Την Παρασκευή 23 Σεπτεμβρίου και σε μία από τις μικρότερες μουσικές σκηνές που έχω συναντήσει, είχα τη χαρά να παρακολουθήσω τη συναυλία των πολύ αγαπημένων μου Evergrey. Το Newcastle ήταν μία από τις στάσεις του European Tour 2022 των Σουηδών Evergrey, κατά τη διάρκεια του οποίου πλαισιώνονται από τους Virtual Symmetry και τους Fractal Universe.
Τη συναυλία άνοιξαν οι Ελβετό-Ιταλοί Virtual Symmetry, τους οποίους οφείλω να ομολογήσω πως δεν είχα ξανακούσει. Έχουν στην κατοχή τους τρία full studio albums με το πιο πρόσφατο, και ομώνυμο Virtual Symmetry, να έχει κυκλοφορήσει στις 16 Σεπτεμβρίου 2022. Οι Virtual Symmetry ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή γεμάτοι ενέργεια και χαμόγελο. Progressive ήχοι σε μονοπάτια Dream Theater, όμορφες μελωδίες, φοβερή δυναμική και παθιασμένες εκτελέσεις.
Πήρα κι ένα vibe Avantasia κάποια στιγμή, με πιο epic/symphonic πινελιές, και σίγουρα ένα από τα πρώτα πράγματα που έκανα την επόμενη του live ήταν να τους ψάξω για να ακούσω παραπάνω. Άρα νομίζω αποστολή εξετελέσθη για τους Virtual Symmetry, αφού και οι 5 τους απέδωσαν μουσικά με πολύ gusto, στέλνοντάς μας σπίτι να τους μελετήσουμε παραπάνω. Θα τους ξαναέβλεπα live με μεγάλη ευχαρίστηση at any given time!
Οι επόμενοι επάνω στη σκηνή θα είναι οι Γάλλοι Fractal Universe, των οποίων οι μουσικές μου είναι πιο οικείες, μιας και τους ανακάλυψα την περίοδο των lockdown. Έχουν κυκλοφορήσει τέσσερα full studio albums, το πιο πρόσφατο εκ των οποίων το The Impassable Horizon του 2021. Το κλίμα σίγουρα λίγο πιο βαρύ και σκοτεινό, με καπνούς να περιβάλλουν τους Fractal Universe, και progressive/τεχνικούς death metal ήχους. Διπλές κιθάρες, growling φωνητικά και καλογραμμένες μελωδίες, με τους Fractal Universe να αποδίδουν live αυτό που ακούς και ηχογραφημένα. Το σαξόφωνο του Vince Wilquin φυσικά κλέβει την παράσταση, με τον ίδιο να εναλλάσσει μεταξύ φωνής, κιθάρας και σαξοφώνου πολύ συχνά κατά τη διάρκεια του live. Οι Fractal Universe είναι σίγουρα γνώστες του είδους τους, αλλά και πολύ καλοί στο να το αποδίδουν live, ευχαριστώντας εμάς που ξέραμε ήδη τις μουσικές τους αλλά και κερδίζοντας εκείνους που τους άκουγαν για πρώτη φορά.
Και ήρθε η ώρα τον αγαπημένων Σουηδών με το Save Us να είναι το πρώτο τραγούδι των Evergrey, από την πιο πρόσφατη δισκογραφική τους δουλειά, A Headless Portrait, μέσα από την οποία επίσης απολαύσαμε τα Midwinter Calls, Call Out The Dark και Blindfolded. Την τιμητική του είχε φυσικά και το Escape of The Phoenix του 2021, με τα υπέροχα Where August Mourns, In the Absence of Sun και Eternal Nocturnal. Ενδιάμεσα στα δύο πιο πρόσφατα τους albums οι Evergrey αναμειγνύοντας τραγούδια από το The Atlantic του 2019, το Storm Within του 2016, το Inner Circle του 2004 αλλά και του Recreation Day του 2003 μας χάρισαν ένα πολύ απολαυστικό setlist, αναδεικνύοντας όλα αυτά για τα οποία τους αγαπάμε.
