Καταρχάς μιας και πρόκειται για την τελευταία μέρα ενός πολυήμερου φεστιβάλ που καλύπτει όλο σχεδόν το μουσικό φάσμα να μιλήσουμε λίγο για τη διοργάνωση. Το Release Athens και η Fuzz Productions είναι μια διοργανώτρια εταιρεία που με κάνει να νιώθω ότι με σέβεται ως καταναλωτή και άνθρωπο, φροντίζει την υγιεινή του χώρου, τις συνθήκες διεξαγωγής του χώρου αλλά και το περιεχόμενο κάθε μέρας να δίνει value for money σε κάθε μέρα του φεστιβάλ. Νομίζω ότι είναι ασφαλές να πούμε ότι πρόκειται για ότι κοντινότερο έχουμε σε φεστιβάλ εξωτερικού στην Ελλάδα. Ειδικά για την ημέρα των Slipknot το μόνο κακό παρόλο που είδαμε τις επιπλέον τουαλέτες και τα επιπλέον μπαρ ήταν ότι περίπου πριν το σετ των Slipknot ξέμειναν τα μπαρ από νερό. Για την απουσία τροχαίας λόγω αδυναμίας της υπηρεσίας να ανταποκριθεί, έχουν ήδη αναρτήσει γραπτή συγνώμη στη σελίδα τους. Κατά τ’ άλλα Release Athens μακάρι όλες οι διοργανώσεις να παραδειγματιστούν από τον επαγγελματισμό και την αρτιότητά σου.

Φτάσαμε λίγο μετά τις 17.00 στην καυτή πλατεία Νερού και η ουρά ήταν ήδη μεγάλη. Δυστυχώς τους Project Renegade τους ακούγαμε απ’ έξω απ’ το χώρο του φεστιβάλ για αυτό θα προτιμήσω να μην γράψουμε κάτι για την απόδοσή τους. Μπαίνοντας στο χώρο έγινε πολύ γρήγορα η αλλαγή επι σκηνής και στην σκηνή ανεβαίνουν οι Maplerun. Οι μουσικοί εξαιρετικοί αλλά τα φωνητικά πολύ αδούλευτα. Γεγονός που φάνηκε ακόμη περισσότερο όταν διασκεύασαν το Toxicity των SOAD. Ελπίζω σε επόμενη εμφάνιση τους να μείνω με καλύτερες εντυπώσεις.

Αλλαγές στην ώρα τους και επι σκηνής η μπάντα των διαδόχων των Slipknot Vended με τον γιό του Corey Taylor στο μικρόφωνο και το γιό του Clown στα τύμπανα. Ευγενικοί και πολύ πορωμένοι παρουσίασαν τον υλικό τους μπροστά στο καψαλισμένο κοινό με πάθος. Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι με κέρδισαν ιδιαίτερα αλλά ούτε κι ότι δεν είναι καλοί, απλά μου έμοιαζαν με την πινακίδα & ΥΙΟΙ που έχουμε συνηθίσει να βλέπουμε σε διάφορες επιχειρήσεις.

Πάνω στην ώρα καθώς το πρόγραμμα τηρήθηκε στην τρίχα ανεβαίνουν στη σκηνή οι Jinjer. Πολύ μεγάλο μέρος του κοινού ήταν εκεί και για τους Ουκρανούς που εμφανίστηκαν πάνω στη σκηνή με τα χρώματα της χώρας τους μια και αυτή την περίοδο σκοπός των εμφανίσεων τους είναι η υποστήριξη της Ουκρανίας που δοκιμάζεται από τον πόλεμο. Η Τατιάνα παρόλο που έλιωνε απ’ τη ζέστη του καυτού ήλιου που ήταν ακριβώς πάνω στη σκηνή ήταν εντυπωσιακά καλή δεν έχανε το χαμόγελό της και φρόντιζε να μιλάει για τη χώρα της. Να σημειώσω δε ότι δεν έκαναν καμία αναφορά στο νέο άλμπουμ και περιορίστηκαν να ευχαριστήσουν τη χώρα μας για τη στήριξη της στην Ουκρανία. Το σετ τους ήταν γεμάτο δεξιοτεχνία, μεγάλο μέρος του κοινού όμως που ήξερε ότι στους Slipknot θα παραδώσουν πνεύμα και θα στάξουν ιδρώτα παρακολουθούσε καθιστό το σετ τους.

Ο καυτός ήλιος δύει και ένας Βραζιλιάνικος αέρας απλώνεται στη σκηνή. Είναι η ώρα των Sepultura που δυστυχώς λόγω της πρόσφατης απώλειας της συζύγου του Andreas Kisser ήταν επι σκηνής χωρίς αυτόν. Μάλιστα ο τραγουδιστής της μπάντας Derrick Green έκανε ειδική αναφορά και αφιέρωσε την βραδιά στην οικογένεια του κιθαρίστα του συγκροτήματος. Πέρα από τη συγκίνηση οι Sepultura έσπειραν τον όλεθρο πάνω στην Πλατεία Νερού. Μια ολόκληρη πλατεία να χοροπηδάει ρυθμικά με Territory, Troops Of Doom, Arise & Roots Bloody Roots. Εκπληκτικά τύμπανα και φοβερή απόδοση με το κοινό από κάτω να τα δίνει όλα. Τελικά ο Derrick είπε ότι αυτή η συναυλία ήταν η καλύτερη της περιοδείας τους.

Λίγα λεπτά μετά τις 23.00 και το πανό των Slipknot φωτίζεται. Νομίζω δεν έχει ξανακοκκινίσει ποτέ τόσο η ανυπομονησία σε συναυλία. Μπορούσες να νιώσεις την προσμονή. Όλα τα κινητά στημένα να καταγράψουν την είσοδο των maggots και όταν τελικά αποκαλύπτεται η σκηνή αρχίζει η παραφροσύνη. Για εμένα που παρακολουθούσα πρώτη φορά τη μπάντα αυτό που βίωσα με έκανε να νιώσω ότι βλέπω ένα τεράστιο συγκρότημα. Αυτό που λέμε Larger Than Life. Εξαιρετικό stage show, απίστευτη ενέργεια επι σκηνής. Αληθινή επικοινωνία με το κοινό από ένα από τους καλύτερους front men που έχω δει ποτέ (όχι δεν συμφωνώ με όσους γκρίνιαξαν ότι μιλούσε πολύ). Ο Jay Weinberg  πρέπει να χάνει περίπου 3 κιλά σε κάθε live, τόσο απόλυτα ισοπεδωτικός στα τύμπανα.

