Δεν θα ήθελα να ξοδέψω χρόνο και χώρο από το κείμενο και κατ επέκταση από τον αναγνώστη για τα απολύτως βασικά και απαραίτητα. Αυτά είχα ξανά την χαρά να τα αναφέρω στην προακρόαση του Nuances Of Life μερικούς μήνες πριν. Εδώ θα μείνω στο ζουμί που λένε του θέματος.
Το δεύτερο album των THE SILENT RAGE θα μπορούσες να το πεις και reboot γιατί πραγματικά κάπως έτσι λειτουργεί. Αφήνει πίσω πιθανές ατέλειες και αστοχίες της πρώτης τους δισκογραφικής δουλειάς και φαίνεται να μας παρουσιάζει μια εικόνα απόλυτα στοχευμένη, σκεπτόμενη και με γνώση του τι θέλει αλλά και τι ξέρει να κάνει καλύτερα η μπάντα. Το τωρινό line up δείχνει να προσφέρει τα δέοντα και να επισφραγίζει όλες τις προδιαγραφές που είχαν οι THE SILENT RAGE με τον πιο σωστό τρόπο.
Νομίζω πως αυτό που χαρακτηρίζει περισσότερο από οτιδήποτε το Nuances Of Life είναι τα riff. Αυτός είναι ο ακρογωνιαίος λίθος του δίσκου, στιβαρά, πορωτικά μέχρι τελικής πτώσης, καθαρά heavy/power κιθαριστικά riff. Σαν αυτά που αγαπήσαμε σε παλαιότερες εποχές αλλά και σε πιο πρόσφατες κυκλοφορίες αγαπημένων συγκροτημάτων. Με το δικό μου αυτί να ακούει και να αντιλαμβάνεται χρώματα από τους δικούς μας FIREWIND, τις τελευταίες (αν όχι την τελευταία) δουλειές των ICED EARTH, έντονη σκιά από JUDAS PRIEST μετά 90s εποχής, αλλά και τιμημένες αναφορές σε γνωστές επιρροές των μελών της μπάντας, όπως αυτή των BRAINSTORM.
Όλο το παραπάνω έρχεται για να τονώσει το πολύ σφιχτό ρυθμικό δίδυμο του μπάσου/τυμπάνων που κρατάει πραγματικά χαρακτήρα. Τόσο όσο, όσο πρέπει, όσο ταιριάζει, όσο χρειάζεται και ότι ζητάει το ύφος του κάθε κομματιού. Χωρίς να κάνουν εκπτώσεις φυσικά τεχνικά ή σε ατομική παρουσία. Το κομμάτι της φωνής είναι συνεχώς μπροστά, λίγο η χροιά από μόνη της, λίγο οι ακροβασίες συνήθως στις γέφυρες των κομματιών, λίγο ο πομπώδες χαρακτήρας και η ροή των γραμμών, καθιστούν την φωνή κυρίαρχο χαρτί της μπάντας. Θέλω να σταθώ λίγο σε αυτό το κομμάτι, καθώς η αγάπη που τρέφω για την μπάντα και μέλη της μου υπαγορεύει να είμαι πάντα ειλικρινής μαζί τους. Παρόλο που τα κομμάτια τα ίδια συνθετικά παρουσιάζουν έντονες διαφορές μεταξύ τους, η συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των μελωδικών γραμμών, παρουσιάζουν μια στατικότητα και έντονη επαναληψιμότητα ως επί το πλείστων στα κουπλέ. Ενώ σχεδόν όλα τα ρεφρέν έχουν ξεχωριστό και έντονο μελωδικό χαρακτήρα, που σου μένει, τα κουπλέ τείνουν να ηχούν σαν κάτι ενιαίο και μονοδιάστατο. Και προσοχή, αναφέρομαι αποκλειστικά και μόνο στο μελωδικό κομμάτι και όχι στο κομμάτι της απόδοσης/επίδοσης και της φωνής του Μιχάλη Ρινακάκη. Αυτά δεν χωρούν αμφισβήτησης.
