studio album from symphonic death metal band GENUS ORDINIS DEI , which redefines the way we listen to music and process cinematic theater. In simpler terms, the final product is an exceptional twelve-track album and a stunning set of representative videos called “Episodes,” that directly address the way we use our senses. Interspliced in a clever foreshadowing technique, are images of blood pouring over a stone, advancing like the crooked fingers of some skeletal miscreant, and when the Brother character starts singing, we are startled into the recognition that this is not merely some standard high-quality film, but the vibrant offspring we get from a brilliant, well-produced metal album. Symbolically, the parallel is clear. We are watching exquisite savages at the dawn of existence, who are shockingly similar to us in terms of their passion, physicality, and natural tendencies toward glorified violence. More thematically, GENUS ORDINIS DEI shows us quite clearly that brutality is the lifeblood of society, as we still so ironically fool ourselves with carefully crafted social constructs. The Beginning is not just music. It is an experience. A red dawn. An awakening.
 
“Changing Star” is the first episode of The Beginning, which introduces a Brother and a Sister character at the dawn of mankind, navigating a beautiful, brutal wilderness scarred with cannibalism and savagery. Visually gorgeous, the wide shots and slow-motion close-ups of the video component are emotionally stunning, while musically, we are provided the beginning of an epic metal symphony featuring a climactic mix of growl and traditional vocals.

Την Ημέρα του Αγίου Πατρικίου, δημοσιεύσατε μια φωτογραφία σας με τον Ed Sheeran στην παμπ. Πώς είναι να είσαι BFFs με έναν ποπ σταρ;

“Παράξενο. Μιλάω μαζί του πολύ τακτικά τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια. Όπως κι εγώ, είναι ένα πραγματικό αγόρι από το Σάφολκ. Όταν ήρθε στο στούντιο εκείνη τη μέρα [για τη συνεργασία μας], δεν κατέβηκε με μια καβάτζα δημοσιογράφων- εμφανίστηκε μόνος του, με την κιθάρα στην πλάτη, με την κουκούλα των Cradle Of Filth και συνέχισε. “Αυτό ήταν πολύ καιρό πριν! Εκείνη η εκκλησία κάηκε πολύ καιρό πριν φτάσουμε εκεί. Όταν κάναμε μια φωτογράφιση εκεί, μας παρενόχλησε ένας όχλος που κρατούσε δίκρανα. Ήταν εκεί επειδή η εκκλησία είχε γίνει στόχος [εμπρηστών] στο παρελθόν. Ήταν χωρίς στέγη επειδή είχε καεί, υποτίθεται από μια αίρεση μαγισσών”.

Η μαμά σας εξακολουθεί να είναι ερωτευμένη με τον Tom Araya;

“Σίγουρα έχει!”

Ποια είναι η απήχηση;

“Δεν ξέρω! Δεν το βλέπω ο ίδιος. Απλά ξέρω ότι το βλέπει γιατί βλέπω λογαριασμούς στο Instagram όπως “Tom Araya lovers” και το πρώτο όνομα που βλέπω είναι της μαμάς μου. Αλλά, μιλώντας γι’ αυτές τις περίεργες οικογενειακές αντιπαραθέσεις, χθες η οικογένεια του κιθαρίστα μας Anthony ήρθε σε μια συναυλία και μας έφερε ένα αντίγραφο του [αμφιλεγόμενου ιταλικού φιλμ τρόμου του 1975] Salò, Or The 120 Days Of Sodom”.

On St Patrick’s Day, you posted a photo of you and Ed Sheeran in the pub. What’s it like being BFFs with a pop star?

“Weird. I’ve spoken to him very regularly over the last two years. Like me, he’s a real Suffolk boy. When he came to the studio that day [for our collaboration], he didn’t come down with a cavalcade of reporters; he turned up on his own, guitar on his back, Cradle Of Filth hoodie on, and got on with it. It was fucking great.”

Sounds good! Can you update us on the collaboration?

“Ed’s done all his parts. It’s just bass and vocals for me to do. It’s exactly how you can imagine it’ll sound, if you can imagine Ed Sheeran with Cradle Of Filth. He plays acoustic guitar on it, but it’s heavy: it’s got a blastbeat in there. It’s a bit of everything. The plan is to do it as a charity single, because, first off, everybody jumped to the conclusion that we were doing this for the money and we wanted to knock that on the head. We’re hoping for it to be out this summer.”

It’s an odd collab, especially for a band who once got blamed for trying to set fire to a church in Colchester…

“That was a long time ago! That church got burned down a long time before we got there. When we did a photoshoot there, we got harassed by a pitchforkwielding mob. They were there because the church had been targeted [by arsonists] in the past. It was roofless because it had been burned down, allegedly by a witch cult.”

Does your mum still have a crush on Tom Araya?

“She certainly does!”

What’s the appeal?

“I don’t know! I don’t see it myself. I just know she does because I see Instagram accounts like ‘Tom Araya lovers’ and the first name I see is my mum’s. But, speaking of these weird familial juxtapositions, yesterday our guitar tech Anthony’s family came down to a show and brought us a copy of [controversial 1975 Italian horror film] Salò, Or The 120 Days Of Sodom.”

Is that a film you enjoy? It’s a hard one to get through.