Όλοι απόλυτοι επαγγελματίες, υπερκινητικοί και με απίστευτη ενέργεια. Ο Corey ένωσε τους οπαδούς της μπάντας λέγοντας ότι είτε ακούς 23 χρόνια είναι 23 λεπτά είσαι μέλος της οικογένειάς μας. Εξέφρασε την ευγνωμοσύνη του για το κοινό και ζητούσε συνέχεια να ανάβουν τα φώτα να βλέπει το κοινό. Το pit δεν σταμάτησε ποτέ, παρουσίασαν και το νέο τους τραγούδι The Chapeltown Rag καθώς όπως είπε ο Corey δεν γίνεται να μην παίξουν κάτι από το καινούριο τους άλμπουμ στην οικογένειά τους. Υποσχέθηκε δε ότι όσο είναι ενεργοί θα φροντίζουν να επιστρέφουν στην Ελλάδα. Λίγο πριν το Spit it out μας βάζει να καθίσουμε όλοι κάτω και να πηδήξουμε πάνω μόλις μας είπε. Επικές live στιγμές και μοναδική ενέργεια “Jump the fuck up!”

Ο Corey έφυγε κουτσαίνοντας από τη σκηνή και ο Tortilla ανέβασε την επόμενη μέρα story με το πόδι του γεμάτο μελανιές μάλλον από μια ανάποδη τούμπα στον αέρα που έκανε. Αλλά κάπως έτσι είναι όταν μια μπάντα τα δίνει όλα στο κοινό της χωρίς δεύτερες σκέψεις.

Έτσι είναι (θα έπρεπε να είναι) το live!

There are concerts, there are festivals, there is the last day of Release Athens 2022 which is one of the best live experiences we have had on Greek soil.

First of all, since this is the last day of a multi-day festival that covers almost the entire musical spectrum, let’s talk a little bit about the organization. Release Athens and Fuzz Productions is an organizing company that makes me feel respected as a consumer and a human being, taking care of the hygiene of the venue, the conditions of the venue and the content of each day to give value for money on each day of the festival. I think it’s safe to say that this is the closest we have to an international festival in Greece. Especially for the Slipknot day the only bad thing despite seeing the extra toilets and extra bars was that around the time of Slipknot’s set the bars ran out of water. For the lack of traffic regulation due to the inability of the service to respond, they have already posted a written apology on their website. Otherwise, Release Athens may all events be exemplified by your professionalism and excellence.

We arrived shortly after 17.00 at the hot Water Square and the queue was already long. Unfortunately we were listening to Project Renegade from outside the festival area so I’d rather not write anything about their performance. Entering the venue the stage change happened very quickly and Maplerun took the stage. The musicians are excellent but the vocals are too harsh. A fact that became even more obvious when they covered SOAD’s Toxicity. I hope in their next performance I will be left with better impressions.

Changes on time and on stage the band of the successors of Slipknot Vended with Corey Taylor’s son on microphone and Clown’s son on drums. Polite and very porky they presented their material in front of the fired up crowd with passion. I can’t say they particularly won me over but I can’t say they weren’t good either, they just looked to me like the sign & SONS we’re used to seeing at various businesses.

Just in time as the schedule was being followed to the hilt Jinjer took the stage. A very large part of the audience was there for the Ukrainians who appeared on stage in their country’s colours since the purpose of their performances at this time is to support Ukraine which is being tested by war. Tatiana although melting from the heat of the hot sun that was right on the stage was impressively good she didn’t lose her smile and made sure to talk about her country. I should note that they made no mention of the new album and confined themselves to thanking our country for its support for Ukraine. Their set was full of virtuosity, but much of the audience who knew that Slipknot were going to deliver spirit and drip sweat watched their set sitting down.

The hot sun was setting and a Brazilian air was spreading across the stage. It’s Sepultura’s time and unfortunately due to the recent loss of Andreas Kisser’s wife, they were on stage without him. In fact, the band’s vocalist Derrick Green made a special mention and dedicated the night to the guitarist’s family. Beyond the emotion Sepultura wreaked havoc on Water Square. A whole square bouncing rhythmically with Territory, Troops Of Doom, Arise & Roots Bloody Roots. Amazing drumming and a great performance with the crowd below giving it their all. In the end Derrick said this show was the best of their tour.

A few minutes after 23.00 and the Slipknot banner lights up. I don’t think the anticipation has ever been so red hot at a concert before. You could feel the anticipation. All the mobiles set up to record the entrance of the maggots and when the stage is finally revealed the madness begins. For me watching the band for the first time what I experienced made me feel like I was watching a huge band. What we call Larger Than Life. Great stage show, incredible energy on stage. True communication with the audience from one of the best front men I’ve ever seen (no I don’t agree with those who complained that he talked too much). Jay Weinberg must lose about 3 pounds every show, so absolutely flat on the drums. All absolute professionals, hyperactive and with incredible energy. Corey united the band’s fans by saying that whether you listen 23 years or 23 minutes you are part of our family. He expressed his gratitude for the audience and asked for the lights to be turned on all the time for the audience to see. The pit never stopped, they also introduced their new song The Chapeltown Rag as Corey said they can’t not play something from their new album to their family. He also promised that as long as they are active they will make sure to come back to Greece. Just before Spit it out he makes us all sit down and jump on just told us. Epic live moments and unique energy “Jump the fuck up!”

Corey limped off the stage and Tortilla posted a story the next day with his leg covered in bruises probably from a backflip in the air he did. But that’s what it’s like when a band gives it all to their audience without second thoughts.

