On September 6th Wolfheart are releasing “Draconian Darkness” on Reigning Phoenix Music and we had the chance to talk with Tuomas Saukkonen about it. Tuomas explains the entire creative process, the signing in their new label, their upcoming touring plans and how the new album is about the way modern man treats the world over the last century. He reveals which song was the most demanding for him and he also shares insights on the band’s balance of “glow”. You’ll know when you see it!

Περίπου στις εννέα και μισή οι DESERT NEAR THE END ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή. Λίγο στριμωγμένοι καθώς υπήρχαν δύο σετ ντραμς στη σκηνή του μικρού χώρου, ωστόσο αυτό δεν τους εμπόδισε να δώσουν ένα σπουδαίο show μπροστά σε ένα κατάμεστο An Club. Έπαιξαν τραγούδια από ολόκληρο τον κατάλογό τους αλλά κράτησαν ένα ολοκαίνουργιο τραγούδι για το τέλος το οποίο έγινε πολύ θερμά δεκτό από το κοινό. Έχουν πολύ χαρακτηριστικό ήχο και αποδίδουν κάθε φορά.

Μετά από μια πολύ σύντομη αλλαγή οι WOLFHEART ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή. Έχω δει την μπάντα, πέρυσι, ξανά στην Ελλάδα, και πρέπει να πω ότι ο χρόνος που έχουν περάσει μαζί περιοδεύοντας είναι εμφανής στο όλο αποτέλεσμα. Μην με παρεξηγήσετε, και πέρυσι ήταν υπέροχοι αλλά τώρα η ροή και το δέσιμο μεταξύ τους είναι απίστευτο. Παρόλο που έπαιξαν με τον ντράμερ των SWALLOW THE SUN, Juuso Raatikainen, καθώς ο ντράμερ της μπάντας, Joonas Kauppinen, αναρρώνει ακόμα, ο τρόπος με τον οποίο οι Vageliss, Tuomas και Lauri είχαν απόλυτη επίγνωση των συμπαικτών τους ανά πάσα στιγμή ήταν σαγηνευτικός, σαν να μπορούσαν να παίξουν με κλειστά μάτια.

Το setlist περιλάμβανε αγαπημένα κομμάτια από όλες τις εποχές της δισκογραφίας του συγκροτήματος. Θα ήθελα να κάνω ειδική μνεία στον Βαγγέλη, ο οποίος άδραξε την ευκαιρία, λίγο πριν παρουσιάσει το The King να μας μιλήσει στα ελληνικά και να μας πει ότι είναι ευγνώμων που είναι σε αυτό το συγκρότημα και για την ευκαιρία που του δόθηκε να πάρει καλλιτεχνικά ρίσκα όπως το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι.

Ο κόσμος ήταν πολύ θερμός απέναντι στο συγκρότημα. Ήξεραν όλα τα τραγούδια και ο ήχος τους ήταν τόσο συμπαγής που έκανε τα θεμέλια του χώρου να τρέμουν. Παίζουν με πάθος, συναίσθημα και ακραία δύναμη. Είναι ένας μοναδικός συνδυασμός όταν μπορούν να είναι επιθετικοί αλλά και εύθραυστοι στο ίδιο τραγούδι, καθώς το γεμάτο δύναμη drumming υποστηρίζει μια μαγευτική μελαγχολική μελωδία. Αν δεν είχατε την ευκαιρία να τους δείτε ζωντανά, χάνετε και αν ήσασταν εκεί την Κυριακή, σίγουρα ξέρετε για τι πράγμα μιλάω. Αυτοί έκαναν το βράδυ της Κυριακής, να μοιάζει με Σάββατο. Μέχρι την επόμενη φορά Wolves…

So, Jesus called Tuomas Saukkonen before WOLFHEART’s show in Athens and said, “Tuomas, not cool having a show on a Sunday” and Tuomas answered, “Well we have Vageliss in the band” and then Jesus said “Oh well, then it’s ok”. This is more or less the joke Tuomas made just before saying goodnight and playing the last song of a great live appearance in AN Club in Athens. But let’s take it from the top….