“It’s a very hard film! I actually have a copy of it because one of our music videos [Babalon A.D. (So Glad For The Madness)] was based on it – loosely, thankfully. I’ve watched it once and the threat is that we’ll watch it again on a day off, but we’re trying to finish writing our current album while we’re touring, so I think we’ll put Salò on the backburner for now.”

Tell us about the next Cradle album.

“We started recording the new album in May. We’ve got a few summer festivals but this year, at least until mid-September, is about the new album. We’re just polishing off a few bits, but it’s exciting! It’s very modern, but it’s also very Dusk… And Her Embrace. Our fans are gonna love it!”

Do you think your new single, She Is A Fire, is a good indication of how the next Cradle album will sound? 

“It’s not a million miles off by any means. We’re not planning a total genre departure into ska or gabber [a type of EDM] any time soon!”

Are there any other horror films you’re aching to pay tribute to in a Cradle clip? 

“Evil Dead, Hellraiser, The Wicker Man, The Masque Of The Red Death, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Possession, Martyrs, The Witch, Häxan, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Cannibal Holocaust, Dagon… The list is pretty exhaustive, though it was the director’s [Andrew ‘WIZ’ Whiston] idea for the Babalon A.D. video to honour Salò. He even wanted to fill dog bowls with the same mash of ingredients to emulate poo as in the movie, but we convinced him that that might be pushing boundaries a little too far.”

Has there ever been a film that’s too scary for you?

“There was a movie not so long ago which had a scene where people’s eyes were getting burned out with red-hot pokers. I think it was a remake of Wrong Turn. That touched a nerve.

Σε ερώτηση αν το δεύτερο άλμπουμ των THE HALO EFFECT αποτελεί “συνέχεια” του “Days Of The Lost”, το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε πέρυσι, ο Stanne είπε: “Ναι, έτσι νομίζω. Νομίζω ότι ο Niclas και ο Jesper είχαν μεγαλύτερη αυτοπεποίθηση όσον αφορά τη σύνθεση των τραγουδιών τους, όπου είναι, όπως, “Ναι, αυτό θα λειτουργήσει”. Και υπάρχουν και κάποιοι ωραίοι πειραματισμοί στο άλμπουμ, αλλά μερικά από τα τραγούδια είναι απλά ξεκάθαρα, σαν να μην υπάρχουν ερωτήσεις. Είναι τόσο εύκολα και τόσο στο θέμα, ξέρεις. Οπότε είναι κάπως διασκεδαστικό όταν παίρνω την demo έκδοση ενός τραγουδιού και αρχίζω να σκέφτομαι τους στίχους και τα φωνητικά, είναι σαν να βγάζει νόημα. Απλά το ξέρω απ’ έξω. Είναι τόσο εύκολο. Το οποίο είναι – είναι περίεργο, αλλά είναι σαν να μου μιλάει με έναν τρόπο που λέω: “Εντάξει, ξέρω ακριβώς τι να κάνω και μπορώ να το τελειώσω μέσα σε λίγες μέρες”. Έτσι νιώθω μερικές φορές. Απλά ακούς ένα τραγούδι και λες, ‘Ναι, το ξέρω ήδη αυτό. Ξέρω ακριβώς τι να κάνω. Και θα είναι υπέροχο”.

Οι THE HALO EFFECT παρουσίασαν για πρώτη φορά δύο ολοκαίνουργια τραγούδια, τα “Become Surrender” και “The Defiant One“, κατά τη διάρκεια της περιοδείας τους στη Σουηδία τον Φεβρουάριο του 2023. Μιλώντας στο MoreCore.TV για την απόφαση να παρουσιάσουν νέο υλικό πριν αυτό ηχογραφηθεί και κυκλοφορήσει επίσημα, ο Mikael δήλωσε “Αποφασίσαμε να [δοκιμάσουμε λίγο το νερό], να δούμε αν ο κόσμος γουστάρει το νέο υλικό που γράφουμε. THE HALO EFFECT, the new project featuring five former members of the Swedish metal band IN FLAMES — Jesper Strömblad (guitar),Daniel Svensson (drums),Peter Iwers (bass),Niclas Engelin (guitar) and Mikael Stanne (vocals) — recently completed mixing its sophomore album. In a new interview with Finland’s Chaoszine, Stanne stated about the upcoming LP: “It’s done, and it sounds awesome. But, yeah, we were [originally] supposed to do an EP [instead of a full-length album] — we had that kind of plan — but then we realized, ‘Ah, maybe not.’ So now we’re gonna release the album beginning of next year and starting with singles and that kind of stuff soon. So it’s really exciting, because we worked really hard just to fit into all of our schedules to make sure that the album was kind of done in time, and then we figured out like a release schedule and a release date and all that stuff. So it’s been — not stressful, but we did a lot during a short period of time, which ended up being fantastic just because it turned out a much more confident album, I think. It’s very focused and you can, you can probably tell — at least from the people that I’ve played it to — that whereas the first time was kind of, like, ‘Hey, let’s figure out what we wanna do,’ whereas this is kind of, like, ‘This is exactly what we wanna do.'”

He added: “So it’s, it’s gonna be interesting. I can’t wait to have people hear it because I’m incredibly proud of it.”