Ακριβώς στην ώρα τους, οι The Silent Rage βρέθηκαν στην σκηνή και άνοιξαν μουσικά την ημέρα. Περίσσεια η όρεξη τους, όπως και αυτή του κόσμου που συμμετείχε ένθερμα καθόλη την διάρκεια τους set τους υπό την καθοδήγηση και εμψύχωση του κιθαρίστα της μπάντας Νίκου Σιγλίδη. Η εμφάνιση τους  περιείχε κομμάτια από την πρώτη τους δισκογραφική δουλειά αλλά και ένα νέο κομμάτι, το “The Serpent Lord” από τον καινούργιο, ακυκλοφόρητο ακόμα, δίσκο τους. Ο ήχος δεν τους ευνόησε ιδιαίτερα, καθότι τόσο οι αναμεταξύ τους στάθμες όσο και ισορροπία στις κιθάρες είχε εμφανή θέματα. Οι ίδιοι βέβαια όπως και οι φίλοι που τους χειροκρότησαν φάνηκαν να το απολαμβάνουν ιδιαιτέρως.

Έντονο το σφυροκόπημα της ζέστης και τα παιδιά των Enemy Of Reality που ακολούθησαν στην σκηνή πρέπει να το ένιωσαν αυτό που λέμε “στο πετσί” τους. Με τον κόσμο να έχει αυξηθεί αρκετά, με μεγάλο όμως ποσοστό να αναζητεί την όποια ιδέα σκιάς μπροστά στα περίπτερα έναντι του ήλιου μπροστά από την σκηνή, Η Ηλιάνα Τσακιράκη μας καλωσόρισε υπό τις νότες του “Long Forgotten” και του “In Hiding” που ακολούθησε. Τιμώντας ως επί το πλείστον την δεύτερη δισκογραφική τους δουλεια, δεν παρέλειψαν να μας παρουσιάσουν και αυτοί νέο υλικό, δίνοντας μας μια καλή ιδέα του τι ετοιμάζουν στην καινούργια τους δουλειά. Φυσικά δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει από το set list τους η πρόσφατη και ιδιαίτερη διασκευή τους στο “Την Πατρίδα Μ’έχασα”, την οποία κυκλοφόρησαν εις μνήμην της Ποντιακής γενοκτονίας. Πλήρως επαγγελματική εμφάνιση, προσεγμένη στο έπακρο. Από ενδηματολογικής πλευράς και συνοχής μέχρι σκηνικής τοποθέτησης. Γέμισαν με ευκολία την σκηνή και κράτησαν το ενδιαφέρον και την προσοχή στην σκηνή, δείχνοντας πως γνωρίζουν πως να διαχειριστούν τόσο τον κόσμο όσο και μεγαλύτερες σκηνές. Ο ήχος βελτιωμένος, αρκετά πιο ισορροπημένος (η μία κιθάρα πολλές φορές μπορεί να αποτελεί ευλογία ως προς αυτό), επιτρέποντας τους να μεταδώσουν άρτια την ενέργεια των κομματιών και της συνολικής τους παρουσίας στο κοινό. Η μουσική και πιο θεατρική δε κατεύθυνση της μπάντας έστησε τέλεια και με τον πιο ταιριαστό τρόπο το σκηνικό για την συνέχεια.

Την Πατρίδα Μ’έχασα

Με τον ήλιο στο πικ του και είκοσι λεπτά μετά της επτά, οι Epica υπό τους ήχους του “Abyss Of Time”, μέσα από την τελευταία τους δισκογραφική δουλειά, ανέβηκαν στην σκηνή. Η υποδοχή του κόσμου, που πλέον είχε αυξηθεί κατά πολύ, ήταν κάτι παραπάνω από θερμή. Και η μπάντα βέβεια με την σειρά της, από την αρχή έκανε ιδιαίτερα αισθητή την όρεξη και την καλή της διάθεση, καθώς τα ποσοστά ενέργειας που διαχέονταν από την σκηνή ήταν αισθητά μέχρι πίσω. Η Simone Simone φάνηκε να βρίσκεται σε εξαιρετική ημέρα καθ ότι πραγματικά αψεγάδιαστη. Τρομερή απόδοση και κρυστάλλινες ερμηνείες τόσο στις πιο πρόσφατες συνθέσεις του συγκροτήματος όπως τα “The Skeleton Key” και “Essence Of Silence”, όσο και στις κλασικότερες πλέον μουσικά στιγμές τους με τα  “Cry For The Moon” και “Sancta Terra”, μην ξεχνάμε πως οι Epica μετράνε πλέον είκοσι χρόνια ζωής.

Φοβερά επικοινωνιακός και σε εξίσου άριστη απόδοση και φόρμα και ο Mark Janssen τόσο παικτικά όσο και φωνητικά. Δεν θα μπορούσαν να λείψουν φυσικά από μεριάς του τα αστειάκια για τα γεγονότα του περασμένου Σαββάτου στην εμφάνιση των Iron Maiden, καθώς όπως ο ίδιος είπε, ήμαστε τρομερό κοινό και δεν αντιλαμβάνεται τους λόγους που δεν “αρέσαμε” στον Bruce Dickinson. Πρώτο highlight της ημέρας το stage dive και crowd surf του πληκτρά του συγκροτήματος, Coen Janssen, μαζί με το περίτεχνο και περίεργο keyboard του. Αξιοσημείωτο το άναμα πυρσών προς το τέλος της εμφάνισης της μπάντας όπως επίσης και το moshpit στο “Consigh To Oblivion” το οποίο και έκλεισε το set τους. Παρότι δεν δηλώνω ο μεγαλύτερος φίλος ή γνώστης της δισκογραφίας τους, η live παρουσία τους με κέρδισε πλήρως από κάθε πλευρά. Με σύμμαχο τον τρομερό ήχο και την δική τους πολύ καλή διάθεση κέρδισαν το χειροκρότημα του κόσμου.