Just about half past nine DESERT NEAR THE END hit the stage. A little crammed as there were two sets of drums on the small venue stage however that didn’t stop them from giving a great show in front of a packed venue. They played songs from their entire catalog but kept a brand new song for last which was very warmly welcomed by the crowd. They have a very distinctive sound and they deliver every single time.

After a very brief change up WOLFHEART came on stage. I have seen the band last year again in Greece and I have to say that the time they’ve spent together on the road is obvious in the whole result. Don’t get me wrong, last year they were great but now the flow and bonding between them is incredible. Even though they played with SWALLOW THE SUN’s drummer Juuso Raatikainen as the band’s drummer Joonas Kauppinen is still recovering, the way Vageliss, Tuomas and Lauri were totally aware of their bandmates at all times was captivating, as if they could perform with their eyes closed. The setlist included favorites from all the eras of the band’s catalog. I’d like to make a special mention to Vageliss, who took up the opportunity, just before introducing The King to talk to us in Greek and say that he is grateful for being in this band and for the opportunity he has been given to take up artistic challenges such as the particular song.

The crowd was very warm towards the band. They knew all the songs and their sound was so massive they made the foundation of the venue shake. They play with passion, feeling and extreme force. It is a unique combination when they can be aggressive but fragile at the same song as the full force drumming supports an enchanting melancholic melody. If you haven’t had a chance to see them live, you are missing out and if you were there in Sunday, you definitely know what I am talking about. They made Sunday night, feel like a Saturday. Melodic Death Metal Masters WOLFHEART starting their 1st headliner tour in Europe and unleash Official Live Video for “The Hammer”. WOLFHEART has unveiled a perfect example of their raw live energy in a form of a live recording from the 2023 Summerbreeze.

Spring and summer 2023 has taken the nordic pact through North-America and European festival madness and the grand finale of this victorious run was the mighty Summerbreeze. To continue the tradition of releasing videos from SB performance (Aeon of Cold, Boneyard) the northern warriors are thrilled to present highest professional level live of the song “The Hammer” right before the beginning of the first headliner tour in Europe.

Το νέο τους single, το οποίο φέρει τον τίτλο Iku-Turso συνεχίζει τόσο το μουσικό όσο και το θεματολογικό χαρακτήρα της τελευταίας τους δουλειάς. Σχετικά με το κομμάτι, ο ιθύνων νους του συγκροτήματος Tuomas Saukkonen ανέφερε τα εξής:

“Φαίνεται ότι σε κάθε concept άλμπουμ που φτιάχνουμε υπάρχει μια ιστορία που μένει πίσω και αξίζει μια συνέχεια του θέματος. Το προηγούμενο μας άλμπουμ “King Of The North” επικεντρώθηκε πλήρως στη φινλανδική μυθολογία και κάναμε διεξοδική δουλειά καλύπτοντας τα πάντα, από τη δημιουργία του σκανδιναβικού βασιλείου μέχρι τους ημίθεους της φινλανδικής φύσης. Αλλά ένα πραγματικά αρχέγονο και κακόβουλο πλάσμα, το θαλάσσιο τέρας που ονομάζεται Iku-Turso, έμεινε πίσω και τώρα επιστρέφουμε για να αφηγηθούμε την ιστορία για το κυνήγι αυτού του τέρατος που πίστευαν ότι ήταν επίσης ο θεός του πολέμου”.

Always creative and productive, the Finnish melodic death metallers WOLFHEART, released a new single in video form while touring for their latest, highly successful album “King Of The North”.

The new single, which is titled Iku-Turso, continues both the musical and thematic character of their latest work. About the track, the band’s mastermind Tuomas Saukkonen said the following:

“Seems like with each concept album we make there is one story that is left behind and deserves a sequel to the theme. Our previous full length “King Of The North” was fully focused on Finnish Mythology and we did thorough job covering everything between creation of the Nordic realm to the demigods of Finnish nature. But one truly primeval and malevolent creature, sea monster called Iku-Turso was left behind and now we are back to tell the story about a hunt of this beast that was also believed to be the god of war”

