Και σε αυτό το σημείο να κάνω μια μικρή παρένθεση λέγοντας ότι η παρούσα διαχείριση του Gagarin 205 κάνει εξαιρετική δουλειά ώστε να παρέχει ανθρώπινες έως πολιτισμένες συνθήκες σε όσους το τιμούν με την παρουσία τους. Το προηγούμενο live που είχα δει εκεί (προ covid) ήταν το release live των Six For Nine και θυμάμαι ότι και τότε μου είχε κάνει πολύ καλή εντύπωση ότι ο εξαερισμός δούλευε όπως έπρεπε και η ατμόσφαιρα μέσα στο χώρο ήταν πολύ ευχάριστη.

Πάμε πάλι στα μουσικά. Οι Project Renegade λοιπόν μου είχαν δημιουργήσει πολύ υψηλές προσδοκίες. Πολύ καλοφτιαγμένα βίντεο, πολύ καλές παραγωγές οπότε περίμενα μια ανάλογη live εμπειρία. Ηχητικά ήταν συμπαγής και καλοπροβαρισμένοι και οι μοντέρνες συνθέσεις τους ήταν πολύ καλές και θυμίζουν Lacuna Coil όμως η φωνή στην ζωντανή της εκδοχή χωρίς τις δεύτερες ακούγεται «άδεια». Σωστή τονικά αλλά αυτό που λέμε τσιριχτή. Ίσως θα έπρεπε να επανεξετάσουν τα κουρδίσματά τους στο live. Επιπλέον μια φιλική συμβουλή, με αγάπη είναι να επανεξετάσετε λίγο την κινησιολογία πάνω στη σκηνή γιατί κάποια πράγματα που ενδεχομένως να βγαίνουν πάνω στο «κοπάνημα» να μην δείχνουν καλά στο κοινό.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή οι On Thorns I Lay. Μοναδική doom ατμοσφαιρική μπάντα, με δύο βιολιά πάνω στη σκηνή κατευθείαν έριξαν τη μελωδική ομίχλη του πάνω στη σκηνή. Παρόλο που στα φωνητικά εμφανίστηκε μαζί τους ο τραγουδιστής των Domination INC, Θοδωρής Παπαδόπουλος, προκειμένου να μη χάσουν το live ηχητικά ακούστηκαν εξαιρετικοί. Βέβαια η κινησιολογία του Θοδωρή που είναι συνηθισμένος σε άλλο είδος τον πρόδιδε, μιας και έμοιαζε να έχουν κάνει σύμπραξη με τον Anselmo αλλά ηχητικά το αποτέλεσμα ήταν άρτιο.

Το Gagarin205 πλέον γεμάτο στο επιτρεπτό όριο και ήρθε η ώρα για τους πρωταγωνιστές της βραδιάς…. Killing moons για εισαγωγή και πραγματικά οι Nightfall διέλυσαν και την τελευταία αμφιβολία ότι πρόκειται για μια τεράστιας σημασίας επιστροφή! Ο Φώτης Benardo στα τύμπανα έχει μεταμορφώσει τον όγκο του ήχου της μπάντας, οι Γαλιάτσος και Κυριακόπουλος ήταν πραγματικά άψογοι ενώ ο Ευθύμης Καραδήμας είναι ακριβώς αυτό που πρέπει να είναι ένας frontman για μια μπάντα σα τους Nightfall. Θεατρικός, παθιασμένος στην ερμηνεία και σχεδόν χορογραφημένος στις κινήσεις του με απόλυτο έλεγχο της σκηνής και την απόλυτη χημεία με το κοινό. Το σετ μοιράστηκε στο At Night We Prey και τις παλιότερες αγαπημένες τους επιτυχίες, που παιγμένες με αυτή τη σύνθεση ακούγονται σα να είναι μια κατά πολύ βελτιωμένη εκδοχή των πρώτων κυκλοφοριών. Βλέποντας τις κάμερες που τριγύριζαν στο χώρο αλλά και την πολυκάναλη ηχογράφηση μπροστά μου (φυσικά και καθόμουν πίσω απ’τον ηχολήπτη) υποψιάζομαι ότι κάτι θα δούμε σύντομα από αυτή την υπερβατική εμφάνιση αλλά λυπάμαι για εσάς που δεν το ζήσατε από κοντά γιατί δεν θα είναι το ίδιο. Οι Nightfall ήταν τόσο συγκινητικά καλοί που στο Ishtar έγινε αυτό το μαγικό πέρασμα που μπορεί μόνο η μουσική να σου κάνει. Το κοινό παρακολουθεί μαγεμένο και οι μουσικοί απογειώνουν την ερμηνεία τους σε τέτοιο σημείο που νομίζεις ότι υπερβαίνεις τα όρια του συνειδητού και μπαίνεις σε μια μουσική έκσταση. Στο σόλο του Γαλιάτσου στην κιθάρα ακόμη και ο ηχολήπτης τους σηκώθηκε όρθιος και χειροκροτούσε. Ιδιαίτερη αναφορά θέλω να κάνω στο κορίτσι της παρέας, όχι τις αιθέριες αδερφές Βουγιουκλή που έδωσαν ένα απόκοσμο πέπλο πάνω στις ερμηνείες που μας ανατρίχιασε, αλλά τη μπασίστρια των Nightfall, Βασιλική Μπιζά που στάθηκε αντάξια των περιστάσεων! Στιβαρή και θηλυκή ταυτόχρονα, διεκδίκησε και κατοχύρωσε τη θέση της με την σκηνική της παρουσία αλλά και την μουσική της τεχνική.