Με την πλατεία νερού να έχει πλέον γεμίσει από κόσμο και από τα ηχεία ξεκινάει να ακούγεται το “War Of Wrath”. Απλά ανατριχίλα. Κόσμος ξεκινάει να τρέχει από κάθε πλευρά του χώρου αφήνοντας ότι έκανε, την ουρά στα ταμεία και στα περίπτερα για να προλάβει να φτάσει μπροστά στην σκηνή. Μια σκηνή την οποία κοσμεί το εξώφυλλο του “Somewhere Far Beyond” το οποίο και είχε την τιμητική του, καθότι μετράμε αισίως τριάντα χρόνια από την κυκλοφορία του. Τι τα θες, με το “Into The Storm” σείστηκε το έδαφος. Ναι, τόσο φοβερή ήταν η “καλημέρα” των Blind Guardian επί σκηνής. Δυστυχώς, ο ήχος στέρησε το κάτι παραπάνω από την εκκίνηση, με τον Hansi Kursch να ακούγεται μετά βίας. Ευτυχώς ήταν πολύ σύντομη αυτή η αστοχία και αν εξαιρέσεις όσους από εμάς δεν κραυγάζαμε ήδη, νομίζω πως κανένας δεν το πρόσεξε τόσο ή δεν φάνηκε να ενοχλεί όλους αυτούς που με τα χέρια στον αέρα τραγουδούσαν κάθε λέξη και στίχο. Τρομερή ενέργεια, φοβερό εκτόπισμα, τρομακτική επίδοση, όλα από το πρώτο λεπτό.

Άλλη μία περίπτωση αντικατάστατου συγκροτήματος, άλλη μία περίπτωση “παλαιάς” φρουράς που φέρει το μαγικό άγγιγμα και που όταν “φύγει” δεν θα μπορέσει κανένας να καλύψει το κενό. Όχι μόνο μουσικά, αλλά και σε συνθήκες ζωντανής εμφάνισης. Αδιανόητη απόδοση, μηχανή ασταμάτητη, πηγαία όχι προσποιητή και στημένη. Άδεια, χωρίς εφέ και κορδέλες. Λιτή και ειλικρινής, μη μπορώντας όμως την χωρέσει και να την περιορίσει ακόμα και η μεγαλύτερη σκηνή. Συνοδευόμενη από κομμάτια και παραμύθια που έχουν χαράξει την θέση τους στη ιστορία πλέον. Δεν σταμάτησε κανένας να τραγουδάει, κανένας να χοροπηδάει για περισσότερη από μια ώρα. Ο Hansi Kursch προσπάθησε να μιλάει όσο το δυνατόν λιγότερο προκειμένου να μην “κλέψει” λεπτό από το setlist. Όπως είπε και ο ίδιος, είμαστε παλιοί γνώριμοι και επικοινωνούμε από καρδιάς πλέον και πραγματικά πόσο δίκιο είχε. Συχνά πυκνά φρόντιζε να μας “στολίζει” κανονικότατα για το ότι αποτελούμε σημείο αναφοράς σαν κοινό. Κι όμως, δεν γίνεται να είσαι τόσο απλός στην σκηνική σου παρουσία, τόσο “άδειος” από γνωστά τεχνάσματα και συνάμα να μην σε χωράει ο τόπος και να είναι αδύνατον να πάρεις τα μάτια σου από την σκηνή.

Παράλληλα, καταιγισμός από κομμάτια/ύμνους, “Welcome To Dying”, “Time What Is Time”, “Ashes To Ashes”, δεν γίνεται να μείνεις αμέτοχος. Στιγμή απαράμιλλης ομορφιάς, η ανάπαυλα και ο ήχος ακουστικής κιθάρας στο “The Bard’s Song”. Πρέπει να ακούστηκαν οι φωνές μας παντού. Όλη τους η εμφάνιση θα μπορούσε να είναι highlight, με πρώτο pik το προαναφερθέν κομμάτι και δεύτερο τον χαμό που επικράτησε στο “Mirror Mirror”. Βεγγαλικών συνέχεια, ήταν αναμενόμενο. Τελευταία μεγάλη στιγμή το ατελείωτο “Valhalla”, η διάρκεια του οποίου πρέπει να ήταν διπλάσια από το acapella κλείσιμο του κοινού. Μνημιώδης εμφάνιση μιας εξίσου μνημιώδης μπάντας.

Έντεκα και επτά στο ρολόι και το main event της ημέρας βγαίνει επί σκηνής μετά τα προβλεπόμενα προλογίζον ηχητικά και video. Μόνο με μπαμ, κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά θα μπορούσαν να βγουν στην σκηνή οι Sabaton, έτσι τους πρέπει, ταιριάζει και αρμόζει. Με ιδιαίτερα δυνατό εναρκτήριο κομμάτι άνοιξαν την εμφάνιση τους, το “Ghost Protocol” το οποίο συνοδεύτηκε  από εκρήξεις, φωτιές και άλλα “καλούδια”. Drumkit στημένο πάνω σε άρμα, απομεινάρια από τοίχους, πλέγματα, σκέτος πόλεμος δηλαδή.

Ότι ακριβώς θα περίμενες από τους Sabaton, στο έδωσαν από την πρώτη στιγμή. Πομπώδες, μελωδικό, πιασάρικο heavy metal συνοδευόμενο από show εφάμιλλης ποιότητας. Το κοινό φρόντισε να τους δώσει ακόμα μεγαλύτερη ανταπόδοση δύναμης με ομοβροντία. Οι πρώτες σειρές πρέπει να έδωσαν κυριολεκτικά μάχη καθώς επικράτησε ένας “μικρός” χαμός και μόνιμα μικρότερης έκτασης moshpit. Περίσσια όρεξη και από τους Sabaton που δεν λυπήθηκαν γραμμάριο ιδρώτα και ενέργειας, με συνεχόμενο headbanging. Θεατρικότητας συνέχεια, με τον frontman της μπάντας Joakim Broden ο οποίος μετά την εμφάνιση του στην σκηνή με μπαζούκα, στο “The Attack Of The Dead Men” τραγούδησε μέσα από μία αντιασφυξιογόνα μάσκα του δευτέρου παγκοσμίου πολέμου.