Σαββατόβραδο 10 Δεκέμβρη και φτάνουμε στο Temple 20.30 που οι πόρτες έχουν ανοίξει στην ώρα τους και η ουρά προχωράει γρήγορα. Ακριβώς στις 21.30 όπως είχε ανακοινωθεί σε ένα σχετικά γεμάτο Temple ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή οι Among Ruins. Ετοιμοπόλεμοι, καλοκουρδισμένοι και καταιγιστικοί ζεσταίνουν το κοινό που δεν τους αντιμετωπίζει σαν opening act αλλά φαίνεται εξοικειωμένο με το υλικό τους, συμμετέχει δυναμικά και παθιασμένα. Μάλιστα όπως μας είπε ο Σωτήρης το Wells of War θα είναι το επόμενο βίντεο του συγκροτήματος και «θα τραβήξει και εσάς εδώ ο camera man» χωρίς να αναφέρει βέβαια ότι ο camera man ήταν ο Tuomas Saukkonen (!).

Από την πρώτη φορά που είδα τους Amon Ruins live με εντυπωσίασε ο ογκόλιθος του ήχου τους, οι φωνητικές επιδόσεις του Σωτήρη αλλά και οι συνθέσεις που γράφουν. Έξτρα kudos στον ντράμερ ο οποίος πραγματικά κόντεψε να διαλύσει το drum set και πραγματικά περιμένουμε με ανυπομονησία την επόμενη σας κίνηση Among Ruins.

Με μια μικρή καθυστέρηση από την ώρα που είχαν ανακοινώσει ανεβαίνουν στη σκηνή οι Kings Of The North… Wolfheart. Παραδέχομαι ότι είναι από τα συγκροτήματα που με έκαναν να μετανιώνω που τους είδα πρώτη φορά το Σάββατο. Τεράστιοι σε όγκο και ήχο, σε απόλυτη αρμονία μεταξύ τους, με τεράστια τύμπανα, με κιθάρες στιβαρές και συγχρονισμένες και με μια παρουσία … ναι θα το πω αρχοντική. Οι Wolfheart είναι ένα συγκρότημα με βαθιά πίστη στην ποιότητα της μουσικής τους, αποδίδουν άψογα το υλικό τους επι σκηνής και κερδίζουν το κοινό επειδή μπορούν και αναμοχλεύουν το μέσα σου. Φτάνουν στις σκοτεινές γωνίες της ψυχής σου και τους δίνουν φωνή.

Μιλώντας για φωνή μου κάνει ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση που ο Tuomas δεν έβγαλε κουβέντα όσον αφορά την επικοινωνία με το κοινό, αλλά ταιριάζει και στο συνεσταλμένο χαρακτήρα του. Όλο αυτό το είχε αναλάβει ο μπασίστας του συγκροτήματος Lauri. Ούτε καν ο Βαγγέλης που θα μπορούσε να μας μιλήσει και Ελληνικά. Αλλά να πούμε κάτι για τον γίγαντα Καρζή; Είναι εξαιρετικός στη θέση του στους Wolfheart! Απόλυτος επαγγελματίας, ένα βήμα πίσω από τον Tuomas, πάντα υποστηρικτικός, εξαιρετικός στην κιθάρα και πολύ καλός στα δικά του μέρη στο μικρόφωνο μιας και πλέον τραγουδούν και οι τρεις τους πράγμα που απολαύσαμε στο Knell.  Βέβαια, δεν υπήρχε περίπτωση να μη δώσει το σύνθημα για πιτ πράγμα το οποίο έκανε και το κοινό ακολούθησε παθιασμένα.

Τέλος δεν θα μπορούσαμε να μην κλείσουμε με τον Tuomas Saukkonen που κερδίζει την εκτίμηση μου για την απλότητα και ταπεινότητα του χαρακτήρα, τη μουσική ιδιοφυία αλλά και τον τρόπο με τον οποίο απολαμβάνει τη μουσική επι σκηνής. Μπορούσες να τον δεις ότι αφήνεται απόλυτα στη μουσική να τον παρασύρει στον δικό της κόσμο και βγάζει την ψυχή του και την καταθέτει στο κοινό.

Στο Ancestor ανέβηκε στη σκηνή μαζί τους η Ruby Bouzioti στη θέση του Jesse Leach των Killswitch Engage. Ένα παράπονο έχω μόνο και δεν είμαι η μόνη αγαπητοί Wolfheart … To Cold Flame που έλειπε από το setlist. Θα μου πεις, ποιος να σταθεί στη θέση του Karl Sanders; Aλλά λυπηθείτε και εμάς που θέλουμε να το ακούσουμε live!

