IMMORTAL – WAR AGAINST ALL (NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS)

Δισκογραφική επιστροφή για τους IMMORTAL του Demonaz, και λέω του Demonaz καθότι μόνο αυτός έχει απομείνει από το αρχικό, και μη, line up της μπάντας.  Στην πρώτη του απόπειρα να φορτωθεί εξ ολοκλήρου τους IMMORTAL, αναφέρομαι βεβαίως στο Northern Chaos Gods, τα πήγε εξαιρετικά κατά την ταπεινή μου γνώμη. Το νέο album, War Against All είχε μεγάλες προσδοκίες να καλύψει, το πόσο τις πέτυχε, εξαρτάται από ποιον ρωτάς.

Ομολογώ πως το πρώτο single για το ομώνυμο κομμάτι ήταν μια πολύ σωστή επιλογή καθώς προσωπικά με κέρδισε με το πρώτο άκουσμα. Όπως ανέφερα, είχε να ανταγωνιστεί μία ιδιαίτερα καλή κυκλοφορία αλλά και 5 ολόκληρα χρόνια για να “ψηθεί”. Το πρώτο πράγμα που γίνεται αντιληπτό στην ακρόαση του νέου δίσκου των IMMORTAL είναι πως του λείπει η τραχύτητα που διακατέχει το Northern Chaos Gods. Στο σύνολο του είναι πιο απλωμένος και εύπεπτος δίσκος, με περισσότερες mid tempo στιγμές, πάντοτε όμως με τα χαρακτηριστηκά riff και περάσματα των IMMORTAL.

Κάτι που δίνει επίσης το βροντερό παρόν είναι και η επική διάθεση που χαρακτήριζε και το All Shall Fall, οι ομοιότητες του οποίου με το War Against All είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο να μην γίνουν αντιληπτές. Μιλάμε πάντοτε όμως για ομοιότητες ως προς το σκεπτικό και στήσιμο, όχι προς την συνολική και συλλογική ποιότητα, στην οποία το νεότερο παιδί του Demonaz υστερεί συγκριτικά. Ίσως η κάποια αίσθηση επαναληψιμότητας riff-ολογικά να ευθύνεται για αυτό, πιθανόν να είναι και το βασικό αδύνατο σημείο της κυκλοφορίας. Νομίζω πως η λέξη εύπεπτο που χρησιμοποιήθηκε λίγες γραμμές πίσω είναι και η σωστότερη προκειμένου να περιγράψεις απλά και επί του σημείου το War Against All.

Επ Ουδενί δεν μιλάμε για κακή κυκλοφορία, δεν υπάρχει κατά την άποψη μου αυτή η λέξη μέσα στην δισκογραφία και πορεία των IMMORTAL. Αντιθέτως, συνθέσεις όπως τα War Against All, Return To Cold (εξαιρετικό κομμάτι), Immortal και το Blashyrkh My Throne που κλείνει και το album θεωρώ πως αποτελούν αξίες και περήφανες προσθήκες σε οποιοδήποτε playlist της δισκογραφίας των IMMORTAL. Τίμια κυκλοφορία, απλά έχει την “ατυχία” να έρθει μετά το Northern Chaos Gods.

The return for Demonaz‘s IMMORTAL, and I say Demonaz because he’s the only one left from the original, and the overall, line up of the band.  In his first attempt to take on IMMORTAL entirely, I’m referring of course to Northern Chaos Gods, he did an excellent job in my humble opinion. The new album, War Against All had high expectations to live up to, how much he achieved them depends on who you ask.

I must admit that the first single for the title track was a very good choice as it personally won me over on first listen. As I mentioned, it had a particularly good predecessor to compete with but also 5 whole years to “cook” it. The first thing that can be noticed when listening to the new IMMORTAL album is that it lacks the harshness/sharpness that Northern Chaos Gods possesses. On the whole it is a more spread out and easy listening/digestible album, with more mid tempo moments, but always with the characteristic riffs and passages of IMMORTAL.

Something that also gives a thunderous presence is the epic mood that characterized All Shall Fall, whose similarities with War Against All are almost impossible not to notice. But we are always talking about similarities in terms of mindset and approach, not in terms of overall and collective quality, in which Demonaz‘s newest child is comparatively lacking. Perhaps a certain sense of riff-wise repetitiveness is responsible for this, possibly the main weak point of the release. I think the phrase easy listening/digestible used a few lines back is the most appropriate word to describe War Against All simply and to the point.

By no means we are not talking about a bad release, in my opinion this word does not exist in IMMORTAL‘s discography and career. On the contrary, compositions like War Against All, Return To Cold (excellent track), Immortal and Blashyrkh My Throne which closes the album, I think that they are valuable additions to any playlist of IMMORTAL‘s discography. An honest release, it just has the “misfortune” to come after Northern Chaos Gods.