Asked if the second THE HALO EFFECT album is a “continuation” of “Days Of The Lost”, which came out last year, Stanne said: “Yeah, I think so. I think Niclas and Jesper were more confident in terms of their songwriting, where it’s, like, ‘Yeah, this is gonna work.’ And there are some cool experimentation on the album as well, but some of the songs are just like straight up, like there’s no questions. It’s just so easy and so to the point, you know. So it’s kind of fun when I get the demo version of a song, and I start thinking about lyrics and vocals, it’s, like, it just makes sense. I just know this by heart. It’s so easy. Which is — it is weird, but it’s just, like, it speaks to me in a way that where I go like, ‘Okay, I know exactly what to do and I can finish it in a matter of days.’ That’s sometimes how it feels. You just hear a song and you go, like, ‘Yep, I know this already. I know exactly what to do. And it’s gonna be great.”

THE HALO EFFECT debuted two brand new songs, “Become Surrender” and “The Defiant One”, during its February 2023 Swedish tour. Speaking to MoreCore.TV about the decision to perform new material before it is officially recorded and released, Mikael said: “We decided to [test the water a little bit], see if people are into the new stuff that we’re writing. Not that it’s super different, but still… And it’s been fun to kind of, yeah, try things out and see if people are into it. And they seem to be digging it. So we’re really excited.”

Huge problems in the arrival of the campers of WACKEN OPEN AIR created  by the rain, forcing the organizers to ask them to stop their approaching the grounds, until further notice since the mud created big problems and the vehicles got stuck.

Now, “all metalheads in all kinds of motor vehicles” are asked to stop their journey to Wacken or to not start their journey to Wacken in the first place: This is valid until the end of the festival.

The organisers of the world’s biggest open air heavy metal festival state that “safety and supply cannot be ensured” otherwise. Only vehicles that are already in the immediate vicinity of the festival grounds will be accommodated. Further information on how tickets will be handled will be announced “as soon as possible” We are very sad to have to make this difficult decision – for the first time in W:O:A history.

SLAUGHTER TO PREVAIL have released their new video/single titled VIKING. The band says they are in creative mode for the new album and as they comment in their Instagram post “We tried to make it EPIC. We tried to make it HEAVY.

“Αν δεν αρέσεις στους ανθρώπους, θα πετάξουν πράγματα“, δήλωσε ο Mustaine στο SVT της Σουηδίας σε μια νέα συνέντευξη. “Ίσως να έχει περάσει από σάπιες ντομάτες σε δονητές- δεν ξέρω. Αλλά αν τους δίνεις ένα σπουδαίο σόου, δεν πρόκειται να το κάνουν αυτό – δεν πρόκειται να το κάνουν αυτό. Γι’ αυτό μην ανεβαίνεις εκεί πάνω και κάνεις σαν κακομαθημένο κωλόπαιδο και τους λες να μην πετάνε πράγματα“.

MEGADETH‘s Dave Mustaine has weighed in on the troubling behavior trends in younger audiences at live music shows, including throwing things at artists to catch their attention. “If people don’t like you, they’re gonna throw shit,” Mustaine told Sweden’s SVT in a new interview. “Maybe it’s graduated from rotten tomatoes to dildos; I don’t know. But if you’re giving them a great show, they’re not gonna do that — they’re not gonna do that. So don’t get up there acting like a spoiled fucking brat and telling them not to throw stuff.”

Several high-profile performers, including Bebe Rexha and Kelsea Ballerini, have been hit by items thrown at them while they have been performing over the summer, in some cases harming the performer in acts that could be deemed assault and may lead to criminal charges or other legal consequences for offenders.

Mustaine added: “I don’t have to worry about it. Plus my eyesight is that bad, I probably won’t see anything flying through the air until it’s too late.”

Back in 1989, MOTÖRHEAD leader Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister reportedly received a significant wound after a person who had attended the band’s concert in Yugoslavia threw a razor blade, glued between two coins, at the stage, striking the bassist/vocalist. Lemmy then showed his left fist, which was bleeding, to the audience and shouted, “What idiot thinks this is funny? If you’re so brave, come onstage and I’ll kill you, you bastard!”

Να μιλήσουμε τώρα για την ημέρα των Amon Amarth; Ξεκίνημα με μια τεράστια ουρά να περιμένει να ανοίξουν οι πόρτες, πράγμα που μπορούμε να φανταστούμε τι σημαίνει. Με το που αρχίζει να μπαίνει ο κόσμος τρέχει για το κάγκελο και μάλιστα κάποιοι με τις διαφημιστικές coca cola στο χέρι να χύνονται στη διαδρομή. Η πρώτη σκέψη είναι ότι θέλουν να πιάσουν τη θέση για τους Viking αλλά με το που ξεκίνησαν οι Σκοτσέζοι BLEED FROM WITHIN έγινε ξεκάθαρο ότι πολλοί από αυτούς που έτρεχαν ήθελαν να απολαύσουν μια από τις καλύτερες νέες μπάντες της νέας γενιάς του metalcore στην πρώτη της εμφάνιση στην Ελλάδα.