Για το τέλος άφησα το beast behind the drumkit… Φώτης Benardo. Κάθε φορά που παρακολουθώ αυτό το γνήσια χαρισματικό πλάσμα να ξεδιπλώνει το ταλέντο του μένω έκθαμβη. Δεινός παίκτης αλλά με σεβασμό και ταπεινότητα απέναντι στο τραγούδι που παίζει κάθε φορά, προσεγγίζει κάθε του performance χωρίς φλυαρίες, εύστοχα και πανέξυπνα.

Το βράδυ τους Σαββάτου 13 Νοέμβρη 2021 θα μείνει στην καρδία μας… γιατί επιτέλους αρχίζει να ξαναχτυπά ο συναυλιακός παλμός μετά το κώμα που είχε πέσει και γιατί αυτή που του έκαναν το ηλεκτροσόκ για να επανέλθει στη ζωή ήταν οι Nightfall… Η μπάντα που έκανε το χρόνο… her bitch!

It’s been way too long since we last watched a big live concert in Athens and the restart of live shows couldn’t have been better! I reached Gagarin205 around 19.30 and heard Project Renegade doing their soundcheck.
After a few minutes of delay on the line we entered the venue having shown all the necessary paperwork for covid measures. The venue only had a few people in it but the promoters kept the time schedule tight.

At this point I’d like to make a special note for the administration of Gagarin 205 for the great job they are doing in order to offer civilized conditions for the fans attending the shows. The previous live I attended was the release live of Six For Nine and I remember it also made a good impression the fact the ventilation was working properly and the atmosphere in the venue was pleasant.

Back to the music… Project Renegade had grown big expectations, in my mind. Very impressive productions with great videoclips so I expected a live performance of the same level. Their sound is hard hitting, modern, and catchy, reminding the style of Lacuna Coil however the vocals in the live version, stripped from the backing vocals sound empty and at some points, squeaky. Definitely correct in its tone but annoyingly high. And one more friendly advice driven by care, reconsider the way you move on stage because some outbursts while headbanging look odd under the stage.

The next ones to take the stage were, On Thorns I Lay. Unique doom atmospheric band, with two violinists on stage they immediately put the audience in their gloomy mood.  Even though the vocals were handled by the singer of groove thrashers Domination INC, Thodoris Papadopoulos, in order to avoid canceling their appearance, the final sonic result was excellent. However, the way Theo moved onstage made obvious he comes from a much more aggressive background, as it almost looked like they were on stage with Phil Anselmo.

Gagarin205 was now in full allowed capacity and it was time for the protagonists of the show to dominate the stage… Killing moons flooded the stage and Nightfall crushed even the slightest doubt this is a return of epic proportion! Fotis Benardo on the drums has transformed the sound of the band making it vast and heavy as f@#$%!! Mike Galiatsos and Kostas Kiriakopoulos are truly magnificent while Efthimis Karadimas is exactly what a front man of a band like Nightfall ought to be. Theatrical, passionate in his performance moving as if in choreography and in perfect tune with the crowd. The set included both songs from their latest release At Night We Prey but songs from their back catalog which performed by their current line up sounded like an enhanced, remastered version of the originals. Judging by the cameras on and off stage and the multi canal recording on the FOH booth (yes, I was spying behind the sound engineer) I suspect there will be some sort of release from this astounding performance, however, I doubt it will be equally awesome as the live experience. Nightfall were movingly good, in such a way, that while the played Ishtar that transcending moment occurred that only music can create. The audience gets sucked into the performance of the band in such an extent that that you feel you go beyond the limits of reality and you dive into a musical nirvana.  Mike’s guitar solo was so good even their FOH stood up and applauded.

I want to make a special reference to the girl on stage, not the aethereal sisters Vougioukli who unfolded a misty veil that sent shivers down our spines, but the base player of Nightfall, Vasiliki Biza, who raised up to the challenge! Badass and feminine at the same time, she claimed her place and stood her ground both with her stage performance but also her aura.

Last but by no means least …the beast behind the drumkit… Fotis Benardo. Every time I witness a performance by this genuinely talented creature, I am in awe of this talent. Insanely good drummer with respect towards the song he plays each time, he approaches his performance with no nonsense, right on the spot and brilliantly.

Saturday November 13^th, 2021 will be forever in our hearts… because at last the live concert heartbeat is back on and the electric shock that revived it was Nightfall… the band that made time, its bitch!
