The Other Side Of Mars ονόμασε αυτή του την δισκογραφική προσπάθεια, ένας τίτλος που νομίζω ότι του ταιριάζει πολύ μιας και παρουσιάζει μια όντως διαφορετική μουσική πλευρά κιθαρίστα, μία που θα τολμήσω να πω ότι του ταιριάζει πολύ. Αρκετά πιο σημερινή, αρκετά πιο μοντέρνα και με καθαρά αμερικάνικη χροιά και στα 10 κομμάτια του δίσκου. Χαμηλοκουρδισμένα riff, αρκετό τσαμπουκά και μαγκιά, groove και έξυπνα βαλμένα refren από θέμα φωνητικών γραμμών, συνταγή δηλαδή δοκιμασμένη με εγγυημένα αποτελέσματα.Εννοείτε πως δεν θα μπορούσε να λείπει η ανάλογη δόση υποβόσκουσας rock n roll-ιας, για τον Mick Mars μιλάμε. 

Συνθετικά το album δεν κερδίζει σε πρωτοτυπία, αλλά έχει ότι χρειάζεται για να κερδίσει στα σημεία που έχουν σημασία και να κάνει την επανακρόαση σίγουρη και ευχάριστη. Χωρισμένα  μεταξύ σε δυνατές και πιο μπαλαντοειδές στιγμές με καλή ισορροπία τα κομμάτια του The Other Side of Mars δείχνουν έναν μουσικό που έχει ακόμα αρκετά πράγματα να πει, πιθανόν να τα κρατούσε για καιρό καθώς δεν ταιριάζουν με τίποτα στο είδος που μέχρι πρότινος εκπροσωπούσε και αποδεικνύουν πιθανόν σε μεγάλο βαθμό το ποσοστό συμμετοχής και σημασίας του Mick Mars (καλά ήταν ανέκαθεν αδιαπραγμάτευτο) στην μουσική πορεία των MOTLEY CRUE. Μεγάλο ατού βέβαια αποτελεί και η συμμετοχή του Jacob Bunton στην φωνή,τον είχαμε συναντήσει στα πρώτα 2 προσωπικά album και του Gus G και που μπορώ να πω πως οι δύο αυτές κυκλοφορίες ταιριάζουν αρκετά σε σημεία. Τόσο η χροιά του όσο και οι μελωδικές γραμμές της φωνής προσθέτουν άπειρα στο όλο εγχείρημα.  

Γενικά σε προσωπικό επίπεδο το ευχαριστήθηκα αρκετά το The Other Side Of Mars. Κομμάτια όπως τα Loyal To The Lie, Broken On The Inside, Alone, Killing Breed και Undone θα επανέλθουν στο άμεσο μέλλον στο playlist μου με μεγάλη ευκολία και άνεση. Μπράβο στον γερόλυκο που εξακολουθεί να το θέλει, να το μπορεί, να το παλεύει και να αποδίδει στο τέλος με αξιοπρέπεια. Ξεκίνα το επόμενο μάστορα μου!

Probably with the best way Mick Mars got to the nose of his former MOTLEY CRUE bandmates, as their legal disputes are still going on. Despite his health problems, which also led him to retire from playing with the aforementioned gentlemen, instead of taking advantage of the time in a relaxed manner, he chose to release his first solo work.

The Other Side Of Mars is what he called this effort, a title that I think suits him very well as it presents a truly different musical side of the guitarist, one that I would dare say suits him very well. A lot more modern, a lot more todays sound and with a distinctly American tone in all 10 tracks of the album.Low tuned riffs, a lot of character and bravado, groove and cleverly put choruses in terms of vocal lines, a recipe that is a tried and tested one with guaranteed results. Of course the rock n roll flavor could not be missing as expected, after all it’s for Mick Mars we are talking about. 

Compositionally the album doesn’t win in originality, but it has what it takes to win in the points that matter and make the re-listening a sure thing  and a pleasant one also. Divided between strong and more in the ballad side moments with good balance, the tracks on The Other Side of Mars show a musician who still has a lot to say, probably holding on to them for a long time as they don’t fit in with anything in the genre he previously represented and probably prove to a large extent Mick Mars’ involvement and importance (well it has always been non-negotiable) in MOTLEY CRUE‘s musical career. A big trump card of course is the participation of Jacob Bunton on vocals,we had met him in the first 2 personal albums and Gus G and I can say that these two releases fit together quite well in parts. Both his tone and the melodic lines of his voice add infinitely to the whole project.  

Overall I personally enjoyed The Other Side Of Mars. Tracks like Loyal To The Lie, Broken On The Inside, Alone, Killing Breed and Undone will be coming back to my playlist in the near future with great ease. Kudos to the old guy for still wanting it, being able to do it, fighting it and delivering in the end with dignity. Start the next one dude!