Κραυγές θαυμασμού και πάθος. Ο Scott Kennedy ομολογεί ότι δεν μπορεί να πιστέψει ότι είναι η πρώτη φορά που εμφανίζονται στην Ελλάδα και είναι εκεί ήδη ένας πυρήνας οπαδών τους, που γνωρίζει και τραγουδάει τους στίχους τους! «Μπορώ να σας υποσχεθώ ένα πράγμα, θα επιστρέψουμε». Η μπάντα έπαιξε χωρίς μπασίστα αλλά ήταν πραγματικά πολύ εντυπωσιακοί, σχεδόν καλύτεροι από την ηχογράφηση. Ακούσαμε όλα τα κομμάτια που θέλαμε από την πιο πρόσφατη δισκογραφική τους δουλειά Shrine αλλά και από το προηγούμενο Fracture. Πάθος, ενέργεια, χημεία τόσο μεταξύ τους όσο και με τον κόσμο που μέσα στον καυτό ήλιο έκανε wall of death & mosh pit!

Στο τέλος ο Scott έκανε και crowd surf  πάνω στο κοινό που τους αποθέωσε. Το μόνο σίγουρο είναι ότι κατέβηκαν από τη σκηνή με πολύ περισσότερους οπαδούς από ότι ανέβηκαν και αυτό λέει πολλά για μια μπάντα στην αρχή της.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή οι μελωδικοί death metallers HEAVEN SHALL BURN που είχαν περίπου 14 χρόνια να έρθουν στην Αθήνα αλλά στο μεσοδιάστημα δεν τους ξέχασε κανείς! Βγήκαν στη σκηνή με το Hunters Will be Hunted αλλά το κοινό φάνηκε να χρειάζεται, ή χρόνο να συνέλθει από τους νεαρούς. Παρά τον ελαφρώς βαβουριάρικο ήχο τους κατευθείαν έβαλαν το κοινό ξανα σε τροχιά pit με τραγούδια όπως τα My Heart and the Ocean, Bring the War Home, Übermacht, το Behind a Wall of Silence που ζήτησε να κάνουν ένα Wall Of Death αλλά και τον επίλογο με το Endzeit.

Οι Γερμανοί έχουν μια δισκογραφία πίσω τους και ένα ήχο που τους κάνει μοναδικούς. Με μελωδικά στοιχεία που σε κερδίζουν αλλά και στοιχεία που σου βγάζουν την έντονη Γερμανική καταγωγή. Πάνω στη σκηνή ήταν αεικίνητοι, ο Marcus Bischoff με ένα κόκκινο πουκάμισο που πρέπει να μετάνιωσε ήδη απ’ το πρώτο τραγούδι καθώς στο τέλος λούστηκε με ένα μπουκαλάκι νερό ενώ μετά το μέσο του σετ το έβγαλε εντελώς. Το κοινό τους φώναζε και κάθε φορά που τους ρωτούσε αν κουράστηκαν ανταποκρίνονταν με περισσότερη δίψα ενώ στο τέλος ο Marcus έκανε και μια βουτιά στον κόσμο, όχι πολύ πετυχημένη μιας και είχε στάξει απ’ τον ιδρώτα και από μακριά φάνηκε να τους γλίστρησε.

Και φτάνει η ώρα για τους αγαπημένους του Ελληνικού κοινού KREATOR. 90 λεπτά σετ, 90 λεπτά pit! Δεν σταμάτησαν ποτέ μόνο όταν μας μιλούσε ο Mille ο οποίος όπως είπε νιώθει την Ελλάδα το δεύτερο σπίτι του τόσο αυτός όσο και η υπόλοιπη μπάντα. Ξεκίνησαν με Hate Uber Alles και pyro show και συνέχισαν δυναμικά με Flag Of Hate! Να τονίσουμε ότι το σετ τους ήταν διαφορετικό από τα υπόλοιπα της περιοδείας με έμφαση στο να ευχαριστήσει τους old school fans. Μάλιστα στεκόμουν δίπλα σε ένα κύριο μεγαλύτερης ηλικίας που απολάμβανε το σόου με την Kreator μπλούζα του και τραβώντας βιντεάκια φορώντας τα γυαλιά πρεσβυωπίας του.

Το χαμόγελο του που φωτιζε όλο το πρόσωπο του είναι όλη η ουσία της μουσικής που υπερβαίνει το χρόνο και σε κάνει να νιώθεις το ίδιο σε όποια ηλικία και αν είσαι. Η εμφάνιση των KREATOR ήταν πραγματικά άψογη. Ο ήχος, η ένταση, η ενέργεια, η συμμετοχή του κόσμου, το σετ… όλα στο μάξιμουμ. Κολασμένο αποτέλεσμα και ένα pit χωρίς σταματημό.

