Ακόμα μια προσθήκη στην Ελληνική ακραία μουσική σκηνή, ακόμα μια black/death metal μπάντα από τον Βόλο, που όπως φαίνεται τα πάει περίφημα σε αυτόν τον ήχο. Ντεμπούτο για τους EXILIUM NOCTIS οι οποίοι μας παρουσιάζουν το Fragments Of Apocalypse. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι γενικότερα αυτή η σκηνή έχει πολύ δυνατούς και ποιοτικούς εκφραστές τα τελευταία χρόνια, οπότε γεννιέται αυτόματα το ερώτημα ως προς το τι μπορούν να προσφέρει η κάθε νέα μπάντα σε έναν ήχο ήδη πλούσιο και γεμάτο.
Εκ πρώτης, οι EXILIUM NOCTIS δείχνουν ή ακούγονται για να το θέσουμε πιο σωστά αρκετά “κοινοί”. Μέσα στα 7 κομμάτια που περιλαμβάνει το Fragments Of Apocalypse τηρούνται, ορισμένες φορές με απόλυτη ευλάβεια όλα τα κλισέ του χώρου, τόσο μουσικά όσο και θεματολογικά. Το δεύτερο δε, προσωπικά πλέον μου φαίνεται πιο γραφικό και από αυτούς που “κράζουμε”. Στο μουσικό κομμάτι των κλισέ, από το τις αναμενόμενες ρυθμικές αλλαγές, μέχρι riff που έχεις ξανά ακούσει σίγουρα κάπου, κάτι που δεν έχει να κάνει με αυτό καθαυτό το riff όσο με το vibe και την συλλογική του αισθητική. Κάτι φυσικά που ξεχωρίζει από την αρχή είναι η ιδιαίτερα έντονη επιρροή της δικής μας σκηνής στο κομμάτι των φωνητικών. Για να μην παρερμηνευθώ, στην νοοτροπία και τον τρόπο γραφής αναφέρομαι, όχι στο εκτελεστικό μέρος, σε αυτό τα πράγματα είναι πολύ ικανοποιητικά.
Πέρα λοιπόν από τα παραπάνω, με μία πιο προσεκτική ακρόαση ανακαλύπτεις πράγματα στον ήχο των EXILIUM NOCTIS τα οποία είναι ακόμα ίσως άγουρα ή αβέβαια, η ανάπτυξη τον οποίων όμως μελλοντικά μπορεί να κάνει την απόλυτη διαφορά. Σαφώς η ενσωμάτωση κλασικής μουσικής και παιδείας δεν αποτελεί κάτι νέο, αλλά πολλά από αυτά τα περάσματα κατά την διάρκεια του δίσκου φέρουν μια πολύ ωραία και ευχάριστη αύρα, χωρίς να κατατάσουν το σύνολο στο συμφωνικό καλάθι του death/black. Κάτι μου λέει πως η ίδια η μπάντα στοχεύει πιο πολύ στην ακραία πλευρά της μουσικής της. Για παράδειγμα δεν μπορώ να μην σταθώ στην ανατολίτικη πινελιά και ενορχήστρωση του Night Witches, ούτε φυσικά να μην αναφέρω το πόσο πολύ ποιοτικά είναι τα μελωδικά περάσματα της μπάντας όταν αυτή αποφασίζει να “ανοίξει” τις συνθέσεις της με πιο SATYRICON και των πρώτων χρόνων DIMMU BORGIR επιρροές. Το κιθαριστικό κομμάτι σαν σύνολο είναι αρκετά ωραίο, καλοπαιγμένα, πλούσια riff, με στροφές και εναλλαγές.
Προσοχή επίσης στο θέμα τις παραγωγής, καθώς ενώ σε γενικά πλαίσια υπάρχει ομοιογένια, όταν η προσοχή και η έμφαση στρέφεται στο τσέλο για παράδειγμα και στα πιο “καθαρά” και κλασικά στοιχεία, το “θάψιμο” των υπολοίπων οργάνων (σε θέμα έντασης) γίνεται κάτι παραπάνω από αντιληπτό. Σε γενικές γραμμές, το ντεμπούτο των EXILIUM NOCTIS είναι αρκετά καλό για αυτό που εκπροσωπεί. Έχει πολλά στοιχεία που εν καιρό, σωστή δουλειά και πάνω από όλα με ξεκάθαρο στόχο και ήχο κατά νου, μπορούν να κάνουν την διαφορά.

Another addition to the Greek extreme music scene, another black/death metal band from Volos, that seems to be doing great in this genre. Debut for EXILIUM NOCTIS who present us Fragments Of Apocalypse. The truth is that in general this scene has had very strong exponents both in sound and quality in the last years, so the question automatically arises as to what each new band can and has to offer to a sound already rich and full.
At first, EXILIUM NOCTIS seem or sound, to put it more correctly, quite “common”. Within the 7 tracks that Fragments Of Apocalypse includes, all the clichés of the genre are observed, sometimes with absolute reverence, both musically and lyrically/thematically. With the second one, personally speaking, nowadays it seems to me more graphic and ridiculous than the ones they are trying to cauterize. On the musical side of the clichés, from the expected rhythmic changes, to riffs you’ve definitely heard somewhere before, which has nothing to do with the riff itself as much as the vibe and its collective aesthetic. Something of course that stands out from the start is the particularly strong influence of the Greek scene on the vocal part. Not to be misunderstood, I’m referring to the mentality and the way of writing, not to the performance part, in this respect things are very satisfying.
So apart from the above, with a closer listen you discover things in the sound of EXILIUM NOCTIS that are still perhaps immature or uncertain, but the development of which in the future may be a game changer. Clearly the incorporation of classical music and education in extreme metal is nothing new, but many of these passages throughout the album carry a very nice and pleasant aura, without classifying the whole thing in the symphonic death/black basket. Something tells me that the band themselves are aiming more towards the extreme side of their music. For example, I can’t help but reference the oriental touch and instrumentation of Night Witches, nor of course not to mention how much quality the band’s melodic passages are when they decide to “open” their compositions with more SATYRICON and early DIMMU BORGIR influences. The guitar part as a whole is quite nice, nicely played, rich riffs, with twists and turns.
Attention should also be paid to the issue of production, as while in general there is homogeneity, when the attention and emphasis is directed to the cello for example and the more “clean” and classical elements, the “sonic burial” of the other instruments (in terms of volume) becomes more than noticeable. In general, EXILIUM NOCTIS‘ debut album is quite good for what it represents. It has many elements that in time, with proper work and above all with a clear goal and sound in mind, can make a difference.
