Το “Sympathy for the Devil” εμφανίστηκε στο τελευταίο άλμπουμ των Motorhead, Bad Magic, και παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά στο Loudwire το 2015. Τότε, ο Lemmy αποκάλυψε τον Triple H ως την κινητήρια δύναμη πίσω από τη διασκευή του τραγουδιού από το συγκρότημα. “Το σκοτώσαμε αυτό”, αντανακλούσε ο Lemmy για τη διασκευή.

Those familiar with wrestling are likely aware of Triple H’s (Paul Levesque) love of Motorhead, having used the band’s music for three entrance themes over his stories career. But the relationship between the wrestler and the band went beyond the surface fascination with Motorhead’s music. During a recent appearance on the Not Sam Wrestling Podcast, Triple H revealed that he actually had a role in Motorhead’s decision to cover two songs that both ended up being successful cover releases.

The wrestler explained that he had met with Lemmy about a proposed covers record that would be actively promoted by the WWE, and it was then that the pair got to discussing which covers the band would do.

“During that time where [Lemmy Kilmister] was really sick, I saw him in L.A. and talked to him about doing some covers,” Levesque said on the podcast.

“We sat in the back of the Staples Center and I asked, ‘What if we did this project together and we [the WWE] will promote it?’ He was really into it. We had a deal with the record label and started putting together a list of tracks.”

The wrestler revealed, “One of the tracks I mentioned was [the Rolling Stones’]’Sympathy for the Devil.’ He was like, ‘Ugh.’ He was a big Beatles guy. I was like, ‘Man, to me – that song with your voice on it, Lem – you’re the Devil.’ I talked him into it and it’s the first one he does.”

“Sympathy for the Devil” appeared on Motorhead’s final album, Bad Magic, and was premiered at Loudwire back in 2015. At the time, Lemmy revealed Triple H as the moving force behind the band covering the song. “We killed that,” reflected Lemmy of the cover.

But Triple H’s influence didn’t stop there, with the wrestler revealing he initially received some pushback before convincing Lemmy to cover David Bowie’s “Heroes.” The song appeared on Motorhead’s Under Cover album in 2017, issued after Lemmy’s death.

“I suggested it: ‘David Bowie, ‘Heroes,’ you doing that song.’ And he’s like, ‘I am not singing about dolphins!’ I was like, ‘Lem! Rewrite the lyrics! Who cares?!’”

Though Lemmy had initially balked at the idea, the cover turned out great. As Phil Campbell revealed upon the band’s release of the track, “It’s such a great Bowie song, one of his best, and I could only see great things coming out of it from us, and so it proved to be. Lemmy ended up loving our version.” Drummer Mikkey Dee added, “He was very, very proud of it not only because it turned out so well but because it was fun. Which is what projects like this should be – fun.”

The group performed it one time prior to Lemmy’s death as an encore during Germany’s Aftershock Festival in 2015.

• MOTORHEAD – Sacrifice

Αυτό το τραγούδι μιλάει για την απελπισία του πολέμου. Βέβαια οι στίχοι του τραγουδιού αναφέρονται και στην βιβλική ιστορία του Κάιν και του Άβελ, τους γιους του Αδάμ και της Εύα. Ζηλεύοντας την προτίμηση του Θεού για τον αξιόπιστο αδερφό του, ο Κάιν δολοφονεί τον Άβελ με λύσσα. Ο Θεός αντιδράει καταδικάζοντας τον Κάιν να περιπλανηθεί στη γη ως φυγάς για τις υπόλοιπες μέρες της ζωής του, βάζοντας ένα σημάδι καταδίκης στο μέτωπό του, ώστε κανείς να μην μπορεί να τον βγάλει από τη δυστυχία του. Το κομμάτι αυτό ειχε παίξει στην ταινία Tromeo and Juliet, όπου ο Lemmy ; έχει ενεργό ρόλο στην ταινία.

• METALLICA – The Four Horsemen

O Dave Mustaine έφερε αυτό το τραγούδι στους Metallica και το δούλεψε με τον James Hetfield και Lars Ulrich. Εκείνη την εποχή το ονόμασαν «The Mechanix» και το συμπεριέλαβαν στην κασέτα επίδειξης του 1982. Αφού ο Mustaine απολύθηκε από την μπάντα οι Metallica το έβγαλαν στο «Kill em All» με το όνομα «The four Horsemen» και οι Megadeth το έβγαλαν αντίστοιχα με το όνομα «The Mechanix» στο πρώτο τους άλμπουμ «Killing is my business¨»  . Τα κομμάτια έχουν διαφορετικούς στίχους αλλά η μουσική είναι σχεδόν ίδια.