Κλείνοντας θα συμπληρώσω μόνο ότι το βράδυ του Σαββάτου παρακολούθησα μια από τις καλύτερες συναυλίες της χρονιάς και ευχαριστώ Among Ruins & Wolfheart.

From the first time I heard King Of The North I was looking forward to enjoy it live and both from Tuomas‘ words in our most recent interview and the fact that Vagelis Karzis is now a permanent member of the band I was just waiting for the announcement of the date and finally it came! I booked the tickets with the announcement and I was especially happy to see that Among Ruins were supporting the night because they are very close musically to Wolfheart but this also meant that the band is rebounding.

Saturday night December 10th and we arrive at Temple at 8.30pm the doors have opened on time and the queue is moving fast. At exactly 9.30pm as announced to a relatively full Temple Among Ruins took to the stage. Ready to go, well-tuned and thunderous they warmed up the crowd who didn’t treat them as an opening act but seemed familiar with their material, participating energetically and passionately. In fact as Sotiris told us Wells of War will be the next video of the band and “the camera man will shoot you here too” without mentioning of course that the camera man was Tuomas Saukkonen (!).

From the first time I saw Amon Ruins live I was impressed by the mass of their sound, the vocal performance of Sotiris and the compositions they write. Extra kudos to the drummer who really almost broke up the drum set and really looking forward to your next Among Ruins move.

With a slight delay from the time they had announced, Kings Of The North… Wolfheart take the stage. I admit that they are one of the bands that made me regret seeing them for the first time on Saturday. I ought to have seen them before! Huge in volume and sound, in perfect harmony with each other, with huge drums, with guitars solid and in sync and with a presence … yes I’ll say it, stately. Wolfheart is a band with a deep confidence in the quality of their music, they deliver their material flawlessly on stage and win over audiences because they can and do stir your insides. They reach into the dark corners of your soul and give them a voice.

Speaking of voice, I’m particularly impressed that Tuomas didn’t say a word in terms of communicating with the audience, but it also fits his modest character. All of this was handled by the band’s bassist Lauri. Not even Vangelis who could have spoken Greek to us. But can we say something about the giant Karzis? He is excellent in his role in Wolfheart! Absolute professional, one step behind Tuomas, always supportive, excellent on guitar and very good in his own parts on the vocals since now all three of them sing which we enjoyed in Knell.  Of course, there was no way he wouldn’t give the pit cue which he did and the audience followed passionately.

Finally we couldn’t close without mentioning Tuomas Saukkonen who wins my appreciation for his simplicity and humility of character, musical genius and the way he enjoys music on stage. You could see that he completely lets the music draw him into its own world and he brings out his soul and lays it out for the audience.

In Ancestor, Ruby Bouzioti took the stage with them in place of Jesse Leach of Killswitch Engage. I only have one complaint and I’m not the only one dear Wolfheart … To Cold Flame was missing from the setlist. You can tell me, who can stand in Karl Sanders’ place? But show mercy for us who want to hear it live!

In closing I will only add that Saturday night I attended one of the best concerts of the year and thanks to Among Ruins & Wolfheart.

Wolfheart have released the best album in their discography so far so even though it hasn’t been long since we last talked with Tuomas Saukkonen, we had to talk about the masterpiece entitled “King Of The North” out now on Napalm Records.

Σε αυτή την κυκλοφορία οι WOLFHEART χρησιμοποιούν 3 τραγουδιστές και έχουν δύο guest εμφανίσεις και οι δύο είναι εξαιρετικοί στο είδος τους. Τα φωνητικά μοιράζονται μεταξύ Tuomas, Vangelis και Lauri με τον τρόπο που εξυπηρετούν καλύτερα τα τραγούδια. Ο Karl Sanders των NILE που ανοίγει το στόμα του στο Cold Flame και ακούγεται σαν να σκεπάζει τον ήλιο με ένα καταθλιπτικό σκοτάδι και ο Jesse Leach των KILLSWITCH ENGAGE στο Ancestor είναι μια μουσική γέφυρα που ενώνει τα είδη με τέτοιο τρόπο που φέρνει κοντά δύο ακροατήρια.

