Όντας βετεράνος οπαδός των AMON AMARTH, θεωρώ τον εαυτό μου έναν από τους πιο επιλεκτικούς ακροατές της μπάντας, οπότε κάθε νέα κυκλοφορία είναι πολύ σοβαρή υπόθεση για μένα. Ακούγοντας το The Great Heathen Army έμεινα μάλλον έκπληκτη όταν διαπίστωσα ότι οι αγαπημένοι μου Βίκινγκ πήραν μια heavy metal παρά μια death metal διαδρομή. Τα φωνητικά εξακολουθούν να είναι brutal αλλά η δομή των τραγουδιών είναι πιασάρικη, απλή και πιο βασική.
Δεδομένου ότι ο Andy Sneap ήταν επίσης ο παραγωγός πίσω από το Deceiver of the Gods του 2013 και το Jomsviking του 2016, η πιο heavy προσέγγιση είναι μάλλον αυτό που ήθελε να εξερευνήσει η μπάντα και όχι ο παραγωγός. Και παρόλο που ο Johan Hegg έχει σχολιάσει για το άλμπουμ ότι “Συνολικά είναι ένα από τα πιο βαριά άλμπουμ που έχουμε κάνει“. Εγώ θα έλεγα ότι είναι ένα από τα πιο ελαφριά τους. Σίγουρα μπορούμε να βρούμε τους live ύμνους των Βίκινγκς που έχουμε συνηθίσει όπως το ομώνυμο κομμάτι, τα Heidrun, Find A Way Or Make One και Dawn Of The Norsemen και κάποια διαφορετικά τραγούδια όπως το Skagul Rides With Me και το The Serpent‘s Tail που ακούγεται σαν την εκδοχή των AMON AMARTH στο Fear Of The Dark των IRON MAIDEN. Το ντουέτο με τον θρυλικό Biff Byford των SAXON είναι ένα μάλλον αναπάντεχο upbeat κομμάτι που προορίζεται να μείνει στη μνήμη από το πρώτο άκουσμα. Οι Amon Amarth είναι μια μπάντα που πολλοί οπαδοί του heavy metal αγαπούν λόγω της μουσικής τους και από την επιχειρηματική πλευρά της μουσικής είναι σοφό να ανοιχτούν περισσότερο προς αυτό το κοινό. Μουσικά η νέα τους κυκλοφορία είναι ένα διασκεδαστικό άλμπουμ για να το ακούσεις αλλά δεν μπορώ να το βάλω σε δίπλα δίπλα με άλμπουμ του παλιού τους καταλόγου όπως το Versus The World ή το With Odin On Our Side.
Συνολικά, το The Great Heathen Army είναι ο τρόπος των AMON AMARTH να ανοιχτούν σε ένα ευρύτερο κοινό. Δεν θα έλεγα ότι χρειάζεται να ανοιχτούν, καθώς είναι ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα συγκροτήματα της metal σκηνής που κυκλοφορούν, με headliners στα μεγαλύτερα φεστιβάλ του κόσμου και κατά την προσωπική μου άποψη θα προτιμούσα να τους δω να εξερευνούν περισσότερο την πλευρά που τους οδήγησε στη δημιουργία τραγουδιών όπως το Into The Dark από την προηγούμενη κυκλοφορία τους Berserker. Αυτό όμως δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν πρόκειται να εκτοξεύσω δυνατά τη νέα κυκλοφορία.

Being a veteran AMON AMARTH fan, I consider myself to be one of the pickiest of listeners of the band so every new release is a very serious matter for me. Listening to The Great Heathen Army I was rather surprised to find out that my favorite Norsemen went on a heavy metal than a death metal route. The vocals are still brutal yet the structure of the songs is catchy, simple and more basic.
Since Andy Sneap had also been the producer behind 2013’s Deceiver of the Gods and 2016’s Jomsviking, the heavier approach is probably what the band wanted to explore and not the producer’s approach. And even though Johan Hegg has commented on the album that “Overall it’s one of the heavier albums we’ve made.” I would say it’s one of their lightest. We definitely can find the live Viking anthems we are accustomed to such as the title track, Heidrun, Find A Way Or Make One and Dawn Of The Norsemen and some diverse songs such as Skagul Rides With Me and The Serpent’s Tail which sounds like AMON AMARTH’s version of IRON MAIDEN’s Fear Of The Dark. The duet with the legendary Biff Byford of SAXON is a rather surprising upbeat track meant to be remembered by the first listen. AMON AMARTH are a band many heavy metal fans love because of their heavy music on the business side of music it’s wise to open up more towards this audience. Musically it is a fun album to listen to but I can’t put it head-to-head to albums in their back catalogue such as Versus The World or With Odin On Our Side.
All in all, The Great Heathen Army is AMON AMARTH’s way of opening up to a wider audience. I wouldn’t say they need to open up as they are one of the metal scene’s biggest bands around, headlining the world’s biggest festivals and in my personal opinion I would rather see them explore more the side that led them into creating songs such as Into The Dark from their previous release Berserker. But this doesn’t mean I am not going to be blasting the new release loud.