Είναι αλήθεια πως η ζέστη μέσα στο venue ήταν απερίγραπτη και ο Tom Englund τουλάχιστον σίγουρα το ένιωσε και δεν το άφησε ασχολίαστο, παρόλα αυτά η απόδοση των Evergrey ήταν γοητευτική το λιγότερο. Η μεταξύ τους αγάπη και οικειότητα ολοφάνερη, με τον Tom Englund να ξέρει πώς να φτιάχνει ένα σόου, ακόμα και κάτω από αντίξοες συνθήκες. Αστειεύεται με το κοινό, δείχνει στοργή αλλά και πειράζει στους συμπαίκτες του και φυσικά αυτή η φωνή…αχ αυτή η φωνή! Όλα τα μέλη της μπάντας ξέρουν πως να λάμπουν τη στιγμή που πρέπει και όλοι μαζί είναι πάντα πρόθυμοι να δώσουν ό,τι έχουν για να δημιουργήσουν μια αξέχαστη βραδιά.
Tom, Jonas, Rikard, Johan και Henrik ευχαριστούμε για μια βραδιά γεμάτη όμορφες μελωδίες, εθιστικά riffs, μουσική ποίηση, τεχνική, μαεστρία και αυθεντικότητα. Μέχρι να ξανασυναντηθούμε…(στην Ελλάδα, ελπίζω!)

On Friday, 23rd September and in one of the smallest music scenes I have ever encountered, I had the pleasure of attending the concert of my very favourite Evergrey. Newcastle upon Tyne was one of the stops on the Swedish band Evergrey’s European Tour 2022, during which they are accompanied by Virtual Symmetry and Fractal Universe.
The show kicked by Swiss-Italian Virtual Symmetry, who I must admit I wasn’t familiar with. They have three full studio albums under their belt, with the most recent, and self-titled Virtual Symmetry, being released on September 16th, 2022. Virtual Symmetry took the stage full of energy and smiles. Progressive sounds on Dream Theater pathways, beautiful melodies, great dynamics and passionate performances. I even got an Avantasia vibe at one point, due to more epic/symphonic touches, and definitely one of the first things I did the day after the show was to seek them out, to listen to more. So, I think mission was accomplished for Virtual Symmetry, as all five of them performed beautifully and with great gusto, sending us home to study them further. I would see them live again with great pleasure at any given time!
Next up on stage will be the French Fractal Universe, whose music I’m more familiar with, as I discovered them during the lockdown period. They have released four full studio albums, the most recent of which is 2021’s The Impassable Horizon. The atmosphere is definitely a bit heavier and darker, with smoke surrounding Fractal Universe, and progressive/technical death metal sounds. Double guitars, growling vocals and well-written melodies, with Fractal Universe delivering live what you hear on record. Vince Wilquin’s saxophone of course steals the show, with him switching between voice, guitar and saxophone very often during the live. Fractal Universe know their genre very well and they are also very good at delivering it live, pleasing those of us who already knew their music and winning over those who were listening to them for the first time!
And it was time for the beloved Swedes, with Save Us being the first song from Evergrey’s most recent album, A Headless Portrait, from which we also enjoyed Midwinter Calls, Call Out The Dark and Blindfolded. Of course, Escape of The Phoenix’s 2021 was also given its due, with the wonderful Where August Mourns, In the Absence of Sun and Eternal Nocturnal. In between their two most recent albums Evergrey mixed songs from 2019’s The Atlantic, 2016’s Storm Within, 2004’s Inner Circle and 2003’s Recreation Day treating us to a very enjoyable setlist, highlighting every reason we love them for.
It’s true that the heat inside the venue was indescribable and Tom Englund at least certainly felt it and didn’t let it slide, however Evergrey’s performance was spellbinding to say the least. The love and familiarity between them was very evident, with Tom Englund knowing how to put on a show, even under adverse conditions. He jokes, shows affection and teases his teammates and of course that voice…oh that voice! All of the band members knew how to shine at the right time and together they are always willing to give it their all to create an unforgettable night.
Tom, Jonas, Rikard, Johan and Henrik thank you for an evening full of beautiful melodies, addictive riffs, musical poetry, technique, mastery and authenticity. Until we meet again…(in Greece hopefully!)