Έντεκα πάρα δέκα και ανοίγει η αυλαία των AMON AMARTH για να αποκαλύψει το εντυπωσιακό σκηνικό των απόλυτων κυρίαρχων της σκηνής! Βγαίνουν στη σκηνή με καταδρομική ορμή και τα riff του Guardians Of Asgaard πλημυρίζουν την Πλατεία Νερού. Πανδαιμόνιο! Είναι η πρώτη φορά που οι AA παίζουν σε ανοιχτό φεστιβάλ επί Ελληνικού εδάφους και πρέπει να παραδεχτούμε ότι τους πάει ΤΟΟΟΟΣΟΟΟΟ πολύ! Και οι ίδιοι όμως όπως μας είπαν είχαν προσδοκίες, αλλά η λαοθάλασσα από κάτω απ’ τη σκηνή τις ξεπέρασε. Raven’s Flight και μια πολύ καλοστημένη «χορογραφία» στο φωτισμό συνοδεύει τα βαριά ριφ και τα growl του Johan. Αθήνα, Ελλάς, τόσο ο Johan που απευθύνεται στο κοινό χαμογελάει και γελάνε και τα μάτια του από τον κόσμο που τους έχει υποδεχτεί με πάθος αλλά καθώς είχαμε την ευκαιρία να τους ‘δουμε από κοντά στο photo pit όλοι τους χαμογελούσαν και απολάμβαναν κάθε στιγμή.

Πάνω στη σκηνή καθώς αλλάζαν τα σκηνικά για το Great Heathen Army εμφανίστηκαν δύο στρατιώτες, στο Deceiver Of The Gods ο Loki με τα φωτεινά πράσινα μάτια του αλλά και καθώς άρχισε να ακούγεται ο παφλασμός των κυμάτων η σκηνή έγινε ένα Viking πλοίο και ήρθε η ώρα να σπάσουμε το ρεκορ τραβώντας κουπί. Όλη η πλατεία κάθισε και άρχισε να τραβάει κουπί στο Put Your Back In The Row, Row, Row, Row.. και ο Johan μας λέει ότι είμασταν το μεγαλύτερο rowing pit. Συνέχεια με την προβλεπόμενη πρόποση με το Raise Your Horns και ολοκλήρωση με το Twillight Of The Thunder God. Έμειναν αρκετή ώρα μετά στη σκηνή χαιρετώντας τον κόσμο και μάλιστα ο Johan έβγαλε απ τις τσέπες του δυο περικάρπια με τους ρούνους της μπάντας και τα πέταξε στο κοινό. Δεν έχει υπάρξει φορά που να έχουν έρθει στην Ελλάδα και να μην τους έχω δει. Δεν με έχουν απογοητεύσει ΠΟΤΕ! Και τώρα που όλο αυτό μεταφέρθηκε σε ένα ανοιχτό φεστιβαλ πραγματικά ξεδιπλώθηκε μπροστά μας μια αδιαμφισβήτητη αλήθεια. Οι Amon Amarth είναι από τις μεγαλύτερες live μπάντες της σκηνής και εμείς τυχεροί που τους απολαύσαμε.

Από το μακρινό αυτό 2013 βέβαια έχουν γίνει κάμποσα πράγματα, έξτρα ξεκατινιάσματα, αποχωρήσεις, μηνύσεις και άλλα τέτοια καλούδια, αλλά και ακόμα 3 album, το ένα καλύτερο από το άλλο. Με αποκορύφωμα, κατά την γνώμη του υπογράφοντα πάντα, την προηγούμενη δουλειά του σχήματος, το εκπληκτικό The Verdict, το οποίο και αποτελεί το στολίδι αυτής της μορφής των QUEENSRYCHE, αυτής της αναγέννησης. Η μπάντα λοιπόν δεν έχασε χρόνο, μιας και τα πάει περίφημα, συνεχίζει στον ίδιο ρυθμό και ως αποτέλεσμα, εγένετο το Digital Noise Alliance. Θα μπορούσα να περιοριστώ στην μιάμιση παράγραφο για να περιγράψω αυτό το νέο τους δισκογραφικό βήμα και αυτό όχι γιατί είναι τόσο καλό ή τόσο κακό, αλλά επειδή είναι φοβερά ξεκάθαρο.

Το Digital Noise Alliance, δυστυχώς έτυχε να κυκλοφορήσει μετά το εκπληκτικό The Verdict όπως προανέφερα και αυτό του στερεί από μόνο του πολλά. Αυτό που θα μπορούσε να είναι η συνέχεια και η “τελειοποίηση” του προκατόχου του, ακούγεται περισσότερο σαν prequel, σαν ένα βήμα πίσω, σαν τα “δομικά υλικά” πάνω στα οποία χτίστηκε ο προκάτοχος. Είναι κακό αυτό; Για κανένα λόγο, απλά είναι παράδοξο και καθιστά τον δίσκο “θύμα” των  περιστάσεων. Η συνολική ατμόσφαιρα του album είναι πάρα πολύ καλά δομημένη, με μια περίεργη νοσταλγία και εσωστρέφεια να έχει βρει τον τρόπο να περάσει σε κάθε κομμάτι. Τα κομμάτια βρίθουν μελωδιών όπως βρίθουν χαρακτηριστικών αρμονιών και δισολιών, την ταυτότητα σε μεγάλο βαθμό δηλαδή της μπάντας. Συμαζεμένη και μετρημένη prog-α όπως μόνο αυτοί ξέρουν να κάνουν και, συγνώμη που θα το θέσω τόσο απόλυτα, τον ουσιαστικό “βασιλιά” αυτού του δίσκου, τον La Torre. Η απόδοση του όπως και οι ερμηνείες του είναι μοναδικές. Έχει μεστώσει η φωνή του, πλέον έχει βαθύνει, έχει βρει πλήρως την ταυτότητα του. Τεράστια φωνή, frontman με κάθε έννοια και ουσία. Κάτι που δεν μπορώ να πω ακόμα για τον κατά τα άλλα αξιότατο Casey Grillo, που κάνει και το δισκογραφικό του ντεμπούτο με τους Ryche, κάπως μουδιασμένος ακόμα και “διεκπεραιωτικός”.