Τρομερή κιθαριστική δουλειά, μεγάλο ατού τόσο ο Chris Rörland όσο και ο Tommy Johansson τους οποίους προσωπικά ευχαριστήθηκα ιδιαίτερα. Εξαιρετικοί τόσο στην σκηνική τους παρουσία όσο και στο κομμάτι των solo. Προς έκπληξη, περίπου στα μισά του set τους, ο μπασίστας του συγκροτήματος Pär Sundström μας μίλησε σπαστά Ελληνικά,εκφράζοντας μας την αγάπη του για την χώρα και την προσπάθειά του να μάθει ακόμα καλύτερα την γλώσσα. Αστιευόμενος, είπε πως η υπόλοιπη μπάντα δεν έχει ιδέα του τι μας λέει, κάτι που προκάλεσε γέλια καθώς και το χειροκρότημα του κοινού. Σταδιακά ο κόσμος λιγόστευε, καθώς τόσο η περασμένη ώρα και ο περιορισμός της ως προς τα μέσα μαζικής μεταφοράς αλλά και το γεγονός ότι τη επομένη ήταν εργάσιμη ημέρα, ανάγκασε αρκετούς να αποχωρήσουν πριν το τέλος του set.

Οι Sabaton καθόλη την διάρκεια τους στην σκηνή, έδωσαν ένα εντυπωσιακό show, με καταιγισμό εκρήξεων και βεγγαλικών κάτι που ανταποδώθηκε από την σχεδόν συνεχόμενη παρουσιά πυρσών από μεριάς κόσμου. Τίμησαν μεγάλο μέρος της δισκογραφίας τους, με “Steel Commanders”,“Carolus Rex”, “Sparta” να κάνουν την διαφορά, ενώ υπό τους ήχους του “Primo Victoria” πυρσοί έκανα την εμφάνιση τους μέχρι και στο μέρος των vip. Σκηνικό άξιο αναφοράς για κλείσιμο, με το κοινό να κάθεται κάτω και να τραβάει κουπί, στο “Swedish Pagans”.  Οι Sabaton έκαναν μια αξοπρεπέστατη εμφάνιση και ένα πολύ δυνατό show αποδεικνύοντας την εμπορικότητα που την συντροφεύει τα τελευταία χρόνια. Για να είμαι ειλικρινής βέβαια, δεν θα με ενοχλούσε καθόλου η αντιστροφή θέσης στην κορυφή, αλλά περί ορέξεως λένε…

 Eleventh day for this year’s Release Athens Festival, which shook the venue both with its diversity as well with the explosive performances of all the bands.

Thursday was again a hot day and the little breeze that was blowing was a blessing for those who patiently waited for the doors to open outside the live area. The doors actually opened at the listed time, if not earlier, and I was happy to find out that people were heading to the stage right from the start. It’s sad to see the opening bands performing their material under the hot sun in an “empty” environment, which happens most of the time unfortunately, but not in this case.

Right on schedule, The Silent Rage hit the stage and opened the day musically. They were in a great mood, as was that of the crowd who enthusiastically participated throughout their set under the guidance and call of the band’s guitarist Nikos Siglidis. Their performance included tracks from their first record as well as a new track, “The Serpent Lord” from their new, as yet unreleased, album. The sound did not favor them that much, as both the levels between them and the balance of the guitars had obvious issues. Of course, they, as well as the friends who applauded them, seemed to enjoy their performance very much.

The heat was intense and the guys and lady from Enemy Of Reality who followed on stage must have felt it for real. With the crowd number being increased quite a bit, but with a large percentage of it looking for any possible amount of ​​shade around the area instead of going in front of the stage, Iliana Tsakiraki welcomed us under the notes of “Long Forgotten” and “In Hiding” that followed . Mostly playing material from their second record, they also present us new material as well, giving us a good idea of ​​what they are up to in their new work. Of course, their recent and special cover of “Την Πατρίδα Μ’έχασα“, which they released in memory of the Pontic genocide, could not have been left out or be missing from their set list. Totally professional band, down to the detail. From the clothing aspect to the on stage consistency. They easily filled the stage and kept the interest and attention on stage, showing that they know how to handle both the crowd and bigger stages. The sound was improved, much more balanced (the one guitar can often be a blessing in this matter), allowing them to perfectly convey the energy of the tracks and their overall presence to the audience. The musical and more theatrical direction of the band set the scene perfectly and in the most appropriate way for what was coming next.

With the sun at its peak and twenty minutes past seven, Epica took to the stage to the sounds of “Abyss Of Time”, from their latest album. The reception from the crowd, now greatly increased, was more than warm. And the band, in turn, made their good mood particularly noticeable from the beginning, as the amount of energy that spread from the stage was noticeable all the way back. Simone Simone was having a great day as her voice sounded flawless. Tremendous and crystal-clear performance in both the band’s most recent compositions such as “The Skeleton Key” and “Essence Of Silence”, as well as in their most classic moments with “Cry For The Moon” and “Sancta Terra”. Let’s not forget that Epica is now twenty years old.

Greatly communicative and equally excellent in his performance and form, both playing and vocally was Mark Janssen . Of course, jokes about the events of last Saturday at Iron Maiden’s performance could not be missing from his side, since as he said, we were a great audience and he doesn’t understand the reasons why Bruce Dickinson didn’t “liked” us. The first highlight of the day was the stage dive and crowd surf of the band’s keyboard player, Coen Janssen, along with his elaborate and strange keyboard. The lighting of torches towards the end of the band’s performance is noteworthy, as well as the moshpit that stated in “Consigh To Oblivion” which closed their set. Although I don’t claim to be their biggest fan or the band and their discography, their live presence completely won me over from every aspect of it. Together with their incredible sound and their own very good mood, they won the crowd’s applause.

With the venue now filled with people, “War Of Wrath” starts playing from the speakers. Just goosebumps all over. People start running from every side of the venue, leaving what they were doing, the waiting line at the cash registers and booths in order to get to the front of the stage. A scene adorned by the cover of “Somewhere Far Beyond” which had its honorable special anniversary , since we are counting thirty years since its release. With “Into The Storm” that came after, the ground shook. Yes, that’s how awesome Blind Guardian’s “hello” was on stage. Unfortunately, the sound stole some of that awesomeness at the start, with Hansi Kursch barely heardable. Luckily this mishap was very brief and if you exclude those of us who weren’t already screaming, I don’t think anyone from those that were singing every word and verse with their hands in the air really noticed or seemed to mind. Amazing  energy, awesome stage placement, breathtaking  performance, all from the first minute.