Συνθετικά τώρα, έχουμε πολύ ψωμί. Στο μεγαλύτερο ποσοστό του ο δίσκος κρατάει επιθετική τάση με mid προς up tempo ταχύτητες, με εξαίρεση την μπαλάντα Black Monday, ενός κομματιού στην μνήμη των θυμάτων της πυρκαγιάς στο Μάτι Αττικής, με την συμμετοχή του Bob Katsionis. Φυσικά και ξεχωρίζουν τα Another Fallen Kingdom και Scarlet Dawn στα οποία και βλέπουμε τους Stu Block και Harry Conklin να χτυπιούνται κυριολεκτικά με τον Μιχάλη, αλλά προσωπικά από την πρώτη κιόλας ακρόαση με κέρδισαν τα Carve Your Rage, Crows Fly Back και Exhaling Fear, που μαζί με το The Serpent Lord και Man In The Mirror θεωρώ πως κερδίζουν στα σημεία τα υπόλοιπα κομμάτια του δίσκου.
Ασυζητητή τεράστιο άλμα για το συγκρότημα, ασυζητητή πολύ δυνατή κυκλοφορία σε ένα είδος που επιστρέφει δυνατά και γίνεται όλο και πιο ανταγωνιστικό. Ασυζητητή επαγγελματικότατη κυκλοφορία σε όλα τα σημεία, εξώφυλλο (Remedy Art Design), παραγωγή (Fotis Benardo) και παρουσίαση. Μπράβο σε όλα, μπράβο σε όλους, μπράβο και λίγο παραπάνω από εμένα στον Νίκο.

I wouldn’t want to spend time and space from the review and therefore from the reader on the absolute basics and essentials. These I had the pleasure of mentioning again at the Nuances Of Life listening session a few months ago. Here I’ll stick to the matter itself.
THE SILENT RAGE‘s second album could be called a reboot because that’s really how it works. It leaves behind possible flaws and failures of their first album and seems to present us with an image that is completely focused, thoughtful and with knowledge of what they want and what they know how to do better. The current line up seems to deliver the goods and to seal all the standards that THE SILENT RAGE had all along, in the most appropriate way.
I think what characterizes Nuances Of Life more than anything is the riffs. That’s the cornerstone of the album, solid,to the point, downright heavy/power guitar riffs. Like the ones we loved in earlier times but also in more recent releases of our favorite bands. With my ear hearing and perceiving from our own FIREWIND, the latest (if not the last) ICED EARTH works, strong shades of post 90s era JUDAS PRIEST, but also honorable references to known influences of the band members, such as that of BRAINSTORM.
All of the above comes to accentuate the very tight rhythmic bass/drums duo that really holds character. As much as, as much as it fits, as much as it’s needed and as much as the style of each track calls for. No discounts of course technically or in individual presence. The vocal part is constantly up front, a little bit of the timbre itself, a little bit of the acrobatics usually in the bridges of the tracks, a little bit of the pompous character and the flow of the lines, make the voice the dominant card of the band. I want to dwell a bit on this part, as the love I have for the band and its members dictates that I should always be honest with them. Although the tracks themselves compositionally show strong differences between each other, the vast majority of the melodic lines show a static and strong repetitiveness for the most part in the verse areas. While almost all of the choruses have a distinct and strong melodic character that stays with you, the verses tend to sound like something unchanged and one-dimensional. And be careful, I’m referring defiantly and only to the melodic part and not to the performance and vocal part of Michalis Rinakakis. These are unquestionable.
In the composition matter now, we have a lot going on. For the most part the album keeps an aggressive tendency with mid to up tempo speeds, with the exception of the only ballad, Black Monday, a track in memory of the victims of the fire in Mati Athens, with the guest appearance of Bob Katsionis. Of course, Another Fallen Kingdom and Scarlet Dawn stand out as well, in which we see Stu Block and Harry Conklin literally exchanging vocal blows with Michalis, but personally from the very first listen I was won over by Carve Your Rage, Crows Fly Back and Exhaling Fear, which together with The Serpent Lord and Man In The Mirror I think they win the rest of the album in the details.
Unquestionably a huge leap for the band, unquestionably a very strong release in a genre that is coming back strong and becoming more and more competitive. Unquestionably professional release in all aspects, cover (Remedy Art Design), production (Fotis Benardo) and presentation. Well done for all, well done to all, well done a little more to Nikos from me.