Όλη η μπάντα αναπνέει άψογα, κινείται συνολικά, με συνοχή και κοινή πλέον πορεία, και τους πάει, πολύ. Το Digital Noise Alliance μας συστήνεται με το καλημέρα, όπως αρχίζει έτσι κλείνει κιόλας, με την ίδια υφή και ταυτότητα, δεν έχει εκπλήξεις, δεν είναι όμως και μονότονος. Σίγουρα έχει τις δυνατές του στιγμές, αδιαμφισβήτητα και τα διαμάντια του. Τα Chapters, Lost In Sorrow και Behind The Wall  να αποτελούν instant repeat, με το δεύτερο δε να είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα τους κομμάτια εδώ και 2 δεκαετίες.  Δεν θα μπορούσα να αφήσω απέξω το κομμάτι που ουσιαστικά κλείνει τον δίσκο, το Tormentum, για το οποίο θα αρκεστώ να πω πως, πολλοί κλαίνε προκειμένου να μπορέσουν ή να μπουρούσαν γενικά να γράφουν έτσι. Την διασκευή στο Rebel Yell θα μου επιτρέψετε να μην την σχολιάσω καθόλου, δεν υπάρχει λόγος, κάτι που ισχύει και για την διασκευή.

Τι λείπει λοιπόν; Μα τα μεγάλα και ανατριχιαστικά refren, οι κιθαριστικές μελωδίες που θα σου σφυνοθούν στο κεφάλι για πάντα. Το Digital Noise Alliance αποτελεί έναν καλό δίσκο, με ώριμη ατμόσφαιρα και songwriting, όχι όμως ένα σπουδαίο δίσκο. Καλά μπροστά βέβαια στον απύθμενο πάτο που είχαν φτάσει, το λες και αριστούργημα.

QUEENSRYCHE, in the last 10 years, are a great example of rebirth from one’s ashes. A great example, that all that is needed sometimes is someone to take the wheel, a “frontman” who knows what he is doing, who has an essential vision. And this has actually been noticed from the first moment Todd La Torre set foot in the band. Yes, from that self-titled restart back in 2013, it became clear that no matter how low you fall, there is a way back.

Since then, of course, a lot of things have happened, extra drama, departures, lawsuits and other goodies like that, but also 3 albums, one better than the other. With highlight, in the opinion of the one writing these lines, the previous album, the amazing The Verdict, which is the crown jewel of this form of QUEENSRYCHE, of this renaissance. So the band wasted no time, since they are doing great so far, they continue at the same pace and as a result, Digital Noise Alliance was born. I could limit myself to a paragraph and a half to describe this new record and that’s not because it’s so good or so bad, but because it’s awesomely clear as to what it is.

Digital Noise Alliance unfortunately happened to be released after the amazing The Verdict as I mentioned above and that in itself takes a lot away from it. What could be a continuation, the “perfection” of its predecessor, sounds more like a prequel, like a step back, like the “building materials” on which the predecessor was built. Is this something bad? For no reason at all, it’s just a paradox and makes the record a “victim” of circumstances. The overall atmosphere of the album is very well structured, with a strange nostalgia and introspection that has found its way into every track. The tracks are full of melodies as they are full of distinct harmonies and double lead guitars, the band’s identity to a large extent. Well controlled prog elements, as much as needed, as only they know how to do and, sorry to put it in such absolution, the essential “king” of this record, La Torre. His performance as well as his warmth are unique. His voice has softened, it has deepened in a way, he has fully found his identity. Huge voice, a frontman in every sense and essence. Something I can’t say yet about the otherwise excellent Casey Grillo behind the drums, who also makes his debut with Ryche in this record, somewhat numb and even “holding back” is the feeling I got.

The whole band breathes flawlessly, moves as a whole, with cohesion and now a common course, and they are doing great. Digital Noise Alliance introduced itself  to us from the start, as it begins, it also ends, with the same texture, feel and identity, it has no surprises, but it is not monotonous either. It certainly has its strong moments, undeniably its gems. Chapters, Lost In Sorrow and Behind The Wall are instant repeats, with the second one being one of their best tracks in 2 decades. I couldn’t leave out the track that essentially closes the album, Tormentum, for which I’ll suffice to say that many people would give everything  in order to be able to write like that. As for the cover of Rebel Yell, you will allow me not to comment on it at all, there is no reason, which also applies to the cover.

So what’s missing? But the big and great choruses, the guitar melodies that stuck in your head forever. Digital Noise Alliance is a good record, with mature atmosphere and songwriting, but not a great record. Well ahead of course of the bottom they had reached in the past, you can easily call it a masterpiece.