Another case of an irreplaceable band, another case of the “old” guard that carries the magic touch and that no one will be able to fill the void when they are gone. Not only musically, but also in live performance conditions. Unthinkable performance, an unstoppable machine, sinsear not an act, from within the heart. Without the aid of effects and lights. Simple and honest, unable to be contained even on the biggest stage. Accompanied by songs and tales that have carved their place in history by now. No one stopped singing, no one stopped jumping for more than an hour. Hansi Kursch tried to speak as little as possible in order not to “steal” a minute from the setlist. As he himself said, we are old acquaintances and communicate from the heart by now and indeed, how right he was. He often made sure to “adorn” us for being a point of reference as an audience. And yet, it is not possible to be so simple in your stage presence, so “empty” of well-known tricks and at the same time, the place can not fit you and making  it impossible to take your eyes off the stage.

At the same time, a storm of songs/anthems followed, “Welcome To Dying”, “Time What Is Time”, “Ashes To Ashes”, you can’t remain neutral to what is taking place. A moment of incomparable beauty, the calm before another storm, the sound of acoustic guitar in “The Bard’s Song”. Our voices must have been heard everywhere. Their entire performance could be a highlight, with the aforementioned track being the first peak along with the war that took place in “Mirror Mirror” as the second one. Flares were lit again,as  it was expected. Last big moment of the set  was the endless “Valhalla”, the duration of which must have been twice as long as the original,  as the acapella chorus that was sung by the audience at the end must have lasted forever. Monumental performance by an equally monumental band.

Seven minutes past Eleven on the clock and the main event of the day comes on stage after the scheduled audio and video prologues. Only with a bang, literally and figuratively, could Sabaton take the stage, so it should, fits and suits  them. They opened their performance with a particularly strong opening track, “Ghost Protocol”, which was accompanied by explosions, fires and other “goodies”. Drumkit set up upon a tank, remnants of walls, grids, pure war scenery.

Exactly what you would expect from Sabaton, that’s what you get from the first moment. Big, melodic, catchy heavy metal accompanied by a show of unparalleled quality. The audience made sure to answer that and gave them even more power back. The first rows must have literally fought as a “small” war and smaller moshpits  were taking place here and there all the time. Sabaton spared not a single drop of sweat and energy, hammering the stage with continuous headbanging. Theatrics continued, with the band’s frontman Joakim Broden who, after appearing on stage with a bazooka, in “The Attack Of The Dead Men” sang through a World War II gas mask.

Tremendous guitar work, credits to both Chris Rörland and Tommy Johansson whom I personally enjoyed big time. Excellent, both of them, both in their stage presence and in the guitar solos part. To our surprise, about halfway through the set, the band’s bassist Pär Sundström spoke in Greek to us, expressing his love for the country and his effort to learn the language even better. Jokingly, he said that the rest of the band had no idea what he was telling us, which was answered by laughter as well as applause from the audience. Gradually the crowd was getting smaller, as the limitations of public transport at such late hours  and the fact that the next day was a working day, forced several to leave before the end of the set.

Throughout their time on stage, Sabaton gave an impressive show, with a barrage of explosions and fire shows, something that was matched and answered by the crowd with the continuous presence of torches and flares. They honored a large part of their discography, with “Steel Commanders”, “Carolus Rex”, “Sparta” gaining the fans applause, while under the sounds of “Primo Victoria” torches made their appearance even in the VIP area. Noteworthy,at the show’s end, the audience at the front rows sat down and started pulling the “oars” under the sound of  “Swedish Pagans”. Sabaton made a decent appearance in a very strong show, proving the commercialism that accompanies them in recent years. To be honest of course, I wouldn’t be bothered at all by the reversal of position at the top, but that’s just little old me…

Κατηφορίζοντας στην πλατεία Νερού το απόγευμα της Τετάρτης 22 Ιουλίου λοιπόν ο πήχης ήταν πολύ ψηλά. Έφτασα στο χώρο με καθυστέρηση και δεν πρόλαβα ολόκληρο το σετ των Meden Agan ωστόσο από ότι πληροφορήθηκα αυτό που πρόλαβα και άκουσα ήταν αντιπροσωπευτικό της εμφάνισης τους, που ήταν καλός ήχος και πολύ καλή εμφάνιση για τη μπάντα. Ακριβώς αυτό που πρέπει να κάνει μια μπάντα όταν της δίνεται μια ευκαιρία να βρεθεί μπροστά στο κοινό ενώς τόσο μεγάλου φεστιβάλ όσο το Release Athens.

Επόμενοι στη σκηνή με ένα χρονοβόρο θεωρώ changeover οι Rhapsody Of Fire. «Πουλέν» των Manowar μιας και είναι και στην δισκογραφική του συγκροτήματος εμφανιστηκαν μπροστά στο διψασμένο για γρήγορο epic metal κοινό ορεξάτοι. Με σετ που ικανοποίησε τους οπαδούς ακόμη και αν καψαλίζονταν ακόμη απ τον ήλιο και αρκετά καλό ήχο στο μεγαλύτερο μέρος του σετ (κάποια στιγμή αντιμετώπισαν ένα πρόβλημα και έκανα μια μικρή διακοπή) ήταν μια ευχάριστη επική προθέρμανση.