Οι 4 καβαλάρηδες της Αποκάλυψης αναφέρονται στην Καινή Διαθήκη και έχουν σκοπό να διαδώσουν την είδηση για το τέλος για το τέλος του κόσμου. Βέβαια για τους Metallica θα μπορούσε να αναφέρεται ο τιτλος στα 4 μέλη του συγκροτήματος.

• DISTURBED – Liberate

To δεύτερο στούντιο άλμπουμ των Disturbed, «Believe», διερευνά το θέμα της πίστης και ενθαρρύνει τους ακροατές να επανεκτιμήσουν τις προσωπικές τους πεποιθήσεις, ειδικά τις στενόμυαλες θρησκευτικές πεποιθήσεις που προωθούν τη διαμάχη αντί για την ενότητα. Οι στίχοι παραθέτουν ένα απόσπασμα από το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο της Βίβλου για τον Ησαΐα στην Παλαιά Διαθήκη, όταν και προφητεύει μια εποχή ειρήνης τις τελευταίες ημέρες με την επιστροφή του Μεσσία. Ο David Draiman αναρωτιέται γιατί οι πιστοί περιμένουν τον σύγχρονο Μεσσία να τους αφαιρέσει όλο το μίσος που ζει μέσα τους αντί να επιλέξουν την ειρήνη τώρα. Η ιδέα αυτή βάραινε ιδιαίτερα στο μυαλό του καθώς η Αμερική μπήκε στον πόλεμο μετά τις τρομοκρατικές επιθέσεις της 11^ης Σεπτεμβρίου.

• KISS – Modern Day Delilah

Η Δαλιδά ήταν μια Φιλισταία της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης την οποία ερωτεύτηκε ο Ισραηλίτης Σαμψών. Έπεισε τον Βιβλικό ήρωα να αποκαλύψει το μυστικό της μεγάλης του δύναμης και τον πρόδωσε στους εχθρούς του. Το Delilah σε αυτό το τραγούδι είναι μια παρόμοια σημερινή femme fatale.. Οπότε ο έρωτας όταν είναι τυφλός μπορεί να γίνει και επικίνδυνος.

• WASP – Babylon’s Burning

Κατά τη διάρκεια της παγκόσμιας οικονομικής κατάρρευσης στο δεύτερο μισό του 2008, o frontman Blackie Lawless άρχισε να κάνει κάποια έρευνα του Βιβλίου της Γένεσης το οποίο οδήγησε στη δημιουργία του άλμπουμ. Εξήγησε σε μια συνέντευξή του : “Πήγα πίσω και έκανα μια λεπτομερή μελέτη του Βιβλίου της Αποκάλυψης και φρεσκάρισα τη μνήμη μου με μια αρκετά εκπληκτική ανάγνωση. Αυτή η ανάγνωση μου ενέπνευσε δυνατές εικόνες. Αρκετές ώστε να πάρω αυτές τις εικόνες του 6^ου κεφαλαίου της Αποκάλυψης και τους 4 καβαλάρηδες   και να γράψω το Babylon’s Burning.

• STRYPER – Fallen

Το ομώνυμο κομμάτι του άλμπουμ των Stryper, το Fallen,  λέει για το πώς ο Διάβολος ήταν κάποτε ο Εωσφόρος, ένας αρχάγγελος στον ουρανό, και γιατί έπεσε. “Είναι η ιστορία του πώς τον έδιωξαν από τον Παράδεισο. Προσπάθησε να ανατρέψει τον Θεό και να  αναλάβει τη θέση του”, αποκάλυψε ο τραγουδιστής Michael Sweet. “Το τραγούδι μιλάει για το πόσο όμορφος ήταν. Όταν περπατούσε, υπήρχε μουσική. Ήταν ο άγγελος της λατρείας και ένα απίστευτα δυνατό και όμορφο ον.”

• SAXON – Jericho Siren

Κατά τον Δεύτερο Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, τα βομβαρδιστικά Stuka είχαν τοποθετήσει σειρήνες για να κάνουν έναν τρομακτικό θόρυβο. Στην πραγματικότητα πρόκειται για τον βομβαρδισμό της Πολωνίας, την 1η Σεπτεμβρίου 1939.Η 3η Σεπτεμβρίου 1939 είναι στην πραγματικότητα η επίσημη ημερομηνία έναρξης του πολέμου, εκτός από τους Αμερικανούς, οι οποίοι εντάχθηκαν στη μάχη μετά τον βομβαρδισμό του Περλ Χάρμπορ στις 7 Δεκεμβρίου 1941.