Ανάμεικτα τα συναισθήματα, ανάμεικτες οι αντιδράσεις στα όποια media,  καθόλου ανάμεικτη όμως η αίσθηση και η εντύπωση που μου άφησε το album από την πρώτη κιόλας ακρόαση. Οι LAMB OF GOD στο Omens δεν κάνουν καμία τρελή ανακάλυψη, δεν φέρνουν την ανατροπή στην μουσική, κοινώς δεν ανακαλύπτουν τον τροχό, δεν χρειάζεται, το έκαναν μία φορά στις αρχές τους. Ανάθεμα, δεν δοκιμάζουν καν να πειραματιστούν ξανά, όπως έκαναν στο πιο πρόσφατο παρελθόν. Επιστρέφουν σε αυτό που πάντα ήξεραν να κάνουν καλά, επανέρχονται στα γνωστά τους λημέρια. Αδάμαστο, επιθετικό μέχρι τελικής πτώσης, ρυθμικό, λυσσασμένο metal της καλύτερης ποιότητας.

Πολύ πιθανόν να μην είναι και ο πιο “εμπνευσμένος” δίσκος τους, πιθανόν να υπάρχει μια αίσθηση επαναληψιμότητας ή μανιέρας. Ανάθεμα με όμως αν καταφέρεις να κρατηθείς στατικός. Είναι απλά αδύνατο. Όσο και αν θεωρείς πως οι καλύτερες μέρες τους μουσικά και συνθετικά βρίσκονται στο παρελθόν, καλή τύχη στο να μην χαμογελάσεις στην χειρότερη στο άκουσμα του To The Grave. Εγώ σου λέω πως θα βαρέσεις το χέρι σου στο γραφείο φωνάζοντας γνωστή πολυχρησιμοποιημένη φράση αναλόγων περιστάσεων, που δεν μου “επιτρέπεται” να θέσω επί γραπτού.

Στο δε Ditch σε βλέπω να κάνεις λακούβα στο πλησιέστερο καλοριφέρ. Ξέρεις γιατί; Γιατί όσο και αν λειτουργήσει στο “ρελαντί”, δεν γίνεται να γράψει κακό riff ο Morton, από τα μούτρα θα σε πιάνει πάντα. Διάβαζα πρόσφατα φωνές διαφόρων που έλεγαν πως ο Randy και γενικά η μπάντα ίσως να μην επανήλθαν ποτέ μετά τα γεγονότα και το μπαράζ των όσων συνέβησαν τότε με την φυλάκιση του. Πως μετά δε και τις επιτυχημένες απεξαρτήσεις του, έχασε το νεύρο του, την οργή του, πως όλο αυτό τον “δάμασε” με κάποιο τρόπο. Αν λοιπόν αυτός είναι ο ήχος ενός “δαμασμένου” και “εξημερωμένου” ανθρώπου ο οποίος διανύει αισίως τον 51ο χρόνο της ζωής του τότε κάτι κάνουμε λάθος όλοι οι υπόλοιποι. Σίγουρα όλα τα παραπάνω τον άλλαξαν, σίγουρα και πολύ πιθανόν να κουράστηκε, αλλά ακούς μια τρομερή λύσσα ακόμα στην ερμηνεία του, μια πιθανόν ελεγχόμενη, σκεπτόμενη, όχι μεθυσμένη ή ανεξέλεγκτη μανία, ακούς οργή κατόπιν σκέψης, κατόπιν πάλης πρώτα με τον εαυτό σου. Γιατί Gomorrah νηφάλιος και χωρίς να πονάς δεν ερμηνεύεις έτσι. Everything is doomed to fail με όλο του το είναι φωνάζει, για εμάς που ο σβέρκος μας δεν βαστάει άλλο.

Η χειρότερη μουσική περίοδος των LAMB OF GOD είναι δισκογραφική καριέρα άλλων, ας μην γελιόμαστε. Αγάπησα τους πειραματισμούς τους στο Sturm Und Drang, αλλά μετά κάπου με έχασαν. Με χαρά ακούω πως μάλλον είχαν ανάγκη και αυτοί να μπουν στον “αυτόματο” ξανά. Και τι αυτόματος έτσι; Με το ομότιτλο να είναι το “εμπορικό” κομμάτι του δίσκου, Denial Mechanism να κάνει mosh μέσα στο σαλόνι σου και September Song να αποτελεί από τα καλύτερα κλεισίματα δίσκου που έχω ακούσει καιρό τώρα. Τι άλλο υπάρχει να πω αγαπητοί; Για παραγωγή θα μιλήσουμε τώρα και απόδοση; Σας παρακαλώ πολύ δηλάδη. Πάρτε στυλό και χαρτί και κρατάτε σημειώσεις, έτσι γίνεται φίλοι μου.

One of the most influential bands of its generation, if not of the entire “extreme” scene in my opinion, is back with a new album. Album number 9 to be precise for LAMB OF GOD who apparently did not take their time this time. The album is titled Omens and a small sample of it we had already listened to from any video clips/singles that had been published.

Mixed feelings, mixed reactions in the overall social media, but everything but mixed feeling and impressions was what the album left on me from the very first time I listened to it. LAMB OF GOD on Omens don’t make any breakthroughs, they don’t revolutionize music,or as they say they don’t reinvent the wheel, they don’t need to, they did it once in their early days. Heck, they’re not even trying to experiment again like they did in the more recent past. They return to what they always knew how to do well, they return to their familiar haunts. Untamed, aggressive until the last man standing, groovie, raging metal of the best quality.

