Όπως λέει η άγνοια της κυβέρνησης θέτει σε κίνδυνο την επιβίωση των Βρετανών μουσικών και καλεί την κυβέρνηση να βάλει ένα τέλος στη γραφειοκρατία που πρέπει να υποστούν οι μουσικοί προκειμένου να περιοδεύσουν στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση. Μάλιστα παρουσίασε ένα πλάνο 10 σημείων που στηρίζουν και μουσικά σωματεία όπως η Musicians’ Union, UK Music και το Incorporated Society of Musicians που θα επιτρέπει στους Βρετανούς μουσικούς να περιοδεύουν στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση χωρίς να χρειάζεται να εκδίδουν visa και άδειες εργασίας. Το ίδιο και για τους Ευρωπαίους μουσικούς που θέλουν να επισκευθούν την Μεγάλη Βρετανία.

Το Φεβρουάριο, μια έρευνα του House of Commons από μουσικούς που υπέγραψαν την αίτηση για visa-free touring έδειξε ότι 81% από τους ερωτηθένετες πιθανότατα με τη νέα κατάσταση θα σταματούσαν τις περιοδείες στην Ευρώπη! Επιπλέον, το 60% είπε οτι σκέφτεται να αλλάξει επάγγελμα.

Τα θέματα που αντιμετωπίζει τώρα η Βρετανική μουσική βιομηχανία είχαν φανεί ήδη πριν την ψηφοφορία του Brexit το 2016. Η Harman περιέγραψε την αποτυχία της κυβέρνησης να προνοήσει για αυτά τα προβλήματα, πολύπλευρη. Κατηγόρησε την κυβέρνηση για άγνοια σχετικά με την οικονομική συνεισφορά της Βρετανικής μουσικής βιομηχανίας – που το 2019 εκτιμήθηκε στα 5.8 δις.λίρες Αγγλίας – αλλά και στον επιπρόσθετο μουσικό τουρισμό.

Μάλιστα πρότεινε τη δημιουργία British Music Export office και την τοποθέτηση αρμόδιου υπουργού που θα ηγηθεί και των διαπραγματεύσεων της χώρας με την ΕΕ.

Labour MP Harriet Harman says government ‘cocked up’ negotiations on touring and is ignorant of the value of music to the economy

Government ignorance of the arts is putting British musicians’ livelihoods at risk, Harriet Harman has argued, in a call for an end to the post-Brexit bureaucracy for musicians looking to tour in the EU.

The Labour MP unveils a 10-point plan of proposed measures, backed by industry bodies such as the Musicians’ Union, UK Music and the Incorporated Society of Musicians, that would allow UK musicians to tour Europe without the need for visas and work permits – and the same for EU musicians visiting the UK – after a period of what she calls “unnerving silence” on the issue from the government.

In February, a House of Commons survey of musicians who signed a petition calling for visa-free touring found that 81% of respondents said they were now likely to stop touring Europe. In addition, 60% said they were considering a change in career.

The issues now facing the UK music industry have been evident since before the Brexit vote in 2016. Harman described the government failure to address these issues as multifaceted. She accused the government of “ignorance” regarding the financial contribution of the British music industry – valued at £5.8bn in 2019 – and additionally music tourism.

Harman proposed the creation of a British Music Export office and the appointment of a minister to lead on UK-EU negotiations and coordinate support for musicians dealing with visas and other obstacles until the matter is resolved.