Στις 20.30 όπως είχε ανακοινωθεί στο πρόγραμμα από τη διοργανώτρια εταιρεία, οι θρυλικοί Rotting Christ ανεβαίνουν στη σκηνή. Πάρα πολύ μεγάλο μέρος του κοινού με μπλούζες Rotting Christ, καμία ωστόσο στο merchandise. Εντυπωσιακή απουσία η αλήθεια είναι το merch των Christ. Με το που ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή το κοινό τους αποθεώνει. Με πάρα πολύ καλό ήχο η ιστορική μπάντα ανεβαίνει στη σκηνή και ξεσηκώνει. «Τρια χρόνια είναι πάρα πολλά ….» Σετ με κλασσικές και αγαπημένες στιγμές του συγκροτήματος, καπονογόνα να συνοδεύουν τα πολύ αγαπημένα και ένα συναίσθημα χαράς να ξεχειλίζει στην πλατεία νερού που ξαναβρέθηκε μπάντα και κοινό να ανταλλάξουν ενέργειες και «1, 2, 3 … Societas Satanas». Κορυφαία στιγμή το King Of A Stellar War που δονήθηκε και ο τελευταίος σβέρκος στην πολατεία Νερού!  Βλέποντας την ταλαιπωρία ζωγραφισμένη στο πρόσοπω του Θέμη ωστόσο από πολύ νωρίς στο σετ προβληματίστηκα, η ζέστη ή το κενό αυτών των 3 χρόνων άφησε το στίγμα του. Ο Σάκης ευχαριστεί το κοινό και τους Manowar και δίνει ραντεβού για την επόμενη φορά.

Όπως περιμέναμε από το πρόγραμμα οι Manowar ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή μετά από ένα πολύ μεγάλο κενό στις 23.00.  Μια τεράστια οθόνη πίσω τους, ένας ήχος ογκόλιθος, ο μεγαλύτερος που έχει γίνει σε φεστιβαλ όπως μας είπε ο De Mayo και η μπάντα ετοιμοπόλεμη. Eric Adams στα 70 του να κάνει το κοινό να παραμιλά με την ικανότητά του. Στην αρχή μου φάνηκε οτι από το 2019 στο 2022 είχε μια σχετική φθορά αλλά καθώς περνούσε η ώρα με διέψευσε πανηγυρικά. Και ας μη γελιόμαστε σε αυτές τις ηλικίες τα 3 χρόνια μετράνε διαφορετικά. Το μπάσο του De Mayo απ’ ότι μας πληροφόρησαν ακουγόταν μέχρι και στο Βύρωνα ενω δεν πρέπει να έχω ακούσει ποτέ χειρότερο ήχο σε κιθάρα. Σα να του είπαν πριν το live «Επειδη ήσουν κακό παιδί θα στο βγάλουμε την παραμόρφωση απ’ την κιθάρα».

Φυσικά η μπάντα αξιοποίησε την ευκαιρία να παρουσιάσει υλικό από την επερχόμενη κυκλοφορία της και για την εξυπηρέτηση του σκοπού αυτού ανέβασε επί σκηνής τον Κωνσταντίνο Καζάκο ντύμενο Τηλέμαχο με αφήγηση playback (αλήθεια γιατί; ) και λίγο πιο πριν τον James Cosmo. Βέβαια η αλήθεια είναι οτι τα προηχογραφημένα ήταν αρκετά ενώ η αλήθεια είναι οτι ο Joe είχε όρεξη για κουβέντα… Μας εξήγησε το concept του νέου άλμπουμ, πήρε την ευκαιρία να μας πει πόσο θαυμάζει τον Ελληνικό πολιτισμό αλλά και να απαντήσει για τον «πολεμο ανακοινώσεων» που είχε προηγηθεί τις προηγούμενες μέρες σχετικά με την εμφάνισή τους στο Barcelona Rock Fest. Φυσικά δεν έλειψαν και τα σόλο του μπάσου που έκοψε μια, μια τις χορδές και τις έδωσε στο κοινό. Το set περιείχε το λατρεμένο Defender αλλα σε εκείνο το σημείο θεωρώ οτι τα υποτονικά τραγούδια ήταν πολλά και απονεύρωσαν την ενέργεια της εμφάνισής τους. Το σετ λιστ είχε επετειακές επιλογές από λιγότερο αγαπημένα άλμπουμ με αποτέλεσμα να μην έχει την ίδια καταιγιστική ενέργεια του 2019. Τελική αποτιμήση ουσιαστικά #ΜΟΝΟERICADAMS.

I was there in 2019 because it was announced that it was the last Manowar concert and for historical reasons only I was there. For historical reasons, because I’m not a Manowarior, because I often mock their aesthetics, and because my musical tastes are different. At the time I was blown away by the unreal Eric Adams and the pulse of the very tight and powerful setlist they had prepared.

Descending to Release Athens on the afternoon of Wednesday 22 July, the bar was set very high. I arrived at the venue late and didn’t catch Meden Agan’s entire set however from what I was informed what I caught and heard was representative of their performance, which was good sound and a very good performance for the band. Exactly what a band should do when given a chance to be in front of the audience at a festival as big as Release Athens.

Next on stage with what I consider a time-consuming changeover were Rhapsody Of Fire. “Proteges” of Manowar since they are also on the band’s label they appeared in front of the thirsty for fast epic metal audience. With a set that satisfied the fans even if they were still burning from the sun and a pretty good sound for most of the set (at one point they encountered a problem and took a short break) it was a pleasant epic warm up.

At 8.30pm as announced in the time schedule by the promoter, the legendary Rotting Christ took to the stage. Many of  the fans wore  Rotting Christ shirts, none however were sold on the merchandise stand. An impressive absence to tell you the truth for Rotting Christ’s merch. As soon as they took to the stage the crowd cheered them on. With a very, very good sound the historic band takes the stage and gets the crowd going. “Three years is too long ….” said Sakis. Set of classic and favorite moments of the band, accompanying the much loved ones and a feeling of joy overflowing in the venue where the band and the audience were again found exchanging energies and “1, 2, 3 … Societas Satanas”. Best moment of the show, was King Of A Stellar War which vibrated even the last neck in the Water Square!  Seeing the suffering painted on Themis’ face however very early in the set I was puzzled, the heat or the void of those 3 years left its mark. Sakis thanks the audience and Manowar and makes an appointment for next time.