Όσον αφορά τη μουσική το King of The North έχει στοιχεία από τους DAWN OF SOLACE και τους BEFORE THE DAWN μέσα του σαν ο Tuomas να φέρνει τα “παιδιά” του για να ενώσουν τις δυνάμεις τους. Μελωδίες που ξεδιπλώνονται σε μέρη πιάνου, κιθάρες που αφηγούνται ιστορίες, ενώ κρατάνε γερά τον ήχο των WOLFHEART. Νομίζω ότι η μπάντα έχει ανυψωθεί σε νέα ύψη και το King Of The North είναι το καλύτερό τους άλμπουμ μέχρι στιγμής. Αλλά είμαι επίσης σίγουρη, ότι από τη στιγμή που αυτή η μουσική ευφυΐα έχει κατακτήσει αυτόν τον στόχο, οδεύει προς τον επόμενο και μουσικά για αυτούς τους τύπους, ο ουρανός είναι το όριο. Ανοίξτε τα αυτιά σας και δυναμώστε το!

There is a Finnish word which can’t be translated in another language and ever since I heard about it, I identified it with Tuomas Saukkonen. Because it takes a man of “sisu” to be able to shift from genres, moods and influences in such a brilliant way and yet remain such a hamble easy going person. Once I listened to the new WOLFHEART King of the North out now on Napalm Records I have to say I would crown him without a second thought, as this album is the best WOLFHEART album so far and probably the most mature Saukkonen release, at least so far.

In this release WOLFHEART utilize 3 singers and have two guest appearances both of which are exceptional in their genre. Vocals are shared between Tuomas, Vangelis and Lauri in a way they best serve the songs. Karl Sanders of NILE who opens his mouth in Cold Flame and it sounds like he covers the sun in gloom darkness and Jesse Leach of KILLSWITCH ENGAGE in Ancestor is a musical bridge joining genres in such a way that he brings two audiences together.

As far as the music is concerned King of The North has elements of DAWN OF SOLACE and BEFORE THE DAWN in it like Tuomas brings in his “children” to join forces. Melodies unfolding in piano parts, guitars narrating stories while holding strong the WOLFHEART identity sound. I think that the band has elevated itself into new heights and King Of The North is their best so far. But I am also sure, that once this musical brilliance has conquered this goal, it’s heading for the next one and music wise for these guys, sky is the limit. Open your ears and turn it up!

    On January 24th 2020, more than a decade after its predecessor “The Darkness”, Finnish death and gothic doom metal icon Tuomas Saukkonen returned with “Waves”, his sophomore solo-album under the flag of DAWN OF SOLACE. Grey, heavy and dark, but still sorrow carrying certain beauty and strength – the long-awaited record turned out to be an honest picture of the current times for its writer and delivered exactly that kind of atmosphere everyone had hoped for.

    Already while recording the album it was clear that DAWN OF SOLACE was brought back to life and this time without the passing of another 14 years! To be released on November 12th via Noble Demon, “Flames of Perdition” picks up where DAWN OF SOLACE left off with “Waves”, creating a world full of electrifying melancholy that evokes profound sadness. Like life itself, the darkness of DAWN OF SOLACE has evolved and made a few steps towards the void. This time with an extra amount of solitude that we all have gotten to know during the past 1,5 years.

    “‘White Noise’ was the first song that I wrote for ‘Flames Of Perdition’ and it was like floodgates were opened and rest of the album just followed like a dark stream. ‘White Noise’ carries and reflects the mood of the entire album and gives a meaning to terms melancholic, sombre and heavy and the lyrical concept of solitude and loneliness has been given a stronger meaning during the past 1,5 years.” Tuomas Saukkonen states.

Athenian southern thrashers Black Stone Machine announced the release of an upcoming EP in September.