Το όνομα Jericho Siren είναι φυσικά βιβλικής προέλευσης, μετά τη Μάχη της Ιεριχούς κατά την οποία τα τείχη της πόλης επρόκειτο να γκρεμιστούν μόνο από τον ήχο.

• SLAYER – CAST THE FIRST STONE

Ο κιθαρίστας των Slayer, Kerry King, πήρε την ιδέα για αυτό το τραγούδι περπατώντας στην Αθήνα, σκεπτόμενος όλες τις συγκρούσεις που έγιναν εκεί ανά τους αιώνες.

Η φράση «Να ρίξεις την πρώτη πέτρα» σημαίνει να πρωτοστατήσεις στην ανεύρεση σφαλμάτων ή κάτι παρόμοιο. Ο όρος προέρχεται από το Ευαγγέλιο του Ιωάννη, το οποίο λέει ότι ο Ιησούς επέκρινε τους Εβραίους θρησκευτικούς ηγέτες που ήθελαν να καταδικάσουν μια γυναίκα που είχε διαπράξει μοιχεία.

Regardless of one’s religious or philosophical beliefs, it is hard to deny that the Bible is hugely influential. It is hard to deny its cultural impact. This influence can be seen in different areas of art and the world of metal and rock music is no exception.

1) MOTORHEAD – Sacrifice

This song is about the desperation of war. Of course the lyrics of the song also refer to the biblical story of Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Jealous of God’s preference for his trustworthy brother, Cain murders Abel with rage. God responds by condemning Cain to wander the earth as a fugitive for the remaining days of his life, putting a mark of damnation on his forehead so that no one can put him out of his misery. This song was played in the movie Tromeo and Juliet, where Lemmy ; has an active role in the movie.

2) METALLICA – The Four Horsemen

Dave Mustaine brought this song to Metallica and worked on it with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. At the time they called it “The Mechanix” and included it on their 1982 demo tape. After Mustaine was fired from the band Metallica included it on “Kill em All” under the name “The four Horsemen” and Megadeth included it under the name “The Mechanix” on their first album “Killing is my business¨”  The songs have different lyrics but the music is almost the same.

The 4 horsemen of the apocalypse refer to the New Testament and are meant to spread the news about the end for the end of the world. Of course for Metallica the title could refer to the 4 members of the band.

3) DISTURBED – Liberate

Disturbed’s second studio album, “Believe,” explores the theme of faith and encourages listeners to reevaluate their personal beliefs, especially narrow religious beliefs that promote conflict instead of unity. The verses quote a passage from the second chapter of the Bible about Isaiah in the Old Testament, when he prophesies a time of peace in the last days with the return of the Messiah. David Draiman wonders why believers wait for the modern Messiah to remove all the hatred that lives within them instead of choosing peace now. This idea weighed heavily on his mind as America went to war after the terrorist attacks of 9/11.

4) KISS – Modern Day Delilah

Delilah was an Old Testament Philistine whom the Israelite Samson fell in love with. She convinced the Biblical hero to reveal the secret of his great power and betrayed him to his enemies. The Delilah in this song is a similar modern day femme fatale… So love when blind can be dangerous.

5) WASP – Babylon’s Burning

During the global economic collapse in the second half of 2008, frontman Blackie Lawless began to do some research of the Book of Genesis which led to the creation of this album. He explained in an interview : “I went back and did a detailed study of the Book of Revelation and refreshed my memory with a pretty amazing reading. This reading inspired powerful images in me. Enough that I took those images of Revelation chapter 6 and the 4 horsemen and wrote Babylon’s Burning.

6) STRYPER – Fallen

The title track of Stryper’s album, Fallen, tells of how Satan was once Lucifer, an archangel in heaven, and why he fell. “It’s the story of how he was kicked out of heaven. He tried to overthrow God and take his place,” revealed singer Michael Sweet. “The song talks about how beautiful he was. When he walked, there was music. He was the angel of worship and an incredibly powerful and beautiful being.”

7) SAXON – Jericho Siren

During World War II, Stuka bombers were fitted with sirens to make a terrifying noise. This was actually the bombing of Poland on September 1, 1939; September 3, 1939 is actually the official start date of the war, except for the Americans, who joined the fight after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The name Jericho Siren is of course of biblical origin, after the Battle of Jericho in which the walls of the city were to be brought down by sound alone.

8) SLAYER – CAST THE FIRST STONE

Slayer guitarist Kerry King got the idea for this song while walking around Athens, thinking about all the conflicts that have taken place there over the centuries.

The phrase “To cast the first stone” means to take the lead in finding bugs or something similar. The term comes from the Gospel of John, which says that Jesus criticized the Jewish religious leaders who wanted to condemn a woman who had committed adultery.
