Κοιτάξτε, ας συμφωνήσουμε εξ αρχής ότι μία από τις συμπαντικές σταθερές στην μουσικής μας είναι ότι τα all star και τύπου all star bands είναι καταδικασμένα να μην έχουν ιδιαίτερα μεγάλη διάρκεια ζωής, όπως επίσης και τίνουν να απογοητεύουν ή να μην πληρούν τις προσδοκίες. Μπορούμε να δώσουμε τα χέρια σε αυτό πριν πάμε στα δια ταύτα; Πολύ ωραία.
Το προηγούμενο παραπλήσιο όχημα των δύο βασικών συντελεστών των WHOM GODS DESTROY, αυτό των SONS OF APOLLO, δεν αποτελεί εξαίρεση των παραπάνω. Αφού λοιπόν η διάρκεια ζωής τους ήρθε σε κλείσιμο μετά από δύο album, οι κύριοι Derek Sherinian και Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal είπαν να πάνε τα πράγματα παρακάτω προσθέτοντας στην παρέα τον εκπληκτικό Dino Jelusick σε ρόλο τραγουδιστή και τους Bruno Valverde και Yas Nomura στα τύμπανα και μπάσο αντίστοιχα, εγένετο με αυτόν τον τρόπο τους WHOM GODS DESTROY. Και ναι το Insanium είναι ότι ακριβώς θα περιμένατε να είναι. Μια progressive πανδαισία, μία εκπληκτική και συνάμα over the top μίξη της μουσικής ιδιοφυΐας των δύο κεντρικών πρωταγωνιστών του project.
Το να πω ότι μουσικά το album είναι εύκολο στην ακρόαση θα ήταν σχετικά ψευδές, από την άλλη αν αποτελείς φίλο της καριέρας και γενικά της μουσικής που εκπροσωπούν οι Sherinian και Thal, τότε είναι αρκετά βατό. Συνθετικά ο δίσκος είναι αρκετά μοιρασμένος και με ευδιάκριτο τρόπο ως προς το ποιος έχει γράψει τι, μιας και δεν προσπαθούν ιδιαίτερα να το κρύψουν, αντιθέτως το κάνουν πολύ έντονο, τόσο όσο και ο μουσικός χαρακτήρας και γνωρίσματα των δύο prog μεγαθηρίων. Δεν χρειάζεται να πω κάτι για τον Dino, το παλικάρι είναι από τις καλύτερες και πιο χαρισματικές φωνές τόσο της γενιάς του όσο και των τελευταίων 10-15 χρόνων κατά την γνώμη μου. Πολύ δυνατές ερμηνείες, με μια μόνιμη τάση προς την πιο επιθετική του πλευρά, πάντα όμως σε κλασικές φόρμες ως προς τις μελωδικές γραμμές. Valverde και Nomura απλά σεμιναριακοί, παραπάνω από ικανοί και άξιοι να στέκονται δίπλα στους “μεγάλους”, κοινώς εγκεφαλικά από παντού από πάσα εμπλεκόμενο μουσικά.
Στα των συνθέσεων τώρα, όχι και τα πιο “εμπορικά” κομμάτια, σίγουρα όχι στον βαθμό που ήταν οι SONS OF APOLLO, πάρα ταύτα αυτό δεν στερεί από τις μαγικές και “χτυπητές” στιγμές ή την βατή ακρόαση και των 9 κομματιών που περιλαμβάνει το Insanium. Όλος παραδόξως, ο δίσκος ολοκληρώνει την ακρόαση του σχετικά γρήγορα και απροσδόκητα εθιστικά. Ναι φυσικά και υπάρχουν αρκετές φάσεις όπου τόσο ο Sherinian όσο και ο Bumblefoot εκτροχιάζονται και οργιάζουν αλλά στο τέλος της ημέρας, prog παίζεις και ξέρεις και τι πας να ακούσεις. Αν περιμένεις ευθείες και τετράγωνα μέτρα τότε κάπου μπερδεύτηκες. Προσωπικά, ότι καλύτερο έχω ακούσει σε αυτή την κατηγορία, ότι πιο πλούσιο και γεμάτο, ότι πιο φλύαρο και ταυτόχρονα με λόγο ύπαρξης. Οπότε ως προς τις προσδοκίες που ανέφερα στην αρχή, τα πάει περίφημα και είναι ακριβώς ότι περίμενα, τώρα ως προς την διάρκεια ζωής, θα δείξει. Πιθανόν και στην λίστα μου από τώρα για την χρονιά που διανύουμε. Ναι από παντού.

Look, let’s agree from the start that one of the universal constants in our music is that all star and all star type bands are doomed to not have a particularly long run, as well as they tend to disappoint or fail to meet expectations. Can we shake hands on this before we get to the point? Great.
The previous similar music vehicle of the two main contributors to WHOM GODS DESTROY, that of SONS OF APOLLO, is no exception to the above. So after their lifespan came to a close after just two albums, gentlemen Derek Sherinian and Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal decided to take things further by adding to the company the amazing Dino Jelusick on vocals and Bruno Valverde and Yas Nomura on drums and bass respectively, thus becoming WHOM GODS DESTROY. And yes, Insanium is exactly what you would expect it to be. A progressive feast, an amazing yet over the top mix of the musical genius of the two main protagonists of the project.
To say that musically the album is easy to listen to, would be relatively false, on the other hand if you are a fan of the career and generally of the music that Sherinian and Thal represent, then it is quite passable. Compositionally the album is quite divided and distinct as to who wrote what, as they don’t really try to hide it, instead they make it very pronounced, as much as the musical character and traits of the two prog beasts. I don’t need to say anything about Dino, the lad is one of the best and most charismatic voices of both his generation and the last 10-15 years in my opinion. Very strong performances, with a constant tendency towards his more aggressive side, but always in classic forms as far as melodic lines are concerned. Valverde and Nomura are simply seminal, more than capable and worthy to stand next to the “greats”, simply put, brainstorm from all over the place from all musically involved.
As for the compositions themselves, not the most “easy listening” tracks, certainly not to the extent that SONS OF APOLLO were, however this does not deprive the magical and “hit” moments or the heavy listening of all 9 tracks that comprise Insanium. All surprisingly, the album completes its listening relatively quickly and unexpectedly addictive. Yes of course there are several phases where both Sherinian and Bumblefoot derail and “show off” but at the end of the day, prog metal is what you play and you know what you’re going to listen to, to begin with. If you’re expecting straight lines and square meters then you’re confused somewhere. Personally, the best I’ve heard in this category, the richest and fullest, the most chatty yet with a reason for being. So as far as the expectations I mentioned at the beginning, it’s doing great and is exactly what I expected, now as far as longevity, we’ll see. Probably on my list as of now for the year. Yes, from all areas and aspects.