As stated by the band the EP entitles “One With The Horde” will feature an acoustic version of their song Bounty Hunter as well as two new songs with two special guests, Babis Papanikolaou of Planet Of Zeus and Vageliss Karzis of Full House Brew Crew & Wolfheart

Όπως αναφέρουν στην ανακοίνωσή τους «Με βαριά καρδιά αναγκαζόμαστε να ακυρώσουμε την headline εμφάνισή μας στο Gugulan Rock στις 14 Αυγούστου. Ο drummer μας Joonas χρειάστηκε να υποβληθεί σε επείγουσα εγχείρηση στην πλάτη μόλις χθες και θα χρειαστεί αρκετές εβδομάδες αποθεραπείας. Ευχόμαστε να μπορέσουμε να παίξουμε για τους Ρουμάνους fans μας το συντομότερο δυνατό, και φυσικά ευχόμαστε στον αδερφό μας στη μάχη μια γρήγορη ανάρρωση.

Finnish death metal band Wolfheart cancels it’s upcoming appearance in Gugulan Fest due to health issue of its drummer.

The band writes on Facebook “With heavy hearts we are forced to cancel Gugulan Rock Headline show 14th of August. Our drummer Joonas had to go through an emergency back operation just yesterday and will need several weeks to recover. We wish to be able to perform to our Romanian fans as soon as possible and also hope for smooth recovery to our brother in arms. “

Athenian southern thrashers Black Stone Machine have recorded a song with Vageliss Karzis (Full House BC, Wolfheart, ex Rotting Christ) as a guest.

As the band posted on its social media they are currently recording a new EP and Vageliss will be one of the two guests in a song dedicated to Lemmy as Vageliss explains in his own social media account. Below are the pics from the recording.

Σήμερα, ο συνθέτης, multi-instrumentalist και παραγωγός ανακοίνωσε την κυκλοφορία του “Flames of Perdition“, του τρίτου στούντιο άλμπουμ του DAWN OF SOLACE, που κυκλοφόρησε στις 12 Νοεμβρίου μέσω της γερμανικής δισκογραφικής Noble Demon.

On January 24th 2020, more than a decade after its predecessor “The Darkness”, Finnish death and gothic doom metal icon Tuomas Saukkonen returned with “Waves”, his sophomore solo-album under the flag of DAWN OF SOLACE. Praised by fans and critics alike as one of the best albums of the year, the release and the band’s resurrection raised high hopes that it won’t be another 14 long years until a new full-length is out. Today, the composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer announced the release of “Flames of Perdition”, the third studio album by DAWN OF SOLACE, out on November 12th via German label Noble Demon.

“Past year has dug a hole in the soul when all touring was stopped and the whole music business suddenly stood still” Tuomas Saukkonen states. “As a proper Fin you either dig yourself out of it or aim deeper. Never stand still! I did not and wrote a new Dawn Of Solace album inspired by that void and loss.”

With an ongoing busy schedule and a complete focus on Wolfheart (except for the release of “Waves” by Dawn of Solace, the long awaited 2nd album after 14years), out of nothing the world and its live shows got turned upside down in the the year of 2020, which became the perfect opportunity for Saukkonen to take a trip on the memory lane and to reach out to old friends and to do something special and unexpected. As emails turned into studio days, Before the Dawn suddenly wrote a brand new song, with the original line-up from 2007, and announced the re-release of their most successful album and timeless masterpiece, “Deadlight”, on July 9th via Finnish label Stay Heavy Records.

“Definitely one of the best things of 2020 was joining forces with my old friends and brothers in arms Lars and Juho, the line-up behind BTD Deadlight album that saw the light of the day 2007. Years have gone by but the same magic is still there” Tuomas Saukkonen comments.

Encompassing all of the elements the band is known for, Before the Dawn‘s first single in 9 long years is once again a track full of memorability, ambition and top-notch musicianship, and one that will most likely make every fan’s heart beat faster.

The video for the acoustic version of Aeon Of Cold was just uploaded by Wolfheart.

The acoustic version of the song is included in the band’s Ep Skull Soldiers which was recently released through napalm Records. In this particular version the band’s bass player Lauri Silvonen takes the vocal duties and as Tuomas Saukkonen told us in his interview the upcoming album will also include vocals by the band’s guitarist Vangelis Karzis.

We asked Tuomas to talk about Wolfheart, the music they are writing for their next release, handling the pandemic and the no touring era but also what inspires him to write music.