As we expected from the programme Manowar took the stage after a very long gap at 23.00.  A huge screen behind them, a wall of  sound, the biggest ever at a festival as De Mayo told us and the band ready to go. Eric Adams in his 70s making the audience gasp with his ability. At first it seemed to me that from 2019 to 2022 he had a certain amount of wear and tear but as time went on he proved me solemnly wrong. And let’s not kid ourselves at these ages 3 years counts differently. De Mayo’s bass from what we were informed could be heard as far away as Vironas, while I must have never heard a worse sound on a guitar. It was as if he was told before the gig “Because you’ve been a bad boy we’re going to take the distortion out of your guitar”. Of course the band took the opportunity to present material from their upcoming release and to serve this purpose they brought on stage Konstantinos Kazakos dressed as Telemachus with playback narration (really why? ) and James Cosmo a bit before. Of course the truth is that the pre-recorded material was enough and the truth is that Joe was in the mood for a chat… He explained the concept of the new album, took the opportunity to tell us how much he admires the Greek culture and also to answer for the “announcement war” that had preceded the previous days regarding their appearance at Barcelona Rock Fest. Of course, there was no lack of bass solos as he cut the strings one by one and gave them to the audience. The set included the beloved Defender but at that point I think the down tempo songs were too much and drained the energy of their performance. The set list had anniversary selections from lesser loved albums so it lacked the same thunderous energy of 2019. Final score was essentially #ERICADAMSRULEZ.

Με καταγωγή από το Ντονέτσκ και έδρα το Κίεβο, οι Ουκρανοί Jinjer είναι μια από τις πιο καυτές και πιο επιτυχημένες  μπάντες του σύγχρονου metal, με πάνω από 250 εκατομμύρια streams και ασταμάτητες περιοδείες σε κάθε γωνιά του κόσμου. Από το ξεκίνημά τους, το 2010, και μέχρι σήμερα έχουν κυκλοφορήσει τέσσερα studio albums που γνώρισαν τεράστια επιτυχία και αποθεώθηκαν από σύσσωμο το μουσικό τύπο.

Προερχόμενοι από μια χώρα χωρίς ιδιαίτερη παράδοση στον σκληρό ήχο, έκαναν από την αρχή τα πράγματα με τον δικό τους τρόπο, πολλές φορές ξεπερνώντας τους συμβατικούς κανόνες του heavy metal, με σημείο αναφοράς τη φωνή και την παρουσία της εξαιρετικής τραγουδίστριας Tatiana Shmayluk. Η στάση τους γίνεται σαφής στο πολυσυζητημένο τελευταίο τους άλμπουμ, “Wallflowers” (2021). Ο δίσκος δεν είναι απλά ένα πολύ προσεκτικά μελετημένο επόμενο βήμα για το συγκρότημα, αφού πάνω απ’ όλα μοιάζει ως το ιδανικό soundtrack των τελευταίων ετών και των όσων ζήσαμε την περίοδο της πανδημίας.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως οι Jinjer είχαν αρχικά λάβει την απόφαση να σταματήσουν την περιοδεία τους, λόγω των γεγονότων στην πατρίδα τους.  Έχοντας πλέον λάβει ειδική άδεια από το Υπουργείο Πολιτισμού της Ουκρανίας, συνεχίζουν τις εμφανίσεις τους θέλοντας να ευαισθητοποιήσουν το κόσμο ώστε σύντομα να σταματήσει ο πόλεμος. Τους υποδεχόμαστε με χαρά σε αυτή την τελευταία ημέρα του Release Athens 2022, τόσο διότι μοιραζόμαστε μαζί τους αυτή την ελπίδα όσο και γιατί αποτελούν μία από τις πλέον ανερχόμενες και συναρπαστικές heavy metal μπάντες της εποχής μας.

Οι Vended σχηματίστηκαν τον Φεβρουάριο του 2018, στο Des Moines της Iowa, και αποτελούνται από τους Cole Espeland (κιθάρα), Griffin Taylor (φωνή), Simon Crahan (drums), Jeremiah Pugh (μπάσο) και Connor Grodzicki (κιθάρα). Κι αν κάτι σας θυμίζει η καταγωγή του γκρουπ, αυτό συμβαίνει γιατί δύο από τα μέλη των Vended, o τραγουδιστής και ο ντράμερ, είναι , αντίστοιχα, οι γιοι των Corey Taylor και Shawn “Clown” Crahan των αξεπέραστων Slipknot.

Μεγαλωμένοι, στην κυριολεξία, μέσα στο metal, οι Vended δεν κρύβουν πως θέλουν να κατακτήσουν τον κόσμο και σε κανέναν δεν θα έκανε εντύπωση αν τα κατάφερναν. Με την ακρίβεια και την ταχύτητα του rhythm section, τις άγριες κιθάρες και τα γεμάτα ειλικρίνεια φωνητικά, μοιάζουν ικανοί να τα καταφέρουν. Μετά από δύο χρόνια σκληρής δουλειάς, οι Vended έδωσαν την πρώτη τους sold out συναυλία τον Μάρτιο του 2020 και μετά την αναγκαστική διακοπή, ελέω Covid-19, επέστρεψαν πιο δυνατοί και πεινασμένοι από ποτέ.
Ελάτε από νωρίς για να δείτε και εσείς από κοντά πως μοιάζει η νέα γενιά του metal. Αυτή είναι μόνο η αρχή.

Οι Maplerun δημιουργήθηκαν το 2007, στην Αθήνα. Το alternative metal κουαρτέτο με τις πολυσυλλεκτικές επιρροές (Metallica, Porcupine Tree, System of a Down, Radiohead, Tool κτλ.) έχει κυκλοφορήσει τρεις δίσκους και έχει συμμετάσχει σε μεγάλα φεστιβάλ πλάι σε σπουδαία ονόματα όπως Judas Priest, Monster Magnet, Rotting Christ, Shadow Gallery, Skindred κ.α.

Οι Project Renegade είναι ένα metal συγκρότημα από την Αθήνα, το οποίο δημιουργήθηκε από τους Marianna (φωνή) και Ody (drums) και συμπληρώθηκε στη συνέχεια με τους Philipp (κιθάρα) και Jay (μπάσο). Έχουν συμμετάσχει σε πολυάριθμα φεστιβάλ του εξωτερικού και της Ελλάδας και έχουν μοιραστεί τη σκηνή με ονόματα όπως Evanescence, Bullet For My Valentine, Harakiri for the Sky, Mayan και Beyond the Black μεταξύ άλλων.