It’s probably not their most “inspired” record either, there’s probably a sense of repeating themselves in a way . I’ll be damned if you can hold your head still though. It’s simply impossible. Even if you think their best days musically and composition wise are in the past, good luck not smiling at the worst case scenario when listening to To The Grave. I bet that you will bring your hand down  in the office shouting a well-known and often used phrase of similar circumstances, which I am not “allowed” to put in writing.

In Ditch I can literally see you making a hole in the nearest radiator or something. You know why? Because no matter how inspired he feels or not, Morton can’t write a bad riff, he’ll always get you by the neck. I’ve been reading random voices recently saying that Randy and the band in general may never have actually come back after the events and barrage of what happened back then with his incarceration. How after his successful liberation from his drug addictions, he lost his edge, his anger, how all this somehow “tamed” him. If this is the sound of a “tamed” and “domesticated” man who is happily going through the 51st year of his life, then the rest of us are definitely doing something wrong. Certainly all of the above changed him, certainly and very likely he was tired, but you hear an incredible rage still in his performance, a possibly controlled, under thinking, not drunk or uncontrollable rage, you hear rage after thought, after fighting first with thyself. Because there is no freaking way you can perform Gomorrah sober and without pain like that. “Everything is doomed to fail” he shouts with all his being, for us whose necks can’t bear it anymore.

LAMB OF GOD’s worst musical period is someone else’s recording career, let’s not be kidding ourselves. I loved their experimentation in Sturm Und Drang, but then they lost me somewhere after that. I am happy to hear that they probably also needed to get into the “autopilot” again. And what an “autopilot” indeed? With the title track being the “commercial” part of the record, Denial Mechanism making a mosh out of your living room and September Song being one of the best closing tracks I’ve heard in a while. What more is there to say? Honestly, is there any reason to talk about production and performance and stuff like that? Give me a break. Grab a pen and paper and take notes, that’s how it’s done my friends.

Σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία οι WOLFHEART χρησιμοποιούν 3 τραγουδιστές και έχουν δύο guest εμφανίσεις και οι δύο είναι εξαιρετικοί στο είδος τους. Τα φωνητικά μοιράζονται μεταξύ Tuomas, Vangelis και Lauri με τον τρόπο που εξυπηρετούν καλύτερα τα τραγούδια. Ο Karl Sanders των NILE που ανοίγει το στόμα του στο Cold Flame και ακούγεται σαν να σκεπάζει τον ήλιο με ένα καταθλιπτικό σκοτάδι και ο Jesse Leach των KILLSWITCH ENGAGE στο Ancestor είναι μια μουσική γέφυρα που ενώνει τα είδη με τέτοιο τρόπο που φέρνει κοντά δύο ακροατήρια.

Όσον αφορά τη μουσική το King of The North έχει στοιχεία από τους DAWN OF SOLACE και τους BEFORE THE DAWN μέσα του σαν ο Tuomas να φέρνει τα “παιδιά” του για να ενώσουν τις δυνάμεις τους. Μελωδίες που ξεδιπλώνονται σε μέρη πιάνου, κιθάρες που αφηγούνται ιστορίες, ενώ κρατάνε γερά τον ήχο των WOLFHEART. Νομίζω ότι η μπάντα έχει ανυψωθεί σε νέα ύψη και το King Of The North είναι το καλύτερό τους άλμπουμ μέχρι στιγμής. Αλλά είμαι επίσης σίγουρη, ότι από τη στιγμή που αυτή η μουσική ευφυΐα έχει κατακτήσει αυτόν τον στόχο, οδεύει προς τον επόμενο και μουσικά για αυτούς τους τύπους, ο ουρανός είναι το όριο. Ανοίξτε τα αυτιά σας και δυναμώστε το!

There is a Finnish word which can’t be translated in another language and ever since I heard about it, I identified it with Tuomas Saukkonen. Because it takes a man of “sisu” to be able to shift from genres, moods and influences in such a brilliant way and yet remain such a hamble easy going person. Once I listened to the new WOLFHEART King of the North out now on Napalm Records I have to say I would crown him without a second thought, as this album is the best WOLFHEART album so far and probably the most mature Saukkonen release, at least so far.

In this release WOLFHEART utilize 3 singers and have two guest appearances both of which are exceptional in their genre. Vocals are shared between Tuomas, Vangelis and Lauri in a way they best serve the songs. Karl Sanders of NILE who opens his mouth in Cold Flame and it sounds like he covers the sun in gloom darkness and Jesse Leach of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE in Ancestor is a musical bridge joining genres in such a way that he brings two audiences together.

As far as the music is concerned King of The North has elements of DAWN OF SOLACE and BEFORE THE DAWN in it like Tuomas brings in his “children” to join forces. Melodies unfolding in piano parts, guitars narrating stories while holding strong the WOLFHEART identity sound. I think that the band has elevated itself into new heights and King Of The North is their best so far. But I am also sure, that once this musical brilliance has conquered this goal, it’s heading for the next one and music wise for these guys, sky is the limit. Open your ears and turn it up!
